University of Massachusetts, Boston Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
UMass Boston sets a graduate GPA floor of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (roughly 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 on the Indian scale) and program-specific English test minimums for Indian applicants.
University of Massachusetts, Boston PG Requirements
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended equivalent of GPA 2.75/4.0); most competitive Indian applicants sit above 65%
- English proficiency (general): IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE 53 or Duolingo 105
- English proficiency (Management, Biology, MA Applied Linguistics): IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, PTE 61 or Duolingo 110
- Documents: Transcripts, statement of purpose, two academic recommendations and passport copy; GMAT/GRE not required for the Opto MBA
University of Massachusetts, Boston UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 (CBSE, ICSE or State Board) with 70% to 85% (recommended)
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE 53, Duolingo 105 or SAT ERWS 480
- Documents: Class 10 and 12 mark sheets, essay, one recommendation and financial documents; SAT/ACT optional for international applicants
Key insight: UMass Boston waives the English test requirement if the applicant completed two full academic years of coursework in the US or another designated English-speaking country. Indian applicants with a foreign exchange semester rarely qualify, so IELTS or TOEFL scores remain essential for most.
University of Massachusetts, Boston Acceptance Rate 2027
UMass Boston does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place admission selectivity in the 80% to 85% (estimated) range for undergraduate applicants, positioning it as one of the more accessible public research universities in Massachusetts for Indian applicants.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 80% to 85% (estimated) | Third-party derived; university does not publish |
| 2025 | 80% to 85% (estimated) | Third-party derived; university does not publish |
Graduate admission is program-driven, with selectivity varying widely between the MS Computer Science, MBA and MA Applied Linguistics tracks. Indian applicants meeting the 55% bachelor’s and English test minimums are the strongest candidates for admission.
Reality check: An 80% acceptance rate does not mean automatic admission. Indian applicants still need clear WES-verified transcripts, official English test scores and demonstrated funding via the I-20 financial documents to convert an admission letter into an F-1 visa approval.

| Total monthly | 2,040 to 2,840 | 1,94,718 to 2,71,078 |
| Total annual | 24,480 to 34,080 | 23.36 lakh to 32.53 lakh (estimated) |
[Source: Collegedunia and market estimates; UMass Boston does not publish a single official annual COL figure]
Insider note: Shared apartments in Dorchester and Quincy Point often cost 30% less than downtown Boston. Indian students taking the MBTA Red Line reach campus in 10 to 15 minutes, cutting rent without adding commute time.
University of Massachusetts, Boston Campus, Facilities and Student Life
UMass Boston occupies a single 177-acre waterfront campus on Columbia Point, three miles south of downtown Boston and adjacent to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.
- Location and transport: The JFK/UMass MBTA Red Line stop connects the campus to downtown Boston in 10 to 15 minutes; a free campus shuttle runs from the station
- Housing: On-campus West Garage and Bayside residences cost USD 1,200 to USD 1,700 per month; the university does not guarantee international housing beyond the first year
- Facilities: Healey Library holds over one million volumes, and the Integrated Sciences Complex houses wet labs, a marine research pier and clinical simulation suites
- Indian community: The Indian Students Association and South Asian Student Council organise Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; over 700 Indian students study on campus
What Indian students say: Indian students consistently highlight the affordable Dorchester and Quincy off-campus rental belt, the JFK/UMass Red Line link to downtown internships, and the accessibility of professors during office hours as key reasons they chose UMass Boston over more expensive private options.
University of Massachusetts, Boston Scholarships 2027
UMass Boston runs a limited set of merit and need-based scholarships for international students, most awarded automatically at admission review rather than through separate applications.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Merit Scholarship | Merit-based (UG) | USD 5,000 to USD 12,000 per year (INR 4.77 lakh to INR 11.45 lakh) | Class 12 with strong academic record; automatic at admission | Same as UG deadlines |
| Graduate Assistantship | Tuition + stipend (PG) | Tuition waiver + monthly stipend | Enrolled PG students; competitive by department | Program-specific; verify at official page |
| Dissertation Year Fellowship | PhD funding | USD 12,000 (INR 11.45 lakh) | PhD candidates in the dissertation year | Verify at official page |
| Graduate Research Opportunities Grant | Research grant | Up to USD 2,000 (INR 1.91 lakh) | PG and PhD students pursuing independent research | Rolling |
| PhD Funding Package | Full funding (PhD) | Tuition waiver + living stipend + health insurance for 3 years | Admitted PhD students in eligible programs | Program-specific; verify at official page |
[Source: UMass Boston Financial Aid Services and program-specific pages]
Planning note: Graduate assistantships and the full PhD funding package are the strongest cost-cutters for Indian applicants. Applying by the priority deadline (typically two months before final) meaningfully raises the odds of an assistantship offer, especially in MS Computer Science, MS Nursing and PhD tracks.

Key insight: The US News #213 National rank and #42 Social Mobility rank matter more to Indian applicants than the QS band. US employers and Indian recruiters recognise US News National rank, and social mobility scores signal strong post-study outcomes for first-generation international students.

University of Massachusetts, Boston Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UMass Boston graduates enter the Boston metro job market with strong recruiter access across healthcare, finance, technology and public policy sectors, supported by the Career Engagement and Coaching Office and on-campus recruiting events.
- Career support: Career Engagement and Coaching offers resume review, mock interviews, employer meetups and Handshake job portal access for all enrolled students
- Median starting salary (market median): Massachusetts Bachelor’s holders earn about USD 62,000 per year (INR 59.18 lakh); MBA and MS graduates in tech tracks trend higher, though UMass Boston does not publish a single institutional placement figure
- Representative employers: Massachusetts General Brigham, State Street, Fidelity Investments, Boston Consulting Group, Massachusetts state agencies and Boston-area tech firms actively recruit from UMass Boston (verify latest recruiters at Career Services)
- Post-study work: F-1 graduates receive 12 months of OPT with a 24-month STEM extension for MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics and MS Information Technology graduates, totalling up to 36 months
- Alumni network: Over 1,00,000 alumni across the US, with visible representation in Boston healthcare, Massachusetts state government and East Coast financial services
Insider note: Indian graduates rely heavily on the campus career fair each October and February to convert internships into H-1B sponsorship. Building relationships with the Career Engagement office in the first semester (rather than the graduating semester) is the strongest predictor of a paid US role after OPT.
University of Massachusetts, Boston vs Peer Universities
UMass Boston competes with other Boston metro publics and mid-tier private research universities. Peer benchmarks help Indian applicants weigh cost, selectivity and rank fit.
| University | QS World 2027 | Avg PG Fee/Year (USD) | Avg PG Fee/Year (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Massachusetts, Boston | #1001-1200 | 30,461 | 29.08 lakh | Affordable public in Boston with strong social mobility rank |
| Boston University | #108 | 65,000 | 62.04 lakh (estimated) | High-rank private with global brand and dense alumni network |
| University of Massachusetts Amherst | #193 | 36,000 | 34.36 lakh (estimated) | Flagship of the UMass system with stronger STEM research funding |
| Northeastern University | #292 | 62,000 | 59.18 lakh (estimated) | Co-op program built into every graduate track |
| University of Massachusetts Lowell | #801-850 | 29,000 | 27.68 lakh (estimated) | Public with strong engineering and lower cost of living |
| Suffolk University | NA | 44,000 | 42.00 lakh (estimated) | Central Boston campus with business and law focus |
UMass Boston stands out as the lowest-cost accredited public research option inside city limits, and it beats every peer on the US News Social Mobility list. Indian applicants prioritising tuition-to-salary ratio and STEM OPT eligibility find the balance harder to beat at private peers.
The University of Massachusetts, Boston fits Indian applicants who want a US degree without carrying private-tier debt. With a graduate all-in cost of around USD 55,000 per year (INR 52.50 lakh) against Massachusetts median entry-level salaries near USD 62,000, the tuition-to-salary ratio is defensible for STEM MS graduates using 36 months of OPT under an F-1 visa. Boston’s healthcare, finance and technology clusters, combined with the #42 US News Social Mobility rank, further raise the odds of a first US role.
UMass Boston is not the right fit if brand recognition, high global rank or a dense private alumni network drives the choice. Applicants prioritising QS top-200 or elite recruiting should compare against public universities in USA such as UMass Amherst or private options like Boston University before committing.
