India-Specific Scholarships at Sam Houston State University

| International Excellence Scholarship | Up to USD 15,000/yr (INR 14.33 Lakhs) | Only route to the Texas resident tuition rate without an assistantship; the default first ask for Indian UG and PG applicants | Rolling; typically assessed with the admission decision |

| Departmental Scholarships4Kats | USD 500 to USD 5,000/yr (INR 47,770 to INR 4.78 Lakhs) | Layered on top of the International Excellence award in second and third semesters, once SHSU GPA is on record | November 1, 2026 (priority for Fall 2027) |

| Doctoral Research Assistantship | In-state tuition + USD 15,000 to USD 22,000/yr stipend (INR 14.33 to INR 21.02 Lakhs) | Admitted doctoral candidates with a confirmed supervisor; concentrated in Criminal Justice, Clinical Psychology, and DBA | January 15, 2027 (priority for Fall 2027 doctoral admission) |

Reddit Insight: Indian master’s admits at Texas public universities like SHSU report a common pattern. The K.C. Mahindra interest-free loan and J.N. Tata Endowment pair cleanly with a Graduate Assistantship. Neither has clauses that conflict with SHSU assistantship terms.

Sam Houston State University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can stack at Sam Houston State University?
Ans. An Indian master’s student can stack a Graduate Assistantship, the automatic Nonresident Tuition Waiver, and a departmental Scholarships4Kats award. That combination covers in-state tuition and removes the non-resident surcharge. The assistantship stipend then pays USD 12,000 to USD 15,300 per year (INR 11.46 to INR 14.62 Lakhs). Combined package value approaches USD 27,000 per year (INR 25.80 Lakhs). No single SHSU award covers 100 percent of tuition plus living costs on its own.
Ques. When should Indian applicants apply for Sam Houston State University scholarships?
Ans. The Scholarships4Kats priority deadline is November 1, 2026 for Fall 2027 intake. Submit admission applications in September or October to leave a runway for the scholarship application. Graduate Assistantship discussions with faculty typically start December to February for Fall admits. The International Excellence Scholarship is assessed with the admission decision itself, without a separate form.
Ques. Do Indian students apply for SHSU scholarships before or after admission?
Ans. Admission must come first. SHSU policy is explicit: you must be accepted to the university before applying for scholarships. The International Excellence Scholarship is the exception, assessed automatically with the admission decision. Departmental Scholarships4Kats and Graduate Assistantships are applied for after acceptance. Use the Scholarships4Kats portal for departmental awards, and email faculty directly to explore assistantships.
Ques. What GPA do Indian students need for Sam Houston State University scholarships?
Ans. Graduate admission requires a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale. That maps to roughly 65 percent Indian bachelor’s percentage. Competitive scholarship consideration typically needs 3.0-plus on a 4.0 scale, or 70 to 75 percent from an Indian university. Graduate Assistantship slots at SHSU generally go to applicants with 3.3-plus GPA. A statement of purpose targeted to a specific supervising faculty member is expected.
Ques. Does the Sam Houston State University Graduate Assistantship stipend cover rent in Huntsville, Texas?
Ans. The annual stipend of USD 12,000 to USD 15,300 covers rent and utilities in Huntsville. That maps to INR 11.46 to INR 14.62 Lakhs on the current exchange. A one-bedroom apartment near campus rents for USD 750 to USD 1,000 per month (INR 71,655 to INR 95,540). The stipend does not cover a two-bedroom in Houston 70 miles south. Indian assistantship holders generally live on-campus or in Huntsville, not in the Houston metro.

- I love that they have various daily events for students to stay engaged. I know for some it’s hard, the transition from high school or transition into a new state/country. Many students feel alone so it’s nice to be included in things that are free even if you don’t have any friends yet.
Dislikes
- The only thing I dislike about the campus is that there are some hills and a few tutors who aren’t helpful (very few) but you can always go to a different tutor if you don’t like the one you met with.
Scholarship
Smith-Hutson scholarship : $20,000 a year Two - round selections 1st applications 2nd in-person interviews Essay, 2 recommendations, and previous year tax forms as scholarship is mostly based on financial need.
I chose this university as it is close enough to home where I can still visit and I received a full ride (Smith-Hutson). It is a small town but not empty. The campus is outside the suburbs with so much nature. I had no idea what to expect. Being here has shown me my potential in the world and taught me what I do matters. There are so many students and different people you can interact with and meet. Every day is a new opportunity to network in your future career and to learn about yourself/studies. I am so excited to start my second year and see what these semesters have in store with me. I can’t wait to make more friends and dive deeper into my programs.
I decided to go to Sam Houston State University for various reasons. One reason was cost because the tuition price is fairly low. Another reason was the location. The school is located in Texas and I am from Texas, so it made sense to go there.
