George Washington University vs Peer Universities

The peer set below compares George Washington University with other private United States research universities that Indian applicants shortlist alongside GWU for MS and MBA programmes in urban East Coast locations.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh)Differentiator
George Washington University#381Global #21065,808 / 59.6 lakhWashington, D.C. federal-government access

New York University#43NA68,000 / 61.5 lakh (market median)Manhattan location and finance access
American UniversityNANA52,000 / 47.1 lakh (market median)Public affairs and international service

George Washington University differentiates on Washington, D.C. proximity to federal agencies, the World Bank, IMF and think tanks, which drives internship access unmatched by East Coast peers outside Georgetown. GWU also offers a wider spread of STEM master’s programmes than American University, at fees comparable to Boston University.

George Washington University suits Indian applicants seeking a mid-tier globally ranked United States private research university with strong federal-sector and policy access, a total investment of INR 90 to 150 lakh (tuition plus living), and STEM OPT eligibility offsetting the cost via a market-median USD 76,000 starting salary. The Washington, D.C. internship pipeline for policy, consulting and international development remains its single strongest India-facing advantage, and Indian graduates use the 36-month post-study work window to convert internships into H-1B roles.

The university is not the right fit for cost-sensitive Indian applicants prioritising sticker-price savings, since public flagships such as University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign offer comparable STEM outcomes at 30 to 40% lower tuition. Applicants focused purely on top-100 QS prestige should also compare against New York University or Boston University before finalising.

George Washington University FAQs

Ques. Does George Washington University waive the GRE for Indian MS applicants?

Ans. Yes, most STEM master’s programmes at George Washington University, including MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and MS Cybersecurity, list the GRE as optional or waived for Fall 2027 entry. Indian applicants with a strong bachelor’s GPA, quantitative coursework or relevant work experience typically do not need GRE scores, though a competitive score can strengthen scholarship consideration. Check the specific programme page for current requirements.

Ques. How long can Indian graduates work in the US after GWU?

Ans. Indian graduates from George Washington University qualify for 12 months of standard OPT after completing their degree, allowing full-time work authorisation in their field of study. STEM-designated programmes such as MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and MS Cybersecurity add a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving Indian graduates a total of 36 months of US work authorisation to secure H-1B sponsorship.

Ques. Are part-time jobs allowed for Indian students at GWU?

Ans. F-1 visa regulations allow Indian students at George Washington University to work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during academic sessions and 40 hours per week during official breaks. Off-campus employment is restricted to Curricular Practical Training (CPT) after the first academic year, tied to programme requirements. On-campus roles include research assistantships, library positions and dining services.

Ques. What is the application fee at George Washington University for Indian applicants?

Ans. The graduate application fee at George Washington University is USD 80 (approximately INR 7,240) for most programmes, with the School of Business charging USD 90 for the MBA. Fee waivers are available through participation in recruitment events, campus visits and select fellowship programmes; verify current waiver options on each school’s admissions page.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise GWU?

Ans. George Washington University features on the approved-institution lists of major Indian education loan providers including HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial Services, InCred, Auxilo, Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing. Public-sector banks such as SBI and Bank of Baroda also fund GWU admits under their overseas education loan schemes, typically with collateral for loans above INR 40 lakh.

Ques. Does George Washington University require SAT scores for UG admission?

Ans. George Washington University follows a test-optional policy for undergraduate admission, meaning Indian applicants can apply without SAT or ACT scores. Strong Class 12 marks, essays, extracurriculars and recommendations carry primary weight. Indian applicants with competitive SAT scores (1400+) can strengthen scholarship consideration by submitting them, but omitting scores does not disadvantage the application.

Ques. What documents does GWU need for Indian transcript verification?

Ans. George Washington University requires a WES course-by-course credential evaluation for Indian bachelor’s degrees, including marksheets for all semesters, provisional and final degree certificates and consolidated transcripts. Applicants must arrange WES to send the evaluation directly to GWU. Processing takes 4 to 6 weeks, so Indian applicants should initiate WES at least 8 weeks before programme deadlines.

Ques. Can Indian dependents accompany students on the F-1 visa to GWU?

Ans. Yes, spouses and unmarried children under 21 of Indian F-1 visa holders at George Washington University can apply for F-2 dependent visas. The primary F-1 holder must show additional financial proof, typically USD 8,000 to 12,000 per dependent per year, on the I-20. F-2 dependents cannot work in the US but can enrol in part-time academic study; children can attend K-12 schooling.

  • Campus life is very extravagant and exciting. The university has its own student union who organises various events and at the same time the university has its own club within the university premises. It has a sports park as well for those who are interested in sports.

  • There is a startup club, which is the best. There is one campus but hostels/accommodations are at various locations. They have Christmas festivals, tech events, marquees, etc. Sports event happen but since it is very distant from the university, I hardly join.
  • Library block is a very high-rise building with full 24/7 automation with desktop printers, etc. Very silent place to stay.

Fees

  • Tuition fee: 19500 pounds; advance: 2000 pounds; living expense: 1000 pounds per month
  • Hostel Rent u need to pay quarterly approximately 30K Per month in Indian currency. Food cost is 20K per month. Travel expenses is 10K per month if you prefer public transport.
  • Other expenses are 10K miscellaneous. University food pricing is affordable and available inside campus. Fees you need to pay in installments or in advance as possible. There is no mandate.

  • I think two campuses were there; one is at Foggy Bottom (our campus) and the other is at Mount Vernon.
  • General libraries and those specific to school libraries are also there. Sports and Medical services are also good.
  • Many events take place like Halloween, etc. and more can be done by joining any clubs.
  • There are not many sports, as there are no open grounds in our campus. Cultural and Student Organizations are very good.

Fees

  • Tuition and Fees—$42,918
  • Living Expenses - $20,850
  • Other - $3,200
  • The abovementioned is for 12 months; mostly tuition fees are credit-based, which was $1,995 per credit for us, and we were required to complete 30 credits in the total course. We needed to pay semester-wise fees, though.
  • Rent depends on how you live and generally with sharing it's $500-$600 and transportation and other expenses like food can be around $300-$500.

There are different forms of scholarships for international students in the USA through grants, work while studying, and scholarships. Students may receive awards between 4,000 to 20,000 USD per year in scholarships. More than 66% of students receive some form of financial aid.
