Reality check: Indian MBA applicants without the preferred two years’ experience are still competitive if the SOP ties undergraduate projects or internships to a specific Detroit-market career plan.
University of Michigan, Dearborn PhD Admissions
UM-Dearborn offers a small set of doctoral programmes, led by the Doctor of Engineering (DEng) in CECS. Admissions are selective and funded; Indian applicants should treat each programme as a research match rather than a coursework application.

- Submit the graduate application with a research proposal, three LORs, and WES-evaluated transcripts
- Clear the TOEFL iBT 84 or IELTS 6.5 doctoral English floor

Full funding routes and external fellowships are mapped on the UM-Dearborn funding for Indian students page.
University of Michigan, Dearborn Application Process
Indian applicants apply directly to UM-Dearborn through its online graduate or undergraduate application; there is no Common App or UCAS layer. The process is linear and typically takes 60 to 90 minutes once documents are ready.
- Create an account on the UM-Dearborn application portal and choose intake plus programme
- Enter academic history and upload unofficial transcripts for initial review
- Request WES course-by-course credential evaluation and send scores to UM-Dearborn
- Upload the Statement of Purpose, CV, and three LORs (two academic, one professional for PG)
- Report TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or MET scores through the testing agency
- Pay the application fee of USD 60 (INR 5,670) for graduate or USD 45 (INR 4,253) for undergraduate on the portal

University of Michigan, Dearborn Admission Decisions
UM-Dearborn releases decisions on a rolling basis, typically four to eight weeks after the file is complete. Graduate CECS files often clear faster during the September to January window and slow around the March priority peak.
- Offer timing: four to eight weeks from file completion
- Acceptance deadline: enrolment confirmation and tuition deposit due within 30 days of the offer
- Conditional offers: issued when the final-year marksheet or English score is pending; must be cleared before I-20 release
- Deferral: one-term deferral to the next intake is allowed with a written request; a second deferral requires reapplication
University of Michigan, Dearborn Documents Required
Keep every document in English or notarised translation, scanned at 300 DPI, and labelled by category before you open the portal. CECS reviewers flag incomplete files rather than requesting missing items, so one upload gap can delay the decision by weeks.
- Valid passport (bio-page scan, at least six months beyond intake)
- Class X, Class XII, and semester-wise Bachelor’s marksheets
- Degree certificate or provisional certificate (if awarded)
- WES course-by-course evaluation report
- Statement of Purpose (around 800 to 1,000 words)
- Three Letters of Recommendation on institutional letterhead
- Updated CV with academic, project, and work history
- English proficiency test score report (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or MET)
- Financial affidavit and bank statement covering first-year costs
- Experience letters from employers (if claiming work experience for MBA)
University of Michigan, Dearborn Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
UM-Dearborn does not publish an institutional acceptance rate; third-party trackers estimate it at around 58.6%, placing it in the moderately selective band for US regional public universities. Indian intake is roughly 621 students against a total international body of 870, giving India the largest single-country share.
University of Michigan, Dearborn Admission Trends
CECS graduate programmes see the heaviest Indian application volume; MSE Automotive Systems Engineering and MS Data Science are the two most competitive tracks. Admit rates for these tracks sit below the institutional average because of applicant concentration.
University of Michigan, Dearborn Indian Applicant Patterns
Most admitted Indian students arrive with a four-year B.Tech or B.E. at 70% or higher, two to four strong projects, and TOEFL 90+ or IELTS 7.0+. Direct application without a WES report is the single largest cause of file closures.
Insider note: Applying in the September to December window improves response speed; applications stacked near the 1 March priority date wait longer because of CECS review volume. The UM-Dearborn acceptance rate page breaks programme-level patterns further.
USA Student Visa for University of Michigan, Dearborn Indian Applicants
Admitted Indian students apply for the F-1 student visa after receiving the I-20 from UM-Dearborn’s International Student Services. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,075), book a visa interview at a US consulate (Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad), and pay the DS-160 machine-readable visa fee of USD 185 (INR 17,483). Financial proof must cover the full first-year cost of attendance, backed by a bank statement, education loan sanction, or affidavit of support from a sponsor.
After arrival, report to International Student Services within the first week for SEVIS activation. STEM-designated graduates become eligible for the 12-month OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a 36-month post-study work window.
2026 update: F-1 interview wait times at Indian consulates run 30 to 90 days in peak Fall-intake months, so book the slot the day the I-20 arrives.
Tips for University of Michigan, Dearborn Admissions
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UM-Dearborn across the last three Fall cycles.
- Request WES early: start the evaluation 10 to 12 weeks before your target priority date
- Anchor the SOP to Detroit: tie coursework and projects to Ford, Stellantis, or GM pipelines
- Target STEM MSE tracks: secures the 24-month OPT extension that most Indian applicants plan for
- Skip GRE unless it helps: optional means truly optional; a weak score hurts more than no score
- Apply by December: CECS reviewers clear files faster before the March priority surge
- Secure the Dearborn Graduate Scholarship: up to USD 10,000 (INR 9.45 Lakhs) is awarded automatically; see the UM-Dearborn funding for Indian students page for other options
University of Michigan, Dearborn Admissions Checklist
The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete across the 20-week run-up to a UM-Dearborn Fall 2027 intake.
- 20 weeks out: finalise programme shortlist and book TOEFL or IELTS slot
- 16 weeks out: initiate WES course-by-course evaluation of all transcripts
- 12 weeks out: request three LORs with a four-week recommender window
- 10 weeks out: complete first and second drafts of the Statement of Purpose
- 6 weeks out: upload documents, pay the application fee, and submit before the priority date
- Post-decision: pay the enrolment deposit within 30 days to trigger I-20 release
- Pre-departure: clear SEVIS, book the F-1 interview, and arrange on-campus housing at The Union at Dearborn
University of Michigan, Dearborn rewards Indian applicants who treat the file as a Detroit-industry pitch rather than a generic US application. Lock a STEM MSE track, apply before the March 2027 priority date, and the automatic USD 10,000 scholarship typically offsets a meaningful share of first-year tuition.

- Secondly the campus life here is so awesome , vibrant and convenient since iam living on campus it makes me easily access library ,labs and study spaces available at the university anytime
- The close student to faculty connection is one of the best parts of UofM dearborn Since its a Smaller campus when compared to other Colleges around the place , we can easily get to know the professors personally which really helps
Dislikes
- The first and foremost thing is the location of the campus which is so remote so nothing is nearby to explore you have to take few busses to visit certain places and buy your essentials
- Secondly i mentioned you have to take busses to go to places but sadly public transportation is poor in dearborn making it hard to commute for essentials without a car
- The academic focus is heavily centered around automotive field so students like me from other specializations like AI ,CS ,and others can find fewer research options that align with their field and interests
Scholarship
- Yes, there are scholarships available for international graduate students. I received the Graduate International scholarship, which is offered to all international students enrolled for 9 or more credit hours per semester. The scholarship reduces 5000$ from the tuition fees per semester, totalling 10000$ per academic year
- The main eligibility criteria for the scholarship are must be an international student, must be enrolling in 9 or more credit hours per semester, and must maintain good academic standing throughout the program
- There are different scholarships for domestic students which are not easily offered; they require tons of applications and paperwork
- Many of my batch mates received the same scholarship cause it is a standard award for all full-time international students
- On average, a large number of international students receive this award of 10000$ annually

- I received the international student scholarship I believe the criteria for this is the CGPA should be at least seven on a scale of 10. The scholarship is $5,500 for semester.
- This scholarship is applied to an international student by default and I did not apply for any other scholarship through any other third-party portal or university portal. Don't mind knowledge most of the students who have a CGPA about seven receive this scholarship.

Overview
I always wanted to do a master's, and I am passionate about AI, and US is well known for this course, so researched and applied to 5 colleges and got into 3, out of these colleges, I considered a lot of factors and decided to go to University of Michigan-Dearborn due to various reasons.

- The university is spoon-feeding us every single thing right from picking us up from our flats to providing unlimited groceries twice a month. The perks that we have been getting from the university in terms of academics and clubs are at their highest levels.
Dislikes
- There's nothing I really dislike about my university at this very moment. The only con I would like to mention is that we cannot get an on-campus job until we complete our first semester. Only a few very lucky people can become Research Assistants in the first semester.
Overview
The US has been a lifelong dream for my father. He wanted to study in the US but could not because of financial restrictions. I made his dream come true. I'm a person who's very much into research and this is the country that tops in this aspect. My university is known to be one of the top institutions in the United States and the program I'll be studying in (AI) is basically the one that has a huge impact on everyone's life in the future. I wanted to be a part of the esteemed university given its rich background which would allow me to live in safe hands.

- Small college - smaller class with fewer students helps prof give more attention to you.

Overview
I have a UG background in Mech Engg. and I chose to go ahead with a Masters in Engineering Management course since I did not want to get into a very technical field hence I chose the University of Michigan since it has a good blend of mechanical and business courses without a very technical or Computer science courses. The fees is affordable and they also give a scholarship. The housing and accommodations are also affordable compared to other cities in the US. Texas also is a good option but the summer gets really bad there. University of Michigan Dearborn is a sub-university to the main campus in Ann Arbor which is a highly reputed and expensive university but Dearborn is also a good one in terms of education. There might not be a lot to do outside of academic terms but it's a good place to be. Career-wise - the students have to build their skills and apply for jobs on their own.
Likes

- it is a very small campus and it is not very happening. wish there were better campus engagement activities. I didn't like the fact that the faculty did not care if the students attended the class or not.

Then there is the 'Mardigian Library' which serves as a primary hub for research and academic study, offering an extensive collection of books, journals, databases, and various resources. In addition, the library provides study areas, computer labs, and support from librarians to assist students in their academic pursuits. Furthermore the health services which offers the health clinics or services to deliver fundamental medical care, health education, and counseling to students. The best thing for transportation is 'Shuttle Service' Which is completely free to students to travel to and from campus.
Dislikes
- Talking about the weakness about the college the Pantry Services are not so good, even the commuting problems, transferring of the credits is another issue. Tuition and Financial Aid is bit challenging like some students may find the cost of tuition and the availability of financial aid to be challenging.
