The University of Southern Maine (USM) has an undergraduate acceptance rate of 85% which makes USM admissions moderately easy. With nearly 8140 students enrolled at the university, it offers over seventy undergraduate and graduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering and technology, health and social services, education, business, and more

For the Fall session 2018, USM received a total of 4524 applicants out of which 3845 (roughly 80%) candidates were offered admission, and only 26% (approx. 1000) enrolled.

University of Southern Maine Admission Deadlines

Admission in US universities is a complex process, so applicants are advised to apply before the mentioned deadlines

*University also offers admission on a rolling admission cycle. The application deadline for students who want to enroll in the fall semester is August 15.

For 2020 fall semester, USM will be offering a new “Early Action” option.

Applicants (incl. International) who apply for early action and submit their undergraduate admission application by November 15 and all supporting documents by December 1 will be guaranteed an admission decision by January 15. University offers flexibility to candidates as candidates can choose whether to enroll or not by May 1.

University of Southern Maine International Student Admissions

The process of admission for International applicants is the same as for United States applicants except for some language-related score documents.

Admission Requirements for International Students

  • All official transcripts from all previously attended Institutions whether credits were earned or not and exam certificates which should be translated in English.
  • Transcripts should be evaluated from a USV-approved evaluation agency {National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES)
  • Completed personal essay/statement is recommended but not mandatory
  • Proof of sufficient funds called Declaration of Finances form which should be accompanied or attached by the appropriate Financial information.
  • Official ACT/SAT scores (Optional)
  • English Proficiency scores (TOEFL/IELTS)
  • Some departments or courses may have their own requirements so before applying, kindly check the respective course requirements

Admission Requirements for Transfer Students (additional to above-mentioned requirements only)

  • Official final high school transcript which must certify the date of high school graduation. It is not required if the applicant has completed an associate's or bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution at the time the application is submitted.
  • Resume: only recommended If the applicant has had a significant gap of three or more years since their last experience in education. Again it's not mandatory

Visa Process for International Students

  • All the International applicants will be issued Form I-20 from the respective university upon completion of the application.
  • After completion of the I-20 form, applicants have to pay the SEVIS fee which is 200$ for F-1 or 180$ for J-1 depends on the nature of visa.
  • After submission of I-20, the applicant have to visit the US embassy and schedule the visa interview with them.
  • Also, upon a visit to US embassy applicant have to provide the mentioned documents
    • Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019 form)
    • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the applicant’s period of stay in the United States.
    • Online Nonimmigrant Visa Electronic Application Form, DS-160. NOTE: This form is completed and submitted online. Add your electronic signature or the form may be rejected.
    • Now that the Application (DS-160) is being submitted online applicants must also submit digital photos along with their application. Please be sure to carefully review photograph requirements. NEW: Glasses are no longer allowed in visa photographs.
    • Receipt for visa processing fee (SEVIS fee) known as I-901 - currently $200 for F-1 visas and $180 for J-1 visas
    • Receipt for payment of the Visa Application Fee (this fee is typical $160 but may vary from country to country, so be sure to visit the embassy or consulate website where you will be applying.)
    • Proof of admission to the U.S. university
    • Evidence of ties to your home country
    • Proof of sufficient financial support
    • Evidence of sufficient knowledge of English during the interview
    • Evidence of academic credentials qualifying you for admission (such as TOEFL, transcripts, etc.)

University of Southern Maine Undergraduate Admissions 

USM offers more than 54 major & 90 minor undergraduate courses to all the applicants. Courses category like Business and Engineering is most popular among candidates. Admission process for all undergraduate courses is similar for all applicants except English proficiency requirements.
