American University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants meet a standard academic threshold, an English-language test minimum, and standardised programme documents. Specific test scores vary by school and programme.

Postgraduate Admission Requirements at American University

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s from a recognised Indian university with CGPA 6.5/10 or 65 to 70% (recommended); a three-year Indian bachelor’s typically requires an additional one-year master’s or postgraduate diploma.
  • English language: TOEFL iBT and IELTS minimums are set per school; verify at the American University international admissions page before applying.
  • Documents: Statement of purpose, resume, two letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and programme-specific writing sample where required.
  • Standardised tests: GRE waived for most SIS masters; Kogod MBA accepts GMAT 500, Executive Assessment or waiver based on work experience; GRE required for some CAS science programmes.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements at American University

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with 80% or above (recommended); AP, IB or A-Level results considered where available.
  • English language: TOEFL iBT, IELTS or Duolingo score required; verify minimums at the American University international admissions page.
  • Testing: SAT and ACT are test-optional for first-year applicants across all undergraduate schools.

Key insight: Indian applicants with a medium-of-instruction letter from an English-medium bachelor’s often qualify for an English test waiver; confirm with the school office before locking in the application.

American University Acceptance Rate 2027

American University reports an overall acceptance rate of 62%, placing it in the moderately selective band among US private research universities. Graduate programme selectivity varies by school, with SIS and Kogod applying tighter thresholds than the university-wide average.

Indian applicants with a CGPA above 7.5/10 and a clear career narrative align well with SIS and SPA graduate review. The MBA and MS Analytics tracks weigh work experience and quantitative preparation more heavily than the university average.

Reality check: A 62% overall rate does not mean easy entry; Indian applicants competing for SIS scholarships face a much smaller admit pool, and merit funding usually caps at the top decile of the applicant class.

Ans. American University runs English-taught masters across seven schools, including MA Public Policy at SPA, MS Analytics, MS Computer Science and MS Data Science at CAS and Kogod, LL.M. at Washington College of Law, MBA at Kogod, and MPA Public Administration at SPA. All programmes are delivered in English, and no additional language qualification beyond the standard TOEFL or IELTS is required for Indian applicants.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time during studies at AU?

Ans. F-1 visa holders at American University may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during term time and full-time during vacations, per US federal regulation. Off-campus employment requires either Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation processed by the AU International Student and Scholar Services office. Common on-campus roles include research assistantships, library shifts and administrative office positions.

Ques. Does American University waive GMAT or GRE for Indian MBA applicants?

Ans. The Kogod MBA and MS Analytics programmes at American University consider GMAT or GRE waivers based on undergraduate quantitative background, work experience of at least three years, or a completed prior graduate degree. Indian applicants with engineering or commerce degrees and CGPA above 7.5/10 have a reasonable case for waiver. The waiver request is submitted with the standard application and reviewed by the admissions committee.

Ques. How much is the AU application fee and can Indian students get it waived?

Ans. American University charges a USD 55 (INR 4,785) application fee for graduate programmes and USD 70 (INR 6,090) for undergraduate applications; verify current amounts at the graduate admissions page. Fee waivers exist for applicants attending recruitment events, current Peace Corps volunteers, and select fellowship programme participants. Indian applicants attending official virtual open houses often receive a waiver code by email.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise American University?

Ans. Major Indian lenders including HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred, Auxilo, ICICI Bank and SBI provide education loans for admitted American University students, up to INR 60 lakh unsecured and higher with collateral. American University sits on the approved institution lists of most public and private banks, given its long-standing US News national ranking and F-1 sponsorship track record for Indian graduates.

Ques. Are dependent visas allowed for Indian students at AU?

Ans. Spouses and children of F-1 students at American University qualify for F-2 dependent visas, filed through the ISSS office at AU. Financial proof must show additional USD 5,500 (INR 4.79 lakh) per year for a spouse and USD 4,000 (INR 3.48 lakh) per year for each child on the Declaration of Finances form. F-2 dependents cannot work in the United States, though children under 18 may attend US public schools.

Ques. What credential verification does American University accept for Indian transcripts?

Ans. American University accepts credential evaluations from World Education Services and Educational Credential Evaluators for Indian bachelor’s and master’s transcripts. The evaluation must be a course-by-course report sent directly to AU by the evaluator. Indian applicants should initiate the WES or ECE process at least 8 weeks before the priority deadline, given typical processing timelines and document verification with the Indian university.

Ques. How does the AU refund policy work if an Indian student defers?

Ans. American University processes tuition refunds on a sliding scale based on the week of withdrawal, with full refund through the first week and 25% by the fifth week for Fall and Spring semesters. Deferral of admission is possible for graduate programmes on a case-by-case basis, generally for one term or up to one year, without repeat application. Campus Life

  • My college is a city college and only has one Campus in Northwest Washington DC in an area called Tenleytown.
  • There is a 4-floor large library, gym, swimming pool health center, academic coaching center, and sports facilities such as two stadiums.
  • The main campus festival is during the first week of orientation, wherein we have a week-long celebration. The popular events also include games, especially basketball. Famous clubs include the graduate journal of different schools and the school paper called The Eagle.
  • We have sports like swimming, baseball, basketball, wrestling and weightlifting that students take part in. There is also track and athletics. Cultural events are centred around orientation and festivals like Thanksgiving, Christmas etc. These include special meals organised on campus. We have a student government that organizes most of them.

Fees

  • The semester-wise tuition is 10,000 USD which has to be paid every semester. There are four semesters so the total tuition is 40,000 USD. Mainly the tuition is 7,000 USD for each semester 2,000 USD is the health insurance and the rest of the costs include using campus services like the gym and library.
  • As a graduate student, we are supposed to live off-campus and find our own accommodation the average rent in DC is 2,000 USD per month. Living costs per month is approximately 1,000 USD.

The campus is little bit small around 90 acres, but has all the requirements and never felt something is missing, it has its own library, sports arena, swimming pool, dinning halls, and on campus halls for undergrads too, moreover they also have campus bus which takes you from metro station to campus and vice versa.

Overview

The location and opportunities that I would have access to while attending American University seemed great and suitable for my area of study. Also, they guarantee to meet your total financial need when applying early decision, which is what I did. I took a lot of AP classes in high school to prepare for college, which helped in the decision process due to my commitment to learning. The School or International Service is very highly ranked among colleges in the U.S for studying international relations, which made me very interested in studying here. I became interested in this field of study due to my interest in law, and I discovered that this major would be a good path as an undergraduate degree leading up to law school.
