Admission Requirements for International Students

For freshman admission:

  • Applicants must complete 15 year-long academic courses with a 3.40 GPA:
    • 2 years of history/social science of their country
    • 4 years of composition and literature in the language they are instructed
    • 3 years of math
    • 2 years of laboratory science (1 biological/1 physical)
    • 2 years of a second language
    • 1 yearlong course of visual and performing arts
    • 1 additional course from any subject areas above
  • Applicants must take either the ACT with Writing, the SAT with Writing or SAT with Essay. Scores have to be self-reported on the application and submitted to UC by the stated deadline.
  • The marks/grades for all the courses must be recorded exactly as reported by the international school; whether as numbers, letters, percentages or words.
  • Admission requirements for Indian students: Applicants must complete both year X and XII state board or CBSE examinations, with average marks above 70 and no mark below 60.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

The undergraduate applicants are required to complete a minimum of 15 college-preparatory courses. These courses are:

  • 2 years of History/social science
  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of Mathematics
  • 2 years of Laboratory Science
  • 2 years of a language other than English
  • 1 year of Visual and performing arts
  • 1 year of college-preparatory elective

Academic requirements:

  • The applicants must have an average GPA of 3.00 or better (3.40 or better for a non-resident of California) in these courses with no grade lower than a C.
  • Other than this, the applicants should meet the examination requirement by taking the ACT Plus Writing or the SAT with Essay no later than December of the senior year.
  • ACT and/or SAT scores have to be reported on the admissions application, request the testing agency to send an official copy of the scores to the university.
  • The university focuses on the highest combined score from the state test administration for the ACT with Writing test.
  • For the SAT with Essay, the university focuses on the highest total score from a single test date.

Graduate Admission Requirements

  • Transcripts: A scanned copy of the unofficial transcripts may be uploaded to the online application, or official copies may be sent to the Graduate Application Processing address.
    • Unofficial copies may either be scanned versions of the official transcript or if available a downloaded PDF from the applicant’s institution's online portal.
  • Statement of Purpose: The selection committees place particular importance on the statement of purpose. This should be a concise, well-written essay about the background of the applicants and their reasons for pursuing graduate study in their chosen field.
  • Personal History Statement is required of all applicants.
  • Supplemental Materials:
    • Resume
    • Some programs require additional materials or writing samples to be submitted with the application.
  • Three letters of recommendation: These must be submitted electronically through the online application.
  • Many graduate programs might also have special application requirements, such as writing samples, portfolios, auditions, or personal interviews.

If the applicants are applying for admission in the fall term, they should be sure to take the admissions tests no later than December of their senior year/last year prior to high school graduation, preferably earlier, to ensure that their application receives prompt and full consideration.

An important point of consideration for international students is that if their TOEFL score is older than two years, they will need to re-take the exam.
