University at Buffalo SUNY admissions run on a rolling model for graduate programs, with the SUNY-wide graduate school and the Common App / ApplySUNY portals handling most Indian applicants. Undergraduate entry expects roughly Class XII at 83 percent, and graduate entry expects a four-year Bachelor’s with about 60 percent (3.0 GPA equivalent).
- Fall 2027 Early Action: undergraduate priority deadline is 1 November 2026, with rolling review continuing until seats fill
- Base UG tuition: USD 29,070 (around INR 27.81 Lakhs) per year, plus a USD 50 (INR 4,784) undergraduate application fee and USD 100 (INR 9,568) fee for most graduate and MBA programs
- English floor: UG IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 70; PG IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 — with Class XII at 83 percent for UG and a Bachelor’s carrying 3.0 GPA (around 60 percent) for PG
- Overall institutional acceptance rate estimated at around 80 percent, based on third-party admissions data; UB does not publish an official institutional figure
Indian applicants cluster around MS Computer Science and Engineering, MS Engineering Science (Data Science), MS Business Analytics, and the STEM-designated MBA at the University at Buffalo. Alumni sentiment across the North Campus engineering and School of Management programs is broadly positive, with strong Indian representation on graduate assistantships.

Indian applicants targeting engineering or business PG programs at the University at Buffalo SUNY should treat December 2026 to mid-January 2027 as the practical planning window. MBA Round 3 on 15 March 2027 is the last window that reliably fits the F-1 visa timeline for an August 2027 arrival.
Planning note: UB accepts Spring 2027 undergraduate applications, but Indian students typically pick Fall for full-year scholarships and stronger cohort access.
University at Buffalo SUNY Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility combines academic thresholds with an English proficiency floor. UB reads Indian percentages against a 4.0 scale — a Class XII score of 83 percent maps to the 3.0 (B) minimum. Graduate programs read Indian Bachelor’s marks against the same 3.0 GPA line, which is roughly a first-class 60 percent.
Undergraduate Eligibility at the University at Buffalo
- Academic minimum: Class XII at around 83 percent (3.0 GPA equivalent on UB’s 4.0 scale)
- Boards accepted: CBSE, ICSE, and recognised state boards, with subject-wise mark sheets required
- Prerequisite subjects: Mathematics studied through Class XII for engineering and business majors
- English: IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL iBT 70, PTE Academic 50, or Duolingo English Test 105
Graduate Eligibility at the University at Buffalo
- Academic minimum: Four-year Bachelor’s with a 3.0 GPA (about 60 percent) from a recognised institution
- English: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE Academic 55, Duolingo 120, or Cambridge CPE/CAE 185
- Test policy: GRE and GMAT are optional for most MS programs; scores strengthen borderline applications
- Score reports must be dated within two years of application review, and IELTS/TOEFL must be sent directly by the testing agency
English Waivers for Indian Applicants at UB
UB’s waiver list covers citizens of Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Guam, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, and the UK who were educated entirely in English. Indian passport holders do not qualify for the country-based waiver, and UB does not accept Indian medium-of-instruction (MOI) letters in place of a test score. Transfer applicants already at a US college can waive the requirement by completing one term of college English composition with a B or better plus a 3.0 GPA.
Insider note: Book the IELTS or TOEFL as early as Class XII results are declared — score-report dispatch to UB Institution Code 2925 (TOEFL) adds 2 to 3 weeks to the application timeline.
University at Buffalo SUNY PG Programs and English Scores
Graduate PG entry is program-driven at the University at Buffalo. Base non-resident graduate tuition sits at USD 29,830 (around INR 28.55 Lakhs) for the 2026-27 academic year, and a full course-wise tuition by course breakdown is on the Programs page. Program pages, not the graduate school, hold the definitive floor for eligibility and English scores.

UB reviews the full transcript — English, mathematics, and two science subjects at Class XII are treated as the core academic profile for STEM majors. Indian applicants applying through the Common Application also complete the SUNY member questions and select "University at Buffalo".
University at Buffalo SUNY MBA Admissions Rounds
The UB School of Management’s Full-Time MBA offers STEM and non-STEM tracks and runs on a five-round cycle. The STEM designation is decisive for Indian applicants — F-1 visa holders on the STEM MBA get an additional 24 months of Optional Practical Training after the standard 12-month OPT.

UB MBA Requirements and Fee
- Application fee: USD 100 (INR 9,568)
- Test policy: Test-optional — GMAT or GRE strengthens the file, especially for scholarship consideration
- English: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79 minimum
- Intake: Fall admission only; Round 2 (15 January 2027) is the deadline for scholarship, assistantship, and fellowship review
- Rounds 4 and 5 are typically not viable for Indian students due to F-1 visa lead time
Indian applicants who need scholarship consideration must have all materials in by 15 January 2027. Round 3 on 15 March 2027 is the final workable window for Fall 2027 arrival — the UB admissions team confirms decisions by 15 April, giving roughly 12 weeks for I-20 issuance and F-1 visa interview.
Reality check: UB’s MBA is fall-only. Applicants missing 15 March 2027 should plan for Fall 2028 rather than switching to Spring, as the Spring MBA route does not exist.
UB Application Process for Indian Students
The University at Buffalo application flow is portal-driven and mostly linear. Steps below apply to both UG and PG paths, with the portal choice being the main split.
- Pick the portal. UG applicants file through the Common Application (opened 31 July 2026 for the 2026-27 cycle), ApplySUNY, or Coalition for College. PG applicants file through the UB Graduate Application System, department-by-department.
- Pay the application fee of USD 50 (INR 4,784) for UG or USD 100 (INR 9,568) for PG on the application portal at submission.
- Upload academic records — mark sheets and provisional certificates for Class X, XII, and any Bachelor’s semesters, plus an English translation if the original is not in English.
- Submit English scores. TOEFL scores go directly from ETS using Institution Code 2925; IELTS reports go by post or e-TRF.
- Add supporting documents — statement of purpose, letters of recommendation (one for MS, two to three for PhD), and a resume.
- Watch the portal for verification requests. Graduate departments make admissions decisions independently, and offers roll out in batches rather than one deadline.
Planning note: Complete the Common App core essay before targeting UB — the same essay serves 20 US universities, so drafting it once is the most efficient prep task.
University at Buffalo Admission Decisions Timeline
UB decisions are staggered by portal and program. Undergraduate Early Action applicants hear back by mid-December, while graduate decisions arrive on a rolling basis across the winter and early spring.
- UG Early Action (1 November 2026): decisions by mid-December 2026
- UG Honors College (15 December 2026): decisions by early February 2027
- UG Regular Decision (1 February 2027): decisions on a rolling basis until mid-April 2027
- MS Computer Science and Engineering: decisions issued January to March 2027 for a 31 December 2026 file
- MBA: each round has a fixed decision date — Round 1 by 1 December 2026, Round 2 by 1 March 2027
- Enrolment deposit: USD 250 (INR 23,920) for UG, due by 1 May 2027 or 10 days after acceptance, whichever is later
Admitted students receive a conditional or unconditional offer letter followed by the I-20 form once the financial documentation is verified — this triggers the F-1 visa appointment.
UB Documents Required Checklist
Documents are paperwork only — academic thresholds and English score minimums live in the Eligibility section above. Indian applicants should assemble the following before opening the portal.
- Valid passport — biographical page scan, minimum six months’ validity beyond intended arrival
- Class X and Class XII mark sheets and passing certificates
- Bachelor’s transcripts (for PG applicants) — official, semester-wise, with degree certificate or provisional
- Statement of purpose — typically 500 to 1,000 words; UB Pharmacy caps SOP at 500 words
- Letters of recommendation — one for MS, two for the Pharmaceutical Sciences MS, three for PhD; academic evaluators preferred
- Resume / CV — capturing academic projects, internships, publications, and any work experience
- Official English test score report (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo)
- Financial documentation — bank statements and affidavits sufficient to cover the first year, needed for the I-20
- Passport-size photographs as per US student visa specifications
- GRE or GMAT score report, if submitting to strengthen a borderline application
Documents in a language other than English require a certified English translation. Departments occasionally ask for additional artifacts — for instance, the MS Pharmaceutical Sciences file adds a research interests statement.
University at Buffalo Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
UB does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party admissions data places the overall figure at around 80 percent, with international undergraduate admits estimated near 94 percent — the university sits on the less-selective side of the AAU membership range. Check the ranking band for how UB compares against other US public research universities.
What the Rate Means for Indian Applicants
An 80 percent institutional rate does not translate uniformly across programs. Engineering PG admits into the CS department carry a tighter profile — the average admitted MS Computer Science and Engineering student has a 3.4 GPA on a 4.0 scale, roughly 76 to 80 percent in Indian terms. STEM MS admissions in Data Science, Business Analytics, and MIS run competitively as Indian applicant volume has grown.
Buffalo Selectivity by Level
Undergraduate international admits are the least selective slice. Graduate STEM programs at the University at Buffalo run tighter, and the MBA is the most selective, particularly for scholarship consideration through Round 2.
Insider note: A profile above 3.0 GPA with 1 to 2 years of relevant work experience or a research publication lifts a UB STEM MS file well above the threshold — GRE 315+ is not required but does add weight.
USA F-1 Student Visa Process for University at Buffalo SUNY Applicants
Indian students admitted to UB apply for the F-1 student visa — the standard non-immigrant visa for full-time academic study in the United States. The process begins after UB issues Form I-20 based on your admission letter and verified financial documents.
Applicants pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,488), complete the DS-160 online non-immigrant visa application, and pay the MRV visa application fee of USD 185 (INR 17,701). Visa interviews are held at the US embassy in New Delhi or consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad — book the earliest available slot after receiving the I-20. Consular officers assess academic intent, financial capacity, and ties to India; carry the I-20, admission letter, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation, passport, financial statements, and academic records. On arrival, students complete the mandatory ISSS check-in at the North Campus within the first two weeks of the semester.
2026 update: Indian students are advised to schedule visa interviews at least 90 days before their program start date, given the current Chennai and Hyderabad wait times of six to eight weeks.
Tips and Application Checklist for University at Buffalo SUNY
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at the University at Buffalo. They cover timing and sequencing — document-content requirements live in the Documents section above.
- Book IELTS or TOEFL by August 2026 for Fall 2027 entry so scores arrive at UB before rolling PG review begins in December
- Request academic transcripts 6 to 8 weeks before submission — Indian university registrars typically take longer than the UB portal timeline assumes
- File the Common App early in August 2026 to give UB counsellors time to route your SUNY member questions
- Submit MBA Round 2 by 15 January 2027 to enter the scholarship, assistantship, and fellowship pool
- Line up two letters of recommendation by October 2026 — Indian faculty schedules tighten around semester end
- Keep financial documents updated to within 30 days — UB rejects bank statements older than a month for I-20 issuance
- Schedule the F-1 visa slot immediately after receiving the I-20, targeting 12 weeks before the August start
- Confirm the graduate department contact — decisions are decentralised, and reminders help move rolling files
Ask the international admissions office for guidance if any deadline lands within a week of a document delay — UB is known to grant short extensions where the file is otherwise complete.
University at Buffalo SUNY admissions reward a well-timed file over a last-minute one. Lock the primary intake (Fall 2027) as your target, treat the 31 December 2026 MS CS window and the 15 January 2027 MBA scholarship round as the two hard anchors, and keep an eye on rolling closures across other MS programs.
University at Buffalo SUNY Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the main intake at the University at Buffalo for Indian students?

Ans. Base undergraduate tuition is USD 29,070 (around INR 27.81 Lakhs) per year, and base non-resident graduate tuition is USD 29,830 (around INR 28.55 Lakhs) per year. Cost of attendance, deposits, and living costs sit on the Fees page.
Ques. Is the MBA at University at Buffalo SUNY STEM-designated?
Ans. Yes. UB’s Full-Time MBA offers STEM and non-STEM tracks. Choosing the STEM path gives F-1 visa holders an additional 24 months of OPT beyond the standard 12 months.
Ques. What is the acceptance rate for University at Buffalo SUNY?
Ans. UB does not publish an official institutional rate. Third-party estimates put the overall acceptance rate at around 80 percent, based on public admissions data. Graduate STEM programs run tighter than the institutional figure suggests.
Ques. Can Indian applicants apply directly through ApplySUNY instead of Common App?
Ans. Yes. UB treats ApplySUNY, Common Application, and Coalition for College equally — no preference between platforms. Pick whichever you find easiest to complete.
Ques. When should Indian students submit financial documents for the I-20?
Ans. Immediately after admission. UB rejects bank statements older than 30 days at the point of I-20 review, so refresh them just before uploading. Faster documentation shortens the F-1 visa timeline.

Dislikes
- Cold weather
- In campus living a bit expensive for students from India.
- Buffalo as a city didn't have a lot of corporate opportunities.
Scholarship
- I didn't receive any scholarship.
- Yes, a few of my batchmates received financial scholarships. Mostly they were PhD students. They received a stipend. Also, few candidates received research assistant and teaching assistant roles. They would get $800-1200$ for a month.
- On average, there were 10% of candidates who received scholarships. There were on-campus jobs in various departments, not only the computer science department. Developing websites and back-ends for quite a few departments like geology, history and economics.

- Infrastructure and facilities like library and labs
- They keep organising outing free of cost for students
- On campus job opportunities are good you easily get one and manage your expenses
Dislikes
- Extreme winter temprature goes to -30
- Classes are too far from the student town takes 30 minutes to visit class
- Course is only 1.5 year so curriculum is really heavy
Likes
- Maintenance is good. Few subjects were good as part of my curriculum.
Dislikes
- There could have been more assistance in job search for international students or placement opportunities.
- People who took 11 months course curriculum struggle to get on campus jobs as there are very little opportunities for them.
- The fees is way to high for the value provided.
Likes
- Computer Science course Curriculum. When I was there it was studying, the course structure was different which was very good. We got to choose the course which we planned to take.
- The campus is very peaceful with a lake, sunset view.
- The university has a strong alumni network who'd like to help every new joiner.
Dislikes
- The course curriculum is very hard.
- Professors show no mercy. They don't care if you will get A grade if you score 0.2 marks more.
- We gotta work very hard for courses that are lease applied in our daily work life.
Scholarship
- UB's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers scholarships for exceptional academic performance.
- Opportunities for teaching or research assistantships are available, providing stipends and tuition waivers for a few students (not most of them, only a few of them). For the application process, we can apply through the UB Scholarship Portal using our UBIT credentials. We have grader, RA, and TA, which are positions students can get into by talking to professors and showcasing their skills.

Dislikes
- "Not much Scholorships and grants availale for International students Even the available ones are not easy to find and apply."
Likes
- I really liked the infrastructure of the college. Specially some classes of CS in fall semester will be held in NSC building, which is recently constructed with latest amenities and welcoming classrooms.
- Access to UB's own box and onedrive storage including microsoft 365 suite. Very easy to share work while working in teams. Recording demo and presentation using stream is also helpful and can be shared directly within organization.
- Very good research activities on campus where many professor has 50+ h-index for their publications. So, students can reach out to them directly if they are interested in such opportunity.
Dislikes
- Some class indirectly require attendance as a part of bonus inclass activities.
- Nearby areas will give countryside vibe, rather then city vibe. Buffalo winters are harsh and it gets frustrating some times to live in below 0 degree celcius from November to March
- Relatively less celebration of Indian festival unlike other universities, where Diwali, Holi, Navratri celebrated widely and on a large scale.
Scholarship
- There is a separate scholarship portal where we can apply for scholarships, but chances are very low as the fees themselves are very low. I don't receive any scholarship in my admit. I have applied for one while applying and also after the first semester.
- Generally, the option is to be a TA or RA with a professor for four hourly wages but Scholarship opportunities are not that many. As far as I know, none of the students in my batch received any scholarship, as it is very hard. From my end I don't know the AVG of how many students and how much amount.

Likes
- It had a vibrant atmosphere and there were always college activities going on
- Engaging for international students and Indian festivals
- Environment friendly and people always caring and helpful
Dislikes
- The coursework is kinda dry from a masters perspective
- The professors are solely focused on their own stuff and sometimes neglect classes with large students
- The playing area is often crowded that is good and bad at the same time
Scholarship
- In this university scholarships and grants are available only to university phd students.
- Masters students do not receive aid or grants. No batchmates of mine received scholarship grants and this is because this university only funds phd students. But one particular student required financial aid therefore the university provided a scholarship for that student in the form of financial help

- On-campus jobs are quite competitive, it is almost impossible to get one in the first semester.
Scholarship
