MSOE’s US News undergraduate engineering standing has held steady across recent editions. Its recognition comes from placement outcomes and industry-linked curricula rather than research output. The university does not appear in QS or THE global rankings, which weight research output heavily. Indian applicants should read the US News speciality and regional rankings as the more accurate benchmark.

Undergraduate tuition for 2026-27 sits near USD 52,627 per year. Merit scholarships can offset a significant share for qualifying first-year international students. Applicants targeting Fall 2027 should factor in F-1 visa processing time before finalising a budget. Milwaukee School of Engineering Rankings 2027

Milwaukee School of Engineering is not featured in QS, THE or US News global rankings. This absence reflects its specialist undergraduate teaching model rather than a research-university profile. As per US News Best Colleges 2026, MSOE ranks among top US Undergraduate Engineering Programs (No Doctorate). The university also features in the US News Regional Universities Midwest list.

[Source: QS, Times Higher Education, US News]

MSOE’s meaningful ranking exposure comes from US News Best Colleges national listings. Its undergraduate engineering programme in the no-doctorate category has held a consistent top-tier position across recent editions. The university has also featured in Forbes America’s Top Colleges since 2008 and holds Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accreditation for degree recognition.

Key insight: For Indian applicants, MSOE’s absence from QS or THE does not affect F-1 visa eligibility or OPT rights. US employer recognition of MSOE engineering degrees rests on its US News undergraduate engineering standing and HLC accreditation, both of which are strong.

[Source: QS World University Rankings 2027; peer university tuition schedules; MSOE placement report]

MSOE stands out on placement rate (99%) and small class size of around 20 students among these peers. Its undergraduate-focused engineering model delivers deeper industry integration than a mid-sized public research university at comparable cost.

Key insight: Peers like Rose-Hulman deliver similar teaching-first engineering education, but MSOE’s Milwaukee location connects Indian graduates to a larger Midwest industrial employer base at a lower cost of living than East Coast rivals.

Milwaukee School of Engineering suits Indian applicants who value applied engineering, small classrooms and direct US industry placement. Those who prioritise research prestige or a globally ranked brand should look elsewhere. Total investment sits around INR 45-90 lakh for a graduate degree. Median starting salary near INR 68 lakh keeps ROI competitive against larger name-brand programmes.

India-specific advantages centre on the STEM designation that unlocks multi-year OPT work authorisation after graduation through the F-1 student visa route. The international community, active engineering student chapters and dedicated RASO career centre soften the first-year transition for new arrivals. Graduates enter the US Midwest job market with employer recognition rooted in HLC accreditation and consistent US News undergraduate engineering standing.

MSOE is not the right fit for applicants who need heavy PhD-track research or a globally ranked brand. Those pursuing doctoral pipelines or post-study relocation outside the United States should look elsewhere. Applicants prioritising research reputation should compare against Illinois Institute of Technology or a similar larger research university.

Milwaukee School of Engineering FAQs

Ques. Which engineering bachelor’s programmes at Milwaukee School of Engineering are STEM-designated?

Ans. All accredited undergraduate engineering degrees at MSOE fall under DHS STEM designation. This includes software, computer, electrical, mechanical, civil, biomedical, industrial, biomolecular and architectural engineering. STEM designation lets international graduates apply for the 24-month OPT STEM extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT. Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on campus at MSOE?

Ans. F-1 international students at MSOE may work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during academic quarters. During official breaks the limit rises to 40 hours per week. Common on-campus jobs include library assistant, IT help desk, dining services and lab teaching assistant. Off-campus work requires OPT or CPT authorisation obtained through the international student office.

Ques. Does Milwaukee School of Engineering require GRE for its master’s programmes?

Ans. GRE is not a universal requirement at MSOE. Most master’s programmes in engineering waive the GRE for applicants with strong bachelor’s transcripts. The MBA does not require GMAT for admitted students meeting the academic threshold. Applicants should verify current programme-specific GRE or GMAT policy at msoe.edu before beginning test preparation to avoid unnecessary cost.

Ques. Is there an application fee for international students at MSOE?

Ans. Milwaukee School of Engineering does not charge a mandatory application fee for undergraduate or graduate international applicants. This zero-fee policy applies to the standard online application submitted through the MSOE admissions portal. Additional third-party fees apply for WES credential evaluation and English proficiency test score reporting. Budget roughly USD 200-300 for these external costs.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise Milwaukee School of Engineering?

Ans. Major Indian education loan providers including HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India Global Ed-Vantage and Prodigy Finance disburse loans to MSOE-admitted students. Loan disbursement typically requires the MSOE I-20 form and admission letter. Prodigy Finance offers no-cosigner loans for eligible MS candidates. Indian banks generally require collateral or a cosigner for higher loan amounts.

Ques. What financial documentation do Indian applicants need for the F-1 visa at MSOE?

Ans. Indian applicants must submit a bank letter on official letterhead showing sufficient funds for one year of tuition and living costs. A signed affidavit of support from the account holder is also mandatory. The estimated one-year financial requirement at MSOE sits near USD 70,000 (INR 67.1 lakh). Original documents are required at the US embassy visa interview.

Ques. Can Indian applicants get an English proficiency waiver at Milwaukee School of Engineering?

Ans. MSOE waives English proficiency tests for applicants holding a bachelor’s degree completed in English at an accredited US institution. Citizens from English-only speaking countries also qualify. Indian applicants from English-medium bachelor’s programmes may request a review, but the university typically requires TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo or PTE scores as standard. Below-threshold applicants can enter through the partner ESL bridging programme.

Ques. How does the quarter system at MSOE affect Indian student planning?

Ans. MSOE runs three 10-week academic quarters per year (Fall, Winter, Spring) plus an optional Summer term. This is faster than the two-semester system common at most US universities. Coursework moves quickly and grading windows are tighter, which suits students who prefer accelerated pace. Early planning around visa arrivals and CPT eligibility for internships becomes especially important.
