Harvard University's acceptance rate is 4.2% (derived from official figures: 2,003 admitted of 47,893 applicants, Common Data Set 2025-26). Harvard is a private research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, ranked 5th in the QS World University Rankings 2027.

  • Acceptance rate: 4.2% (derived from Common Data Set 2025-26, first-year undergraduates)
  • Primary intake: Fall 2027
  • UG requirement: Class 12 with predicted or final marks, SAT or ACT, no published cutoff
  • PG requirement: Bachelor's degree plus the school's own tests, for example, GMAT or GRE for the MBA
  • Tuition: USD 62,226 (INR 59.11 Lakhs) for 2026-27

Indian applicants target the fall 2027 intake, with Restrictive Early Action due on 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 1 January 2027. Undergraduates need Class 12 results with an SAT or ACT score, and graduate entry runs through each school's own process.

Note: All INR figures used in the article is USD 1 = INR 95.00 as of 26 October 2026.

Harvard University Acceptance Rate 2027

Harvard admitted 4.2% of first-year applicants for Fall 2025, based on 2,003 admits from 47,893 applications in its 2025–26 Common Data Set. This rate covers domestic and international undergraduate applicants together; Harvard does not publish separate acceptance rates for Indian students, international applicants or graduate programmes.

Harvard reports application and admission figures in Section C1 of its Common Data Set rather than stating an acceptance rate directly. The derived rate rose from 3.5% to 4.2% across the three latest editions as applications fell by 9,044.

Entry year (CDS edition) Applications Admitted Enrolled Acceptance rate (derived)
Fall 2025 (CDS 2025-26) 47,893 2,003 1,675 4.2%
Fall 2024 (CDS 2024-25) 54,008 1,970 1,647 3.6%
Fall 2023 (CDS 2023-24) 56,937 1,965 1,645 3.5%

Reality check: Roughly one applicant in 24 was admitted for fall 2025, and the pool includes the strongest school-leavers from every country, so an Indian applicant competes on the same 4.2% (derived) odds as everyone else.

Harvard Acceptance Rate by Level and Programme

Harvard does not publish acceptance rates by programme, major or nationality. The Common Data Set reports one first-year acceptance rate for Harvard College, which admits students to the college rather than individual courses. Therefore, separate acceptance rates for Computer Science or Economics are not available.

Graduate schools report application numbers but do not always disclose admission totals. Harvard Business School received 9,409 applications for its MBA Class of 2027, which has 943 students, while Harvard Griffin GSAS received 25,239 applications in 2024. These figures cannot be used to calculate acceptance rates because the number of admitted applicants is not provided.

Key insight: The 4.2% (derived) first-year rate is the only hard number Harvard's own documents support, so treat any programme-level rate quoted elsewhere as unofficial.

Is Harvard Hard to Get Into for Indian Students

Harvard enrolled 1,675 first-year students from 47,893 applicants in Fall 2025, an overall acceptance rate of around 4.2%. This figure covers all applicants, and Harvard does not publish a separate acceptance rate for Indian or international students.

Harvard’s admissions process is need-blind for all applicants, so applying for financial aid does not affect admission chances. The university also sets no fixed Class 12 marks or test-score cutoff, making a strong academic record important but not a guarantee of admission.

Note: Peer rates are not shown here because no other university's current Common Data Set was verified in this cycle, and a comparison without that check would not hold up.

Harvard University Intakes and Deadlines 2027

Harvard admits first-years for the fall intake only, with two application rounds for fall 2027 entry.

Fall 2027 Undergraduate Restrictive Early Action notification Mid-December 2026 Official

Note: A deferred early applicant moves into the Regular Decision pool automatically, so the 1 November round gives two reviews for one application.

Harvard Fees and Scholarships for Indian Students 2027

Harvard's published cost of attendance for 2026-27 bills USD 91,634 (INR 87.05 Lakhs) before aid. The 2027-28 figure was not yet published on 26 October 2026.

Item (2026-27, undergraduate) Annual cost (USD) Annual cost (INR)
Tuition USD 62,226 INR 59.11 Lakhs
Fees, housing and food USD 29,408 INR 27.94 Lakhs
Total billed cost USD 91,634 INR 87.05 Lakhs

Harvard gives need-based aid only, with no merit scholarships. International students are eligible for the same aid as US students, and families with annual income below USD 100,000 (INR 95.00 Lakhs) pay nothing towards the billed cost.

Insider note: Because aid is need-based and need-blind, an Indian family earning under USD 100,000 (INR 95.00 Lakhs) should apply regardless of cost, since the aid decision cannot hurt the admission decision.

How to Improve Your Chances at Harvard

Every lever below comes from Harvard's own application pages or its Common Data Set.

  • Take the SAT or ACT, since 79% of enrolled first-years submitted the SAT in fall 2025.
  • Aim at the ACT middle range of 33 to 35 or the equivalent SAT band.
  • Apply by 1 November 2026 under Restrictive Early Action to get a deferral safety net.
  • Choose two recommenders from different subjects who can write with specifics.
  • Answer all five 150-word short-answer questions with concrete examples.
  • Arrange a predicted-marks letter from the school for the midyear report.
Insider note: Harvard states it uses no score cutoffs, so a 1,500 SAT does not fail an application by itself, and a 1,580 does not carry it.

Harvard’s 4.2% acceptance rate, based on the 2025–26 Common Data Set, makes admission highly competitive, regardless of Class 12 marks. Indian applicants should aim for SAT or ACT scores within Harvard’s enrolled-student range and arrange detailed teacher recommendations and predicted marks from their school. The Restrictive Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026, with the USD 95 (INR 9,025) application fee waived for eligible students.

FAQs
