Hinged on the core values of comprehensive programming, Montana state university -Northern was founded in 1913 as Northern Montana Agricultural and Manual Training School.
Located in Havre, Montana, it is a part of the Montana State Security System that decided to realign its smaller campuses with two main Universities (Missoula and Bozeman).

Campus, Programs, and Accommodation

Campus

MSU- Northern is located on a 155 acre of land in Havre, Montana which is the only campus of the school where over 1,086 students are accommodated. The campus caters opportunities for enrolled as well as incoming freshmen students to make some new friends and get hands-on experience in the US education system

The campus maintains the quality of life on campus by providing security and safety to its student population. On-campus Housing office and health services are provided on campus, ensuring the security and safety of students. 

Some of the other notable facilities on campus include Diesel Tech. Center, Hagener Science Center, Advanced Fuels Center, etc.

Programs

Montana State University-Northern is a comprehensive institution located at the heart of Montana, offering over 50-degree awarding certificates at the undergraduate, masters, associates’ level and other professional certification. Accommodation

Living in the residence halls afford students the privilege to network and make friends with people from different cultural backgrounds, traditions, and tribes. Montana State University-Northern offers its students to choose from on and off-campus residencies. On-campus residency is mandatory to first-year students who are below 21 years of age and/or students with total semester credit hours less than 30.

On-campus housing - includes residence halls for single students (Mackenzie and Morgan which can house up to 193 and 175 students respectively) and a student family house for married students which includes one- and two-bedroom units and is equipped with all the basic amenities. Nevertheless, some unmarried students may be allowed to reside in student family housing depending on the prevailing conditions.

The application for student family housing is done through the school website accompanied by the first-month rent, a security deposit equal to one month's rent and a damage deposit of 100 USD. Those who wish to explore the life at MSU-Northern by staying at the residence hall are expected to submit the application for housing at the residence hall room on time. This application must be accompanied by a 75 USD security/damage deposit.

Students who wish to stay off-campus must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Married students
  • Single parent
  • Students registered for six or fewer credit hours
  • Students who reside with their parents
  • Students over 21 years
  • Students residing with a member of their immediate family
  • Students with specific health conditions or any other condition that may compel an exception. Nevertheless, proofs must be provided to back up claims.

Students who meet one of the above criteria are expected to complete the exemption available at the school website viathe Online Residency Exemption form and submit it with the required supporting documentation to the dean of students.

Quick fact: Mails are delivered Monday through Friday through the student union building.

Cost of Attendance

The tables below show estimates of the tuition fee, residence hall rates, dining hall rates, and student family housing rate for the 2020/2021 academic session. It is, however, pertinent to note that these fees are not the exact amount a student will pay as fees are paid based on the number of credit units offered and are subject to change. Other charges like textbooks, program & course fees, fines, and other miscellaneous expenses are not included in the tuition fee.

Students who enroll for six or more credit units are mandated to have health insurance coverage. In a situation where a student has other health insurance coverage, a waiver must be signed and the premiums will be reviewed.

Application Process

International prospective students are advised to visit the application portal via, begin the application process by selecting the resumption semester and submit the following requirements:

  • Where to Apply: International candidates seeking to get admission to the university can fill the application form from the official application portal and submit the same to MSU-Northern, P. O. Box 7751, Havre, Montana 59501 
  • Application Fee: A 30 USD non-refundable application fee must be paid during the application process and is valid for 12 months if the applicant is admitted but does not register.
  • When to Apply: Applicants are advised to apply on or before July 31st, for fall semester admission or November 1st for spring semester admission or by April 1st for summer semester admissions.
  • How to Apply: All international applicants are required to follow certain steps and submit the following to get admission in MSU Northern
    • State of Financial Support from a bank or financial institution stating the financial capacity of the parents, sponsor, or the student. This, however, is subject to verification by the school.
    • UG applicants are required to score 63 on TOEFL iBT and 475 on PBT, while graduates are required to score 500 on their PBT. Exemptions to this requirement are considered in cases where the applicant had completed the English language as a second language program, taken college courses in the United States, or completed the ESL program.
    • Official transcripts from previous college(s) or universities sent directly to the World Education Service (WES) for evaluation.
    • Physician validated immunization record showing proof of vaccination against measles, rubella, Diphtheria and other contagious diseases.

After the submission of the above requirements, the application will be reviewed by the office of international programs. If successful, a letter of acceptance and I-20 form will be issued to the student via mail. Subsequently, packages like information regarding orientation, the registration process, and other important information will be sent to the applicant.

Financial Aid and Scholarship

After a successful application, the award letter will be sent to the applicant containing vital information like the estimated cost of education, estimated family/student’s contribution, and estimated financial aid eligibility.

The estimated financial aid eligibility determines the type and amount of financial aid that an applicant is eligible for. Aids are offered in the form of grants, scholarships, waivers, loans, and employment opportunities. All financial aid eligible students are expected to apply for financial aid every year as most of the aids are awarded yearly. The two categories of aids in MSU-Northern are:

  • New to MSU-Northern students eligible only to first-time freshmen and transfer students
  • Continuing MSU-Northern students.

Work While Studying

Students of MSU-Northern who have completed their registration process and enrolled for at least 6 credit units are eligible for employment while studying. Students who fulfill the above criteria can visit the Career Center in the school premises to secure a vacant employment position.

The two types of employment in MSU-Northern are the work-study program and part-time employment which can be carried out on-campus or off-campus depending on the terms and conditions of the work. Prospective students are encouraged to intimate themselves with the similarities and differences in these two categories by referring to the student’s handbook which can be downloaded from the university’s official website. 

The rules and regulations governing work while studying program are:

  1. Students are not permitted to occupy more than one employment position due to the limited slots and the increasing number of eligible students.
  2. Students may not work more than 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semester except in cooperative education and stipend positions.
  3. A student may work up to 40 hours per week during the summer semester.
  4. Students employment welfare are covered under workers' compensation but are not entitled to benefits such as retirement contributions, vacation pay, sick leave pay, health insurance, etc.
  5. Students’ wages must be consistent with the guidelines and policies of the school.

Life at MSU-Northern doesn't just end after graduation as graduates stay knitted together under the alumni umbrella. With a mission to engage alumni and friends of the university, enrich students' experiences and provide ethical stewardship while supporting the university's strategic goals, members of the alumni network host reunion events, tailgates and other activities aimed at maintaining the bonds. Recently, the class of 1969 celebrated its golden anniversary marking 50 years since they left the institution.

Ques. Is the security/damage deposit refundable?

Ans. The 75 USD security/damage deposit is refunded upon written request for cancellation of the room. The conditions are as follows-

Ques. What sort of job is available in the work-study program?

Ans. MSU-Northern provides different on-campus jobs to choose from- office positions, lab assistants, physical plant, tutoring, and food services being the most popular ones.

Ques. How to know if I have been awarded a scholarship?

Ans. The scholarship or any sort of financial aid(s) will be credited directly to the student expenses. Students have the option of declining this automatic crediting of charges by writing to the Financial Aid Office at any time before the payment is made for the following application term.

Ques. Whether disability-based housing available? 

Ans. The university provides disability-based housing, eliminating any discrimination and allowing students with disabilities seeking accommodation at the university. Interested candidates may contact the University’s Disability Services Office. 

Ques. How do I apply for health insurance?

Ans. Students without health insurance can avail the same for the following costs: 

  • 2,337.50 USD for fall semester admissions with a coverage period of August 1st, 2019 to January 31st, 2020
