Minnesota State University Moorhead Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

MSUM sets a moderate academic bar for Indian applicants across both undergraduate and graduate tracks, with English proficiency being the single hard filter.

MSUM PG Admission Requirements

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum equivalent of a US baccalaureate, verified by WES, ECE or a NACES-accredited firm (typical CGPA 5.5 to 6.0 out of 10 recommended)
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 78-80 or TOEFL PBT 550; IELTS 6.5; Duolingo English Test 120
  • Credential evaluation: Course-by-course transcript evaluation from WES or ECE certifying the Indian degree as equivalent to a US bachelor’s
  • Financial proof: USD 26,198 to USD 34,514 (INR 24.75 lakh to INR 32.62 lakh) in bank statements for the first year

MSUM UG Admission Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with minimum 55% (2.5 GPA equivalent on a 4.0 scale)
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 61 (or 2026 scale 3.5+); IELTS 5.5; Duolingo 95; PTE Academic 50; SAT 480 EBRW; ACT 18 English/Writing
  • Financial proof: Bank statement showing USD 29,023 (INR 27.43 lakh); tax returns and mortgages not accepted

Key insight: MSUM waives the English test only when the applicant has completed a full bachelor’s degree in an English-medium institution. Indian students from Class 12 English-medium schools still need to submit one of the four accepted tests.

Minnesota State University Moorhead Acceptance Rate 2027

MSUM has an undergraduate acceptance rate of 65%, published by US News in the 2026 Best Colleges edition. The rate places it in the accessible tier of US public universities, meaning admission is likely for applicants who meet the 2.5 GPA and English test minimums.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202665%Stable
202565%Stable

[Source: US News Best Colleges 2026]

The rate has held steady in the mid-60s band for the past two cycles. Graduate acceptance rates are not officially disclosed programme by programme, though the Business Analytics MS and MBA typically report competitive but non-selective intake.

Reality check: For an Indian applicant with CGPA 6.0/10, IELTS 6.5 and a clean academic record, the practical admit probability at MSUM sits well above the headline 65% figure. The bigger gate is F-1 visa interview readiness, not the university’s own admission decision.

  • Location: Downtown Moorhead, 5 minutes from Fargo (ND); Hector International Airport is 15 minutes by cab

US News also lists MSUM with a global research score of 59.35 in its wider global comparison, placing it at global rank #3064. The Business, Nursing and Education programmes have earned MSUM notable regional recognition in the Midwest.

Key insight: The US News Regional #49 placement matters for Indian applicants because US immigration and employer recognition treat US regional accreditation on the same footing as national rankings. MSUM’s regional accreditation qualifies graduates for OPT, H-1B and standard credential recognition in India.

MSUM Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

MSUM reports strong post-graduation outcomes anchored by its regional employer network in the Fargo-Moorhead metro and broader Midwest.

  • Placement network: Regional employers span healthcare, banking, tech services and public administration; on-campus career fairs run twice yearly
  • Post-study work: 12-month OPT for non-STEM graduates; 36-month OPT for STEM designated programmes (Business Analytics, Cybersecurity, Computer Science)
  • Median starting salary (market median): USD 58,000 to USD 72,000 for masters graduates in Business, Tech and Nursing tracks (INR 54.81 lakh to INR 68.04 lakh)
  • MBA median salary (market median): USD 68,000 to USD 82,000 (INR 64.26 lakh to INR 77.49 lakh) in Midwest US markets
  • Career support: Dedicated Career Development Center with resume, interview and F-1 to H-1B transition advising

Insider note: Indian STEM graduates from MSUM commonly convert their OPT to H-1B through Fargo and Minneapolis employers. Sanford Health, Microsoft (Fargo campus) and Bell Bank are recurring recruiters for tech and analytics roles.

Minnesota State University Moorhead vs Peer Universities

The most relevant peers for MSUM are other Minnesota State system institutions and regional Midwest publics with comparable acceptance rates and international tuition.

North Dakota State UniversityNational #29922,000 / INR 20.79 lakh (market median)Research university with stronger PhD tracks

[Source: US News Best Colleges 2026]

MSUM stands out for two reasons: the automatic in-state tuition brings sticker fees to the lowest in its regional peer set, and the Fargo-Moorhead metro carries a lower cost of living than Mankato or St. Cloud. For Indian applicants targeting affordable US publics with STEM OPT eligibility, MSUM’s price-to-outcome ratio is competitive.

MSUM does not match research-intensive peers like North Dakota State on doctoral output or research funding, so applicants targeting PhD tracks should compare offers carefully.

Minnesota State University Moorhead is best suited for cost-conscious Indian applicants seeking a US masters or bachelors degree with strong career support and STEM-eligible OPT extensions. Total investment of USD 25,000 to USD 35,000 per year (INR 23.63 lakh to INR 33.08 lakh) against median masters starting salaries of USD 58,000 to USD 72,000 delivers a payback period well under 3 years for most graduates. The automatic in-state tuition waiver and F-1 to OPT to H-1B pathway are the two decisive advantages over comparable regional publics.

MSUM is not the right fit for applicants targeting global brand recognition, research-heavy PhDs, or Ivy-tier employer networks. Candidates with those goals should compare against North Dakota State or the larger University of Minnesota Twin Cities for a broader research and recruiting footprint.

Minnesota State University Moorhead FAQs

Ques. What is the application fee for MSUM international students?

Ans. The MSUM international application fee is USD 20 (approximately INR 1,890) for both undergraduate and graduate applicants. It is paid online at the time of submission through the university’s application portal. MSUM does not offer a routine application fee waiver for Indian applicants outside of specific partner agreements, so budget the fee into your application costs.

Ques. Does MSUM require GRE or GMAT for masters admission?

Ans. MSUM does not require GRE or GMAT scores for the MBA, MS Business Analytics or MS Cybersecurity programmes. This waiver applies to all Indian applicants and removes a significant test-prep burden. A handful of specialized graduate programmes may request GRE for supplementary review, but the flagship business and tech masters run test-optional as of the 2027 cycle.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at MSUM?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at MSUM can work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorization tied to a course, or Optional Practical Training after the first academic year. On-campus wages range from USD 10.85 to USD 15 per hour in library, dining and lab assistant roles.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers recognise Minnesota State University Moorhead?

Ans. MSUM is recognised by all major Indian education loan providers including SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Avanse and Prodigy Finance. Public sector banks offer collateral-backed loans up to INR 40 lakh, while NBFCs like Credila and Avanse cover the full cost of attendance. Prodigy Finance offers no-collateral loans specifically for STEM masters students.

Ques. How does the MSUM dependent visa policy work for spouses?

Ans. Spouses and children under 21 of MSUM F-1 students can apply for F-2 dependent visas. F-2 holders cannot work in the US, but can enroll in part-time study or full-time K-12 education. The primary applicant must show additional financial proof of USD 7,000 for the first dependent and USD 6,000 for each additional dependent (INR 6.62 lakh and INR 5.67 lakh respectively).

Ques. What triggers a conditional offer at Minnesota State University Moorhead?

Ans. MSUM issues conditional offers when the academic record meets the minimum but the English test score falls below the required cut-off. Applicants can either retake the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo test, or enroll in the university’s Intensive English Program on campus to bridge the requirement. Conditional offers convert to full admission once English proof is submitted.

Ques. How long does WES credential evaluation take for MSUM applications?

Ans. WES credential evaluation for Indian degrees takes 8 to 12 weeks from the date all documents are received, with an expedited 5 day option available at extra cost. Indian applicants should send transcripts, provisional certificates and mark sheets directly from their university to WES using the sealed envelope route. Budget USD 200 to USD 300 (INR 18,900 to INR 28,350) for the course-by-course evaluation MSUM requires.

Ques. Is the MSUM MBA STEM designated for OPT extension?

Ans. The core one-year MSUM MBA is not STEM designated and qualifies for the standard 12-month OPT window. However, the MS Business Analytics and MS Cybersecurity programmes carry STEM designation, granting graduates a 24-month OPT extension for a total of 36 months post-graduation work authorization. Indian applicants targeting long US work runways should pick the analytics or cybersecurity route.

My overall experience at Minnesota State University Moorhead has been great. I have learned a lot but sometimes I wish I went to a bigger school. I chose this because of the financial I could pay for it compared to other colleges, and my classes transferred.
