For Fall 2027, deadlines generally fall between December 2026 and January 2027, depending on the department. 1. Create a Common Application account at commonapp.org. The 2026-27 Common App cycle opened on 1 August 2026. Add Boston University to your list of colleges.
  2. Pay the application fee of USD 80 (₹7,628) on the Common Application portal at submission.
  3. Draft the Common App personal statement and the Boston University supplemental essay. Both are required.
  4. Request one teacher evaluation and a school counselor recommendation through the Common App School Report form.
  5. Upload official Class XII transcripts with predicted results plus first-marking-period grades for ED, or first-semester grades for RD.
  6. Submit English proficiency scores — IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo — using BU institution code 3087 for TOEFL score reporting.
  7. File the CSS Profile and FAFSA if you are applying for need-based aid, by the same deadline as the application.
  8. Await decision — ED I decisions release on 15 December 2026, ED II on 9 February 2027, and Regular Decision on 28 March 2027.
  9. Post enrollment deposit — for RD this is due by 1 May 2027; ED I deposits are due by mid-January 2027.

Graduate applicants apply through their school-specific portals at Boston University. Questrom MBA applicants use the Questrom portal, while engineering and arts and sciences applicants follow their respective school instructions. Offer deadlines and deferral policies vary by programme, so check the details in your admission letter.

Boston University Acceptance Rate Trends

Boston University’s undergraduate acceptance rate has declined as application numbers have increased, exceeding 76,000 applications for the Fall 2025 first-year class. The overall undergraduate acceptance rate was 11.1%, with approximately 3,450 students enrolling. Graduate admissions vary by programme, with selectivity differing across schools and fields. Applicants should check programme-specific admission statistics rather than rely on a university-wide graduate acceptance rate.

Insider note: ED I applications from Indian students with predicted 92 percent plus a considered essay have historically seen admit rates near double the RD pool, but ED is binding — commit only if BU is your firm first choice.

USA F-1 Student Visa Process for Indian Students

Indian students admitted to Boston University must apply for an F-1 student visa after receiving their Form I-20. BU issues the I-20 after students meet its enrollment and financial documentation requirements; processing times can vary. Applicants must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,373), complete the DS-160 form, and pay the USD 185 visa application fee (INR 17,640) before scheduling an interview.

Carry your Form I-20, DS-160 confirmation, valid passport, admission letter, tuition payment receipt and financial documents to the visa interview. After arriving in Boston, follow BU’s instructions for reporting to the International Students and Scholars Office and completing orientation. F-1 students may generally work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term, subject to visa rules. Eligible graduates can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), with qualifying STEM degree holders potentially eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension beyond the initial 12 months.

2026 update: Indian students planning to begin studies in Fall 2027 should monitor the official US visa appointment portal for student visa slot availability. Appointment dates and additional slot releases can change, so book an interview as early as possible once eligible and follow official updates to avoid delays close to the programme start date.

Students targeting Fall 2027 should check programme-specific application deadlines and submit scholarship applications by the relevant priority dates. Apply through Early Decision I only if BU is your clear first choice and you are prepared to commit if admitted.

  • Students need to show funds, be it their own—father, mother or any family member who is sponsoring them—or via a bank loan or any of the other organisations. One needs to show around $100,000 approx. in funds, which include the tuition and living expenses.

Overview

In a nutshell, the admission process consists of IELTS / GRE --> Wes Course Evaluation --> Application --> Results. Here my IELTS, undergrad grades and strong application were the key things for my selection to Boston University. I started quite early to build my strong research-oriented profile for my master's in computer science. I come from a Mechanical Engineering background and did my research in computer vision, Predictive maintenance and implementing computer vision Algorithms in the Manufacturing sector. I presented my 1st research paper at the IIT BHU international conference in 2023 and submitted 2 more papers in international journals. We designed and built a Hexapod Robot with an innovation to resist the impact, Got selected for the Gujarat Council of Science and Technology and filed a patent for the design. I also hold one more patent with my professor during my undergrad for designing a welding machine for micro-welding. I highlighted all these in my resume during my application.
