University of Chicago Eligibility for Indian Applicants
Eligibility at the University of Chicago is split by level. Undergraduate entry is holistic and looks at academic record, essays, activities, and (optionally) test scores. Graduate entry is program-specific and hinges on your Bachelor’s discipline, GPA, and English proficiency. Every applicant must clear the same English-language bar or qualify for a waiver.
- UG academic floor: Class XII at around 90 percent from CBSE, ICSE, or a state board; strong subject alignment with the intended major.
- PG academic floor: Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university with a strong GPA (typically 3.0 out of 4.0, or around 75 percent in Class XII grade terms).
- Standardised tests: UChicago’s College is test-optional; graduate programs like Booth, MPCS, and Financial Mathematics may accept or require GMAT or GRE.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS Academic 7.0 for the College; graduate programs range from TOEFL 90 to 104 depending on division.
The University of Chicago Graduate Division only accepts TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic as proof of English proficiency. Duolingo, PTE, and Cambridge tests are not accepted for graduate applicants. The College also accepts the Duolingo English Test for undergraduate applicants.
University of Chicago IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
The University of Chicago publishes two clear waiver routes on its official English language requirements page. Indian applicants who studied full-time in an English-medium institution abroad or grew up with English as their home language may qualify.
- Primary Language Waiver: attest that English has been the primary language of communication and schooling since childhood.
- Education Waiver: complete at least one full academic year in the last ten years as a full-time degree-seeking student at an accredited English-medium institution in an approved country (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and 13 others).
- Studying at an Indian English-medium school or college does not qualify for the Education Waiver because India is not on the approved list.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Chicago page for your chosen program before applying.
University of Chicago PG Programs and English Scores

University of Chicago Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
The University of Chicago’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate is around 4.57 percent, placing it among the most selective universities in the United States. Graduate acceptance varies sharply by program.
University of Chicago UG Acceptance Rate Context
The 4.57 percent figure covers all UG applicants for the most recent published cycle. Indian applicants face a similar or slightly steeper bar because the international pool is highly self-selected. Strong Class XII scores (well above 90 percent), a distinctive essay, and one or two standout activities are typical of admitted Indian students.
University of Chicago PG Acceptance Rate Estimates
Booth MBA acceptance is estimated at 25 to 30 percent, MPCS at 40 to 50 percent (broader access for career-changers), and Social Sciences PhD programs at under 10 percent. The University of Chicago does not publish an official program-by-program acceptance figure.
Insider note: UChicago has trended more selective over the past five years and the trend is now stabilising rather than tightening further. Compare its ranking band against Ivy peers before you set a shortlist.
USA F-1 Student Visa for University of Chicago Admits
Indian students admitted to the University of Chicago need an F-1 student visa to enter the United States. The University of Chicago’s Office of International Affairs issues the I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) once you accept your offer and submit financial documentation. STEM-designated programs qualify for the 36-month OPT (12 months plus 24-month STEM extension) after graduation.
After receiving the I-20, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (₹33,075), complete the DS-160 online, pay the MRV visa fee of $185 (₹17,483), and book your visa interview at the US embassy in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad. Financial proof should cover tuition plus living costs for the first year. Full step-by-step guidance sits in the US F-1 student visa guide.
2026 update: US embassy interview wait times for Indian students have shortened to two to six weeks in most cities as of September 2026. Book slots in May or June for a Fall intake to avoid September crunch.
Tips and Checklist for University of Chicago Admissions
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at the University of Chicago and the University’s published guidance. Combine both to sequence your work.
- Start supplements early: the UChicago essay prompts are the single hardest part of the College application; draft in August, refine through October.
- Request transcripts eight weeks out: Indian boards can take four to six weeks to issue official transcripts and attestation.
- Register for TOEFL or IELTS by August: allow two attempts before the November deadline if you are borderline on the minimum.
- Book LOR conversations in September: Indian counsellors and professors are often unfamiliar with the Common App recommender flow, so brief them.
- Complete the CSS Profile alongside the application: the University of Chicago meets full demonstrated need for admitted international students who file the CSS Profile.
- Target Round 2 for Booth MBA: most Indian admits enter through Round 2; Round 3 is thin on scholarships and visa timing gets tight.
- Save receipts for the SEVIS and MRV fees: both are needed at the embassy interview.
- Compare the cost of attendance with living costs: Chicago’s living costs are on the higher side; see the USA cost of living guide for planning numbers.
Indian applicants who plan around the Fall 2027 cycle at the University of Chicago should lock the Common App early, target Early Action or Round 1 or Round 2 for graduate programs, and treat the essay supplements as the differentiator. With a 4.57 percent overall acceptance rate, preparation depth matters more than the number of applications sent.

- It is a comparatively safe university to get in - especially if you have previous professional experience. I had 3 years of work experience as a Software Engineer back in India and hence, I like the idea of a professional masters rather than a Thesis Based one. As mentioned before, the CS program here is specifically designed for people who come from non-CS backgrounds and hence, I found it to be best suited to my needs.
- University of Chicago is one of the oldest and most popular universities in the United States. It is well known for its physical sciences, computer science, management (Booth School) and public-policy programs.
- It is known for a lot of inter-disciplinary programs and research - and especially for computer science - it is a well-known university and one of the rare few, which gives non-CS students an opportunity to pursue Masters in Computer Science.
Dislikes
- The professional masters programs can be quite heavy on the pocket since it is a private school. Teaching assistant roles are offered to students but these roles are very few and they provide a stipend but do not waive off part of your tuition fees (which many other universities in US do).
Overview
University of Chicago has been a dream come true for me since I always wanted to do a masters in computer science after working as a software engineer. It is one of the few universities that allowed people like me who come from a totally different background (mechanical engineering) to pursue masters in CS. The entire masters program - though rushed due to quarter pattern instead of semesters - has been quite challenging and very relevant to developing practical skills that would be easily transferrable to the real world. It has been a wholesome experience for me.
Likes
- The teaching process is very interactive and professors are very friendly.
- The university provides lot of study resources to the students.
- It also provides a lot of commuting facilities to the students.
Dislikes
- The quarter system makes the curriculum a bit hectic.
- Three courses are to be completed within a span of 10 weeks which make it difficult for professors to cover all the topics and students to learn them.
- But professors make great effort to complete all the topics. There are quite less career fairs to support students in their job hunt process.
Overview
Its an overall good experience to study at University of Chicago but one should consider the university fees before taking a call to join the university. Because of the university ranking and teaching curriculum which has good reviews from previous students.
Scholarship
There is no scholarship provided for MPCS program.
Overview
Ranking and culture both appealed to me when i was choosing. it was the top school in economics and the people i spoke to seemed very intelligent and interesting.

Overview
It's a top-ranked school and I wanted to take advantage of the best opportunities presented to me! I think my school will be able to catapult me to the highest levels of success. Also, I love the Chicago area and knew I wanted to live here.
Scholarship
Yes, there are many scholarships you can apply for via essay and application but students are also just automatically considered for scholarships upon application.
