University of Illinois, Springfield Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Admission requirements at UIS centre on an academic transcript, English proficiency, and financial documentation, with no SAT or GRE mandate for most programmes.
Postgraduate Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with CGPA 6.0/10 or 60% (recommended); three-year bachelor’s degrees need a course-by-course NACES evaluation
- English Proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS Academic 6.0, PTE Academic 53, or Duolingo English Test 110
- Credential Verification: WES or ECE course-by-course report for three-year bachelor’s holders
- Programme Specific: MBA prefers two years of work experience; MIS and Computer Science accept STEM bachelors in cognate areas
Undergraduate Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 completion with 70% to 85% (recommended) from CBSE, ISC or state boards
- English Proficiency: TOEFL iBT 61, IELTS Academic 5.0, PTE Academic 44, or Duolingo English Test 95
UIS also accepts Cambridge English and TOEFL Essentials for both levels, with waivers granted only when the bachelor’s medium of instruction is officially English.
Key insight: Three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees are not automatically rejected at UIS, which places it ahead of several US peers. A NACES course-by-course evaluation is the fix, and WES is the fastest route for Indian transcripts.
University of Illinois, Springfield Acceptance Rate 2027
UIS does not publish an official acceptance rate for international applicants. The institution-wide rate is 70% (estimated) based on third-party reporting, which places UIS in the moderately selective band for Indian students.
The Computer Science, Data Analytics and MIS programmes are more competitive internally because of OPT demand, while Public Administration, Public Health and Environmental Science are more accessible for Indian applicants.
Programme-level selection weighs transcripts, English scores and statements of purpose together, so a strong SOP can offset a borderline CGPA.
Reality check: A 70% headline rate masks STEM-track selectivity, so Indian applicants with CGPA under 6.5/10 should pair MS Computer Science with a safety option like MS MIS or MPA in the same application cycle.

University of Illinois, Springfield Campus, Facilities and Student Life
UIS is a 746-acre lakefront campus in Illinois’s state capital, built around Lake Springfield and ten minutes by car from downtown Springfield.
- Location and transport: Campus sits 10 km south of downtown Springfield; the free SMTD campus shuttle links residence halls, the student union and off-campus apartments
- Housing: On-campus guarantee for first-year international students; dorm rates from USD 875 per month in Founders and Lincoln Residence Halls
- Facilities: The Donald P. Jorgensen Hall houses the Center for Online Learning, Research and Service; the student union carries the UIS International Student Services office
- Indian community: Active Indian Student Association, annual Diwali and Holi events, and vegetarian halal food options in dining halls
- Safety and support: Dedicated international student advisors, a 24-hour campus police force and a free counselling centre
What Indian students say: Students highlight the small cohort size as the standout advantage. Faculty teach most classes directly, and graduate assistantship opportunities surface faster than at larger Big Ten campuses. The flip side is a quieter social scene than Chicago or Urbana.

[Source: UIS Office of Admissions and Financial Assistance]
Planning note: The International Merit Scholarship is applied automatically on admission for most Indian undergraduates with Class 12 above 85%, so there is no separate application. Graduate assistantships need direct outreach to department coordinators and should be targeted at least four months before the deadline.

US News 2027 also lists UIS at #10 Best Value School for In-State Students and #18 Best College for Veterans, both in the Midwest regional category, plus a position in the Top 50 Best Online Bachelor’s Programs in 2026.
Key insight: For Indian applicants, the US News Regional Universities Midwest ranking is the one US employers and I-140 immigration petitions recognise, since it validates accreditation and university quality. The absence of a QS or THE position does not affect H-1B or green-card eligibility.

University of Illinois, Springfield Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UIS graduates in STEM-designated programmes benefit from the 36-month OPT window, which is the primary career lever for Indian students placing into US jobs.
- Median starting salary (US market median for UIS fields): USD 70,000 to 85,000 per year (INR 66.1 to 80.3 lakh)
- MBA median post-degree salary (US market median): USD 75,000 to 95,000 per year (INR 70.9 to 89.8 lakh)
- Sectors recruiting UIS graduates: State government agencies, healthcare analytics firms, mid-market IT services, and nonprofit management organisations in Illinois and the broader Midwest
- Career services: UIS Career Development Center offers one-on-one coaching, resume workshops, and employer networking events open to F-1 students
- OPT and work rights: 12-month OPT for all fields, extended to 36 months for STEM-designated MS Computer Science, MS Data Analytics, MS MIS and MS Cybersecurity Management
Insider note: Indian STEM graduates who stay for the full 36-month OPT window have the highest success rate at converting to H-1B, since they get three lottery attempts rather than one. The 2026 H-1B lottery registration opens in March 2027.
University of Illinois, Springfield vs Peer Universities
The peer set for UIS covers mid-sized Midwest publics that compete for similar Indian applicants in Computer Science, MIS and Business.
| University | US News Regional Midwest 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad USA | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Illinois, Springfield | #29 (tie) | #363 of 1,023 | 21,818 / 20.6 lakh | Lowest fees in the Illinois public system |
| Illinois State University | NA (national tier) | NA | 24,500 / 23.1 lakh (estimated) | Larger campus near Bloomington-Normal |
| Southern Illinois University Edwardsville | NA | NA | 22,900 / 21.6 lakh (estimated) | Strong engineering reach near St Louis |
| Northern Illinois University | NA (national tier) | NA | 24,100 / 22.8 lakh (estimated) | Larger graduate cohort, Chicago-area location |
| Western Illinois University | #80 (Midwest) | NA | 19,500 / 18.4 lakh (estimated) | Lowest sticker price in the Illinois publics |
UIS stands out on three measurable fronts: the lowest cost of attendance in the Illinois publics outside Western Illinois, a NASPAA-accredited MPA that drives direct state government recruiting, and a 16.4% international student share that outpaces most Illinois regional peers. For Indian applicants weighing MS Computer Science against higher-cost options, UIS clears the ROI test on tuition alone.
Students should weigh the UIS trade-off honestly. The campus is smaller than Chicago or Urbana, with fewer Fortune 500 recruiters coming on-site. Students who need a dense job fair pipeline should also consider larger universities in USA, while those optimising for net cost should keep UIS at the top of the list.
University of Illinois, Springfield suits Indian students who want a STEM-designated MS or NASPAA-accredited MPA at a sticker price below USD 44,900 per year, backed by a 36-month OPT runway in a city where living costs stay below the US national average. The ROI maths works out at a total two-year investment near INR 54 lakh against a market median salary of INR 70 lakh, with a straightforward F-1 visa pathway through the Chicago consulate.
UIS is not the right pick for applicants chasing name-brand global rankings or dense corporate recruiting on campus. If a QS top-200 badge is non-negotiable, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign remains the stronger choice from the same system.
University of Illinois, Springfield FAQs
Ques. What graduate programmes at UIS are STEM-designated for OPT?
Ans. Four UIS graduate programmes carry STEM designation that extends OPT work authorisation to 36 months: MS Computer Science, MS Data Analytics, MS Management Information Systems and MS Cybersecurity Management. STEM graduates receive 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month extension, giving them three H-1B lottery attempts instead of one. Non-STEM programmes like MBA, MPA and MPH qualify for the standard 12-month OPT only.
Ques. Does University of Illinois, Springfield accept three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees?
Ans. Yes, UIS accepts three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees for postgraduate admission, which puts it ahead of several US universities that require a four-year programme. The university asks for a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES member organisation like WES or ECE. Applicants should budget four to six weeks for the evaluation and start the process before applying rather than after receiving a conditional offer.
Ques. How much on-campus work can Indian F-1 students do at UIS?
Ans. F-1 international students at UIS can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during Fall and Spring semesters and full-time during official breaks. Common roles include library assistants, dining hall staff, campus tour guides and research assistants. Graduate assistantship positions carry a tuition waiver plus a stipend and are more valuable than hourly campus jobs, but they need direct outreach to department chairs.
Ques. Is the GRE required for UIS graduate programmes?
Ans. Most UIS graduate programmes do not require the GRE for admission, including MS Computer Science, MS Data Analytics, MS Management Information Systems, MBA and MPA. The admission decision weighs academic transcripts, English proficiency scores, statement of purpose and letters of recommendation. Programmes may still accept a strong GRE score if submitted voluntarily, which can support borderline CGPA applications in competitive STEM tracks.
Ques. Can Indian students waive the TOEFL or IELTS at UIS?
Ans. UIS grants English test waivers in limited cases where the Indian bachelor’s degree medium of instruction is officially English and documented by the issuing institution. The university asks for a formal letter from the registrar’s office confirming English medium across the full degree. Applicants from English-medium programmes at central universities and most private universities commonly qualify, while state board graduates typically need to submit a test score.
Ques. What is the application fee at University of Illinois, Springfield?
Ans. UIS charges a non-refundable application fee of USD 75 for graduate applications (INR 7,088) and USD 60 for undergraduate international applications (INR 5,670). The fee is paid by credit card during online submission. Fee waivers are rare for international applicants and are not available based on economic hardship alone. Applicants should budget this cost upfront along with the WES evaluation fee of around USD 220.
Ques. Which Indian education loans cover University of Illinois, Springfield?
Ans. UIS is on the approved list for every major Indian education lender including HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial Services, ICICI Bank, SBI Global Ed-Vantage, Axis Bank and Prodigy Finance. Public sector banks require collateral above INR 20 lakh while NBFCs offer unsecured loans up to INR 50 lakh for STEM programmes. Lenders typically approve 90-100% of the total cost of attendance for Indian applicants with a confirmed I-20.
Ques. Can an Indian student bring a spouse to UIS on an F-2 visa?
Ans. Yes, F-1 students at UIS can bring a spouse and children on dependent F-2 visas. The I-20 for dependents is issued by UIS once the primary student shows additional financial proof of around USD 6,000 per dependent per year. F-2 spouses cannot work in the US but can enrol in part-time study. Dependents can also apply for a Social Security Number only if they have a work authorisation document.

- Cultural Fest:
A celebration of diverse Indian cultures with dance performances, music competitions, food stalls, and traditional attire displays.
Fees
- The fees in this college is little high when compared with other colleges near by.
- The fees goes by around 3000 dollars for one subject. But if we take 8 subjects it will be more than $30,000 and health insurance is not optional and it is mandatory. So when compared with other universities nearby it is not so low in this university. But, it is worth it.

Likes
- Great campus life
- Professors and syllabus focuses on hand on exercises
- Some professors are really helpful and just the best teachers.
Dislikes
- Administrative support is zero. All are unprofessional and not helpful at all. Being 1st semester student I had taken an extra course therefore emailed my course guidance professor and he advised to drop a course after the drop due date had passed. Later I received a bill of $6000 and after reaching out almost everyday for 3 months the admins would not help me at all and was just putting blame on each other, ignored my emails and tried to avoid me as much as possible so that I would have to pay the fee eventually. There is no support from university in such cases as they only want to fill their pockets and try to cheat students.
- Unclear course guidance : this problem was consistent throughout the course. Would suggest to not reach out to admin and try to talk to students as much as possible for these type of issues.
- A lot of workload which is so stressful. This is not much of an issue as you have 3 to 4 subjects and obviously every subject will have quizes and assignments. Make sure to take one hard and rest easy subjects in a semester. I did a mistake and took core difficult subjects all at once.
Campus Life
- Library, music, labs, campus police, medical, playgrounds
- There are many communities so they celebrate all festivals together; there are many cultural events
- There are sports amongst students like volleyball, football, and all of that. I am not interested so I don’t know much
- There are many parks and sports equipment facilities
- There are music faculties too if you are interested in learning something to play.
Fees
- $35000 total cost of everything; this includes tuition fees and insurance.
- Fee is charged semester-wise
- But I believe that the students pay rent starting from $200 to $500 based on preferences and amenities. They also pay some deposit of $500.There are many buses which go to college in hourly basis
