University of Texas at San Antonio Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

UTSA admission requirements for Indian applicants centre on academic transcripts, English proficiency, and F-1 visa financial documentation.

  • Bachelor’s degree: Four-year bachelor’s from a recognised Indian university with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); individual programmes may set higher cut-offs.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) / 79 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 58, or Duolingo English Test 100 for graduate applicants.
  • Credential evaluation: Foreign transcript evaluation by a NACES-approved agency such as WES is mandatory for all Indian applicants.
  • GRE / GMAT: Optional at university level; individual programmes such as MBA and select MS programmes may require or recommend scores.

Key insight: UTSA accepts the TOEFL iBT on both the new 1-6 band scale (mandatory from 21 January 2026) and the legacy 0-120 scale for reports issued through 2028, so Indian applicants with an older TOEFL score valid within two years remain eligible.

University of Texas at San Antonio Acceptance Rate 2027

The UTSA acceptance rate is 88.5% (estimated), placing the university in the least-selective band among four-year US publics. UTSA does not publish an official international-specific acceptance rate, so the figure reflects the overall admission rate reported by third-party aggregators.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202688.5% (estimated)Stable
202587% (estimated)Slight rise

The high headline rate does not mean automatic admission: individual graduate programmes at UTSA, particularly Computer Science, Data Analytics and MBA, apply their own competitive review of GPA, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation and work experience. Indian applicants clearing the recommended 55% bachelor’s threshold and English test minimums have realistic odds if their programme fit is strong.

Reality check: Indian applicants should treat UTSA as a target school rather than a safety, because programme-level admits in high-demand tracks like MS Computer Science can be materially tighter than the university-wide 88% headline.

University of Texas at San Antonio Campus, Facilities and Student Life

UTSA operates five campuses across San Antonio, with the Main Campus in the northwest 1604 Loop area serving as the core residential and academic hub.

  • Location and transport: Main Campus sits 25 minutes from downtown San Antonio; the UTSA Runner shuttle links all five campuses at no cost to enrolled students.
  • Housing: On-campus housing is not guaranteed for international students; UTSA advises early application for Chisholm Hall, Alvarez Hall and Guadalupe Hall residences.
  • Research and facilities: The National Security Collaboration Center, the San Pedro I downtown building housing AI, Cyber and Computing, and the Roadrunner Athletics Center anchor UTSA’s research and student-life spend.
  • Indian community: The Indian Student Association (ISA) at UTSA organises Diwali, Holi and cultural events; the wider international student body of 927 supports airport pickup and orientation.

What Indian students say: San Antonio living costs stay well below Austin, Dallas or Houston, off-campus apartments within 15 minutes of Main Campus are widely available under USD 750 per person, and the CS and Data Analytics faculty support paid research assistantships from the first semester.

UTSA also holds Times Higher Education subject placements including Computer Science 251-300, Engineering 301-400, Education Studies 301-400, and Social Sciences 501-600, all relevant to Indian applicant demand.

Key insight: UTSA’s US News Best Global position at #296 clears the threshold used by most Indian education-loan lenders and by employers screening the "top-500 world universities" filter, which materially strengthens the ROI case versus lower-ranked US publics.

University of Texas at San Antonio Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

UTSA operates a centralised University Career Center that supports both undergraduate and graduate outcomes across nine colleges, with STEM-designated master’s programmes qualifying for 36 months of OPT work authorisation.

  • Median starting salary: USD 60,000 to 75,000 (INR 57.41 to 71.76 lakh) for MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics graduates in the US labour market (market median).
  • MBA median: USD 75,000 to 90,000 (INR 71.76 to 86.11 lakh) post-MBA salary at UTSA Alvarez College of Business (market median).
  • Representative recruiters: USAA, Rackspace, H-E-B, Valero Energy, Boeing and Southwest Research Institute are anchor San Antonio recruiters for UTSA graduates.
  • Post-study work: STEM-designated master’s programmes qualify for 12 months of OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, totalling 36 months of US work authorisation.
  • Careers support: The University Career Center runs employer days, resume clinics and industry meet-ups across engineering, business and cybersecurity tracks.

Insider note: San Antonio’s concentration in cybersecurity, defence contracting and financial services (USAA is headquartered locally) is what drives disproportionate placement traction for UTSA MS Cybersecurity Science and MS Computer Science graduates versus similarly-ranked US publics.

University of Texas at San Antonio vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers Texas publics of similar research profile plus one out-of-state comparator, benchmarked on QS 2027, Collegedunia Study Abroad and average annual PG fee.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study AbroadAvg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh)Differentiator
University of Texas at San Antonio#1001-1200#411 of 824USD 28,988 / 27.73 lakhStrong cybersecurity and AI focus, low San Antonio cost of living

University of Houston#651-660NAUSD 26,500 / 25.35 lakh (market median)Higher research volume, energy-sector recruiter access

UTSA’s edge is the pairing of a mid-band US public tuition with the US News #296 global position, plus a San Antonio location where monthly living costs run 20% below Dallas or Houston. For Indian applicants targeting STEM-designated master’s programmes with predictable post-study work eligibility, that combination is the case for UTSA over similarly-ranked Texas peers.

UTSA is the right fit for a mid-range Indian applicant with a 55% to 65% bachelor’s, an IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79, and a two-year budget of INR 90 lakh to 105 lakh who wants a STEM-designated master’s in Computer Science, Cybersecurity or Business Analytics, delivered by a US News top-300 institution with clear study in USA visa and OPT pathways.

UTSA is not the right fit for applicants targeting a top-100 QS World brand for consulting or investment-banking recruiting, or applicants without the USD 47,000-plus annual budget for a self-funded first year; in those cases, Arizona State University or the University of Texas at Arlington offer stronger recruiter reach or lower fee bands respectively.

University of Texas at San Antonio FAQs

Ques. Does UTSA waive the GRE for MS Computer Science applicants?

Ans. UTSA does not require the GRE at the university level for graduate admission, and the MS Computer Science programme currently treats the GRE as optional for Indian applicants. Individual programmes such as some MS Engineering tracks and the MBA may still recommend GRE or GMAT to strengthen a competitive file, so Indian applicants should check the specific programme page before deciding to skip the test.

Ques. What is the UTSA application fee for Indian applicants?

Ans. The graduate application fee for international applicants including Indian students is USD 90 (INR 8,611), payable at the point of submission. Undergraduate international applicants pay a separate application fee published on the UTSA freshman admissions page. UTSA does not routinely publish an application-fee waiver for Indian applicants, though McNair scholars and specific partnership programmes may qualify for a waiver on request.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UTSA?

Ans. Indian F-1 visa students at UTSA can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic term and 40 hours per week during official university breaks. On-campus roles include library assistant, IT support, dining services and graduate teaching or research assistantships. Off-campus work is only allowed after the first academic year through Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training tied to the field of study.

Ques. How long is OPT after a UTSA STEM master’s degree?

Ans. Graduates of STEM-designated master’s programmes at UTSA including MS Computer Science, MS Data Analytics, MS Cybersecurity Science and MS Business Analytics qualify for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, totalling 36 months of US work authorisation. Non-STEM master’s graduates qualify for the standard 12-month OPT window with no extension eligibility.

Ques. Which Indian banks fund education loans for the University of Texas at San Antonio?

Ans. UTSA’s US News #296 global position clears the eligible-university filter used by SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Bank of Baroda for unsecured and secured Indian education loans up to INR 1.5 crore. Non-banking lenders including Prodigy Finance, MPOWER Financing and Avanse also lend against UTSA admits, typically at higher interest rates but without the co-signer or collateral requirement of Indian banks.

Ques. What documents do Indian applicants need for the F-1 visa proof of funds?

Ans. Indian F-1 applicants for UTSA must submit a financial statement covering full first-year cost of attendance, currently USD 47,700 to 50,600 (INR 45.64 to 48.41 lakh) for graduate students. Acceptable documents include bank-endorsed statements from a parent or guardian, an approved education-loan sanction letter, or a combination of the two. UTSA issues the I-20 only after the financial statement is verified.

Ques. Is IELTS accepted at UTSA for Indian graduate applicants?

Ans. Yes, UTSA accepts IELTS Academic with a minimum overall band of 6.5 for graduate international admission. Indian applicants may alternatively submit TOEFL iBT 4.0 on the new 1-6 scale (or 79 on the legacy 0-120 scale), Duolingo English Test 100, or PTE Academic 58. English test scores must be less than two years old on the date the application is submitted.

Ques. How does the University of Texas at San Antonio handle credential evaluation for Indian degrees?

Ans. UTSA requires all Indian applicants with coursework outside the United States to submit a course-by-course foreign credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency such as World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE). Indian applicants should start this process 8 to 10 weeks before the target application deadline because WES verification of Indian university transcripts often takes 4 to 6 weeks alone.

  • UTSA has got 2 different campuses; facilities are absolutely great. Lots of events throughout the year.
  • Lots of opportunities for students in extracurricular activities like sports, music, and many others; students should actively look to be part of various clubs.
  • There is a lot to explore here; however, with course loads, it is hard to manage time between studies and other activities if not able to manage smartly.

It was close to my hometown, and the campus was not overly big. I took a tour and immediately felt welcomed and not intimidated by the size or people on the campus. The university had all the amenities of a big city campus, without the busyness and noise.

For a master's program generally, a GPA of 3.0 to 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (84–87%) is considered safe for securing admission to the university along with the fulfillment of other admission requirements. You can check on masters admission at University of Texas.
