Yale offers admission to students from over 117 countries every year. The total number of applications received in 2017-18 were 32,879, out of which only 69% of applications were selected. The number of female applicants have gone up to 5% in 2017-18 as compared to 2016-17. The acceptance rate at Yale was recorded to be an all-time low of 6.3%, and only 10% of international students could get admissions.

Most courses at Yale University begin during the Fall season while there are exceptions and applications are accepted in the Summer season as well.

  • Applications must be submitted two weeks before the deadline. Begin your preparation a year before applying.
  • UG International Students: can apply through the Common Application or Coalition Application.
  • International PG and Research Students: can apply directly through the respective schools.
  • Common or Coalition Application have similar deadlines, that is, November 1, 2019.
  • Admission Decision is usually made by the first week of May.
  • After offer acceptance, apply for a US study visa and pay the SEVIS fee of 200 USD within two weeks.

Yale University Language Requirements

International students must demonstrate English language proficiency by providing scores of any one of the following tests given below to be eligible for admissions:

If Graduate students are unable to score beyond 21 - 23 in TOEFL (iBT), they are recommended to take the following Pathway Programs:

Yale University Undergraduate Admission Requirements

With around 95 majors at the undergraduate level, the international students can apply through any one of the 2 portals at Yale.

How to apply: Apply through either:

  • Common Application : Students applying through Common App have to submit Yale specific questions. It’s easy for counsellors or teachers to fill LOR’s since they are familiar with the Common App.
  • Coalition Application : If students apply through Coalition App, they might benefit from the resources offered, to complete college applications. Also the unique digital locker helps them to collect those materials that are required for completing an application.

Academic Requirements for International Students: Students are required to submit either ACT or SAT score along with the application. These scores are valid for a period of 5 years only. Scores will not be accepted, if tests are taken after high school. The following table shows the average scores:

Yale University Graduate Admission Requirements

At Yale there are 13 graduate schools that offer more than 2000 courses. Each course at Yale has a different requirement, application process and the fee structure also differs in some cases.

How to apply: There are different portals for desired course. The applications are filed through their respective school’s website.

When to apply: Deadlines vary with each course and school. Students are admitted in the Fall season only. The applications are accepted a year before course commencement.

Academic Requirements for International Students:GRE/GMAT/MCAT (valid for 5 years) and English language test scores like TOEFL/IELTS, etc. are required.

Supporting Documents: Degrees, transcripts, grading/evaluation system, referee reports, SOP or objectives, etc. are basic requirements for each course.

Academic Requirements for International Students:GMAT/GRE are required, while TOEFL/IELTS are not required

Supporting Documents: 2 professional recommendations and briefly answered video questions.

  • It is also recommended to have a full time work experience.
  • There is also an interview to assess the applicant’s ability, which is also a deciding factor for admission to Yale.
  • The students must not wait for Round 2 or 3, they must try and apply by Round 1.

MS in Medicine and Public Health

Applications can be filed depending upon the course:

Academic Requirements for International Students: MCAT, GRE/GMAT If TOEFL (score- 100) is submitted, then applicants may be asked to complete briefly some video questions, in the application.

Supporting Documents: A complete SOPHAS Application, 3 LORs, resume/CV and SOP/objectives which must include areas of interest, experiences in the relevant field and public health story.

MS in Environment and Forestry

Yale University Transfer Students Admission

Yale offers admissions to a meagre number of international transfer students. The students must ensure that the duration of study is not less than 2 years. Transfer students pay for certain credits of study only and are also not offered on-campus accommodation.

How to apply: Students can apply through the Common Application Transfer Application.

Yale University Summer Programs Admission

The programs offered in Summer Sessions for students, help them in honing their skills in the desired subject or field. These programs are offered either on-campus or online, and are of short duration.

Yale University Transcript Evaluation and Offer Acceptance

Students submitting scanned copies of transcripts must ensure their official evaluation from an authorized person/company/institution. Yale University accepts evaluated transcripts either from NACES or AICE agency.

The students must also keep a track of the deadline to submit additional documents. In order to get information regarding the appropriate degree required for obtaining admission at Yale, the students can contact an OISS Advisor.

Other requirements that applicants must keep in mind while applying for visa are:

  • The cost of getting documents evaluated ranges from USD 85 to 140 USD, depending upon the duration of need of documents.
  • All documents that would be submitted by international students must be in English. If they are not in English, authentic translated copies of the documents should be uploaded or submitted from a qualified translator.
  • Students applying for Graduate courses must upload official financial statements before applying for visa.
  • Students are notified of their admission status on Yale Admissions Status Portal, around March 28, 2019.
  • Only after the offer is accepted on or before May 1, 2019 (for UG), can international students apply for a US visa. The OISS usually issues immigration visa (I-20) within 2 weeks.
  • After receiving the I-20 visa, international applicants can pay the SEVIS Fee of USD 200 for obtaining an F-1 visa.
