offers 15+ scholarships and funding awards, of which 10+ are accessible to Indian applicants.
Merit awards require F-1 or J-1 visa status. Graduate assistantships waive up to 100% of tuition. They also add a monthly stipend that covers most Kalamazoo living costs.

Scholarships for UG Students
WMU runs four institutional awards open to Indian undergraduates. The Global Education Merit Scholarship is the most Indian-accessible route since it needs no separate application.
| Scholarship | Amount | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Education Undergraduate Merit Scholarship | Up to $10,000 (INR 9.55 Lakhs) per year, for up to 8 semesters | Admitted international UG on F-1/J-1; minimum 3.50/4.00 GPA | Rolling; auto-considered with admission |
| Medallion Scholarship Program | Up to $16,000 (INR 15.27 Lakhs) per year for 4 years, plus $3,000 (INR 2.86 Lakhs) research award | Top academic profile; competition and interview based | Tentative December 1, 2026 for Fall 2027 entry |
| Mary Upjohn Meader Incoming Freshman Award | $20,000 (INR 19.09 Lakhs) total, split across 4 years | Incoming freshmen with strong merit profile | Tentative January 15, 2027 |
| WMU Legacy Scholarship | $1,000 (INR 95,450) | Children, grandchildren or siblings of WMU alumni | Rolling with admission |
The Global Education Merit award is the workhorse. Applicants submit their WMU admission file and receive automatic consideration for the scholarship.
Indian students with a 3.80+ GPA and a strong personal statement often layer the Medallion with the merit award. WMU admission requirements list the SAT, ACT and English score thresholds needed to unlock the top-tier awards.
Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Graduate funding at WMU splits into merit awards and assistantships. Assistantships are the highest-value channel and can zero out tuition entirely.
| Scholarship / Award | Amount | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Education Graduate Merit Scholarship | Up to $10,000 (INR 9.55 Lakhs) per year, capped at 4 semesters | Admitted PG on F-1/J-1; minimum 3.50/4.00 GPA | February 15, 2027 (Fall 2027) |
| Graduate Assistantship (TA/RA/GA) | Full tuition waiver plus monthly stipend of $1,500 to $2,200 (INR 1.43 Lakhs to INR 2.10 Lakhs) | Master’s or PhD applicants; departmental competition | February 15, 2027; award notification by April 1, 2027 |
| Graduate College Welcome Scholarship | $2,000 (INR 1.91 Lakhs) one-time | New self-funded students entering Fall | Auto-considered with graduate admission |
| WMU Dames Endowed Scholarship | Varies by fund allocation each year | Enrolled graduate students showing need and merit | Tentative March 15, 2027 |
| Departmental / College-Specific Awards | $500 to $5,000 (INR 47,725 to INR 4.77 Lakhs) | Program-specific criteria at Haworth Business, CEAS, Education | Rolling to March 1, 2027 |
Indian applicants routinely target the assistantship route first. A full GA covers all tuition plus a stipend of $6,000 to $9,000 (INR 5.73 Lakhs to INR 8.59 Lakhs) per semester, enough for Kalamazoo living costs.
Reddit Insight: On r/gradadmissions, Indian students report that WMU CS and Data Science departments typically fund 40 to 50% of admitted PG students with some TA or RA slot. Confirmations usually land 4 to 6 weeks after the February 15 deadline.
Cross-check the WMU program pages to see which departments run the deepest assistantship pool for your discipline.
India-Specific Scholarships at
WMU runs no India-only institutional award. Indian applicants stack the general merit scholarship with third-party India-based trust funding, which often closes a $15,000 gap.
| Scholarship | Amount | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| KC Mahindra Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad | Up to INR 10 Lakhs as an interest-free loan-scholarship | Indian citizen admitted to PG programme abroad; income and academic screen | Tentative March 31, 2027 |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | INR 1 Lakh to INR 10 Lakhs loan-scholarship plus gift award up to INR 7.50 Lakhs | Indian citizen with a first-class Bachelor’s, admitted to overseas study | Tentative March 21, 2027 |
| Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship | Up to $100,000 (INR 95.45 Lakhs) covering tuition and living | Indian citizen under 30, resident in India past 6 months, admitted to top programme | Tentative April 30, 2027 |
| Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Scholarship | Interest-free loan up to INR 20 Lakhs | Indian citizen admitted to a Master’s or PhD programme abroad | Tentative April 15, 2027 |
| Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship | 50% grant plus 50% loan; needs-based sizing | Indian citizen under 30, PG applicant, demonstrated financial need | Tentative March 31, 2027 |
The Inlaks award pays out only when the target programme sits on its approved list. Applicants who land both the WMU Global Education Merit and JN Tata often cover 80% or more of their two-year cost.
Reddit Insight: On r/IndiansAbroad, WMU alumni note that KC Mahindra pairs cleanly with an assistantship. The interest-free loan is treated as personal funding on the I-20 and does not disqualify a graduate stipend.
WMU sits at rank 284 in the USA and 600 globally on the Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 ranking, which puts it in scope for most India-based trust awards.
PhD Scholarships
PhD funding at WMU runs primarily through doctoral fellowships and associateships. Full-ride packages are the norm rather than the exception for admitted international PhD candidates.
| Fellowship | Amount | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gwen Frostic Doctoral Fellowship | $25,000 (INR 23.86 Lakhs) stipend plus full tuition waiver | Newly admitted doctoral students in any WMU PhD programme | February 15, 2027 |
| Graduate Doctoral Associate (GDA) | Full tuition waiver plus stipend of $18,000 to $24,000 (INR 17.18 Lakhs to INR 22.91 Lakhs) per year | Enrolled PhD students; nomination via home department | Rolling; typically confirmed by April 1, 2027 |
| Dissertation Completion Fellowship | $5,000 to $10,000 (INR 4.77 Lakhs to INR 9.55 Lakhs) | Advanced doctoral candidates within one year of defense | Tentative October 15, 2026 and February 15, 2027 |
| Graduate Student Research Fund | Up to $1,500 (INR 1.43 Lakhs) per project | Enrolled PhD students running original research | Rolling; three review cycles per year |
| Graduate Student Travel Fund | Up to $500 (INR 47,725) per conference | PhD students presenting at academic conferences | Rolling application |
Indian applicants targeting doctoral study should apply to programmes that actively nominate for the Frostic Fellowship. Engineering, psychology and education carry the highest fellowship-to-admit ratios based on recent cycles.
Doctoral funding usually covers a five-year window, which aligns with typical WMU PhD completion timelines. Applicants should confirm the funding letter language before accepting an offer.
External Government Scholarships for Indian Applicants
Indian applicants can layer USIEF-administered Fulbright funding on top of a WMU offer. These awards pay in full including flights, insurance and settling-in allowance.
| Scholarship | Amount | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship | Full tuition, monthly stipend, return airfare and health insurance; total value $60,000 to $80,000 (INR 57.27 Lakhs to INR 76.36 Lakhs) | Indian citizen, 3-year Bachelor’s minimum, 55% marks, 3 years of relevant work experience | Tentative May 15, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship | Monthly stipend, tuition affiliation fees, airfare and health cover for 6 to 9 months | Indian citizen registered as a PhD scholar at an Indian institution | Tentative July 15, 2026 |
| Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowship | Full grant covering research stay of 8 to 9 months | Indian citizen holding a PhD or postdoc position, climate-related research focus | Tentative July 15, 2026 |
| Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarship | Minimum $30,000 (INR 28.63 Lakhs) per grant | PG applicants aligned with Rotary focus areas; endorsement from a local Rotary club | Varies by district; typically 12 months before study start |
Applicants qualify for Fulbright-Nehru Master’s funding only when they clear these gates:
- Indian citizenship and residence in India at the time of application
- Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with 55% marks or higher
- Three years of full-time paid work experience in the field of study
- No prior US degree; no application to a US university outside the Fulbright pool
Reddit Insight: Fulbright-Nehru applicants targeting US public universities including WMU report that 3+ years of relevant work is functionally required. Most shortlisted candidates show 4 to 7 years of post-degree work.

Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can stack at WMU?
Ans. A full graduate assistantship covers 100% of tuition (about $19,500 or INR 18.61 Lakhs). It also adds a stipend of $12,000 to $18,000 (INR 11.45 Lakhs to INR 17.18 Lakhs) per year. Stack the Graduate College Welcome Scholarship worth $2,000 (INR 1.91 Lakhs) on top for a Fall entry. At the PhD level, the Gwen Frostic Fellowship adds a $25,000 (INR 23.86 Lakhs) stipend on top of full tuition.
Ques. When should Indian students apply for WMU scholarships?
Ans. February 15, 2027 is the hard deadline for Fall 2027 graduate merit awards and assistantships. Award notifications land by April 1, 2027. Undergraduate merit awards are rolling and tied to admission, so Indian applicants should submit complete files by January 15, 2027 for Fall 2027 review. Spring intake decisions close roughly 90 days before term start.
Ques. Do Indian students need a separate application for WMU scholarships?
Ans. The Global Education Merit Scholarship is automatic at both UG and PG levels. Applicants do not fill a separate form. Graduate assistantships, though, require a direct request to the academic department, usually via a statement in the application or a follow-up email to the graduate coordinator. External Indian awards like JN Tata and KC Mahindra need separate applications on their own portals.
Ques. What GPA do Indian students need for WMU merit scholarships?
Ans. The published minimum is 3.50 on a 4.00 scale. This converts to roughly 78% in the Indian percentage system or a CGPA of 7.5 out of 10. Recipients typically show 3.70+ or 85%+, particularly for the Medallion and Frostic awards. English scores usually needed are IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80.
Ques. What does the Global Education Merit Scholarship at WMU cover for Indian students?
Ans. The award pays up to $10,000 (INR 9.55 Lakhs) per academic year. Disbursement happens in two installments across fall and spring semesters. UG recipients keep the award for up to 8 semesters. PG recipients keep it for up to 4 semesters. Recipients must hold F-1 or J-1 status, maintain full-time enrollment and keep their GPA above 3.0.
Ques. Does a WMU scholarship cover living costs in Kalamazoo?
Ans. A merit scholarship alone does not. Kalamazoo living costs run $12,000 to $15,000 (INR 11.45 Lakhs to INR 14.32 Lakhs) per academic year for room, board and personal expenses. A full graduate assistantship stipend of $14,000 to $18,000 per year covers this comfortably. Undergraduates typically pair the merit award with on-campus work of 20 hours per week to close the gap.
Ques. When do WMU assistantship decisions actually get sent out?
Ans. Official notifications land by April 1, 2027 for Fall 2027 admits. In practice, Indian applicants report offers arriving in waves from mid-March. Departments in engineering and business close GA slots first. Applicants who miss the first wave can email the graduate coordinator in June to check for backfill positions vacated by rejected admits.

Scholarship
Yes. I have received a few. I have the honors award scholarship of $14,000/year for graduating high school with a high GPA. I have a book scholarship from attending a pre-event before the semester started for incoming students. I got a scholarship for $3,000/year for also having high grades.
This university is one of the best business college in Michigan. The campus is gorgeous and has many resources for students. The setup of campus is also wonderful with having courses in their designated areas, and the library next to the student center filled with resources, food, and study spaces. I have enjoyed it by far. There are so many options for resources at WMU. The dining halls are amazing as they are newly built. The library is huge and a great study spot. And the newly built student center that is the hub for everything and that is great.
