Northern Arizona University Admission 2027
Northern Arizona University offers two intakes each year: Fall (August) and Spring (January). Fall is the primary intake for Indian graduate applicants and covers the widest programme mix. Application review is rolling for most tracks but Indian applicants should target published priority deadlines to secure I-20 processing time.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 intake international priority window | Verify at NAU Center for International Education | Submit early to allow I-20 issue and visa slot booking |
| Spring 2027 classes begin | January 11, 2027 | Confirmed by NAU academic calendar |
| Fall 2027 international priority deadline | Expected March 2027 (based on prior cycle) | Verify at nau.edu/admissions before applying |
| Fall 2027 classes begin | Expected August 2027 (based on prior cycle) | Confirm via NAU academic calendar closer to intake |
Planning note: Start credential evaluation with WES or ECE six to eight weeks before the priority deadline. Indian transcripts and consolidated marksheets need time for course-by-course evaluation, especially for STEM applicants using older institutional formats.

Northern Arizona University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Northern Arizona University sets modest academic thresholds for Indian applicants and accepts multiple English tests. Meeting the minimum band does not guarantee admission for the most competitive tracks.
Postgraduate applicants:
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university with GPA 3.0/4.0 (Indian equivalent 65%); competitive tracks look for 70% or higher
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 70 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE 55 or Duolingo 95; higher for MBA and Nursing
- WES or ECE course-by-course credential evaluation for all Indian transcripts
- GRE waiver available for most engineering and computing MS tracks; GMAT waiver on managerial experience for MBA
Undergraduate applicants:
- Class 12 (10+2) with 65% or above from CBSE, ICSE or a recognised state board
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 70 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 6.0; Nursing requires IELTS 6.5
- SAT or ACT is optional for most undergraduate tracks
Key insight: Indian applicants who completed English-medium instruction at Class 12 or bachelor’s level can request an IELTS or TOEFL waiver by submitting an official medium-of-instruction letter. NAU accepts these on a case-by-case basis through the Center for International Education.
Northern Arizona University Acceptance Rate 2027
Northern Arizona University reports an overall acceptance rate of 91% with the international applicant rate estimated at 93.4%. NAU is not a highly selective public research university, which works in favour of Indian applicants meeting the published academic and English cutoffs.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 (latest reported) | 91% overall; 93.4% international | Stable, non-selective |
| 2025 | Approximately 91% (estimated figure) | Stable |
The high acceptance rate reflects NAU’s mid-tier regional profile rather than programme quality. Indian applicants still face competitive review for MS Computer Science, MPH and MBA where cohort sizes are managed.
Reality check: A 91% acceptance rate does not mean automatic admission. Indian applicants below the 65% Indian-equivalent GPA threshold or the TOEFL iBT 70 (0-120 legacy scale) English cutoff still receive denials.

Northern Arizona University Tuition Fees for Indian Students 2027
The 2026-27 fee schedule sets non-resident tuition and mandatory fees at fixed annual rates. Programme-specific college fees add a small variable amount.
| Level | Annual tuition (USD) | Annual tuition + fees (USD) | Annual tuition + fees (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|

Northern Arizona University Cost of Living in Flagstaff for Indian Students
Flagstaff carries higher living costs than nearby Phoenix due to smaller housing supply and altitude-driven utility bills. Indian students should budget conservatively for the first semester before on-campus or off-campus accommodation settles.
| Category | Monthly (USD) | Monthly (INR) |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation (shared off-campus) | USD 650 | INR 62,270 |
| Food and groceries | USD 400 | INR 38,320 |
| Transportation | USD 100 | INR 9,580 |
| Books and study materials | USD 100 | INR 9,580 |
| Personal and utilities | USD 250 | INR 23,950 |
| Total monthly | USD 1,500 | INR 1.44 lakh |
| Annual (10 months) | USD 15,000 | INR 14.37 lakh |
Insider note: A two-bedroom shared apartment near NAU averages USD 1,300 to USD 1,600 per month, splitting to USD 650 to USD 800 per student. Indian groceries are limited in Flagstaff and most students drive to Phoenix once a month for stocked stores.

Northern Arizona University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The Northern Arizona University Flagstaff campus spans 738 acres at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, roughly two hours north of Phoenix by road. Public transit connects campus to downtown Flagstaff and the local Amtrak station.
- Location and transport: Flagstaff sits at 7,000 feet elevation with a free student bus network across campus and the city
- Housing: On-campus room and board runs USD 14,432 per year (INR 13.83 lakh); guaranteed for first-year international students
- Notable facilities: Cline Library open 24 hours during finals, the Health and Learning Center gym, and the W A Franke College of Business trading room
- Indian student community: Small but active graduate cohort; Diwali, Holi and Independence Day events run through the CIE
What Indian students say: Flagstaff weather is a significant adjustment for Indian students; winters bring heavy snow and average lows of minus 8 degrees Celsius. Layered clothing and snow tyres are essential purchases in the first two months.
Northern Arizona University Scholarships 2027
According to Northern Arizona University, 97% of admitted students receive some form of scholarship support when they meet published criteria. Only a handful of awards are ring-fenced for international applicants and none are India-specific.
| Scholarship | Type | Award value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International Excellence Award | Merit (partial tuition waiver) | Partial tuition waiver; amount varies | International UG/PG applicants meeting GPA and language bands | April 15 priority; verify at NAU CIE |
| President’s IB Scholarship | Merit | USD 5,000 per year (INR 4.79 lakh) | International Baccalaureate diploma holders entering first year | Verify at NAU CIE |
| Graduate Assistantships | Research or teaching | Tuition waiver plus monthly stipend | Full-time PG students matched to programme need | Programme-specific; verify at NAU Graduate College |
| NAU Foundation Scholarships | Need-based | Amount varies | Enrolled students meeting demonstrated need thresholds | April 15 priority; verify at NAU Foundation |
Indian applicants comparing options against MBA-focused US public universities should note that NAU’s assistantship pool is smaller than at ASU or the University of Arizona. Graduate Assistantships remain the most valuable award because they combine tuition waiver with a stipend.
Planning note: Applying for a Graduate Assistantship requires direct outreach to the target department beyond the standard admissions application. Indian applicants who email prospective faculty by October raise their odds ahead of the Spring intake decision.

Northern Arizona University Rankings 2027
As per QS World University Rankings 2027, Northern Arizona University sits in the #1001-1200 band, unchanged from 2026 and 2025. US News places NAU at #244 among US National Universities in the 2026 edition, its strongest listed body ranking.
| Ranking Body | 2027 | 2026 | 2025 |

NAU also appears in the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU) at #501-600 in the 2025 edition. The Carnegie Classification lists NAU as R1: Doctoral Universities, very high research activity, which places it in the top research tier of US publics regardless of world-table position.
Key insight: World-ranking band matters less for Indian applicants at NAU than the US News National rank of #244 and the R1 research classification. Both signals matter for H-1B employer screening and for education loan approval from Indian banks.
Northern Arizona University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Northern Arizona University does not publish consolidated placement statistics for graduate cohorts through a central portal. The NAU Career Development office supports on-campus recruiting, employer info sessions and virtual connections across engineering, health sciences, hospitality and business tracks.
- Placement rate: Not officially disclosed by NAU for graduate programmes
- Median starting salary: Not officially disclosed; market medians for US public mid-tier PG cohorts typically span USD 55,000 to 70,000 (INR 52.69 to 67.06 lakh) depending on discipline (market estimate, not NAU-specific)
- Recruiting sectors: Aerospace, mechanical engineering, health services, hospitality management, information technology, public administration (representative sectors; NAU does not publish a top recruiter list)
- Career services: Individual advising, employer info sessions and 36-month OPT plus STEM extension eligibility for Indian graduates
Insider note: Indian STEM graduates gain 36 months of US work eligibility through OPT and the STEM extension after MS Computer Science, MS Engineering, MPH or MSc Informatics. Verify programme CIP codes on the NAU international portal before accepting an offer.
Northern Arizona University vs Peer Universities
NAU competes for Indian applicants against its two in-state Arizona peers, plus regional R1 publics in Colorado and Utah. The table below sets NAU’s confirmed numbers against peers where third-party data was not verified this session.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Acceptance Rate | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD/INR) | Median Salary (USD/INR) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Arizona University | #1001-1200 | 91% | USD 33,800 (INR 32.38 lakh) | Not disclosed | R1 research, small-city Flagstaff setting |
| University of Arizona | Verify at QS 2027 | Approximately 87% (market estimate) | Similar band; verify at official site | NA | Flagship land-grant status with medical school |
| Arizona State University | Verify at QS 2027 | Approximately 90% (market estimate) | Similar band; verify at official site | NA | Larger Phoenix-metro research scale |
| Colorado State University | Verify at QS 2027 | Approximately 91% (market estimate) | Similar band; verify at official site | NA | Nearby R1 with strong veterinary programme |
NAU stands apart on scale and setting. Its Flagstaff campus is significantly smaller than ASU’s Phoenix-metro system and quieter than the University of Arizona’s Tucson footprint. R1 status keeps NAU competitive on doctoral offerings despite the QS world-table gap.
Insider note: Indian applicants comparing NAU with ASU should weigh cohort scale against faculty access. NAU’s smaller graduate classes typically mean faster access to research assistantships and closer thesis mentoring.
Northern Arizona University fits Indian graduate applicants seeking an R1 US public research experience without the intensity of a large flagship campus. The total two-year investment lands near USD 71,000 (INR 68 lakh) covering tuition and Flagstaff living costs, weighed against median starting salaries in the US mid-tier public band.
Indian STEM graduates access the OPT and STEM extension pathway through NAU, alongside US graduate MS programmes serving as a strong long-term F-1 progression route. The Flagstaff Indian student community is small but well-supported by the Center for International Education.
NAU is not the right fit for applicants targeting Ivy League tier prestige, dense metropolitan internships or the highest US News research rankings. Arizona State University offers a closer analog if metropolitan scale and larger alumni networks matter more than a quieter research setting.
Northern Arizona University FAQs
Ques. Does Northern Arizona University waive the GRE for MS applicants from India?
Ans. NAU waives the GRE for many MS programmes when applicants hold a strong undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (Indian equivalent 65%). The College of Engineering, Informatics and Applied Sciences applies waivers programme by programme. MBA applicants can request a GMAT waiver based on managerial work experience. Confirm waiver eligibility with the programme coordinator through the NAU Graduate College portal before submission.
Ques. Can NAU international students work part-time during studies?
Ans. F-1 visa holders at NAU may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during regular semesters and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus employment requires prior authorisation through Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training after completing one academic year. The Center for International Education issues the necessary documentation. Students should never begin off-campus work without written CIE authorisation.
Ques. What is the application fee at Northern Arizona University for Indian applicants?
Ans. The application fee is USD 75 (INR 7,185) for graduate international applicants and USD 65 (INR 6,227) for undergraduate international applicants, both non-refundable. NAU occasionally issues fee waivers during recruitment campaigns and for specific programmes. Payment is processed online through the Graduate College or Undergraduate Admissions portal using a credit card or bank transfer. Verify current fees at nau.edu/admissions before submission.
Ques. What is the conditional offer process at NAU for below-cutoff English scores?
Ans. NAU issues conditional admission letters to academically strong applicants whose English scores fall below programme minimums. Conditional admits enrol in the Program in Intensive English through the CIE, progressing to full academic status upon meeting language benchmarks. Some programmes bridge conditional students into their first term with an academic plus language load. Duration typically runs one to three semesters depending on starting proficiency.
Ques. Is an admission interview required at Northern Arizona University?
Ans. Interviews are not required for most Northern Arizona University graduate and undergraduate programmes. MBA applicants and selected doctoral candidates may be invited to a virtual interview after initial file review. Nursing, physician assistant and certain doctoral applicants complete formal interviews as part of standard admissions. Applicants receive interview requests by email; check inbox and spam folders during the review window.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for NAU students?
Ans. HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Axis Bank and Auxilo commonly finance Indian students attending NAU. Both secured and unsecured education loans are available depending on collateral. Digital lenders such as Prodigy Finance and MPower Financing also underwrite NAU offers without Indian collateral. Compare interest rates, moratorium periods and processing fees before locking in a lender.
Ques. What documents does Northern Arizona University need for Indian transcript verification?
Ans. Northern Arizona University accepts course-by-course credential evaluations from WES, ECE or SpanTran. Indian applicants must upload attested transcripts, degree certificates and consolidated marksheets through the online application, and arrange for the evaluator to send verified reports directly to NAU. Provisional certificates are accepted with the final degree following within one term. Apostille is not mandatory but strengthens the file.
Ques. Can dependents accompany NAU students on F-2 dependent visas?
Ans. F-2 dependent visa holders can accompany NAU students. The primary applicant issues an I-20 for each dependent through the CIE after presenting financial evidence covering roughly USD 8,000 (INR 7.66 lakh) per dependent per year. Dependents cannot work in the United States. Children may attend K-12 public schools free of charge in the Flagstaff Unified School District.

- The Campus Experience at NAU is the best; it is a very large campus with beautiful architecture and awesome views to the mountains covered in snow; it has a huge library with a lot of useful resources; there are around 10 to 15 grounds for students to play; and they also have a huge gym with best-in-class equipment for students.

- The college ranking is not that good. It is around 249 ranking in USA.
- In career fairs most companies don't visit this for IT and CS students. Its almost the same in many colleges.

- There are every facility, like a library, sports, and medical services, available in this university.
- For Indian students, holi and diwali will be celebrated. There will be many hackathons. clubs are there to join and build our network.
Fees
- Tuition would be $13,000 per semester. If we get a $5,000 international excellence award. For 3 credits, it would cost $3500. We need to pay it semester-wise.
- The monthly expense depends on us. It will be around $500 to $1,000 for overall expenses.
- For rent, it will be $400 per month if we are staying off campus and if we stay on campus it will be 1,000. For groceries, 100$. Remaining things depends on us how much we spend for other things.

- I chose this university to work with Dr.Bertrand Cambou who is well known for his cybersystems research with US army
- Research opportunities, professors pushing students to do more- it can get frustrating but we understand it's value later, Library, gym, safety - police car keeps moving around the university to make sure no one is unsafe, access to all the information, life in Flagstaff is amazing with beautiful san Francisco peaks, snow, professors being extremely helpful - note that you need to ask for help to get support and help. No one will come and help without you asking for it. The healthcare is amazing here, every student is attended well and with care.
Dislikes
- The fact that they don't have Indian food on campus. Some information on how to pick classes also can be a little clearer. We had to ask other people on how to pick classes. But now they have a advisor who helps everyone with classes to pick so I don't know how that changes things for future students
Overview
My university experience has been amazing. I started off as a Masters student and with the research opportunities given to me i completed my masters in computer science and continued my education for my Doctoral degree. In 4.5 years I earned a masters and a PhD degree from this esteemed university. The connections I made here will last forever and the fun with all events and sports is unforgettable. With the research I did, I am able to get a job immediately after graduation and I am really thankful for that.
Campus Life
The campus is huge and has a huge library which not only provides us with books but also laptop, tablets, 3D printers, cameras, and more. They have a IT department right there that can help with fixing laptop or any electronic items. They have multiple computers in the library to use and work on. Every place in the campus has WiFi. They have multiple events celebrating every culture like Indian, italian, Chinese, Korean, and more. It's an never ending list. People on campus are very accepting and helpful. Overview
My overall experience is very good till now. It is some what hectic with assignments, cooking, cleaning and stuff. but was good.
Campus Life
the campus life was very good, we have so many indoor and outdoor grounds that encourage the students to participate in various activities and keep themselves fit and active.
Overview
I chose this college for its change in the environment and also the ease of the application process. It was only $50 to apply and was very easy to complete. I applied to only 2 schools and was accepted in just a couple of months. I also loved this college for its small-town appeal. Flagstaff is a beautiful and small city that was perfect for college students. I loved how the professors connected with me and my classes were never too big, so I could have that connection with my professors and other students.
Fees
Since it was an in-state school, I paid $24,000 a year for tuition, room, and board and other miscellaneous fees. I was able to afford college by becoming an RA to get my room and board paid for. I did have to take out a few personal loans through Sallie Mae but also received a scholarship (President's scholarship, $6,000) that was awarded for my GPA.
