UT Austin Eligibility for Indian Students

UT Austin does not publish rigid cut-offs, but Indian applicants are competitive at the thresholds below. The freshman pool is capped by the Texas 10 percent law, which reserves 90 percent of first-year seats for in-state high-school toppers, so international applicants compete in the tighter out-of-state pool.

  • UG general entry: Class XII at 65 percent minimum, with 85 percent+ competitive for Cockrell Engineering, McCombs BBA, and BS Computer Science.
  • UG subject prerequisites: Mathematics through Class XII for STEM tracks, Physics for engineering, and 4 years of English coursework.
  • PG general entry: Four-year Bachelor’s degree at 3.0 GPA on 4.0 scale (around 65 percent Indian equivalent), with a strong upward trend in the final two years.
  • PG subject prerequisites: Undergraduate coursework in the target field, quantitative background for MS Data Science, Business Analytics, Finance.
  • Standardised tests: SAT and ACT are test-optional for freshman UG; GRE is required for most PG STEM programs; GMAT or GRE for MBA.

UT Austin English Test Requirements

Institution-wide minimums for graduate admission are TOEFL 79 iBT, IELTS Academic 6.5, or Duolingo 115. McCombs MBA and MS Finance require higher (TOEFL 105, IELTS 7.5). Individual programs may set their own floors above the university minimum.

UT Austin IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Indian applicants qualify for a full English proficiency waiver. UT Austin’s official exempt list includes India among 22 countries where English is the medium of instruction. If your Class XII and Bachelor’s coursework were completed in English-medium institutions in India, you do not need to submit TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo scores. Applicants from Puducherry or Quebec-model schools should confirm before dropping the test.

UT Austin PG Programs and English Scores

UT Austin offers over 170 master’s programs across 18 colleges. The tables below show popular routes for Indian PG applicants, with verified minimum eligibility and English score floors. Base tuition for graduate international students averages USD 22,000 to USD 30,000 per academic year (around INR 21.01 to INR 28.65 Lakhs) depending on the program, with McCombs and Cockrell running higher. Complete course-wise fees and program list lives on the fees page.

Indian applicants who studied in English-medium institutions are exempt from the English test entirely (see the waiver section above). GRE is required for STEM programs but has been temporarily waived for some non-STEM master’s — check each program page.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official UT Austin Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.

UT Austin UG Programs and Requirements

UT Austin’s undergraduate offerings span 13 colleges. Freshman admission is major-specific — you apply to a first-choice major and an optional alternate. Getting into Cockrell Engineering, McCombs BBA, or Turing Scholars in CS is significantly harder than general admission because these use holistic file reviews with much lower yield rates for international applicants.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.

Insider note: UT Austin admits by first-choice major. If you list a competitive major like Computer Science and are not admitted, the university reviews you for your alternate choice — often a College of Natural Sciences track — before rejecting outright. Choose your alternate carefully.

UT Austin MBA Admissions at McCombs

The Texas McCombs Full-Time MBA uses a three-round rolling process for Fall 2027 entry. GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), GRE (Graduate Record Examination), or the Executive Assessment are accepted, and McCombs is test-optional for candidates with 6+ years of quantitative work experience who apply for a waiver upfront.

RoundApplication DeadlineDecision Release
Round 115 October 202617 December 2026
Round 215 January 202725 March 2027
Round 31 April 20276 May 2027

McCombs MBA Interview Process

Interviews are by invitation only, released on a rolling basis after each round’s application closes. Shortlisted candidates receive a 30-minute virtual or in-person interview with an admissions officer or second-year student. India-based candidates can request a virtual slot without penalty.

McCombs MBA Experience and Fees

The full-time MBA expects 3 to 5 years of post-Bachelor’s work experience, though exceptional candidates with 2 years have been admitted. The Working Professional MBA (Dallas/Houston) requires 5+ years, and the Executive MBA requires 8+ years with senior management exposure. Application fee is USD 200 (INR 19,100) per round; base tuition and detailed funding for Indian students at McCombs sit on the scholarships page.

University of Texas at Austin PhD Admissions

UT Austin funds most PhD admits with full tuition remission plus a 9-month teaching or research assistantship stipend. Deadlines mirror the master’s calendar (1 to 15 December 2026 for Fall 2027 entry) and admits typically come with a firm funding offer letter.

UT Austin PhD Application Steps

  • Identify 2 to 3 potential faculty advisors from the department’s research pages and mention them by name in your statement of purpose.
  • Submit GRE scores (required by most STEM PhDs, optional for humanities and social sciences).
  • Provide 3 letters of recommendation, with at least 2 from research supervisors or thesis advisors.
  • Complete the departmental supplement — this is where writing samples, research proposals, and portfolios go.

UT Austin PhD Funding for Indian Applicants

The standard 2026-27 academic-year PhD stipend at UT Austin ranges from USD 24,000 to USD 34,000 (around INR 22.92 to INR 32.47 Lakhs) depending on the department, with Cockrell Engineering and McCombs on the higher end. Health insurance and tuition are covered separately. External fellowships (Fulbright, Inlaks, JN Tata) can be layered on top.

Note: PhD funding, stipend levels, and interview requirements vary sharply by department. Always confirm on the specific PhD program page before applying.

UT Austin Application Process

The application flow depends on your level. Undergraduate applicants use the Common Application (or ApplyTexas for Spring intake); graduate applicants use MyStatus and GradCAS; MBA applicants use the McCombs portal. All three open the Fall 2027 cycle in August 2026.

UT Austin Step-by-Step Application

  1. Create your portal account. UG applicants create a Common App profile; the Fall 2027 Common App cycle opened 1 August 2026. Grad applicants create a MyStatus account. MBA applicants use the McCombs online form.
  2. Pay the application fee. Pay the application fee of USD 90 (around INR 8,595) on the UT Austin portal. MBA applicants pay USD 200 (around INR 19,100) per round.
  3. Upload transcripts, English test scores (if not waived), and standardised test scores.
  4. Draft essays or statement of purpose — UT Austin requires 3 short-answer essays for freshman UG and a full research statement for PG.
  5. Submit recommender details; recommenders receive an emailed link to upload directly.
  6. Submit the application before the deadline; late submissions are not reviewed.
  7. Track decision on MyStatus (grad) or Status Portal (UG) after submission.

UT Austin Admission Decisions Timeline

  • UG Early Action decisions: released 15 January 2027 for 15 October 2026 applications.
  • UG Regular Decision: released 15 February 2027 for 1 December 2026 applications.
  • UG Transfer: decisions by 15 June 2027.
  • PG decisions: released on a rolling basis from February to April 2027.
  • MBA: per-round schedule shown in the MBA section above.
  • Enrollment deposit: Fall admits must pay by 1 May 2027 to hold the seat.

Insider note: UT Austin releases UG decisions on a fixed date rather than rolling. Do not refresh MyStatus daily in the week before the release — the portal often gets throttled from India during peak load windows.

UT Austin Documents Required

Prepare the paperwork below well before the deadline. Indian applicants typically need certified translations for Class X and XII marksheets, and CBSE or state-board students should have transcripts issued through their school on official letterhead with the principal’s signature.

  • Valid Indian passport, machine-readable, with 6+ months validity beyond intended entry.
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets and passing certificates from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards.
  • Bachelor’s transcript and degree certificate (for PG and MBA applicants), attested by the university registrar.
  • Statement of Purpose or personal essay tailored to UT Austin and the specific program.
  • 2 to 3 Letters of Recommendation on institutional letterhead, submitted by recommenders directly.
  • English proficiency score report (only if waiver does not apply).
  • Standardised test scores: SAT/ACT (UG, optional), GRE (PG STEM), GMAT/GRE (MBA).
  • Updated CV or resume showing academics, projects, publications, work experience.
  • Financial documents for I-20 issuance: bank statement, sponsor affidavit, education loan sanction letter.
  • Passport-size photographs meeting US visa specifications.

University of Texas at Austin Acceptance Rate

UT Austin’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate for the most recent published cycle is 26.6 percent. The rate splits sharply along residency lines because of the Texas 10 percent law: in-state admits sit at 40.97 percent, out-of-state and international applicants sit at just 11.76 percent. Indian applicants compete in the out-of-state pool.

UT Austin Acceptance Rate by Program

The published overall figure hides sharp variance. McCombs BBA, Cockrell Engineering, and Turing Scholars in CS all admit at rates well below 10 percent for international applicants, while College of Liberal Arts and College of Education sit closer to the 25 to 30 percent range. Your admissible profile depends heavily on your first-choice major.

UT Austin Chances for Indian Students

Indian admits typically show Class XII scores of 90 percent+, strong SAT (1450+) or ACT (33+) if submitted, 2 to 3 substantive extracurricular commitments, and one essay that demonstrates depth rather than volume. For PG, a 3.5+ GPA, GRE 320+, and one clear research or project narrative move a file into the shortlist range. Explore full placement outcomes and UT Austin ranking band to benchmark against peer universities.

Reality check: Do not apply to a competitive major with a weak alternate. If your first choice is CS and you list Undecided as alternate, you effectively have one shot. Pair CS with a Natural Sciences major like Mathematics or Physics for a genuine backup.

USA Student Visa for UT Austin Applicants

Admitted Indian students apply for an F-1 student visa through the US Embassy in India after receiving the I-20 form from UT Austin’s Texas Global office. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,425), complete DS-160, book a visa interview slot at one of the US consulates (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad), and carry the I-20, admission letter, financial proof, and academic documents to the interview.

Slot availability during peak Fall intake months (May to July 2027) tightens fast — request the I-20 within 2 weeks of paying the enrollment deposit and book the visa slot the moment SEVIS is registered. F-1 dependents (spouse, minor children) apply on F-2. Entry to the US is permitted up to 30 days before the program start date printed on the I-20.

2026 update: The US State Department has expanded student visa interview capacity for India for the 2027 intake cycle. Emergency appointment slots are being released weekly rather than monthly — check the US Travel Docs portal every Monday for new openings.

Tips and Checklist for UT Austin

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UT Austin over recent Fall intakes. They sequence the work rather than repeat what has been listed above.

  • Register for standardised tests 5 months before deadline: SAT/ACT slots in India fill fast for December test dates targeting Fall applications.
  • Request Bachelor’s transcripts 8 weeks before deadline: Indian universities take 4 to 6 weeks to issue official transcripts; do not leave this for the last week.
  • Draft your alternate major carefully: UT Austin reviews your alternate before rejecting — treat it as a real second application, not a throwaway.
  • Line up recommenders in September: Give professors at least 6 weeks and share your SOP draft so their letter aligns with your positioning.
  • Confirm the English waiver in writing: Even though India is on the exempt list, some programs (CS, McCombs) still ask for scores at the file-review stage.
  • Apply to MBA in Round 1 or Round 2: Round 3 has visibly lower admit rates and near-zero scholarship availability for international candidates.
  • Pay the enrollment deposit within 48 hours of accepting: The I-20 request queue moves in deposit order during May.
  • Book your F-1 interview slot by mid-June: July slots in Delhi and Mumbai typically vanish by end of May for August starts.

UT Austin admissions reward specific, well-sequenced applications more than volume of activities — the university’s admissions officers explicitly value depth in one or two commitments over a broad but shallow profile.

UT Austin is a strong destination for Indian students seeking rigorous programs, industry-tied research, and a well-funded international office, provided the application clears the tight out-of-state cap. Line up your test slots, transcripts, and recommenders on the timeline above, and use the Fall 2027 cycle rather than waiting for Spring, where program availability shrinks sharply.

University of Texas at Austin Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Is UT Austin easy to get into for Indian students?

Ans. No. Indian applicants compete in the out-of-state pool, which admits at 11.76 percent overall. Competitive majors like Computer Science, McCombs BBA, and Cockrell Engineering admit international candidates in the low single digits.

Ques. Do Indian students need TOEFL or IELTS for UT Austin?

Ans. India is on UT Austin’s official English-exempt country list. Indian applicants who completed Class XII and their Bachelor’s in English-medium institutions can skip TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, and Duolingo entirely. McCombs and CS may still recommend a score at the file-review stage.

Ques. When does the UT Austin Fall 2027 application open?

Ans. The Common Application for undergraduate Fall 2027 opened on 1 August 2026. Graduate applications on MyStatus open in August 2026 for the same cycle, with most master’s deadlines between 30 November and 15 December 2026.

Ques. What is UT Austin’s acceptance rate for international students?

Ans. The out-of-state and international acceptance rate at UT Austin is 11.76 percent. The overall rate of 26.6 percent is skewed upward by the Texas 10 percent law, which reserves 90 percent of freshman seats for in-state students.

Ques. Does UT Austin require SAT for Indian freshmen?

Ans. SAT and ACT are test-optional at UT Austin for freshman entry. Indian applicants targeting Cockrell, McCombs, or CS should still submit SAT 1450+ or ACT 33+ scores, since a strong test score materially strengthens a competitive file.

Ques. What documents do Indian applicants need for UT Austin?

Ans. Passport, Class X and XII marksheets, Bachelor’s transcripts (for PG), Statement of Purpose, 2 to 3 Letters of Recommendation, standardised test scores, financial proof for I-20, and passport-size photos. See the Documents Required section above for the full checklist.

Ques. How long does UT Austin take to release admission decisions?

Ans. Freshman Early Action decisions arrive by 15 January 2027; Regular Decision by 15 February 2027; UG Transfer by 15 June 2027. PG programs release decisions on a rolling basis from February to April 2027. MBA decisions follow the McCombs per-round calendar.

Ques. Can I apply to UT Austin McCombs MBA without work experience?

Ans. The Full-Time MBA at McCombs expects 3 to 5 years of post-Bachelor’s work experience, though exceptional candidates with 2 years have been admitted. The Working Professional MBA requires 5+ years and the Executive MBA requires 8+ years. Freshers should not apply.

Ques. Does UT Austin offer conditional admission for Indian students?

Ans. UT Austin does not offer conditional or pathway admission for international students. All admits must meet full academic and English requirements at the point of application; there is no pre-master’s or bridge track.
