Michigan Technological University Campus

MTU is situated in the small town of Houghton is in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula overlooking the Keweenaw Waterway. This beauty stricken location of the campus helps the students to conduct research on nature and learn efficiently from the best available natural resources around. The 925 acres campus of MTU is known for its wide-ranged facilities, safety and of course The Dog (a nine-foot statured, 1,600 pound Husky Statue.)

  • Wide ranged facilities include many research centers, 7 schools and colleges offering about 120-degree programs, Rosza Center for the Performing Arts, the Walker Arts and Humanities Centre which is a house to Michigan Tech's Humanities Digital Media Zone, a modern language lab, the McArdle Theatre, and the Multiliteracies Center, a library with all modern upgrades required by the students and much more.
  • Beyond the campus, the students can avail of many more research centers not very far from the location like The Keweenaw Research Center (KRC) and The Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI).
  • While on campus, students can take part in various extracurricular activities like Mont Ripley ski and snowboard hill, Portage Lake Golf Course, Gates Tennis Center, Department of Visual and Performing Arts events, hockey games, a day of snowshoeing through the Outdoor Adventure Program, and intramural sports.

Accommodation/ Housing Facilities

MTU is one of the safest campuses in the USA, and so are its housing facilities. It provides three residence halls namely: Douglass Houghton Hall, McNair Hall, and Wadsworth Hall (each comes with a style of its own). The Hillside Place Apartments are apartment-style student accommodation available for transfer students, second-year or third-year students, and international students. All freshmen students are required to stay on campus residences unless staying with family or are married. 

  • Basic daily requirements are provided by all three halls with a varied number of rooms
  • Other facilities include game rooms, study rooms, lounges, laundry, kitchenettes, printers, cable TVs, etc.
  • Parking available on a first-come, first-served12 basis (parking permits are required for the same).
  • Meal plans will include access to any of the dining halls of MTU, unlimited meals and eight guest passes per semester are available for students. 
  • One can avail the dining centers on campus like the Campus Café, Library Café, Fusion, the North Coast Grill and Deli, Huski Cafe at Mont Ripley.

With a student-faculty ratio of 12:1, MTU provides about 120 graduate and undergraduate programs. It is a research-based university that aims at making the students ready for the real world.

  • All the degree programs at MTU are offered through its 7 schools and colleges. 
  • MTU offers students with associate, bachelor, minors, post-degree certificate, master, accelerated master, Ph.D., graduate certificate, and online programs. 
  • The most popular majors include majors in Engineering Technologies and Engineering-Related Fields, and Natural Resources and Conservation.
  • Degree programs offered are under arts, humanities, and social sciences; business and economics; computing; engineering; forestry and environmental sciences; health professions; mathematics; natural and physical sciences; and technology.
  • Dual enrolment program is offered to academically brilliant high school students to simultaneously enroll in the MTU college.

How to apply: To apply, one must visit the official website, complete their online application form, after which one is required to log into their MyMichiganTech account. Application status can be checked on the same.

Application fee: Free for all students irrespective of their nationality.

Application Deadline: There are no application deadlines for admissions to Michigan Technological University. However, it is recommended to fill in the forms for the fall semester by April 1, 2020, and September 1, 2020, for the spring semester.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

MTU provides various financial aid options in forms of scholarships, etc. to its students (resident, non-resident or international). All MTU students are automatically eligible for merit-based scholarships upon acceptance to the university. 

A few of the scholarships offered to international students are:

  • International Ambassador Scholarship: The students are awarded this scholarship amounting up to 3,100- 12,400 USD based on academic achievements (up to 4 years.)
  • Summers Youth Scholars Awards: This award is for new freshmen undergraduate students who took part in the Summer Youth academic program at MTU. Scholarship application needs to be submitted before November 15. The reward amount for Summers Youth Scholars Award varies. 
  • Athletic Grants: This award is granted by the Michigan coach to the students to have exceptional athletic talents to participate in the varsity teams. The award gives full-time tuition and fees, living and book allowance.
  • FIRST Robotic Scholarships: The incoming first-year undergraduate students are awarded 4,000 USD for having actively competed on a FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Tech Challenge, or VEX Robotics team during their high school career. Scholarship application needs to be submitted before November 15.

International students can also look for international scholarships or education loans to finance their studies in the USA. 

Work While You Study

MTU offers various opportunities for students to be able to expand their horizons. They offer work-study options, internships, co-ops, handshakes on campus and community jobs from retail to restaurant.

  • Work-study programs: This can be availed by the students if it is listed in their financial aid package. Students are authorized to work up to eight hours per week.
  • Internship: It might earn students credit and is directly concerned with the students and employers.
  • Co-op: This type of job helps students earn credits in an online course. This is concerned with the university, students and the employer, and helps professional growth of the students for a better career.

  • Barbara Jone (BS Biology Sciences 1992): This alumna loves animals and works towards protecting and treating them as a well-known veterinarian. She did her graduation in Biology in 1992 from MTU and then earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from the University of Prince Edward Island in 2004 and a certificate of residency training in animal shelter medicine from the University of California, Davis, in 2008.
