University of Nevada, Reno Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
UNR admission requirements for Indian applicants centre on a bachelor’s degree in a related field plus an approved English test score. Indian equivalencies below reflect UNR’s international admissions norms.
PG Requirements at University of Nevada, Reno
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 in a related discipline (recommended); consolidated marksheets from the degree-granting institution accepted per UNR.
- English test: TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 band scale) / 79 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5 (academic), PTE 59, Duolingo 115, or Cambridge English 176 as per the UNR Graduate School.
- Credential verification: WES or UNR-approved credential evaluation for degrees from Indian universities; provisional certificate accepted where the final degree has not yet been issued.
- Standardised tests: GRE and GMAT waivers common at programme level; the MBA still recommends GMAT for competitive Indian applicants.
UG Requirements at University of Nevada, Reno
- Academic: Class 12 with 70% to 85% (recommended) from CBSE, ISC or a state board.
- English test: TOEFL iBT 61 or IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 95 for undergraduate applicants.
Key insight: UNR rejects marksheets from affiliated colleges outright and only accepts documents from the degree-granting university. Indian applicants from affiliated engineering colleges should request the parent university seal early, since delays here are the single most common reason Indian applications stall. See reviews from current students for on-ground experience.
University of Nevada, Reno Acceptance Rate 2027
The University of Nevada, Reno acceptance rate stands at 86% as per US News Best Colleges 2026, placing it among the more accessible R1 research universities in the US. The figure is disclosed at institutional level and covers first-year undergraduate admissions; postgraduate rates vary by programme and are typically lower.
Reality check: The 86% institutional rate does not mean any Indian applicant walks in. Competitive Indian graduate programmes such as MS Computer Science and MS Data Science hold effective admit rates in the 40% to 55% range, and funded assistantship seats are the true bottleneck.

University of Nevada, Reno Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The University of Nevada, Reno campus spans 290 acres in the northwest of the city, roughly 40 minutes from Lake Tahoe and 4 hours from the San Francisco Bay Area by road.
- Location and transit: Main campus sits on North Virginia Street; free campus shuttle and the RTC city bus connect to downtown Reno within 15 minutes.
- Housing: On-campus graduate housing available in Ponderosa Village and Argenta Hall; the university does not guarantee international student housing beyond the first year.
- Research facilities: 60-plus research centres including the Nevada Seismological Laboratory and the Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, one of the oldest mining schools in the US.
- Indian community: About 46 Indian students enrolled per the UNR Office of International Students and Scholars; the Indian Student Association hosts Diwali and Holi celebrations each year.
What Indian students say: Reno offers a lower cost of living than California with weekend access to Tahoe skiing. Winters are cold and dry, and Indian grocery options are limited to a handful of stores, so most students plan grocery runs to Sacramento or online.

UNR stands out on two counts: it is the cheapest non-resident graduate tuition in this peer set, and it is the only university in the group with a top-100 US News grad Earth Sciences ranking (#59) plus the Mackay School heritage in mining and metallurgy.
The University of Nevada, Reno also runs a stronger assistantship funding rate for international graduate students than most peers in the western US, per the UNR Office of International Students and Scholars.
The University of Nevada, Reno fits Indian applicants who want a funded MS in mining, civil, environmental, or computer engineering at the lowest non-resident tuition in the western US, plus STEM OPT eligibility that supports a 3-year US work runway. Total 2-year investment lands near INR 33 lakh in tuition alone, against a market median MS starting salary of USD 75,000 (INR 65.63 lakh), leaving room to study at UNR on Indian education loan terms that recover quickly.
It is not the right fit for Indian applicants targeting a top-100 QS brand for finance, consulting, or product management recruiting at Ivy-tier levels. Applicants with that goal should consider Arizona State University, which sits in a higher QS band with broader Indian recruiter penetration but at USD 30,000+ tuition.

Overview
In my hometown, I got brochures and info from high school. Online application to fill out. There was a $60 application fee for prospective students too. It can take 3-6 weeks for a denial/acceptance letter. I applied to 2 colleges including the current one. They were both in my home town, one university and one community. Chose because it's Close to home.
Fees
Instate can be about $5000 or less. Out-state can go up to $15000 (might be including or excluding room and board.) loans are available depending on one's FAFSA form for the school year. Financial aid is reviewed on an individual basis and aid is determined by that. Pell grant, millennium (instate scholarship) are both common ones and depends on the number of credits a student is taking. 12 credits equal full-time status.
Overview
I'm from the state and was admitted as soon as I applied because of my high school diploma and GPA. Also, they had a music program I could get into. I'm able to pay in state tuition which vastly changes the cost of college!
Fees
There are construction fees, gym fees, fine fees, tech fees, online learning fees if taking online courses, student health fees, and lab fees. Some are per credit while others are a flat charge.
Overview
I had scholarships if I stayed in state. After moving from CA to NV I had to readjust my whole life plan. I only wanted to go to a 4-year university, and between the University of Nevada Reno and the University of NV Las Vegas, I wanted to experience real weather.
Fees
Our website has a great breakdown of fees and tuition. There are however a lot of small charges that add up.
