As per US News, the university sits 29th nationally among United States institutions and 11th among top public universities. Its QS trajectory has softened from the top-160 band in 2022 toward the mid-200s in 2027, while ARWU has held it inside the world top-60 for six consecutive years. Departmental strength shows most clearly in Atmospheric Science, Economics, Aerospace Engineering and Computer Science.

The graduate non-resident rate has climbed roughly 3 to 4 percent annually and is offset for many admits through departmental assistantships and external fellowships. Indian students on the F-1 visa qualify for up to 36 months of STEM OPT after graduation, and the campus sits inside a federal, defence and biotech recruiting corridor for graduates choosing universities in the USA.

University of Maryland, College Park Admission 2027

The University of Maryland, College Park runs a Fall-primary intake for graduate international candidates, with Spring available only for select programmes. Fall 2027 applications opened July 1, 2026 for most departments, with the Graduate School directing candidates to individual programme deadlines.

MilestoneDateNotes for Indian Applicants
Next major Fall 2027 deadlineDecember 4, 2026MS Computer Science deadline; other departments range November 2026 to February 2027; verify by programme
WES credential verificationStart by October 2026Allow 6 to 8 weeks for Indian transcript evaluation

As per the Department of Computer Science, the MS admissions portal closes December 4, 2026 with decisions released mid-February to late March 2027. Smith MBA follows a six-round calendar and typically closes international review by March 2027. Undergraduate Spring 2027 international freshman applications close August 1, 2026.

Planning note: Indian applicants should file the application at least four weeks before the programme deadline. This gives Financial Certification review, WES processing and any writing supplement enough runway before the reviewer window closes.

University of Maryland, College Park Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The Graduate School sets baseline eligibility for masters and doctoral applicants, while individual programmes may add stricter thresholds. Undergraduate applicants apply through a single university-wide portal.

Postgraduate requirements:

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, first class or higher (65%+ Indian equivalent). Three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees are considered case-by-case after WES review.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 96 (0-120 legacy scale), or TOEFL iBT 5.0 (new 1-6 band scale, effective January 21, 2026), or IELTS Academic 7.0, or PTE Academic 68.
  • Credential evaluation: WES course-by-course evaluation is recommended for Indian transcripts and mandatory for many departments.
  • Standardised tests: GRE required for most STEM masters; GMAT/GRE optional for Smith MBA in the 2026-2027 cycle.

Undergraduate requirements:

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with 85%+ (CBSE/ICSE) or 90%+ (state boards) recommended for competitive majors.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS 7.0, PTE 68, or Duolingo English Test 120.
  • Standardised tests: SAT and ACT are test-optional for the Fall 2027 cohort.

Note: The TOEFL iBT scoring scale changed on January 21, 2026. ETS now issues scores on a 1-6 band with half-point steps, while carrying the legacy 0-120 total on reports through 2028. UMD accepts both, but confirm which figure your programme quotes.

University of Maryland, College Park Acceptance Rate 2027

The overall undergraduate acceptance rate is around 45 percent, calculated from 26,623 admits out of 59,369 applicants for the Class of 2027 cohort. Graduate selectivity is not published centrally and varies considerably by department, with STEM masters typically running tighter than the university-wide figure.

International acceptance mirrors the overall 45 percent band, though limited-enrollment majors such as Computer Science, Business and Engineering apply a second internal review gateway. Departmental fit, standardised test scores and Statement of Purpose quality weigh heavily inside those secondary reviews.

Reality check: A 45 percent overall rate underestimates the true bar for Indian STEM applicants targeting Computer Science, Data Science or Engineering. Assume 20 to 30 percent for those departments and calibrate GRE and profile strength accordingly.

University of Maryland, College Park Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The University of Maryland, College Park sits on a 1,335-acre campus in the College Park suburb, eight miles from Washington D.C. and directly connected by the Purple Line and Metro Green Line to Union Station.

  • Location and transport: Free Shuttle-UM buses circulate the campus; the College Park-U of Md Metro station places downtown D.C. within 25 minutes.
  • Housing: On-campus residence for international graduates is limited; most Indian students take off-campus apartments in College Park, Greenbelt or Hyattsville from $850 to $1,500 per month.
  • Notable facilities: The A. James Clark School of Engineering complex, McKeldin Library, the E.A. Fernandez IDEA Factory maker lab, and the Xfinity Center for athletics.
  • Indian community: An active Indian Students Association hosts Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; South Asian grocery stores and vegetarian dining options are within a 10-minute drive.

What Indian students say: D.C. proximity is the biggest draw, especially for federal internships and consulting recruiting. The weather range from humid summers to sub-zero winters is the recurring adjustment challenge in first-semester reviews.

Subject rankings tell a stronger story than the aggregate. THE 2026 places Computer Science at =63 and Education at =54, while ARWU 2025 ranks Atmospheric Science 14th, Economics 19th and Aerospace Engineering 31st worldwide. As per US News, the university also holds 11th place among top United States public universities.

Key insight: Employer recognition for an Indian applicant tracks more with US News national rank (#29) and subject strength than with QS World position. For consulting, tech and federal roles, hiring managers weight the Smith and Clark School reputations directly.

University of Maryland, College Park Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Graduate employment outcomes at the University of Maryland, College Park are anchored by the D.C. federal, defence and technology recruiting corridor. Placement rates are not published as a university-wide figure; Smith MBA reports over 90 percent employment within three months of graduation.

  • Median MS starting salary: $75,000 to $95,000 for STEM masters (market median estimate; individual programme figures vary).
  • Median MBA starting salary: $110,000 to $125,000 base for Smith MBA graduates (market median estimate).
  • Recruiting sectors: Federal government agencies, defence contractors, big tech, consulting, biotechnology and financial services.
  • Career support: The University Career Center and Smith Office of Career Services run dedicated employer treks, industry days and Handshake postings.
  • Notable alumni: Sergey Brin (Google co-founder, BS Mathematics and Computer Science 1993) and multiple technology and federal-sector leaders.

Insider note: Federal-sector hiring often requires US citizenship, which limits Indian graduates to defence prime contractors, consultancies and technology firms with cleared subsidiaries. Focus outreach on private-sector recruiters from month one.

University of Maryland, College Park vs Peer Universities

The peer set below draws from large public research universities in the United States plus one Indian benchmark. Cells marked NA are not verified in this cycle; confirm on each university’s official page.

The University of Maryland, College Park differentiates on Washington D.C. proximity, a top-30 US national placement and departmental strength in Atmospheric Science, Economics, Aerospace and Computer Science. Indian applicants weigh it strongest against Purdue and Penn State for STEM masters, where cost and post-graduation salary bands sit within a narrow range.

The University of Maryland, College Park fits Indian students who want a public flagship inside the federal recruiting belt without the sticker price of a top-25 private university. A two-year MS Computer Science investment of roughly ₹80 lakh in total cost typically pays back inside three years on a $90,000 median starting salary in the D.C. or East Coast tech market.

Indian students gain from the 36-month STEM OPT window, a dense alumni network across technology and government-adjacent industries, and Metro-connected internships in the world’s largest federal contracting market. F-1 visa approval rates for US public flagships remain among the strongest, and the Smith and Clark School pathways carry direct recognition with Indian employers.

It is not the right choice for candidates chasing a top-100 QS badge or highly ranked pure business schools; comparable Indian applicants who prioritise brand ranking often look at Purdue or Georgia Tech for engineering, and Indiana Kelley or UT Austin McCombs for business. Match the university to the intended sector, not the headline number.

University of Maryland, College Park FAQs

Ques. Which English tests does the University of Maryland Graduate School accept from Indian applicants?

Ans. The Graduate School accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic and PTE Academic scores from Indian graduate applicants. Minimum thresholds are TOEFL iBT 96 (0-120 legacy scale) or 5.0 (new 1-6 scale from January 21, 2026), IELTS 7.0, and PTE 68. Duolingo English Test is accepted at the undergraduate level but not universally at the graduate level; individual departments may add stricter section-wise minimums, so confirm with the target programme.

Ques. What is the graduate application fee at UMD for international students?

Ans. The graduate application fee is $75 (approximately ₹7,185) per programme submission and is non-refundable. Indian applicants pay through the online graduate application portal using an international credit or debit card. Fee waivers are extremely limited at the graduate level and are typically reserved for domestic applicants with documented financial hardship or specific fellowship programmes such as McNair Scholars, so international applicants should budget for the full amount.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at the University of Maryland?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and up to 40 hours during official breaks. Common on-campus roles include library assistant, dining services and research or teaching assistantships. Off-campus work requires prior USCIS approval via Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training and is typically limited to internships or roles tied directly to the field of study.

Ques. Does the Smith School MBA at UMD require GMAT or GRE for Indian applicants?

Ans. The Smith School MBA has kept GMAT and GRE optional for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle for most applicant profiles. Indian applicants with a strong quantitative bachelor’s degree and 3 to 5 years of work experience can apply without submitting a test score. Test submission is still recommended for scholarship consideration and for applicants whose undergraduate GPA falls below the class median or who lack quantitative coursework.

Ques. How does the University of Maryland verify Indian academic transcripts and degrees?

Ans. Most graduate departments require or recommend a WES course-by-course credential evaluation for Indian bachelor’s degrees. Three-year Indian degrees are reviewed case-by-case; some programmes accept them, others require an additional year of study or a PG diploma. Undergraduate applicants submit official Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets with certified English translations. Board attestation and apostille may be requested during the I-20 issuance stage.

Ques. Which Indian banks approve education loans for UMD graduate programmes?

Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial Services, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Bank of Baroda regularly finance UMD graduate admits. Loan tickets typically range from ₹40 lakh to ₹1.5 crore, covering tuition and living costs. Non-collateral loans are offered by private lenders up to ₹75 lakh subject to co-applicant income, while public sector banks require immovable collateral for amounts above ₹40 lakh under the Model Education Loan Scheme.

Ques. Does the University of Maryland offer conditional admission for lower TOEFL scores?

Ans. Yes, the Graduate School operates tiered English-support admission for candidates below full-admission thresholds. TOEFL 88-95 or IELTS 6.5 candidates enter the English Bridge Program, while TOEFL 87 and below or IELTS 6.0 candidates are routed to Intensive English before starting coursework. Full academic admission is granted once the applicant clears the required English support level. Online and 12-week term programmes require full-admission scores from day one.

Ques. What health insurance is required for international students at UMD?

Ans. All F-1 and J-1 international students must enrol in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) unless they submit an approved waiver with equivalent coverage. SHIP costs $1,232 for Fall 2026 and $1,707 for Spring 2027 (approximately ₹28,150 combined) for graduate students enrolled in 48 units or more. Coverage includes hospitalisation, prescription drugs, mental health, dental and vision benefits through the University Health Center.

  • There is only one campus which is huge, vibrant and full of energy. It offers excellent facilities, including one of the largest university libraries, modern sports complexes and health and counselling centres and various recreational spaces.
  • The campus hosts exciting annual events and fests, such as Maryland Day and Homecoming Art Attack, which bring together students from all disciplines.

  • My college, University of Maryland, has a main campus called University of Maryland-College Park. Other campuses such as Global Campus, Baltimore County, and Shady Grove are affiliates of UMD but not the main school itself.
  • There are three libraries: McKeldin, Hornbake, and STEM Library. We have numerous sports facilities including an outdoor bouldering and climbing wall, an indoor climbing wall, an outdoor swimming pool, an indoor natatorium, several basketball, volleyball, squash, badminton, racquetball, tennis, and pickleball courts. We also have two gym facilities, one at Eppley Recreational Center and the other at Ritchie Coliseum with multiple levels and several machines and dumbbells. Additionally, at the Student Stamp Union, one can find numerous billiard tables, bowling alleys, and gaming televisions. Recently, gaming rooms have also opened at Ritchie Coliseum for e-sports.
  • There is also the University Health Center, which is the first point of contact in case of an emergency, and utilizes the insurance that is mandatory for all students. Our university also provides several mental health and distress-relief options including the Mental Coalition Club, counseling center with professional therapy, and survivor support.
  • Major campus events include Maryland Day, Homecoming, First Look Fair, Second Look Fair, and gameday tailgates for football and basketball. Popular events for the Indian community include Mock Shaadi, Blackout Bhangra, Diwali, and Holi celebrations.
  • Extracurricular activities cannot be summarized in a list. Because we are proud of our enormous student body, there is a club for every interest out there. And if there is not, it is very easy to form a club by finding other like-minded members.

Fees

  • Fees are charged in a mix of credit-based and semester-wise basis. Taking lower than 12 credits makes a student part-time, while there is a flat rate for 12+ credits. According to the Undergraduate Tuition & Fees website, the total tuition and mandatory fees for a semester total to $20,593. The mandatory fees include the costs of athletics, shuttle bus, student union, student activities, recreation services, student sustainability, and student counseling center. If enrolled in a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) such as Business, Engineering, and Computer Science, students pay an additional $1,545.30, bringing the total fees per semester to $22,138.30.
  • Monthly expenses are highly variable as it is contingent on standards of living that a student wishes to maintain. Rent ranges from $650-1400 per month depending on whether you have a shared room or a personal room and the total number of bedrooms in the apartment. Additionally, spending time with friends, going to DC, and going on dates could cost higher. If you are living on campus (which is mandatory as a freshman and optional and limited for later years), you are required to purchase a full dining plan, which currently costs $2,426.09 for a semester. There are also block meal options, allowing you to purchase 25, 50, 100, and 150 meals which cost lower. In my experience, I spend around $1000-1200 a month which included rent, utilities, meal plan, and miscellaneous expenses, which results in a total cost of $27,000 per semester. The cost of a flight to and back from India has not been included, which usually costs about $1600 for a round trip, again contingent on when the flight is being booked.

  • My campus has many colleges, some of them colleges of computer science and natural mathematics, the Robert H. • There is technically only one main campus in College Park, but there is another branch in Baltimore County, which isn't as good.
  • UMD has the Hornbake Library & McKeldin Library. The Eppley Recreation Centre has all the infrastructure for most of the sports you can think of. The University Health Centre has an acute care service where you can go for any injury you might have gotten.
  • Popular events include Maryland Day, which is a big annual fair; Homecoming Week, which is very happening with a lot of back-to-back events; and various cultural and professional clubs like the MUN, Robotics, and Hyperloop, a club and also a design club.
  • There is a group that meets up to play soccer whenever; you can join that group in the groupMe app. Many of the sport enthusiast groups are through the GroupMe app. If you want to join any community (sports or cultural), you will find it there, and anyone can join it and stay posted on any events these groups might have.
  • There is a Graduate Labour Union (GLU) that you can join if you want to represent the voice of the grad student demands.

Fees

  • 1 Course: USD 4,146.00
  • 10 Courses: USD 41,460.00
  • Mandatory fees per semester: USD 690
  • Fees are credit based so per course, which have to be registered semester-wise.
  • The transportation for buses is free all around town. Metro, on the other hand, is paid and takes USD 4 to go to Washington, DC. My monthly groceries come to be around USD 60 per month but that is because I use the dining hall more.

  • There are many events which happened, especially during the first week, there was silent the school painting, events, bowling events, and so much more. It was so fun and we could mingle with other people. The facilities available on campus are a lot the library. There is a full fledged recreation centre and of course good medical services as well, the major even would be the homecoming week where it was like a famous football match, which happened between the university of Maryland and the University of Southern California, apart from that there is Maryland and so much other more events.
  • Never was something called the first look fair where all the student organisations and clubs came up with stalls and introduced their clubs to everyone, and we could join by signing up at the event.

Fees

  • The tuition fee is $4,146 per course and during the 2-year masters degree, we will need to complete 10 courses. So in total it would be $41,460 (just the tuition fee).
  • I am staying in an apartment near campus and the rent for a shared room I am paying is $610 (I got it for an early bird discount). The minimum rent for an apartment is around $500 on an average and for a private room it is $900.
  • The fees are charged semester-wise. For my particular course, I should take 9 credits per semester, which is 3 courses, so I pay $12,438 per semester.
  • Transportation is completely free around campus. I mean the shuttle bus to the university and nearby places. If you want to go in the metro, its chargeable; on weekdays it's around $5 and on weekends around $2.5.
  • Grocery shops are very limited around this area, with only 2 supermarkets. However, you can order online. On average, the monthly groceries for me are around $100. There is also a good Indian store near the university (20 minutes by bus).

Overview

I chose this university as this university is a public Ivy League school and is well reputed, plus the course it offered was among the top 10 schools in the USA. As stated earlier the program was a perfect blend of technical and non-technical subjects, something that I was looking for.

Most graduate programs at the University of Maryland require a minimum DET score of 115. Undergraduate programs at the University of Maryland typically don't need a DET score. However, you can explore the University of Maryland courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.

The University of Maryland offers accommodation facilities for international students. The university offers apartment-style, suite-style, traditional-style housing. Students can also choose from single-gender housing, mixed-gender housing, and gender-inclusive housing.
