Northern Arizona University Master of Science in Computer Science is a 30-unit, full-time, on-campus graduate degree in Flagstaff, Arizona. For Spring 2027, 2026-27 charges are US$36,445 (INR 34.90 Lakhs) per year, and two-year academic charges calculate to US$72,890 (INR 69.80 Lakhs). Admission requires a related bachelor’s degree and 3.0 Grade Point Average on 4.0, approximately 75% to 80% or 7.5 to 8.0 on 10 for Indian applicants.

The curriculum develops computer systems skills across networks, graphics, high-performance computing, cybersecurity, machine learning, data science and software engineering. Every student completes a substantive development or research project, while thesis study adds faculty-mentored research and a defended thesis. The course suits applicants with programming foundations who want professional preparation through non-thesis study or a doctoral route through thesis work.

  • The programme connects computing with application areas such as biology, ecology and astronomy.
  • International students can pursue the Flagstaff route with full-time student visa enrollment requirements.
  • Eligible first-time Flagstaff F-1 graduate students can be considered for up to US$11,000 (INR 10.53 Lakhs) per year through the International Excellence Award.

Current Admission Status

Applications for the Spring 2027 intake are Open. International student deadline: 01 October 2026.

NAU’s current graduate schedule lists 1 October for Spring Computer Science admission and no Summer entry. Indian applicants should submit scores and transcripts before the portal cutoff because the page does not publish a time or timezone.

NAU MS Computer Science Fees and Living Costs 2027

For Spring 2027, NAU’s 2026-27 schedule applies to two academic semesters. The fee table separates tuition, mandatory charges, the exact Computer Science programme fee, the enrollment charge and the conflicted application fee.

NAU lists the Computer Science programme fee at US$510 (INR 48,839) per Fall or Spring semester. The exact-course academic total is calculated from tuition, mandatory fees and two programme-fee semesters.

ChargeAmount (USD)INR equivalentFrequency or interpretation

All INR conversions in the article use a conversion rate of USD 1 = INR 95.763 as of 25 August 2026. Rates fluctuate daily, verify before applying.

  • The calculated academic charge is US$36,445 (INR 34.90 Lakhs) per academic year before housing, meals, books and insurance.
  • The US$325 (INR 31,123) international enrollment fee is separate and non-refundable for new F-1 students.
  • Because official materials show two application-fee amounts, check the Spring 2027 portal before paying or finalising a loan request.

Cost of Living in Flagstaff for Computer Science Students

NAU’s international estimate covers shared on-campus housing, a 10-meal-per-week plan, books and mandatory student health insurance. Monthly values below are calculated by dividing official annual figures by 12.

ExpenseMonthly (USD)Monthly (INR)Annual (USD)Annual (INR)
NAU on-campus shared housingUS$708.25INR 67,824US$8,499INR 8.14 Lakhs
MealsUS$575.67INR 55,128US$6,908INR 6.62 Lakhs
Books and suppliesUS$75.00INR 7,182US$900INR 86,187
NAU student health insuranceUS$239.67INR 22,951US$2,876INR 2.75 Lakhs
Total estimated living and insurance costsUS$1,598.58INR 1.53 LakhsUS$19,183INR 18.37 Lakhs

NAU’s official living estimate is US$19,183 (INR 18.37 Lakhs) for the academic year. It excludes personal expenses, transportation and summer costs, so the university estimate is not a complete cash budget.

A calculated two-year all-in planning budget is US$111,256 (INR 1.07 Crore): two times the exact-course academic charge plus the official living and insurance estimate. This illustration assumes two academic years and is not a university-published invoice.

Use the NAU international cost-of-attendance page to verify the I-20 estimate because generic graduate program fees can differ from the Computer Science rate.

Student perspective

One detailed course entry describes Flagstaff accommodation as costly, including a two-bedroom flat example. Another entry mentions limited Indian food options; check current housing and meal choices through the validated student reviews before committing.

These comments are anecdotal and do not replace official Northern Arizona University data.

ROI reality: The exact-course academic charge is clear, but the two-year budget reaches INR 1.07 Crore before excluded personal costs. Secure written funding and price Flagstaff housing before accepting an offer.

NAU MS Computer Science Admission 2027

Admission to the Spring 2027 MS in Computer Science requires a related bachelor’s degree, the Computer Science milestone, an essay or personal statement and recommendations. NAU also applies a Grade Point Average (GPA) baseline of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, although the programme can set higher standards.

NAU states that graduate admission is competitive, so meeting the university baseline does not secure a place. The strongest applicants will show programming preparation and explain whether their goal is project-based professional work or thesis-led research.

Academic Eligibility and Course Fit

The table separates the university baseline from the programme-specific evidence required for the current Spring 2027 route. Indian applicants should map their transcript to the milestone subjects before submitting the application.

RequirementNAU Spring 2027 standardIndian applicant action
Academic degreeBachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related fieldShow programming, algorithms, systems or related preparation in the transcript and statement.
Academic benchmarkGPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scaleApproximately 75% to 80%, or CGPA 7.5 to 8.0 on 10, subject to NAU’s equivalency decision.
Computer Science milestonePass the Initial Skills Inventory Exam, or complete Computer Science (CS) 500 and CS 501 before graduate-level CS coursesAsk the department whether your prior coursework is sufficient before choosing a course plan.
Written evidenceEssay, letter of intent or personal statementConnect one technical project to the non-thesis or thesis route you intend to follow.
RecommendationsRecommendation or reference lettersChoose referees who can verify technical preparation, research ability or project execution.
International recordsOfficial transcripts and required translations for international studyArrange institutional delivery and English translations before the application cutoff.

The milestone is the main programme-specific screening risk for applicants from adjacent fields. Passing the Initial Skills Inventory Exam can avoid the stated CS 500 and CS 501 preparation route before graduate coursework.

Applicants who need those courses should ask whether the additional study changes their completion plan or funding need. The thesis option also requires a research advisor and a final thesis defence, so research-oriented applicants should identify suitable faculty interests early.

No programme-specific ranking was verified for this MS in Computer Science. An overall university position would not answer whether your transcript, milestone preparation or thesis goals fit the course.

English Language Proficiency for Indian Applicants

NAU’s current international graduate policy lists minimum English scores for most programmes, and Computer Science is not separately listed with a different threshold. The international graduate requirements page gives the following current scale and submission rules.

TOEFL means Test of English as a Foreign Language. NAU currently publishes the TOEFL iBT minimum on the 0 to 120 scale, so applicants should not self-convert it to the newer 1.0 to 6.0 reporting scale.

Accepted testPublished minimumScore submission
TOEFL iBT, Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test80 on a 0 to 120 scaleSend directly through Educational Testing Service using NAU institutional code 4006.
IELTS, International English Language Testing System6.5 overallSend scores to gradinternational@nau.edu for verification.
Duolingo English Test105Send scores directly from Duolingo to NAU.

Source: NAU international graduate admission policy and the 2026-27 Computer Science catalog.

  • Send your English score directly to NAU before the 1 October 2026 Spring deadline because an uploaded score report may not satisfy verification.
  • Use IELTS if its score-reporting route is easier for you, but confirm that every required result reaches NAU before the application is reviewed.
  • Request a written waiver decision only if you hold a degree from a United States institution or meet NAU’s stated English-speaking-country condition.
Tip for Indian students: Treat the 3.0 GPA as a baseline, not a selection guarantee. Prove CS preparation, clear the milestone route and send an accepted English score directly before 1 October 2026.

NAU MS Computer Science Application 2027

Spring 2027 is the next applicant-accessible intake, with a current published deadline of 1 October 2026. The programme also lists Fall admission, while Summer admission is unavailable.

NAU’s deadline page gives dates without a cutoff time or timezone. Indian applicants should submit before the displayed date and confirm the portal cutoff in the application system.

Spring 2027 Application Timeline

The NAU graduate deadline schedule lists one programme deadline rather than separate domestic and international rows. The table therefore distinguishes the current Spring date from the next expected Fall cycle.

IntakeApplication deadlineDecision dateStatus and applicant action
Spring 20271 October 2026Not publishedOpen under the current schedule; submit the complete file before the portal closes.
Fall 2027Expected 15 June 2027Not publishedExpected from the recurring current schedule; verify the target-year date before applying.
Summer 2027Admission not availableNot applicableDo not plan a Summer start for this MS in Computer Science.

The Spring deadline is the immediate decision point because the current date is 25 August 2026. NAU does not publish a decision date, so transcript delivery and English-score verification should be completed before the application is submitted.

Application Package and Sequence

NAU requires the graduate online application, transcripts and the programme-specific statement and recommendation evidence. International applicants also need English proof, translated records where required, a passport copy and financial documentation after admission.

The Computer Science milestone should be addressed in the statement when your bachelor’s degree is adjacent to computing. Explain the inventory-exam plan or prior coursework clearly because the department may require CS 500 and CS 501 before graduate-level study.

NAU’s current pages do not publish a separate Computer Science interview stage or decision date. The practical selection task is a complete technical and academic file that reaches the department before the programme cutoff.

  • Submit in September 2026 after checking that transcripts, English scores, recommendations and the statement are all ready.
  • Ask the department whether your prior programming and mathematics courses satisfy the milestone before paying the conflicting application charge.
  • Prepare financial evidence early because NAU requires proof of support before issuing the immigration document.

Application tip: Use 1 October 2026 as the Spring 2027 programme cutoff, then work backward from transcript and score reporting times. Confirm the portal’s application fee and cutoff time before final submission.

NAU MS Computer Science Scholarships 2027

The clearest current funding route for international MS Computer Science applicants is the International Excellence Award. It offers up to US$11,000 (INR 10.53 Lakhs) per year toward NAU tuition and fees.

Graduate assistantships can reduce the larger tuition burden, but they are selected through academic units and do not remove every charge. NAU does not publish a separate Spring 2027 Computer Science award deadline on the checked funding pages.

Funding Routes for International Graduate Students

The table distinguishes a current published award from assistantship routes and a closed graduate scholarship cycle. Amounts are not deductions from the budget until NAU issues written terms.

The International Excellence Award requires no separate application, but it still depends on direct admission and completed I-20 documents. This means the award can reduce the funding gap, but it does not replace proof of full financial support during the visa process.

A Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) supports teaching in undergraduate courses and labs. The School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems states that international students need TOEFL 90 or an equivalent score for GTA consideration.

A Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA) is tied to faculty-funded research rather than a universal merit pool. A research-focused applicant should match a faculty project and explain the method or technical contribution they can bring.

  • Submit the complete admission and I-20 documentation needed for automatic International Excellence Award consideration.
  • Keep the exact Computer Science programme and university fees in your budget because assistantships exclude university and programme fees.
  • Target TOEFL 90 or an equivalent score if you want GTA consideration, even though the admission minimum is TOEFL 80.
  • Contact faculty before relying on GRA funding because each research award depends on project funding and fit.

Review the current NAU graduate scholarship guidance after admission because eligibility, remission mechanics and deadlines are managed by the university or academic unit.

Scholarship reality: The International Excellence Award is the only clearly quantified international award found for this route. Treat assistantships as material upside, but fund the degree as if no award is granted until written terms state the remission and stipend.

NAU MS Computer Science Salary 2027

An exact-course two-year planning budget is US$111,256 (INR 1.07 Crore) before personal and transportation costs. NAU does not publish a course-cohort salary, offer rate or placement report for this MS, so ROI depends on funding and student-built evidence.

The curriculum supports software, data, systems and research directions, but the university’s named employers and applications are qualitative examples. They do not establish a typical graduate destination or a placement probability for Spring 2027 students.

NAU’s official course evidence supports a choice between professional preparation and thesis research, not a salary guarantee. A student targeting US employment should turn the substantive project into a portfolio, internship or research narrative that matches the intended role.

The BLS figures are gross occupational benchmarks, not take-home pay. Taxes, health deductions, location, experience and employer benefits change the amount available for loan repayment, so use a current tax calculator before modelling cash flow.

For an India-return plan, the absence of course-cohort outcomes is a material risk. Compare the full calculated budget and loan terms with the specific Indian roles you can target after building the degree’s software, data or research evidence.

The following ROI factors are parallel financial decisions rather than a payback forecast.

  • The calculated two-year cost is US$111,256 (INR 1.07 Crore) before excluded expenses, so secure a funding reserve beyond the official estimate.
  • The exact course has no published salary or offer-rate report, so request current graduate destinations before treating the degree as a guaranteed employment investment.
  • The external software developer median is US$133,080 (INR 1.27 Crore) gross, so use it as market context and not as expected starting pay.
  • The International Excellence Award can reduce tuition by up to US$11,000 (INR 10.53 Lakhs) per year, so obtain the written award before reducing your loan amount.
  • US work planning may depend on a 12-month OPT period and a possible STEM extension, so verify the degree code and employer conditions before assuming a three-year window.
ROI reality: The course has a flexible technical and research proposition, but no course-level employment report. Base affordability on the calculated INR 1.07 Crore budget, then treat market wages and visa work time as conditional planning inputs.

United States Visa for NAU MS Computer Science Students 2027

Indian applicants need an F-1 student visa, the nonimmigrant classification for full-time academic study, after NAU issues admission documents. F-1 status requires the student to maintain the university’s enrolled course load and pursue the approved programme.

The F-1 visa application fee is US$185 (INR 17,716), while the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) I-901 fee is US$350 (INR 33,517). These government charges sit outside NAU’s academic and living-cost estimate, so include them in the pre-arrival cash plan.

Visa costAmount (USD)INR equivalentWhen it applies
F-1 visa application feeUS$185INR 17,716Before the student visa interview
SEVIS I-901 feeUS$350INR 33,517Before the F-1 visa appointment

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is the post-completion work permission associated with F-1 study. Eligible graduates can receive up to 12 months of standard OPT, while a qualifying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degree may support a further 24 months.

NAU identifies Computer Science among programmes with STEM OPT possibilities, but the exact Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code on the Form I-20 controls eligibility. Confirm that code and the employer conditions before treating a three-year work window as available.

  • Use the standard 12-month OPT period as the baseline, then verify the degree code and employer requirements for any 24-month STEM extension.
  • The H-1B route is employer-sponsored and uses the higher of actual or prevailing wage, so employment planning depends on a qualifying offer.
  • A spouse or unmarried minor child may apply for dependent status with a separate Form I-20, but dependants cannot work under that status.
  • Permanent residence has no fixed timeline linked to this degree because sponsorship, employment category, priority dates and visa availability control the route.

For Spring 2027, keep the visa fee, SEVIS payment and financial documents ready after admission because the immigration file follows the university offer and Form I-20 process.

Check Out: USA student visa resources

Visa reality: Standard OPT provides a 12-month baseline, while the longer STEM route is conditional. Verify the Form I-20 code, funding evidence and employer eligibility before relying on US work income.

Northern Arizona University MS in Computer Science suits Indian applicants with a related bachelor’s degree, programming preparation and a clear choice between project-led professional work and thesis research. Its 30-unit structure and Flagstaff setting create a calculable academic cost, but the two-year planning budget reaches INR 1.07 Crore before excluded personal and summer expenses. The principal tradeoff is technical breadth against no published course-level employment report and uncertain assistantship availability. For Spring 2027, verify the 1 October 2026 deadline, complete the English-score route and secure funding evidence before paying the portal fee.

NAU MS Computer Science FAQs

Ques. Is NAU’s MS Computer Science suitable for a thesis or professional route?

Ans. The 30-unit programme offers non-thesis coursework and project study plus a thesis route with faculty-mentored research and final defence. Choose non-thesis when your evidence is stronger in applied software projects, or thesis when you can identify research interests and advisor fit.

Ques. How much should an Indian applicant budget for two years?

Ans. Using 2026-27 charges and NAU’s official annual living estimate, the calculated two-year planning budget is US$111,256 (INR 1.07 Crore). It excludes personal, transportation and summer costs, so use the figure as a funding baseline rather than a final invoice.

Ques. Does NAU require TOEFL, and what score supports GTA consideration?

Ans. The current policy lists TOEFL iBT 80 on the 0 to 120 scale, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 105 for most graduate programmes. SICCS states that international students need TOEFL 90 or an equivalent score for GTA consideration, so that assistantship threshold is higher.

Ques. Can the International Excellence Award make the degree affordable?

Ans. The award offers up to US$11,000 (INR 10.53 Lakhs) per year without a separate application. Eligibility requires first-time degree-seeking Flagstaff admission, GPA 3.0 and completed I-20 documents. Assistantships can remit resident-rate tuition but exclude university and programme fees, so budget without an award until written terms arrive.

Ques. What work option follows graduation from this Computer Science MS?

Ans. Standard OPT allows up to 12 months, and a qualifying STEM code may support a 24-month extension. Verify the exact Form I-20 CIP code and employer conditions, because permanent residence has no fixed timeline tied to this course.

  • I have opted for off campus. You can find it better than on campus as it will be very less rent but we need to stay atleast 6 people in 1 apartment.
  • The rent will be 2000$ per apartment and depends on how many people stay in that to divide for each person.
  • Its better to ask most things before coming here to accommodate. Clearing rent amount and other bills and if we leave that apartment in between, we have to replace someone so taking everything in advance with lease owners will help a lot. Ask 4-5 members early to not have any issues after coming here.
