Montana State University Admission 2027
Montana State University runs a decentralised admission process where each graduate department sets its own deadlines, while undergraduate applications are handled centrally with a rolling review. The primary intake for Indian applicants is Fall (August), and Spring (January) is a smaller cycle limited to selected programmes.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 graduate priority deadline (most departments) | January 15, 2027 | Materials Science and Mathematical Sciences use this date |
| Fall 2027 Physics graduate priority deadline | January 5, 2027 | Earliest departmental cutoff at Montana State |
| Fall 2027 Computer Science graduate deadline | February 15, 2027 | Rolling review after this date if seats remain |
| Recommended international submission window | Submit 120 days before term start | Allows credential review, I-20 issuance and visa slot booking |
| Fall 2027 programme start | Late August 2027 | Orientation the week before classes |
Planning note: Indian applicants targeting a graduate teaching assistantship should submit by the departmental priority date (January 5-15, 2027), because most assistantship offers are made in the first review round and waitlisted late applicants rarely receive funding.

Montana State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Montana State University sets a university-wide minimum for academic and English-language readiness, but individual graduate departments may layer on higher thresholds and standardised test requirements.
PG applicants:
- Bachelor’s degree with 3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale in the last two years (equivalent to CGPA 6.5/10 or 65% recommended)
- English: TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5; departmental minimums may be higher
- GRE: waived by most departments; check the target programme page
- Three letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose
UG applicants:
- Class 12 with 2.5 GPA on 4.0 scale (equivalent to 55% recommended)
- English: TOEFL iBT 71 or IELTS 6.0; conditional admission available below this
Note: An Indian applicant whose bachelor’s or Class 12 was taught fully in English may request an English-test waiver, but this is granted case-by-case and requires the medium of instruction certificate from the awarding board.
Montana State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Montana State University reports an overall acceptance rate of 73% for the most recent admission cycle, down from an 82% rate the prior year. The rate is officially disclosed for undergraduate applicants; graduate acceptance varies sharply by department, with engineering and computer science running noticeably tighter.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 73% | Tightening |
| 2025 | 82% | Prior baseline |
The published rate is broad because Montana State’s admission is largely credential-based rather than holistic. An Indian applicant with a solid academic file, clean English scores and complete documentation converts admission at a rate substantially higher than the headline figure.
Reality check: The 73% university-wide rate flatters demanding graduate programmes. Indian applicants targeting MS Computer Science, MS Electrical & Computer Engineering or MS Mechanical Engineering should treat the effective admit bar as much higher, particularly if seeking assistantship funding.

[Source: derived from Montana State University international financial guarantee minimums after tuition]. Bozeman is a small mountain town where rent, food and everyday costs remain far lower than the coastal U.S. metros most Indian students target for study in USA.
Insider note: On-campus graduate apartments cost roughly USD 700-900 per month, while a shared off-campus two-bedroom in Bozeman typically runs USD 900-1,200 per bedroom; students on assistantships often move off-campus after the first semester to save on the meal plan.

Montana State University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Montana State University sits on a 1,170-acre campus in Bozeman at 4,900 feet elevation, 90 minutes from Yellowstone National Park and served by Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport with direct flights to major U.S. hubs.
- Location and transport: Bozeman is a walkable college town; the Streamline city bus is free for MSU students and connects campus, downtown and off-campus housing corridors

- Alumni network: Steve Daines (U.S. Senator), Jan Stenerud (Pro Football Hall of Fame) and Sarah Vowell (author) are notable Montana State alumni
Insider note: Indian graduates from Montana State’s MS in Computer Science in USA and MS Electrical & Computer Engineering programmes commonly land at Micron in Boise, Oracle in Denver and mid-cap software firms across the Mountain West; on-campus recruiting favours students who complete a summer internship after year one.
Montana State University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares Montana State University with three U.S. land-grant research peers of similar tuition and acceptance profile, and one QS-ranked cross-country reference.
| University | QS World 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Montana State University | Subject only | #268 of 824 | 24,863 / 21.9 lakh | Low-cost STEM masters, R1 research, assistantship-heavy funding |
| University of Wyoming | #1001-1200 | NA | Approx. 24,000 / 21.1 lakh (market) | Similar rural land-grant profile with tuition waivers |
| University of Idaho | #901-950 | NA | Approx. 26,500 / 23.3 lakh (market) | Higher QS rank; broader engineering choice |
| North Dakota State University | #1201-1400 | NA | Approx. 22,700 / 20.0 lakh (market) | Lowest peer tuition; strong agricultural sciences |
| Mississippi State University | #1001-1200 | NA | Approx. 24,500 / 21.6 lakh (market) | Larger Indian cohort; established computer engineering pipeline |
Against these peers, Montana State stands out on two axes: an R1 research classification unmatched by Wyoming or North Dakota State, and a location that Indian students who value low cost of living plus outdoor lifestyle rate ahead of the flat-plains alternatives. It trails the University of Idaho on QS visibility, which matters for applicants who prioritise QS rankings when applying for education loans.
Montana State University suits a cost-conscious Indian STEM applicant who values USD 21.9 lakh total annual outlay and can convert an assistantship offer against a median masters starting package of USD 68,000-85,000. The F-1 to STEM OPT pathway offers up to 36 months of U.S. work authorisation, which is the single strongest post-degree advantage for Indian graduates picking Montana State on visa terms.
It is not the right pick for an Indian applicant who needs top-100 QS branding for a corporate recruiting pipeline or India-return employer signalling, or who wants access to a large metro placement ecosystem. In that case, a Purdue, Arizona State or University of Texas at Dallas MS is a more realistic named alternative for MBA in USA and MS applicants alike.
Montana State University FAQs
Ques. Does Montana State University waive GRE for MS applicants?
Ans. Most Montana State University graduate departments have made the GRE optional or waived it entirely for MS admissions, including Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. A strong bachelor’s GPA, three recommendation letters and a clear statement of purpose carry the review. Applicants should still check the specific programme page, because a few science and quantitative departments recommend the GRE for assistantship consideration even where admission does not require it.
Ques. Can Montana State students work part-time on an F-1 visa?
Ans. Yes. F-1 international students at Montana State University may work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks, without additional visa authorisation. Off-campus work through Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training requires prior approval from the Office of International Programs and is normally available after the first two academic terms of full-time enrolment.
Ques. How does the graduate assistantship tuition waiver work at MSU?
Ans. Graduate teaching and research assistants at Montana State working a 19-hour appointment receive a tuition waiver covering both in-state and out-of-state tuition for up to 12 credits per semester, plus a monthly stipend set by the department. Awardees must maintain enrolment in six or more credits, meet the departmental English-speaking test for teaching roles, and stay in good academic standing to renew the assistantship each semester.
Ques. What is the application fee for Montana State University?
Ans. Montana State University charges an application fee of USD 60 for undergraduate international applicants and USD 60 for graduate international applicants, payable at the time of online submission. The fee is non-refundable and rarely waived for international applicants. Indian applicants should pay via international credit card in the application portal, because bank drafts are not accepted and delay the file entering the department review queue.
Ques. Are Indian education loans accepted for Montana State University fees?
Ans. Yes. Montana State University accepts Indian education loan disbursements from major public and private lenders including SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank, provided the loan sanction letter names MSU and matches the I-20 cost of attendance. Students typically arrange a payment schedule through the University Business Services office so the lender can wire tuition directly each semester, which also satisfies F-1 financial documentation requirements.
Ques. Does Montana State University require credential evaluation from WES?
Ans. Montana State does not universally require a WES or ECE credential evaluation for Indian applicants. The Graduate School accepts official transcripts sent directly by the awarding university, but individual departments may request a course-by-course WES evaluation for admissions review or assistantship funding. Indian applicants should confirm with the target department at least eight weeks before the deadline because a WES report itself takes seven to fifteen business days.
Ques. Can dependents join Indian students at Montana State on F-2 visas?
Ans. Yes. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of Montana State F-1 students may apply for F-2 dependent visas, which requires the primary student to demonstrate additional financial support of approximately USD 6,000 per dependent per year. F-2 dependents cannot work in the U.S. but may enrol in part-time study, and children may attend K-12 public school in Bozeman without extra authorisation.
Ques. What conditional admission options does Montana State offer for English scores?
Ans. Montana State University offers conditional undergraduate admission to Indian applicants who meet the academic requirement but score below the university minimums of TOEFL iBT 71 or IELTS 6.0. These students enrol first in the on-campus Intensive English Language Program, complete the required proficiency level, and then transition to full degree-seeking status without reapplying. Conditional admission is not routinely offered at the graduate level and is decided department by department.

Overview
Tuition costs & proximity. The tuition for in-state students is relatively at a low price. It was a no brainer to opt for an option that was less expensive than the competing schools. All while being just as established academically. The proximity to my hometown is relatively close as I enjoy going home every now and again.
Fees
I believe that the payment was around $50. Other than that the application process had no additional fees. Scholarships I have applied for were granted through dependent agencies. However, I got a $1,000 off each semester for having good grades in high school that MaU granted me, I had to do a brief scholarship entry to receive it.
