University at Albany SUNY Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
The University at Albany SUNY admission requirements for Indian graduates centre on a completed bachelor’s degree, English proficiency, and financial documentation for the I-20.
Postgraduate Requirements
- Academic: Three or four year bachelor’s degree with CGPA 3.0/4.0 (about 65%) recommended; competitive programmes prefer 70% or higher
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 or 4.0 (new 2026 scoring system) / IELTS 6.5 / PTE Academic 53 / Duolingo 110
- Credential verification: Official transcripts in original language with certified English translations; WES or SpanTran evaluation for select programmes
- Financial affidavit: Bank statement covering full first-year cost of attendance, plus USD 4,000 per dependent
Undergraduate Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 board results from CBSE, ICSE or state board; competitive majors expect 75% to 85% (recommended)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 / IELTS 6.5 / Duolingo 110; SAT and ACT are optional for admission
Key insight: The English test can be waived if you complete at least four full-time semesters at a US college with a B average within four years of applying. Applicants with English-medium undergraduate degrees can request a formal waiver review at the department level.
University at Albany SUNY Acceptance Rate 2027
The University at Albany SUNY acceptance rate sits near 69% (estimated) at the undergraduate level based on recent published admissions data. That puts UAlbany in the somewhat-selective tier among US public research universities, more welcoming than the SUNY flagships but not open-access.
Graduate acceptance rates vary sharply by department. The Massry School of Business reports an MBA acceptance rate near 57% (estimated), while STEM-designated masters in Computer Science and Data Science are tighter due to funding-linked seat caps.
Reality check: A 69% rate does not mean automatic admission for Indian applicants. Strong applicants show CGPA above 3.2/4.0, clear statement of purpose, and English test scores comfortably above the minimums. Below-threshold profiles are declined despite the high headline number.
UAlbany Fees and Cost of Living for Indian Students 2027

University at Albany SUNY Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
University at Albany SUNY placements for Indian graduates cluster in the semiconductor corridor around Albany NanoTech, financial services in New York City, and state-government analytics roles in the state capital itself.
- Employment window: STEM-designated masters carry 36 months of OPT; non-STEM masters and MBA carry 12 months
- Median MS starting salary: USD 65,000 to USD 85,000 (market range for STEM MS graduates at public US universities, INR 62.2 to 81.4 lakh)
- Median post-MBA salary: USD 75,000 to USD 90,000 (market range for regional AACSB MBA cohorts, INR 71.8 to 86.2 lakh)
- Recruiting sectors: Semiconductor manufacturing (GlobalFoundries anchors the Capital Region), fintech, Big 4 consulting, state government analytics, health-tech and biotech at Regeneron
- Careers office: Central Career and Professional Development Center runs employer treks to NYC and Boston plus dedicated international-student advising for OPT filings
Insider note: Indian MS Computer Science graduates who target the Capital Region get faster interviews than those competing in Boston or Manhattan, because local semiconductor and state-government employers rank UAlbany as a primary feeder school.
University at Albany SUNY vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants typically shortlist UAlbany alongside larger SUNY campuses and mid-tier private New York universities offering STEM-designated masters at comparable price points.
| University | QS World 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (International) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| University at Albany SUNY | #951-1000 | USD 31,811 / INR 30.5 lakh | Public Administration #34 globally per ARWU 2025 GRAS |
| Stony Brook University SUNY | #351-400 | USD 28,000/ INR 26.8 lakh | STEM and biomedical research anchor, R1 |
| University at Buffalo SUNY | #401-450 | USD 28,000 / INR 26.8 lakh | Largest SUNY, broad engineering catalogue |
| Syracuse University | #451-500 | USD 45,000 / INR 43.1 lakh | Private R1 with iSchool and Newhouse strengths |
[Source: QS World Rankings 2027 and university tuition pages]
UAlbany stands out on two dimensions inside this peer set. It matches SUNY peers on tuition and living costs while carrying a stronger subject profile in Public Administration and Atmospheric Sciences, and it undercuts private New York peers like Syracuse by more than USD 13,000 (INR 12.4 lakh) per year.
The University at Albany SUNY suits Indian applicants who want a STEM-designated masters or MPA at a public US price point of USD 46,000 (INR 44.0 lakh) per year all-in, with a realistic median starting salary of USD 75,000 (INR 71.8 lakh). The Capital Region semiconductor corridor and 36-month OPT make it a genuine early-career launchpad on the F-1 route.
It is not the right pick for applicants set on a QS top-500 badge or a location inside a major metro like New York City or Boston. Those buyers should instead look at Stony Brook University SUNY or private R1 options with stronger world-rank halo effects.
FAQs
Ques. What is the application fee at University at Albany SUNY and can it be waived?
Ans. Undergraduate applications carry a USD 50 (INR 4,788) fee and graduate applications USD 75 (INR 7,182). Fee waivers are available for applicants who used SUNY-approved recruiters, attended UAlbany campus visits, or applied through EducationUSA advising centres in India. Some departments also grant waivers for exceptional academic profiles or fellowship nominees, so ask the programme coordinator directly before you submit.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UAlbany?
Ans. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during semesters and 40 hours per week during university breaks. On-campus roles include research assistantships, library and dining hall jobs, and IT desks. Off-campus employment requires prior authorisation through Curricular Practical Training after two semesters, or through Optional Practical Training after graduation.
Ques. Does UAlbany require GRE or GMAT for MS and MBA admission?
Ans. Most master’s programmes have made GRE optional, and the Massry MBA is GMAT and GRE optional through the 2027 intake. Applicants with lower CGPA still submit scores to strengthen weak academic records. PhD applicants and funded assistantship candidates in STEM departments benefit from a competitive GRE Quantitative score above 160, even where officially optional.
Ques. What are the English test waiver options at University at Albany SUNY?
Ans. The English test requirement can be waived if you completed at least four full-time semesters at a US college with a B average within four years of applying. Indian applicants with English-medium undergraduate degrees may also request a department-level waiver review, though this is discretionary and rarely granted for competitive STEM programmes.
Ques. Which Indian loan providers finance studies at UAlbany?
Ans. UAlbany is on the approved lists of HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred and ICICI Bank for secured education loans. Non-collateral options include Prodigy Finance and MPower Financing, which serve international students without an Indian co-signer. Public sector banks like SBI Global Ed-Vantage offer the lowest interest rates but require collateral for amounts above INR 20 lakh.
Ques. Does University at Albany SUNY offer conditional admission for language pathways?
Ans. Yes. The Intensive English Language Program (IELI) offers conditional admission for applicants whose academic record meets department requirements but whose TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo scores fall short. Students complete IELI levels before joining the degree programme. Duration ranges from one to three semesters based on placement testing at arrival, and I-20 documents are issued for both stages together.
Ques. What financial documents do dependents on F-2 visa need?
Ans. Each F-2 dependent adds USD 4,000 (INR 3.83 lakh) per year to the financial affidavit requirement. Submit the spouse or child’s passport bio-page, marriage or birth certificate, and updated bank statements covering the full amount. Dependents on F-2 cannot work in the US but may study part-time. Children under 21 can attend K-12 public schools free of charge in the Albany city school district.
Ques. How does UAlbany handle credential verification for Indian transcripts?
Ans. Most master’s departments accept original transcripts and mark sheets sent directly by the Indian university in sealed envelopes, along with a certified English translation. Selected competitive programmes require course-by-course WES evaluation, which takes six to eight weeks and costs about USD 220 (INR 21,067). Start the WES process at least three months before the application deadline to avoid missing the review window.

- Planned on finding off-campus accommodation; searched through Telegram and WhatsApp SUNY Albany student groups, then asked among seniors.
- This ranges from anywhere between 400 to 800 bucks a month, depending on shared utilities: water, electricity, heat were inclusive. My accommodation was approximately 1.5 miles off-campus, travel taking anything up to 10 to 15 minutes using a bus.
- The biggest challenge, being an international student, was understanding lease agreements, but early planning and seniors' help got me a good place.
- Most Indian students stay around Western Avenue or Washington Avenue; these are quite popular for affordability and convenience
Fees
- The total fee for a graduate student is 35 lakhs in rupees and 33 thousand in dollars.

- The first reason was the course that explores both Digital Forensics and Cyber Security. And the university will allow us to complete masters degree in a year If I'm willing to. And the professors here in Cyber Security has greater experience and knowledge in the topics I'm interested in. Few topics like Incident Response, Penetration Testing, Risk Analysis, Computer Forensics etc.
- This university is known for its excellence in research facilities. The location was very well suited to find great opportunities. Major cities like New York city, Boston,
- Buffalo are within 3 hours distance so finding a good company to get an internship and job was much easier. The university also has great infrastructure and facilities that anything I wanted to learn or create, the required help is already present in terms of faculty, staff and labs.
Overview
I would say that this university is good in terms of supporting students in achieving their goals and dreams. The university's campus features modern facilities, research centers, and a diverse student body. It is committed to providing students with a well-rounded education, fostering critical thinking, and preparing them for successful careers and contributions to society. The University at Albany is recognized for its research initiatives and contributions to various academic fields.
Campus Life
Campus life and infrastructure are really good. Being an international student, I always had something going on in campus that I wanted to stay there for most of the time. Not only events, the research facilities, labs and people around are very friendly. There are few times the facilities were out of order such as free printouts for graduate students then we have to pay for the printouts. Apart from that I haven't found anything concerning. We will be having free food somewhere or the other places in the campus. For spring, the sport events are limited but I used to involve in other activities which used to substitute them.

Dislikes
- Sometimes, there is lack of planning in terms of classes and advisor guidance. I chose a class for this semester about 2-3 months ago and had to switch classes in the 1st week of the semester due to redundancy in subject selection.
Overview
Getting placements is based on how much work you are willing to put into landing a job. The college can help you via career fairs and opportunities to get the employer to the college so that you can have a chance to network, but at the end of the day, it is completely dependent on you whether you land a job or not.
Campus Life
Campus life is eminent with lots of clubs and activities. I don't really have time to attend with my classes and part time work. There are infrastructure events and extracurricular activities about which every student is emailed weekly.

Overview
My overall experience in my university is very good and lovely. My experience in the university is just so lovely and educating that I don't even want to leave university. My friends in the university have always been good and kind to me.
Campus Life
The campus life has been good and superb, all activities go smoothly and ok.
Overview
The reputation was good, and the cost of living was also cheap. I also opted for this college because they offered financial aid and grants. That was what swayed me to choose here the most. I'm from California so I didn't want to move all the way to New York but education was my priority.
Fees
I use financial aid to pay for all fees and other charges. So I'm not sure exactly how it's structured.
