Popular Indian-student picks at Hunter College include the MS in Computer Science, the MSW at the Silberman School, and the MPH housed at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health, with Reddit threads and CUNY forums praising the Manhattan location, the price-to-value ratio versus private US schools, and the strong internship pipeline into New York-based employers.

Hunter College Application Deadlines for Indian Students
Hunter College operates on a two-intake cycle governed by CUNY’s central admissions calendar, per the Hunter admissions page. Fall (August) is the primary intake where nearly every undergraduate and graduate program opens, while Spring (January) offers a narrower set of programs and is closed for competitive majors like Nursing.
Hunter’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August) — most programs open here.

Planning note: Graduate deadlines vary sharply by department. The MSW at Silberman closes 15 January 2027 for Fall priority review, while the MPH accepts applications until 1 April 2027.
Hunter College Eligibility for Indian Students
Hunter College reviews Indian applicants holistically, but sets clear academic floors below which files are rarely reviewed. The requirements sit slightly above CUNY community-college norms because Hunter is a senior four-year college with tighter selectivity than the system average.
- UG general entry: Class XII at 75 percent or better from CBSE, ICSE, or a recognised State board.
- UG competitive majors (Nursing, Media): Class XII at 85 percent plus prerequisite subjects.
- PG general entry: Bachelor’s degree with GPA of 3.0 (around 65 to 70 percent Indian equivalent).
- PG selective (MSW, MPH): Bachelor’s with GPA 3.3 (around 75 percent) plus relevant coursework.
English proficiency is required for every applicant whose secondary education was not in English. Hunter accepts the following tests:
| Test | UG Minimum | PG Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 | 7.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 80 | 90 |
| PTE Academic | 55 | 60 |
| Duolingo English Test | 110 | 120 |
Hunter College IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Indian applicants may be exempted from IELTS or TOEFL if their secondary school issues a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter confirming English-medium instruction across Classes IX to XII. CBSE and ICSE candidates typically qualify by default, but the MOI letter must be on school letterhead, signed by the principal, and uploaded with the application. A Bachelor’s degree completed entirely in English at a UGC-recognised Indian university also waives the requirement at graduate level.

The section intro lists base tuition of around USD 15,510 (around INR 14.66 Lakhs) per year for non-resident graduate students; per-program tuition is set by credit load and department, so see the detailed course-wise fees breakdown for exact figures.

Hunter College PhD and Doctoral Admissions
Hunter itself does not award most PhDs directly — CUNY doctoral degrees are conferred by the CUNY Graduate Center, though Hunter faculty supervise students in Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Physics, Nursing, and Social Welfare. Hunter runs its own DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) and DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) programs on the Brookdale campus. Fall entry closes 1 December 2026 for the DPT; the DNP deadline is 1 March 2027 for Fall 2027. Doctoral candidates admitted via the Graduate Center receive a five-year funding package covering tuition plus a stipend of around USD 29,300 (around INR 27.68 Lakhs) per year for 2026 to 2027, plus health insurance.
Hunter Doctoral Application Timeline
The application uses the CUNY Graduate Center portal, opens 1 September 2026, and reviews are department-controlled — plan a research statement, three academic LORs, and a writing sample well before the December window.
Insider note: Reach out to prospective Hunter faculty advisors by October 2026 for Fall 2027 doctoral entry — most PhD offers hinge on a supervisor confirming fit before the formal review begins.
Hunter College Application Process Step by Step
The path splits by level: freshman UG applicants use the Common App, transfer UG applicants use the CUNY Application, and graduate applicants use the CUNY Graduate Admissions portal.
- Create an account on the Common Application (UG freshman) — the platform opened on 1 August 2026 for the Fall 2027 cycle. Transfer and graduate applicants use CUNY portals instead.
- Add Hunter College to your college list on the Common App or select Hunter as your first-choice campus on the CUNY Application.
- Complete the Common App essay (650 words) or the CUNY personal statement (500 words).
- Upload Class XII marksheet (UG) or Bachelor’s transcripts (PG), passport bio page, financial affidavit, and English test score report.
- Request academic LORs — one for UG freshman, two to three for PG.
- Pay the application fee of USD 65 (around INR 6,143) for UG or USD 125 (around INR 11,813) for PG on the Common App or CUNY portal.
- Submit and monitor the CUNYfirst applicant portal for decision updates.
Hunter Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline
Hunter reviews on a rolling basis after each deadline. Undergraduate freshman decisions land between mid-March and mid-May for the Fall intake, and applicants have until 1 May 2027 to accept a Fall 2027 offer. Graduate decisions are department-controlled and typically arrive 6 to 10 weeks after a completed file.
- Fall UG decision window: 15 March to 15 May 2027.
- Fall PG decision window: 6 to 10 weeks after deadline.
- Deposit deadline: 1 May 2027 (UG); PG per program.
- Deferral: Available for one semester on written request with reason.
Hunter College Documents Required
Every Indian applicant assembles a paperwork bundle before pressing submit. Missing files are the most common reason a Hunter application stalls, so prepare digital scans in colour PDF.
- Passport bio page valid for at least 6 months beyond the intake start.
- Class X and Class XII marksheets and pass certificates (UG).
- Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (PG).
- WES or ECE course-by-course credential evaluation.
- Statement of Purpose or personal statement (500 to 650 words).
- Two to three Letters of Recommendation from academic referees.
- Updated CV or resume (PG only).
- Official English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or DET).
- Financial affidavit showing coverage of one year’s tuition plus living costs.
- Bank statement no older than 6 months.
- Photograph in US visa format.
Hunter College Acceptance Rate
Hunter’s overall acceptance rate sits at around 36 percent, making it the most selective senior college in the CUNY system after Baruch. Selectivity varies sharply by program: Nursing runs closer to 15 percent, while entry to a general BA in the Arts and Sciences is meaningfully easier.
Why Hunter’s Acceptance Rate is Competitive
The Manhattan location, sub-USD 25,000 tuition, and the pathway into CUNY Graduate Center doctoral programs pull applications from a global pool, per Hunter’s ranking band.
Hunter Selectivity by Program
The Roosevelt House Public Policy program, Nursing, and the Macaulay Honors track are the tightest. General liberal arts majors accept at rates closer to 45 percent.
Insider note: A strong personal statement matters more here than test scores. Hunter is test-optional for UG freshman entry through Fall 2027, so essays and LORs carry decisive weight.
USA Student Visa Process for Hunter Applicants
Once Hunter issues an I-20, Indian applicants apply for the F-1 student visa. Pay the SEVIS fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,075), complete the DS-160 form, book a biometric appointment at a VFS centre, and schedule the consular interview at the US Embassy in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata. Carry the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS payment receipt, financial documents showing coverage of first-year expenses, and academic records to the interview.
2026 update: After graduation, Hunter students on F-1 status qualify for 12 months of OPT, extended to 36 months total for STEM designated majors including Computer Science, Statistics, and several Biology tracks — a decisive edge for Indian applicants planning US work experience.
Tips and Application Checklist for Hunter College
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Hunter College and CUNY forums.
- Start WES evaluation early: Order Class XII or Bachelor’s WES 10 to 12 weeks before deadline; Indian board turnaround runs 4 to 8 weeks alone.
- Request MOI letter: A signed MOI from your Indian school waives IELTS at UG level — collect it in October 2026 for a February 2027 deadline.
- Book IELTS by November 2026: Score reporting to Hunter takes 5 to 7 business days after test date.
- Draft the Common App essay in December 2026: Two full revisions before submission produce noticeably stronger files.
- Line up recommenders by October 2026: Give academic referees at least 6 weeks and a reminder 10 days before the 1 February 2027 close.
- File financial affidavit in January 2027: Hunter requires proof of USD 42,000 (around INR 39.69 Lakhs) covering tuition and living costs for the I-20.
- Book F-1 visa slot by April 2027: Chennai and Mumbai fill fastest; open the visa portal the day slots refresh.
Hunter College’s Fall 2027 cycle is live, freshman applications close on 1 February 2027, and Indian applicants with a Class XII score above 75 percent, IELTS 6.5, and a strong Common App essay are well-placed. Move on WES and the MOI letter now.

Overview
I applied to hunter college when I was a senior in high school because it had a good reputation for a CUNY school. CUNY schools in NYC are located in the city and cheaper than your traditional private college and it was the main reason I applied. the admission process was easy. I also applied to 4 other CUNY schools because you could apply to them under the same application with no additional application fee. I also applied to private schools and SUNY. I was accepted to 11/12 schools; denied for Columbia and waitlisted for NYU. when I applied I had a 1480 SAT 31 ACT and 93 GPA.
Overview
This college had the least amount of yearly tuition and is known for having a good pre-med program. I also wanted to go to a school that was within close proximity to where I live. I did not want to travel too far and the commute to this school is just right.
Scholarship
When I got into the school they offered me a position as a science research scholars. I had to fill out a form except that I agree with the terms of the scholarship and then I will maintain the necessary grade point average.
Overview
Good English programs as well as teaching programs which I was at a time considering pursuing and it offered affordable tuition that my financial aid covered. It was an easily accessible and beautiful location in the city.
Scholarship
Yes, I filled out the FAFSA to receive financial aid and have also received both need-based and merit-based scholarships through both the school directly and CUNY.
