University of Houston Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility for Indian applicants at University of Houston splits into an academic threshold, an English-proficiency test score, and, for the undergraduate auto-admit path, a standardised test score. Percentages below convert American GPA into the Indian percentage bands most CBSE, ICSE, and state-board students are used to.
- UG general entry: Class XII at 65% or higher (equivalent to a 3.0 GPA on the 4.0 scale UH uses).
- UG auto-admit: top 10% of the graduating class, or a 3.5 GPA (80%), or SAT 1250+ / ACT 26+.
- PG general entry: a four-year bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA (roughly 65 to 70%), scored on the last 60 credit hours if the overall grade is weaker.
- English scores (all levels): IELTS 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 79, or Duolingo English Test 105.
- GRE / GMAT: required for most MS tracks, waived case-by-case for MPP with 3.3+ GPA, and optional for the MS Computer Science Artificial Intelligence track.
University of Houston English Waiver for Indian Students
UH lists an English proficiency waiver only for applicants who completed secondary or bachelor’s education in one of 29 English-speaking countries (Australia, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and others) or who earned 30+ US semester credit hours including English Composition 1 and 2 with a grade of C or better. India is not on the country list, so Class XII from an English-medium CBSE or ICSE school does not qualify. Indian transfer students already holding US credit can waive under the transfer route.
Insider note: Waiver refusals on the medium-of-instruction route are the single biggest reason Indian applications stall at UH. Book IELTS or the Duolingo English Test at least eight weeks before your target deadline, since the transfer-credit waiver only helps students already in a US institution.
University of Houston PG Programs for Indian Applicants
UH runs its MS and MA portfolio across the Cullen College of Engineering, the Bauer College of Business, and the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Program-page requirements can lift the institutional 3.0 GPA floor and add a GRE expectation. Base tuition varies by college, since UH charges per semester credit hour rather than a flat annual rate — see the detailed per-course fees breakdown for figures.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |

University of Houston Undergraduate Programs for Indian Students
UH offers over 100 undergraduate majors across 14 colleges, most open to international freshmen through the Common App or ApplyTexas route. Popular Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Business Administration streams admit Indian applicants under the same institutional floor. Base out-of-state undergraduate tuition for 2026-2027 is USD 27,776 (INR 26.53 Lakhs) per year across two 15-hour semesters, per the university’s cost and aid page.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |

University of Houston MBA Admissions for Indian Students
The C. T. Bauer College of Business runs three MBA formats aimed at working professionals: the Professional MBA (evening and online), the Executive MBA (alternating Friday and Saturday weekends), and the fully online MBA. UH does not currently operate a residential full-time MBA aimed at fresh graduates, which is worth noting before applying.
University of Houston MBA Rounds and Requirements
The Professional MBA international deadline for the Fall 2027 cohort typically opens by August 2026 and closes on 1 March 2027, with the Spring 2027 international deadline set for 1 October 2026. GMAT or GRE scores are required, with case-by-case waivers granted through the online application. Post-bachelor’s professional experience is strongly preferred — the incoming PMBA cohort averaged 8.2 years of work experience, and the EMBA cohort averaged 18.8 years. The international application fee is USD 80 (INR 7,641). Program duration runs a minimum of 22 months on the PMBA and 21 months on the EMBA.
Reality check: The UH MBA formats assume you can attend evening or weekend classes in Houston, so an F-1 visa applicant relocating from India must plan for full-time coursework at a local address — the online MBA is the only route that avoids relocation, and it still requires the same GMAT, work-experience, and English-proficiency documentation.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Houston Professional MBA page before applying.
University of Houston PhD Admissions for Indian Students
UH runs doctoral programs across engineering, natural sciences, biomedical sciences, business, education, and the humanities under its Carnegie R1 research designation. Doctoral admission at UH is more competitive than the MS route, since departments admit primarily to funded assistantship slots rather than open-tuition seats.
University of Houston PhD Deadlines and Entry
Most PhD programs open a single Fall intake, with January 1 to February 15 international priority deadlines across biology, biochemistry, and biomedical engineering, and a March 15 priority deadline for engineering. Spring PhD applications are open in some departments (Electrical, Civil, Engineering Data Science) with a 15 October 2026 international deadline.
Applicants need a bachelor’s or master’s with a strong 3.0+ GPA, three letters of recommendation, a research statement, and GRE scores where the specific program requires them. IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 79 applies uniformly. The international application fee is USD 80 (INR 7,641). Funded PhD offers typically pair a graduate assistantship with a tuition benefit, so confirm funding terms with the department before accepting.

University of Houston Application Process Step by Step
Indian applicants file undergraduate applications through the Common Application (opened for the 2026-2027 cycle on 31 July 2026) or through Texas’ state platform ApplyTexas. Graduate applicants file through ApplyWeb, UH’s dedicated CollegeNET-hosted portal.
- Create your account on the Common Application or ApplyTexas for undergraduate applications, or on ApplyWeb for graduate applications; the Common App 2026-2027 cycle opened 31 July 2026.
- Pay the application fee of USD 90 (INR 8,596) for undergraduate or USD 80 (INR 7,641) for graduate applications when you submit; both are nonrefundable.
- Upload official transcripts (Class XII marksheets for UG, or bachelor’s transcripts for PG) as scanned PDFs — physical copies are only required after admission.
- Send IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo English Test scores directly from the testing agency using UH institution code 6870.
- Submit GRE or GMAT scores where the specific graduate program requires them; UG applicants add SAT or ACT for auto-admit consideration.
- Attach the Statement of Financial Support form, a bank statement showing at least USD 43,110, and your passport biometric page.
- Upload an essay and resume, plus three letters of recommendation for graduate programs, then submit and track through your applicant portal.
Watch the applicant portal daily once you submit — UH pushes admission decisions, I-20 requests, and document deficiency notices only through the portal, not by email.
University of Houston Documents Required for Indian Applicants
Documents below cover the paperwork admissions and international student services will demand — the academic thresholds themselves live in the Eligibility section. Failing to submit any single item can hold up your I-20 issuance for weeks.
- Passport biometric page — scanned copy, must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry to the US.
- Official Class XII marksheet for UG applicants, or attested bachelor’s transcripts for PG applicants, uploaded as PDF.
- Degree certificate (for PG applicants) once your final year results are declared.
- English proficiency score report sent directly by IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo to UH.
- GRE / GMAT / SAT / ACT score reports where the program requires them.
- Bank statement showing minimum USD 43,110 (INR 41.17 Lakhs) — must be less than six months old.
- Statement of Financial Support Form, signed by your financial sponsor.
- Statement of purpose or personal essay and updated resume or CV.
- 3 letters of recommendation for graduate applicants, submitted electronically through the portal.
- Program-specific supplemental materials — writing samples for humanities, portfolios for architecture, or work-experience letters for MBA formats.

University of Houston Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
UH publishes a broad institutional acceptance profile rather than a country-level rate. The commonly cited overall figures are 74% for undergraduate admission and roughly 47% for graduate admission, with sharper filters inside competitive tracks like MS Computer Science and MS Finance.
University of Houston Program-Level Selectivity
Engineering and business master’s programs run tighter than the institutional average because seat counts are capped by lab and faculty capacity. MS CS in particular sees heavy Indian applicant volume, so a 3.3+ GPA, GRE quantitative score above 160, and prior programming experience visibly shift the odds.
Where University of Houston Sits Relative to Peers
UH sits in the QS World University Rankings 2027 ranking band #551, in the same tier as several other Texas public research universities. For Indian applicants weighing Texas options, UH’s acceptance rate is more forgiving than the University of Texas at Austin but tighter than several regional state schools.
Planning note: Applying by the scholarship priority deadline meaningfully shifts your acceptance odds, since UH filters merit-aid candidates from the earliest submitted files. The Fall 2028 scholarship priority round will open 1 August 2027, so plan test scores accordingly.
USA F-1 Student Visa Process for University of Houston
Indian students admitted to University of Houston apply for the F-1 non-immigrant student visa to enter the United States. The F-1 category permits full-time academic study, with the option of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation, including a STEM extension for most UH engineering, science, and analytics majors.
After UH issues your I-20 through myUH self-service, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,429), complete DS-160, and book a visa interview at the US Embassy or consulate covering your Indian city. The consular fee is USD 185 (INR 17,669). Carry your I-20, DS-160 confirmation, passport, UH admission letter, financial documents totaling at least USD 43,110 (INR 41.17 Lakhs), and academic transcripts to your interview. F-1 visa slots at Chennai, Mumbai, and New Delhi book out weeks in advance during the April to July peak, so schedule as soon as SEVIS clears.
2026 update: After arrival in Houston, report to UH International Student and Scholar Services within 30 days for SEVIS registration and immigration check-in, complete on-campus orientation, and secure your Texas driver’s licence or state ID for local address verification.

Tips and Application Checklist for University of Houston
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at University of Houston, focusing on where the cycle most often stalls or where a small time-shift changes the outcome.
- Book IELTS 10 to 12 weeks before your target deadline so you can retake once if needed; UH does not accept the MOI waiver for Indian schools.
- Target the Fall 2027 scholarship priority round in 2026 for merit aid at the UG level; regular decision applicants rarely get equivalent scholarship offers.
- Choose Common App over ApplyTexas if you are applying to multiple US universities; the Common App recycles your essay and profile across schools.
- Request Class XII or bachelor’s transcripts eight weeks before deadline from CBSE, ICSE, or your Indian university’s evaluation cell.
- File the ApplyWeb graduate application at least 21 days before the program deadline so recommendation emails have time to convert.
- Update your bank statement so it is dated within six months of the submission date; older statements are rejected outright at I-20 stage.
- Draft your Statement of Purpose to link a specific UH research group, professor, or track — generic SOPs get lower marks in graduate committee review.
- Book your F-1 visa interview slot the same day you receive I-20, since peak-season slots at Indian consulates fill quickly.
- Enable myUH portal notifications and check the applicant portal daily post-submission — UH publishes deficiency notices there rather than by email.
University of Houston admissions reward Indian applicants who move on the earliest deadlines and file complete document sets on the first try; late or partial applications convert at meaningfully lower rates, and Fall 2027 remains the strongest primary intake for both scholarships and program breadth.

- It is very affordable in terms of tuition fees as well as living expenses. As Master Student studying Computer Science per semester your fees would be around 10k and living expenses per month would be around 450. If you are coming for Data Science or any other major that falls under College of Engineering you would easily get scholarship and your tuition fees would be halved.
- It is relatively easier to get an on-campus job. There are loads of opportunities available for international students. There are fair amount of assistantships as well which could be achieved with a bit more research and networking.
- The options in terms of subject selection are also vast and you could also see subjects that would be offered till next three semesters which makes planning selection a lot more easier.
Dislikes
- There are too many international students enrolled for courses like Computer Science, Data Science etc which is not that great to be honest.
- Although there are career fairs organized by the university, they are very rare, maybe 1 or 2 per semester so it gets a bit difficult to find a job.
- The location being Houston is not great for Technological students since there are very less companies due to which the advantage of local hiring is pretty much nonexistent.
Scholarship
- I personally haven’t received any scholarship because Computer Science comes under the Natural Sciences and Mathematics department and this department doesn’t have enough funding, however if your major falls under the College of Engineering you will receive a waiver in fees and will have to only pay in-state amounts.
- My friends have received in-state tuition fees halving their tuition fees(reduced by 4-5k each semester).
- You can also get in-state tuition if you get any assistantships either Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant or Instructional Assistant.
- Average number of scholarships depends on the major. For CS maybe just 3-5 out of 40. For Data Science almost 80% of students get in state fees, the same for engineering majors like Chemical Engineering, MIS etc.

- It has a great atmosphere. There is diversity due to students coming from many different countries
- Faculty are always engaged in research with the students. You get to meet your faculty more often compared to any Indian University.
- Simple course structure. The courses are very simple and easy to handle, there is not much load about that
Dislikes
- Medical insurance fees. You have to pay twice in a year, and that is damn expensive compared to the services you will be getting.
- The security of the campus lapses sometimes. There have been many incidents of theft and robbery, where students' valuable items get stolen by the miscreants. It is a major problem, so need to be careful.
- The university is a bit outskirts of the city. So it takes a bit of time to travel by bus to the university.
Scholarship
- No, apart from the Graduate tuition fellowship (GTF), which all the PhD students receive, I didn't get any other fellowship.
- The GTF covers all the semester academic costs for a PhD student.
- Yes, some of my batchmates got a Presidential scholarship.
- The amount is 2000$, and given in 1000$ for 2 years. It depends on the department funding how Many students receive it, but generally 5-6 PhD students receive it.

Likes
- There are many peaceful and suitable places across the campus for study-work.
- The professors are very interactive and helpful, and the education at the college is wrathful.
- The management is beneficial, and there are many giveaways around the campus.
Dislikes
- The weather is so humid and hot.
- Most of the people are Indians (good point) but it also leads to less diversity.
- There are fewer options for food on campus, and some of the classes have very odd timings.
Scholarship
- I didn't receive any scholarships.
- If I get a GPA above 3.75 in the following semesters, then I will receive an instate tuition fee waiver scholarship that is half fee waived; some of the people who got above 9 GPA in their bachelor's received an instant tuition fee waiver.
- I heard that only a few students above 9 GPAs received scholarships but some students above didn't get that scholarship. So many other factors are not revealed. There is a scholarship website for students to apply for external scholarships too in the student portal.

- This is applicable on for the students in The Engineering college, The students in The Business and Management school are not eligible for this scholarship.

Dislikes
- Time Management: I did not like the time it takes to process documents related to CPT / I-20.
- Shuttle Facilities: I wish there is free shuttle provided for students staying in the nearby community though we have paid metro.
- On Campus Jobs: Competition for on-campus job is high so getting a part-time job immediately after joining is a concern.
Scholarship
- Texas State Fund. Eligibility: Academic score and professional achievements are the scholarship during my course.
- $2500 was the award amount for the scholarship I received.
- My batchmates also received scholarships.
- It depends on the course and department. Students with consistent scores throughout their educational career along with impressive GRE and TOEFL scores will get 3500 to 4000 dollars per semester.

Overview
- University of Washington (Rejected)
- RISD (Rejected)
- MASSART (Accepted)
- Virginia Tech (Accepted)
- The reason why I got rejected from the colleges listed above is probably because I was trying to change streams when I applied for design and these colleges were offering more competitive courses that suited well for people who were already in the field or had some relevant experience. UW has a very focused HCI program, RISD is a hard-core design school. Both of these schools probably weren't suited for a novice designer like me.
- University of Houston offered me room to grow and discover myself as a designer as opposed to accept me as one. It was also a very good research-oriented approach to design which is more empathetic towards those who want to enter the design world.
- The admission process was very simple, first step of which is to apply online with all the required material (portfolio, GRE score, TOEFL score, recommendation letters, application fees and forms). Next was the most difficult interview that I ever had. They went through my portfolio in front of me through the call. They accepted me thereafter and then the regular process of applying to any other US college followed that involved the VISA process and paying the fees. There were no challenges as such except for the whole COVID backlash. Highlight was the interview because as nerve wracking it was, it was also something that gave me enough confidence that I can do it. GRE was just a formality, portfolio was the deciding factor. No minimum scores required.
- I applied for the FALL 2021 intake. I wanted to change disciplines and with COVID receding it was the right time to make the move. The admission (right from filling out the required forms and fees in the month of December) to getting an acceptance (March), it was a three month long process. I took the GRE and TOEFL in September, prepared my supplementary material by the end of December and applied then. Gave interviews in the month of February and then got acceptances in March. After which i began the VISA process.
Scholarship
I did receive scholarship for my academic performance from my third semester onwards and my research assistantship allowed me to pay in-state tuition (almost a 40% cut on the original cost). The eligibility criteria was being able to perform well, keeping my grades above a 3.0 GPA, and having the capability to get a RA/TA job that you apply to. My batchmates did not receive a scholarship that gave them a tuition rebate, but they received academic excellence scholarship amounting to 500USD/semester. If one gets 1000USD/semester they get a reduced tuition cost. They have numerous names for these scholarships as it depends on who is donating that year, but they all indicate that you have excelled in your courses. As it is a small program (max 10 people per year), i'd say less than 5% get the scholarship. But the best chance is to get a RA/TA job that guarantees a reduced tuition.

The Master of Science architecture degree here had the sustainable architecture line, and that was something I was really looking forward to learning and leaning towards as an architect. It was fun and a great experience. Got to meet a lot of new people and was able to find help easily whenever I needed it. And loved the hangout spots.
Scholarship
Tried getting a scholarship but had a tough time getting one so unfortunately, I didn’t.
