University of Louisiana at Lafayette Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must clear academic, English-proficiency and credential-verification thresholds before UL Lafayette issues an offer and I-20.
Postgraduate admission thresholds:
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with GPA 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, equivalent to 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 for Indian applicants (recommended baseline)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 53, or Duolingo 110 for graduate applicants
- Credential verification: Official transcripts and mark sheets with certified English translation; UL Lafayette offers complementary in-house evaluation and accepts NACES-member reports (WES, ECE)
- Standardised tests: GRE and GMAT waived for most graduate programmes; specific engineering and MBA departments may request them
Undergraduate admission thresholds:
- Academic: Class 12 with 2.5 cumulative unweighted GPA, equivalent to 55% to 65% aggregate for Indian applicants (recommended); ACT English 18 or SAT EBRW 500 required for freshman entry
- Language: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 100, or PTE Academic 50 for undergraduate applicants
Note: UL Lafayette exempts English-test scores for applicants who completed all high school coursework in a country where English is the official language; Indian applicants can request this waiver only if their entire secondary and higher education has been delivered in English-medium institutions with documented evidence.
University of Louisiana at Lafayette Acceptance Rate 2027
UL Lafayette is a moderately selective admitting institution with an overall acceptance rate of approximately 88% (estimated) for the most recent published cycle. The figure is not officially published on the university’s admissions page and is a third-party-derived estimate; treat it as directional rather than exact.
Graduate acceptance varies by department, with STEM programmes (MS Computer Science, MS Petroleum Engineering) tending toward tighter cohorts because of assistantship allocation caps. Undergraduate acceptance sits close to the overall figure, subject to the 2.5 GPA and standardised-test thresholds.
Reality check: An 88% headline rate does not guarantee automatic admission for Indian applicants; departmental reviewers still filter on GPA, English proficiency, statement of purpose, and financial documentation, and marginal profiles are rejected during the visa stage even after admission.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UL Lafayette does not publish a centralised placement-rate figure; career outcomes are tracked at the college level, with the Career Services Center coordinating employer engagement and OPT-related workshops for F-1 students.
- Placement rate: Not disclosed at university level
- Median starting salary: Not disclosed; US regional-employer median for Louisiana bachelor’s graduates typically sits in the USD 45,000 to 60,000 range (INR 42.99 to 57.32 lakh) depending on major
- Sector concentration: Louisiana energy corridor (oil, gas, petrochemicals), healthcare, information technology, and education

University of Louisiana at Lafayette vs Peer Universities
The peer set below covers other Louisiana public research universities plus one out-of-state Tier 1 comparator relevant to Indian applicants weighing UL Lafayette against similar-fee options.
| University | Location | Focus / Differentiator | Approx. Annual Out-of-State PG Fee (USD / INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Louisiana at Lafayette | Lafayette, LA | Petroleum engineering, informatics, computer science | USD 24,930 / INR 23.82 lakh |
| Louisiana State University (LSU) | Baton Rouge, LA | State flagship; broader programme range; higher research funding | Higher tier; verify at LSU cashier page |
| Louisiana Tech University | Ruston, LA | Engineering-focused; smaller cohort; strong industry ties | Similar range; verify at official page |
| University of New Orleans | New Orleans, LA | Urban campus; hospitality, business and naval architecture | Similar range; verify at official page |
| University of Texas at Arlington | Arlington, TX | Larger Tier 1 research campus; deeper STEM programme catalogue | Higher tier; verify at official page |
UL Lafayette stands out on cost-per-credit-hour among Louisiana publics and delivers direct pipelines into the state’s energy sector. Applicants who prioritise flagship research scale over lower fees generally move to LSU or UT Arlington instead.
Key insight: UL Lafayette offers the lowest combined tuition-plus-COL total in this peer set for Indian graduate students, which is why STEM applicants weighing multiple admits often anchor here when the target is a debt-manageable US degree with STEM-OPT eligibility.
UL Lafayette suits Indian applicants targeting a debt-manageable US STEM or MBA degree with an all-in annual outlay near INR 40 lakh against a US regional-employer starting salary of USD 45,000 to 60,000. The Louisiana energy corridor provides direct OPT and long-term hiring pathways that give the degree measurable ROI within three years for petroleum, chemical, and computer science graduates who study in USA and secure post-study employment.
UL Lafayette is not the right fit for applicants prioritising a top-100 US News ranking, a coastal-metro campus experience, or heavy pre-existing brand recognition among Indian employers; those profiles should consider University of Texas at Arlington or Arizona State University as realistic alternatives with a comparable public-university fee band.
