Programs, Campus, and Residence

Programs

  • Bates is a baccalaureate collegeoffering various programs in different fields.
  • Bates offers 37 major and 25 minor programs. Some of the minor courses are neuroscience, rhetoric and some are interdisciplinary like American cultural studies, environmental studies.
  • The major courses include courses in science (like chemistry, biochemistry, physics, biology), politics, languages, arts, etc.
  • They also provide minor courses in Asian Studies, German & Russian Studies, Greek, and Latin.
  • Bates also provides a Dual Degree Engineering program. 
  • Students can study 3 years at Bates and the other two years in top Engineering schools like Case Western, Columbia, Dartmouth, etc.

Campus

  • Campus life includes various activities outside the classroom like arts, athletics, community engagement, participation in clubs and organizations, etc.
  • The university has created a safe and secure environment inside the campus. The service-oriented Department of Security and Campus Safety runs 24 hours. They patrol the campus on foot, bicycles, cars and sometimes golf carts.
  • Sustainability is taken quite seriously on the campus. They use renewable fuel oil, the dining waste is recycled or composted and not sent to the landfills and they produce their own vegetables for the dining. The college has almost become carbon neutral.

Residence

The college provides various types of residence and students can choose them according to their preference and budget. Most of the time the students don’t get their first preference because of the limited seats, so they are advised to apply for residence as early as possible. The students also have the option of opting for off-campus studenthousing to stay in the US.

Below are some of the housing options that a student can apply for:

  • Clason House - This is a healthy living community away from the presence of alcohol, tobacco, and any other drugs. This house accommodates 30 students with 2 Junior Advisors.
  • Frye House and Milliken House are only for the first-year students. They have a wonderful lounge space and plenty of green space. They both can accommodate 30 students.
  • There are 6 residential buildings that include the students of all the years. First-year students can stay here and interact with the senior students. 
  • These six buildings are 280 College Street, Chu & Kalperis, Page Hall, Parker Hall, Wentworth Adams hall, And Rand hall. And all these buildings include facilities like a fully equipped kitchen, beautiful lounge space, and study space.

Application Process

Bates College offers admission to students from around the world to study in the USA. The college offers admission in various programs and the registration for admission starts around August 1. The admission requirements for international students may vary from that of domestic students. The requirements are as follows:

Application Process:

  • Register for an on-campus interview or request for an off-campus interview with an alumnus.
  • Create an application account at CommonApp.org or coalitionforcollegeaccess.org and add Bates College to the ‘My college list’.
  • Submit all the required documents.
  • Pay an application fee of 60 USD.
  • Students who need financial support can opt for financial aid.

Admission Requirements:

  • Official secondary school transcripts sent directly from secondary school.
  • 1 recommendation from the school counselor. Recommendation forms are included in the application form.
  • 2 recommendations from teachers. 
  • Students can submit their test scores of standardized tests like SAT and ACT. This is optional. The accepted scores in these tests are:

Financial Aid

To receive financial aid at Bates College a student needs to apply for at the time of filling the application for admission form. The college offers need-based financial aid, and eligible students can receive aid up to 8 semesters in the form of a grant that does not need to be repaid. However, International students can look for externalscholarships to study in the USA.

Bates Grant

This grant is funded by the endowment earning, the annual operating budget of the college and gifts from alumni parents and friends. And this is offered only to students who demonstrate financial need. 

The requirements for the first-year applicants to receive the aid is as follows:

  • 2020-21 International Student Financial Aid Application form
  • Copy of parents most recent income tax return from your home country translated into English.
  • Statement of current annual wages, benefits, bonus, etc by your parents’ employers showcasing the taxes paid.
  • Submit the Financial Certificate form if not applying for aid( 2020-21 International Student Certification of Finances(ISCOF)

Work while you study

  • Bates College also offers international students to work while studying on-campus for up to 20 hours per week.
  • All the available on-campus jobs, off-campus jobs, and internships can be viewed at ‘Handshake’. Students can apply through their bates email.
  • International students can only apply for on-campus jobs.
