Admissions at Yale University are famous for their extremely competitive and selective process. With an acceptance rate of just 6.2%, Yale is considered among the most coveted top universities of the US, as well as around the globe.

Yale University International Admissions

Yale has been welcoming international students to its programs as early as the 1800s. About 22% of Yale's students come from abroad. Today, it has students coming from 121 countries and has an current international enrollment of 2,841 students.

International applicants must apply directly to the school or programs which offer their degree of interest. Each program has its own procedure for admission and financial help. General admission requirements are however, same:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Application fee or the application fee waiver

  • Recommendations (as specified by the program)
  • Supplements, only if required or mentioned by the program

English Language Requirements

International students must demonstrate English language proficiency by providing scores of any one of the following tests given below to be eligible for admissions:

If Graduate students are unable to score beyond 21 - 23 in TOEFL (iBT), they are recommended to take the following Pathway Programs:

  • OPA2- during the Spring Season, also begins in the second year

Visa Requirements

If accepted, international applicants will need to obtain an F-1 or J-1 visa to study at Yale University. Students must consult the OISS (Office of International Students & Scholars) to prepare well for their immigration-related procedure and queries. Applying for a visa requires:

  • An I-20 or DS-2019 form 
    • This form will be mailed to the student after they have been admitted
    • The form includes SEVIS ID number which is required later
  • Payment of the SEVIS Fee receipt 
    • Must be paid before applying for the visa 
    • Must be printed out as it is to be submitted as a part of your visa application
  • Complete the form DS-160 for applying for the U.S. visa
  • Schedule an appointment for a Visa interview 
    • Make sure you have the following documents 
      • Form I-20 
      • SEVIS fee receipt 
      • Copy of your financial support documents or scholarship award letter 
      • A valid passport 
      • Completed visa application forms 
      • Photographs

Yale University Undergraduate Admission Requirements

With around 95 majors, Yale offers various undergraduate programs. The international students can apply through any one of the two application portals for Yale. 

How to apply: Apply through either:

  • Common Application : Students applying through Common App have to submit Yale specific questions. It’s easy for counsellors or teachers to fill LOR’s since they are familiar with the Common App. 
  • Coalition Application : If students apply through Coalition App, they might benefit from the resources offered to complete college applications. Also the unique digital locker helps them to collect those materials that are required for completing an application. 

Academic Requirements for International Students: Students are required to submit either ACT or SAT score along with the application. These scores are valid for a period of 5 years only. Yale University Transcript Evaluation and Offer Acceptance

Students submitting scanned copies of transcripts must ensure to submit an official evaluation from an authorized person/company/institution. Yale University accepts evaluated transcripts either from NACES or AICE agency.

Other requirements that applicants must keep in mind while applying for visa are:

  • The cost of getting documents evaluated ranges from USD 85 to 140 USD, depending upon the duration of need of documents.
  • All documents that would be submitted by international students must be in English. If they are not in English, authentic translated copies of the documents should be uploaded or submitted from a qualified translator.
  • Students applying for Graduate courses must upload official financial statements before applying for a visa.
  • Students are notified of their admission status on Yale Admissions Status Portal, around March end.
  • Only after the offer is accepted on or before May 1 (for UG), can international students apply for a US visa. The OISS usually issues immigration visa (I-20) within two weeks.
  • After receiving the I-20 visa, international applicants can pay the SEVIS Fee of USD 350 for obtaining their F-1 visa.
