Indiana University Indianapolis Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants apply through IU Graduate CAS for postgraduate programmes and the IU Application or Common App for undergraduate admission. Requirements are set by the IU Indianapolis Graduate School and the Office of International Affairs.

Postgraduate applicants must meet:

  • Bachelor’s degree: Recognised 3- or 4-year Indian bachelor’s with CGPA 6.5/10 or 65% minimum (recommended by department standards; some Luddy programmes expect higher)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (or 4.0 on the new 1-6 scale from January 2026), IELTS Academic 6.5, Duolingo 110, PTE Academic 54, TOEFL Essentials 8
  • Credential verification: WES or ECE evaluation for foreign-earned bachelor’s degrees
  • Programme extras: GMAT 620 for Kelley MBA (verify at Kelley); GRE optional for most Luddy MS programmes; portfolio for design and informatics tracks

Undergraduate applicants must meet:

  • Class 12 completion: 70% to 85% typical (recommended); CBSE, ICSE and state boards accepted
  • English proficiency: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 60, Duolingo 90 minimum

Key insight: TOEFL now reports scores on both the legacy 0-120 scale and a new 1-6 band scale from January 2026, and reports through 2028 will show both. Indian students should confirm which score their target programme reviewer reads.

Indiana University Indianapolis Acceptance Rate 2027

Indiana University Indianapolis maintains an overall acceptance rate of approximately 81% (estimated), positioning it as a lightly selective institution accessible to well-prepared Indian applicants who meet the published academic and English proficiency minimums.

The 81% rate reflects institution-wide undergraduate admissions and does not apply uniformly across all graduate schools. Competitive tracks such as Kelley MBA, B.S. Nursing, and Luddy Computer Science apply higher programme-specific selectivity that Indian applicants should treat separately from the campus average.

Reality check: A high overall acceptance rate does not guarantee entry into competitive Luddy or Kelley programmes. Indian STEM master’s applicants should target CGPA 7.5/10 or higher and TOEFL 90+ to stay competitive within the applicant pool.

Indiana University Indianapolis vs Peer Universities

The peer set below compares Indiana University Indianapolis with mid-tier Midwest research universities and one accessible national peer, using QS World 2027, Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 USA ranks, and published annual PG fees for international students.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 (USA)Avg Annual PG Fee (USD/INR)One-line differentiator
Indiana University Indianapolis#1001-1200#75$21,204 / 20.3 lakhIU School of Medicine and Luddy STEM access

University of Missouri#641#85$27,750 / 26.6 lakhLand-grant research; larger campus

Indiana University Indianapolis stands out among Midwest peers on medical school and nursing programme depth. Its 81% acceptance rate makes it more accessible than most similarly-priced research universities, and the Luddy STEM master’s offer a cleaner OPT-to-employment pipeline than smaller regional peers. Indian applicants also compare it against MBA universities in USA for Kelley routes.

Indiana University Indianapolis suits Indian students seeking a mid-tier US research university with strong health sciences and STEM depth at $21,204 annual PG tuition against median post-graduation salaries of $60,000-$85,000. The 36-month STEM OPT extension supports the return on investment through structured work authorisation.

It is not the right fit for applicants seeking a top-100 QS brand or a traditional flagship residential campus. Consider Purdue University West Lafayette if engineering rankings matter more, or Indiana University Bloomington for a full flagship-campus experience with stronger Kelley MBA rankings.

Indiana University Indianapolis FAQs

Ques. What is the STEM OPT extension available for IU Indianapolis MS graduates?

Ans. Indiana University Indianapolis MS graduates in STEM-designated fields including Applied Data Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Health Informatics, and Human-Computer Interaction qualify for the 12-month post-completion OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Total post-study work authorisation reaches 36 months. Non-STEM master’s such as MBA and MPH stay at the standard 12-month OPT window without extension eligibility.

Ques. Can Indian students transfer credits from an Indian university to IU Indianapolis?

Ans. IU Indianapolis accepts transfer credits from Indian universities on a course-by-course basis. Applicants submit official transcripts through WES or ECE for course-level evaluation. Transfer credit review happens after admission, with departmental faculty confirming which courses count towards the specific programme. Undergraduate transfers commonly receive 30-60 credit transfers; graduate credit transfers cap at 6-8 semester credits.

Ques. Does Indiana University Indianapolis accept a 3-year Indian bachelor’s for master’s admission?

Ans. The IU Indianapolis Graduate School accepts 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees from institutions accredited by UGC or approved statutory bodies, subject to WES or ECE evaluation confirming US bachelor’s equivalency. Applicants from IITs, IIMs, NITs, and NAAC A-grade institutions typically qualify without a pre-master’s bridge. Applicants from less-recognised institutions may need a completed post-graduate diploma or master’s for the equivalency to hold.

Ques. What is the application fee for IU Indianapolis graduate programmes?

Ans. The standard application fee for international graduate applicants at Indiana University Indianapolis is $70 through the IU Graduate CAS portal, non-refundable. Some professional programmes including Kelley MBA charge higher application fees of $100-$125. Application fee waivers apply to McNair Scholars, active-duty US military, and specific fellowship-track applicants; Indian applicants generally do not qualify for waivers and should budget the fee separately from tuition.

Ques. Can international students work part-time on campus at IU Indianapolis?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at IU Indianapolis may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and full-time during official university breaks. Common on-campus roles include library assistant, dining services, IT helpdesk, and departmental research assistantships. Off-campus work requires prior USCIS authorisation through CPT or OPT after the first academic year, coordinated through the Office of International Affairs.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers cover IU Indianapolis tuition?

Ans. Major Indian education loan providers including HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial Services, Auxilo, InCred, and public sector banks such as SBI and Bank of Baroda cover IU Indianapolis tuition up to ₹1.5 crore for postgraduate programmes. International lenders MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance also fund IU Indianapolis MS admits without an Indian co-signer, priced against post-programme US salary potential rather than family collateral.

Ques. What documents does IU Indianapolis require for I-20 issuance?

Ans. After admission, IU Indianapolis requires a completed I-20 request form, a copy of the applicant’s passport bio page, and financial documentation showing liquid funds covering one full year of tuition and living expenses (approximately $45,000). Accepted proofs include bank statements from the sponsor within the past 6 months, an affidavit of support, and confirmed scholarship or assistantship letters. The I-20 is issued electronically through the Office of International Affairs.

Ques. Does IU Indianapolis waive the English test for Indian applicants with English-medium bachelor’s?

Ans. IU Indianapolis does not automatically waive the TOEFL or IELTS requirement for Indian applicants with English-medium bachelor’s degrees. The Office of International Affairs limits waivers to applicants holding a bachelor’s or higher from designated English-speaking countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Ireland. Indian applicants typically must submit valid TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or PTE scores meeting the campus minimums.

Overview

I got admitted into IUPUI through an accelerated Master's program in MOU with my undergrad institute Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College in Hyderabad, India. The admission and transition wasn't a hassle as IUPUI had a great international student services team who helped me with almost everything.

Campus Life

Campus life in IUPUI is really fascinating as the campus is located in Downtown Indianapolis, there is always something or the other happening in and around campus. There are seasonal fests and regular fests to keep students engaged and energetic. There are plenty of clubs for various functionalities from studies to music and even more on campus. I don't regret joining IUPUI.

Overview

Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis is a unique place for doctoral candidates. Courses here will feel more like discussion forums than classrooms. Typical student strength in a course is 4-6. Attention is paid by faculty to every student individually. Doctoral students are treated well and they even have lunch with faculty on a daily basis. Mostly it’s a research-centric institution and the highlight is the Doctoral programs, like for IITs the highlight is the undergraduate programs. The science departments are Purdue accredited which has a good global standing. These were some reasons for me to choose IUPUI.

Overview

Closeness to the downtown industry, making it easier and more manageable to have internships during the school year, amazing program with professors with lots of experience and connections, I like being downtown and not in such a small college town feeling space.

Fees

Tuition and Housing are the two big fees. It's a little less than $5,000/ semester for tuition and a little over $5,000/ semester for housing.

Overview

Great psychology program as well as many opportunities for students to do well. There are many programs and a variety of them. There are so many different things you can do. The city is great for us to do well.

Fees

There are fees for parking which can be a little crazy since there isn't much parking available for students it can be hard to find parking and if you park at the wrong place you end up getting a large bill for a ticket and that can get very pricey very quickly.
