Undergraduate applications from India are limited and most Indian entrants join at the masters level. The top five UG programmes for Indian applicants sit in Computer Science, Managerial Economics, Biological Sciences, Mechanical Engineering and Neurobiology, all charging the standard non-resident undergraduate tuition of USD 46,326 per year (INR 40.5 lakh) plus fees.
Insider note: Indian masters intakes cluster heavily in MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics at UC Davis, with the MSBA class historically 60% to 70% international. STEM-designated coding pushes both programmes into 36-month OPT eligibility, which is the main reason Indian students choose these over shorter non-STEM options.

University of California, Davis Admission 2027
University of California, Davis runs a single Fall intake for most graduate programmes, with a Winter or Spring start available only for a small set of masters and doctoral cohorts. Fall 2027 is the primary intake for Indian applicants targeting the 2027-28 academic year.

[Source: UC Davis Graduate Studies]

University of California, Davis Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
UC Davis admission requirements set a minimum GPA equivalent for Indian applicants plus English-language proficiency and, for select programmes, standardised test scores.
Postgraduate applicants:
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree of at least four years with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); three-year Indian bachelors may need a bridge or one-year PG diploma for some departments
- English language: TOEFL iBT 80 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS Academic 7.0 or Duolingo English Test 115
- Credential verification: WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation of Indian transcripts required for most programmes
- Standardised tests: GRE required for MS Computer Science and MS Statistics; GMAT or GRE for full-time MBA and MSBA (waivers available for strong profiles)
Undergraduate applicants:
- Academic: Class 12 with 85% to 95% (recommended) across best four subjects; holistic review
- English language: TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 120 (may be waived if Class 12 was in English medium)
Key insight: UC Davis waives the English test only when the applicant has earned a bachelor’s or masters entirely in English-medium instruction from a recognised institution. Indian applicants from CBSE, ISC or state boards typically do NOT qualify for the waiver based on Class 12 alone.
University of California, Davis Acceptance Rate 2027
UC Davis admits roughly 44% (estimated) of undergraduate applicants overall, with international undergraduate admit rates historically higher at close to 55% to 60% (estimated). Graduate programme admit rates are not published centrally, but Computer Science and MSBA sit well below 20% (estimated) based on programme-level disclosures.
| Year | Acceptance Rate (Undergraduate) | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 44% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2024 | 44% to 46% (estimated) | Slight tightening |
| 2023 | 49% (estimated) | Baseline |
The acceptance rate is derived from third-party admission data, since UC Davis does not publish an aggregate international admit rate for graduate programmes. Programme-level competitiveness varies sharply, with MS Business Analytics and MS Computer Science far more selective than agricultural and environmental masters.
Reality check: Indian applicants with a CGPA above 8.0/10, a 320+ GRE and a strong statement of purpose fit the median admit profile for STEM MS at UC Davis. Below 7.0/10 CGPA with no research or work experience, the odds of admission to competitive programmes drop steeply.

University of California, Davis Campus, Facilities and Student Life

- Location and transport: Davis is served by Amtrak, Yolobus and free Unitrans campus buses, with Sacramento International Airport 30 minutes by shuttle

- Indian student community: The Indian Student Association at UC Davis runs Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; the university lists more than 800 student organisations overall
What Indian students say: Davis is safer and less expensive than Bay Area alternatives, with a strong bike culture and easy weekend access to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. Students note that academic advising is responsive but internal fellowships for international students are scarce, so most Indians self-fund the first year.
University of California, Davis Scholarships for Indian Students 2027
UC Davis lists a limited set of scholarships open to international graduate students, and most Indian applicants fund studies through teaching assistantships, research assistantships or external India-based awards. The Graduate School of Management runs merit scholarships within its MBA and MSBA cohorts.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate School of Management Merit Scholarships | Merit-based | Partial tuition, up to USD 30,000 (INR 26.2 lakh) (estimated) | Automatic consideration for MBA and MSBA applicants | Tied to programme priority deadline |

| Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) | Research appointment | Tuition remission plus stipend, varies by grant | Faculty-nominated, contingent on funded research | Rolling, faculty-managed |
| External Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship | US Government scholarship | Full tuition, stipend and travel | Indian citizens with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 minimum | Applications open May 2026 for the 2027 cycle |
| External Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship | Private, India | Up to USD 100,000 (INR 87.5 lakh) | Indian citizens under 30, admitted offer from UC Davis | Verify at inlaksfoundation.org |
[Source: UC Davis Global Affairs; UC Davis Graduate School of Management; USIEF Fulbright-Nehru India]
Planning note: Internal UC Davis funding for international masters students is thin outside the GSM merit awards. Indian applicants should pair a UC Davis application with a Fulbright-Nehru or Inlaks application by their respective India deadlines, since these external awards convert reliably into full-tuition support at UC Davis.

University of California, Davis vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares UC Davis with two other UC campuses, one national US peer and one Indian benchmark, on QS World Rankings 2027, the Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 rank and average PG fees.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of California, Davis | #137 | #50 | 32,000 to 65,560 | 28.0 to 57.4 lakh | Top-ranked in Veterinary Science and Agriculture |
| UC Irvine | #131 | #54 (estimated) | 34,000 to 60,000 (estimated) | 29.8 to 52.5 lakh (estimated) | Strong CS and engineering placements in Southern California |

| IIT Delhi | #118 | NA | 3,500 to 4,500 (estimated) | 3.1 to 3.9 lakh (estimated) | India-based benchmark with fraction of the cost |
UC Davis stands out in its peer set for the strongest agriculture, veterinary and food-science departments in the UC system, plus a lower-cost college-town living environment relative to UC San Diego or Bay Area alternatives.
The University of California, Davis is best suited to Indian applicants with a solid quantitative or scientific undergraduate profile, roughly INR 60 to 90 lakh in funding for two years and an ROI target keyed to a USD 117,000+ median post-masters salary. STEM OPT eligibility and Bay Area recruiter access are the single strongest Indian-specific advantages, backed by study in USA visa pathways that convert the F-1 into a three-year US work window for STEM graduates.
UC Davis is NOT the right fit for applicants below a CGPA of 7.0/10 with no research or work experience, or for those who need a lower-cost, higher-scholarship pathway. A realistic alternative for Indian STEM applicants at a similar academic tier is Arizona State University, which offers larger merit awards to Indian masters entrants at a lower total cost of attendance.
University of California, Davis FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UC Davis?
Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at UC Davis can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during quarters in session and 40 hours per week during breaks. On-campus roles include library assistantships, dining services and lab positions. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation. Indian graduate students typically secure paid teaching or research assistantships from the second year onward, which cover a large share of tuition.
Ques. Does UC Davis waive the GRE for Indian MS applicants?
Ans. UC Davis GRE policies vary by department. MS Computer Science and MS Statistics historically require the GRE, while several MS engineering programmes have made it optional since 2022. The full-time MBA and MSBA at the Graduate School of Management waive the GMAT or GRE for applicants with strong quantitative undergraduate backgrounds and relevant work experience. Indian applicants should confirm the current test policy on the specific department admissions page before applying.
Ques. What is the application fee for UC Davis graduate programmes?
Ans. The UC Davis graduate application fee for international applicants is USD 155 (INR 13,563) per programme. This fee is non-refundable and must be paid by credit card at submission. Fee waivers are available for domestic US applicants who meet income criteria but are generally not extended to Indian international applicants. Applicants targeting multiple UC Davis departments must pay the fee separately for each application.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for UC Davis?
Ans. UC Davis is a Prodigy Finance and MPOWER partner institution for select programmes and is recognised by all major Indian public and private lenders. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank offer collateral and non-collateral education loans up to INR 1.5 crore for masters study at UC Davis. Loan disbursement typically follows the SEVIS I-20 and F-1 visa approval, with tuition paid directly to the university in USD.
Ques. How does UC Davis verify Indian transcripts and degrees?
Ans. UC Davis requires Indian applicants to submit official transcripts and degree certificates directly from the issuing university, sealed and stamped. Most graduate departments accept or require a WES ICAP course-by-course credential evaluation sent electronically to UC Davis Graduate Studies. Applicants must upload scanned copies of Indian transcripts with the online application and arrange WES evaluation early since Indian document turnaround can add three to six weeks.
Ques. Does UC Davis offer conditional admission for Indian applicants?
Ans. UC Davis Graduate Studies does not offer conditional academic admission based on incomplete prerequisites. However, applicants who meet all academic criteria but fall short on TOEFL or IELTS may be admitted with a language condition, typically requiring completion of the UC Davis Intensive English or another approved English programme before starting graduate coursework. This route is programme-dependent and confirmed on a case-by-case basis by the admissions committee.
Ques. What is the refund policy at University of California, Davis?
Ans. UC Davis follows the University of California system refund schedule, which returns 100% of tuition and non-resident supplemental tuition if a student withdraws before the first day of instruction. Refunds drop to 90% in the first week, 50% by the fourth week and zero after the sixth week of the quarter. International students who defer or withdraw after arriving on F-1 status should coordinate with Services for International Students and Scholars to protect visa status.
Ques. How long does STEM OPT last for UC Davis graduates?
Ans. Graduates of STEM-designated programmes at UC Davis, including MS Computer Science, MS Business Analytics and most MS engineering degrees, are eligible for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension. This gives Indian STEM graduates a total of 36 months to work in the United States on F-1 status after completing the degree, typically enough time to enter the H-1B lottery three times.

The experience I have had here till now is beem great, I have met so many different people from all across the globe known about their culture and learned latest academic things as well from them, and there are always some kind of events happening here and there you can easily find your own community here, there's always someone to support you here for anything you need
Campus Life
Oh its great, there are a lot of undergrad students and organization so there's always some kind of event happening somewhere or the other, and benefits of that you network with new people and you get free food. And there are a lot of sports related events also happening in world class stadiums, specially the Football and Basketball games here are the best
Overview
I love UC Davis, it is a good mix of competitive academics and lifestyle outside of classes. Some classes are definitely very challenging, but there are many extracurricular activities that help to destress from these challenging courses. UC Davis is also very diverse, so many people are able to find like-minded friends to surround themselves with.
Campus Life
UC Davis has many clubs, so anyone can find something that they are passionate in. Once a year, UC Davis also hosts picnic day, which is our biggest event of the year. As a research institution, there is also many labs that one can join. Our library is not great compared to some other schools, and there are many areas on campus where the wifi does not work

- Close to Bay Area, Nice campus Housing was near campus.
Overview
Pretty well. Student body was nice. Working opportunities were plenty. Made lots of memories. Could be better but COVID put everyone in a tight money soot.
Campus Life
Wifi is unreliable. Always under construction Older classes were painful to sit in for long times.
Overview
Close to home, a good program for my major, well known, liberal. It is also a beautiful campus that is easy in terms of transportation if you have a bike. The whole campus is built to make biking easy.
Fees
Tuition, Courses, Health Insurance through campus, meal plan and on-campus living came to 35-40 grand.
Overview
It was close to home and affordable because I got a merit scholarship. Also, it is a great school so I would have great opportunities for my career in the future. I also believe the accounting program is one of the best.
Fees
My tuition was mostly already covered along with other expenses because of merit scholarships and financial aid.
Overview
The distance from home and the quality of education were enticing, so I opted to go here over my other options, which would either have been further or less quality. I think the economics program is one of the top 20 in the country, so it made my decision easier.
Fees
Well, they charge tuition and for online book access, which is optional. Tuition isn't too expensive although the online books can sometimes run $90 (cheaper than the textbook would have been though).
Overview
The prestige of the school and location. I liked that it was relatively close to home for me, and my high school pushed for students to go to the most prestigious school they could get into. For me, that was UC Davis.
Fees
This college is so overpriced. I went to a community college as well where I spent a small fraction of the cost I spent at Davis and I have better materials. It seems as though student costs do not cover materials and costs for that individual student learning experience. It seemed as though the money just went towards the professor's research because in all of my bio classes I used a microscope maybe four times. At the community college, I had my own microscope to use every day.
Overview
I chose UC Davis because it is 1.5 hours away from home, has good bachelors programs and I was awarded a full ride scholarship to attend UC Davis. I like how the campus is very scenic, has a welcoming vibe and all are very friendly.
Fees
Fees that accrued during the school year are generally paid with financial aid/grant money that is awarded the assistance of FAFSA.
