[Source: IPEDS Federal Data via US News]

Individual graduate programmes screen more tightly than the institutional pool. The MBA reports a 39% acceptance rate against 54 applicants in the most recent reporting cycle.

Reality check: An 87% institutional rate does not mean easy admission for STEM master’s tracks. Indian applicants targeting MS Computer Science or MS Business Analytics should still submit CGPA 7.0/10 plus and demonstrate a coding portfolio or analytics internship to clear internal departmental review.

University of Northern Iowa Rankings 2027

University of Northern Iowa rankings are strongest in US News regional tables, where UNI holds a top-10 slot in the Midwest and a #2 finish among top public schools in the region. UNI does not appear in QS World or THE World tables, which favour research-intensive R1 institutions rather than mid-sized regional publics; benchmark against comparable public colleges in USA for a fairer read.

UNI holds twelve consecutive years at the #2 spot for Best Regional Public Universities Midwest by US News. The Princeton Review has also named UNI a Best in the Midwest college for the last two decades.

Key insight: An unranked QS position does not affect F-1 visa approval or standard OPT eligibility. Indian graduates applying to US employers or H-1B sponsors care more about specific programme accreditation, which UNI holds through the AACSB for business and the Higher Learning Commission institution-wide.

  • First-destination rate: 98% within six months of graduation
  • Median starting salary (bachelor’s): $53,000 (₹50.17 Lakh); early-career average $55,177 (₹52.23 Lakh)
  • Highest-paying UG majors: Construction Management $61,000 (₹57.74 Lakh); Computer Science $59,000 (₹55.85 Lakh); Industrial Production Technology $58,900 (₹55.76 Lakh)

University of Northern Iowa vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants weighing University of Northern Iowa typically look at other Midwest public universities offering similar cost profiles and MBA plus MS options. The peer set below covers Iowa in-state alternatives and one out-of-state comparator.

UNI’s edge over the peer set is the automatic Iowa Partner State Award for Indian nationals plus a total sticker cost that comes in $4,000 to $12,000 lower than the University of Iowa and Iowa State each year. It trails those two peers on QS-visible research output.

Key insight: Indian applicants targeting a business or education career pick UNI for cost efficiency and Iowa employer access. Those chasing research-heavy STEM or a QS-ranked brand should apply to University of Iowa or Iowa State instead.

The University of Northern Iowa suits Indian applicants who prioritise total cost, high acceptance odds and reliable Midwest placement over a top-100 research brand. A four-year UG budget lands around ₹1.45 crore total, while a two-year PG budget stays under ₹75 Lakh; both are recoverable against a median starting salary of $53,000. The Iowa Partner State Award is the single strongest India-specific advantage, cutting $4,000 off tuition each year for every admitted Indian applicant with no separate paperwork.

UNI is not the right fit for applicants targeting QS-ranked STEM branding or a large PhD research ecosystem. Those candidates should consider the University of Iowa or Iowa State, both R1 research universities within two hours of Cedar Falls that carry stronger global rankings but come with 40% higher annual fees.

University of Northern Iowa FAQs

Ques. Can Indian students apply to the University of Northern Iowa without SAT or ACT scores?

Ans. Yes. UNI reviews applications on a test-optional basis, so Indian applicants can submit Class 12 results, English proficiency scores and academic transcripts without ACT or SAT scores. Test-optional applicants must show a Class 12 average around 70% or higher to remain competitive for automatic scholarships. Submitting an ACT of 20 or SAT EBRW of 480 is also one of the accepted routes to prove English proficiency.

Ques. Does UNI accept the Duolingo English Test for undergraduate admission?

Ans. Yes. The University of Northern Iowa accepts the Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 105 for full undergraduate admission and 95 for entry to the English Pathway Program. Graduate applicants must meet department-specific bands. UNI treats Duolingo as a valid substitute for TOEFL or IELTS across most programmes, which is useful for Indian applicants who cannot access a test centre nearby.

Ques. What is the UNI application fee for Indian international applicants?

Ans. UNI charges Indian applicants a non-refundable application fee of $50 for undergraduate programmes and $75 for graduate programmes. Payment can be made through credit card, bank draft, money order or Flywire, which many Indian families use to transfer INR directly from home banks to UNI. The fee is charged in USD and cannot be waived under standard institutional policy.

Ques. Can Indian students work on campus while studying at the University of Northern Iowa?

Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders at UNI can work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during the Fall and Spring terms and full-time during official breaks. On-campus roles include library assistant, dining services and departmental research aide positions. Off-campus work needs prior authorisation from the Office of International Engagement and is not permitted in the first academic year.

Ques. What is the English Pathway Program at the University of Northern Iowa?

Ans. The English Pathway Program at UNI is a conditional-admission route for Indian applicants who fall short of full English score minimums but meet the academic threshold. Students take the Culture and Intensive English Program alongside a limited course load until they clear the required TOEFL 79, IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 105 threshold. They then transition into full degree study without reapplying.

Ques. Does UNI require GRE or GMAT for graduate admissions?

Ans. GRE and GMAT requirements at UNI vary by department. Most master’s programmes now review applications without the GRE, and the MBA follows a holistic review that can waive GMAT for candidates with 3.0 GPA and relevant work experience. Indian applicants should confirm the specific requirement on their target department’s page before booking a test slot to avoid unnecessary expense.

Ques. Can Indian students bring dependents on an F-2 visa at the University of Northern Iowa?

Ans. Yes. The University of Northern Iowa’s Office of International Engagement issues DS-2019 and I-20 documents that allow F-1 students to invite a spouse or unmarried child under 21 on an F-2 dependent visa. Applicants must show additional funds of $5,000 per dependent per year in bank statements. The I-20 update request must be mailed before the visa interview at the US consulate.

Ques. Does UNI accept education-loan disbursements from Indian banks?

Ans. Yes. UNI accepts loan disbursements from major Indian banks such as SBI, HDFC Credila, Bank of Baroda and Axis Bank through wire transfer or Flywire. The financial-aid office issues cost-of-attendance letters that Indian banks accept as loan proof. Disbursements can be split across semesters to match tuition billing, which reduces interest exposure during the study period.

Overview

Cost, location, education. I applied to two colleges. The application fee was probably like $80. I applied online to transfer from a community college and went on a visit to the college. I really liked it and got accepted soon after.

Fees

$8000 I think. My parents supported me so I didn't use financial aid.

Overview

It had a home-like feel that made me feel welcomed. People were always there to answer my questions and made me feel like they wanted me. It also had classes always taught by professors, not TAs and I liked that classes were smaller.

Fees

It is less than $4000 for tuition but we have about $1000 in extras charges and an additional charge for being in the business college
