Central Michigan University offers 10+ merit and need scholarships, of which 9 are accessible to Indian applicants across UG, PG, and PhD levels.
Most awards apply automatically at admission, so Indian students rarely file separate paperwork for the biggest tuition cuts. The stack matters more than any single award.
- Standard UG tuition (2026-27): USD 21,600 (INR 20.61 Lakhs) lower division; USD 22,800 (INR 21.76 Lakhs) upper division.
- With International President’s Award: Indian students pay the US resident rate, cutting roughly USD 9,024 (INR 8.61 Lakhs) per year off tuition.
- With President + Scholar + Opportunity stack: Net UG tuition drops to about USD 7,576 (INR 7.23 Lakhs) per year.
- Next Spring 2027 deadline: November 15, 2026 (tentative, most programmes).
Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 USD = INR 95.42 as of August 2026. "US resident rate" refers to the in-state tuition that Michigan residents pay, roughly 42% less than the international sticker rate.

Central Michigan University Scholarships for UG Students
CMU auto-considers Indian freshmen and transfers for three stacking awards worth up to USD 14,024 (INR 13.38 Lakhs) per year on lower-division tuition. Two additional competitive awards can push the total towards a full-ride package.
| Scholarship | Value (USD / INR) | Duration | Eligibility | How to Apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| International President’s Award | US resident tuition rate; saves USD 9,024 (INR 8.61 Lakhs)/year lower, USD 8,952 (INR 8.54 Lakhs) upper | 4 years | Admitted international freshman with a strong Class 12 record | Automatic on admission |
| International Scholar Award | USD 4,000 (INR 3.82 Lakhs) per year | 4 years freshman; 3 years transfer | Merit-based on academic record | Automatic on admission |
| International Opportunity Award | USD 1,000 (INR 95,421) per year | 4 years freshman; 3 years transfer | Merit-based; stacks with the two above | Automatic on admission |
| Leader Advancement Scholarship | USD 2,000 (INR 1.91 Lakhs) per year; total USD 8,000 (INR 7.63 Lakhs) | 4 years | Demonstrated leadership plus 3.5 GPA equivalent | Separate essay and interview by tentative December 1, 2026 |
| Centralis Scholarship | Up to full tuition, fees, room, and board | 4 years | Top 5-10% Class 12 rank; competitive interview | Separate nomination and interview; tentative November 15, 2026 deadline |
| Phi Theta Kappa Award | USD 1,000 (INR 95,421) per year | 3 years | PTK member transfer with 3.5 GPA | Automatic for verified PTK transfers |
The President’s, Scholar, and Opportunity awards form the default Indian UG package at CMU. Together they trim lower-division tuition by USD 14,024 (INR 13.38 Lakhs) per year, bringing net tuition to roughly USD 7,576 (INR 7.23 Lakhs).
Leader Advancement adds another USD 2,000 (INR 1.91 Lakhs) if the essay and interview clear. Centralis is the only route to a genuine full ride, though nomination is rare for international freshmen.
For deeper cost detail, see the Central Michigan University fees page.
Central Michigan University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Master’s applicants have four funding vehicles that either cut the sticker rate or add a monthly stipend. Graduate assistantships remain the single largest funder for Indian PG students at CMU.
| Scholarship | Value (USD / INR) | Duration | Eligibility | How to Apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Out-of-State Tuition Merit Award | Domestic tuition rate; saves roughly USD 400+ per credit hour | Programme length | Strong undergraduate GPA (typically 3.3+) plus GRE/GMAT where required | With the graduate application |
| Neighboring Regions Merit Award | Domestic tuition rate | Programme length | Applicants from listed neighboring US states or select regions | Automatic based on address on file |
| Legacy Tuition Award | Resident tuition rate | Programme length | Direct family alumni link to CMU | With the graduate application |
| Graduate Assistantship | Variable stipend plus tuition waiver; typical range USD 8,000-14,000 (INR 7.63-13.36 Lakhs)/year | Semester, renewable | Department nomination; strong academic and research profile | Contact target department directly |
Most Indian master’s admits target the Out-of-State Tuition Merit Award first because it applies to any programme and needs no separate form. Neighboring Regions rarely applies to Indian students unless they transfer in from a nearby US institution.
Reddit Insight: Indian MS admits on r/gradadmissions consistently report that securing a CMU graduate assistantship is department-driven, and emailing the graduate coordinator with a one-page research summary two months before the application deadline moves candidates ahead of the queue.
For MBA applicants, the flat rate is USD 935 per credit and the Out-of-State waiver still applies. See the CMU admission page for programme-wise entry requirements.
India-Specific Scholarships at Central Michigan University
CMU does not run a dedicated India-only scholarship, unlike some larger US flagships. However, every internal award listed above is fully open to Indian citizens on an F-1 visa.
Indian freshmen are auto-considered for three UG awards on admission, so no extra form is needed to trigger the default package:
- International President’s Award gives the US resident tuition rate.
- International Scholar Award adds USD 4,000 (INR 3.82 Lakhs) per year.
- International Opportunity Award adds another USD 1,000 (INR 95,421) per year.
An Indian applicant with a 75%+ Class 12 aggregate is very likely to receive the resident-rate cut plus both cash awards. The financial letter usually arrives within 3-4 weeks of the offer.
For India-nationality-linked funding, Indian applicants should pair the CMU internal package with an external Government of India or trust scholarship (see Section 5). Fulbright-Nehru and Inlaks are the most common pairings for CMU master’s admits.
Reddit Insight: Multiple r/USAstudents threads confirm CMU issues the President’s Award automatically to admitted freshmen with no separate application, and the award appears directly on the admission financial letter without any nudging from the student.
Central Michigan University PhD Scholarships
Doctoral tuition sits at USD 1,162 per credit (INR 1.11 Lakhs), so a full PhD without funding runs above USD 37,306 (INR 35.60 Lakhs) per year in total cost. Almost all funded Indian PhDs at CMU run through assistantships or fellowships, not scholarships.
| Funding Route | Value (USD / INR) | Duration | Eligibility | How to Apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Assistantship (Research / Teaching) | Monthly stipend plus full tuition waiver; typical range USD 14,000-22,000 (INR 13.36-21.00 Lakhs)/year | Semester, renewable across 4-5 years | Department nomination; strong research fit | Direct email to prospective faculty advisor |
| Out-of-State Tuition Merit Award | Domestic tuition rate; saves about USD 400+ per credit | Programme length | Strong master’s GPA | With the doctoral application |
| Doctoral Fellowships (department-specific) | Variable; typically covers stipend plus conference travel | 1-2 years | Advanced PhD candidates in the research phase | Nomination by dissertation chair |
The realistic Indian PhD path at CMU is to secure a research assistantship first, then layer the Out-of-State waiver so the department pays a lower per-credit rate. This combination typically covers tuition entirely and leaves USD 12,000-18,000 (INR 11.45-17.18 Lakhs) as annual take-home.
Living cost in Mount Pleasant runs about USD 13,360 (INR 12.75 Lakhs) per year for food and housing, so a mid-range assistantship covers core expenses without loans. See the Central Michigan University overview for campus context.
External Government Scholarships for Central Michigan University Applicants
Indian students headed to CMU can layer an external India-side award on top of the university’s internal package. The six most useful options for CMU applicants are below.
| Scholarship | Value | Level | Deadline (Tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship | Full tuition plus stipend plus travel; USIEF-funded | Master’s | May 15, 2026 (annual cycle) |
| Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarship | Up to USD 100,000 (INR 95.42 Lakhs) total | Master’s, PhD | Tentative March 15, 2026 |
| KC Mahindra Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad | Up to INR 10 Lakhs; top awards up to INR 25 Lakhs | Master’s | Tentative March 31, 2026 |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | INR 1-10 Lakhs loan plus INR 7,500 gift | Master’s, PhD | Tentative March 24, 2026 |
| Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship | 50% loan plus 50% grant covering tuition and living | Master’s, PhD | Tentative March 31, 2026 |
| Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Scholarship | Interest-free loan up to INR 20 Lakhs | Master’s | Tentative April 20, 2026 |
Fulbright-Nehru is the strongest pairing for CMU because it covers the full USD 33,220 (INR 31.71 Lakhs) master’s total cost. Indian admits combine it with the Out-of-State waiver to reduce liability if the fellowship gets partial approval.
Inlaks is highly competitive with fewer than 15 US awards per year. KC Mahindra and JN Tata are the more accessible fallbacks for CMU master’s admits.

Central Michigan University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian UG student can secure at CMU?
Ans. An admitted Indian freshman with a strong Class 12 record automatically receives the International President’s Award, Scholar Award, and Opportunity Award. Together these cut lower-division tuition by USD 14,024 (INR 13.38 Lakhs) per year, bringing net tuition to about USD 7,576 (INR 7.23 Lakhs). Adding Leader Advancement pushes annual savings to USD 16,024 (INR 15.29 Lakhs). Centralis, if awarded, delivers a full ride across tuition, fees, room, and board for 4 years.
Ques. When should Indian students apply to be considered for CMU scholarships?
Ans. For Spring 2027 intake, submit the CMU admission application by November 15, 2026 (tentative). For Fall 2027, target April to June 2027 to allow visa processing. Because the President’s, Scholar, and Opportunity awards are automatic on admission, applying early increases the odds of the strongest package. Leader Advancement and Centralis have separate essay tracks with tentative December 1, 2026 deadlines.
Ques. What GPA or academic score do Indian students need for the International President’s Award?
Ans. CMU has not published a hard cut-off, but admitted Indian students typically hold a 75% or higher Class 12 aggregate (roughly a 3.0 GPA). Because the award is automatic on admission, if the applicant clears the admission threshold, the President’s Award follows in the financial letter. Stronger scores of 85%+ often trigger the higher Scholar and Opportunity stack in the same letter.
Ques. What is the Centralis Scholarship and how does an Indian student get it?
Ans. Centralis is CMU’s top-tier undergraduate award, covering tuition, fees, room, and board for 4 years. Selection runs through a separate nomination plus interview, with a tentative November 15, 2026 deadline for Spring 2027 and July 2026 for Fall entries. Indian applicants need a top 5-10% Class 12 rank, evidence of leadership, and must clear a virtual interview panel. Fewer than 40 seats are awarded each cycle across the full applicant pool.
Ques. Do CMU scholarships cover living costs in Mount Pleasant?
Ans. Only Centralis covers room and board directly. For every other award, Indian students still pay USD 13,360 (INR 12.75 Lakhs) per year for food and housing separately. The realistic Indian UG budget after the President’s + Scholar + Opportunity stack works out to about USD 27,222 (INR 25.97 Lakhs) per year all-in, versus the USD 41,246 (INR 39.36 Lakhs) sticker cost.

- No scholarships available for our course and university. Not many can receive this. But we can get GA positions with this we can get one subject fee free. Part times are available on campus and basic needs and some can be saved.
- We get our pay once every 2 weeks. We can apply to different part times at different locations on campus. We get them immediately if we are lucky else it takes 6 months. 20 hours per weeks
- I live off campus. it is just walkable to the college main building where the classes are taken. I live in Douglas street and I highly recommend this.
- I found a senior who came in fall 2023 through telegram who helped me in finding this accommodation. There are many seniors in all the telegram groups. They will help us with any doubts that we have.

You could apply for a Graduate/Teaching assistance ship which would help you earn some bucks while you’re at university. - Your tuition fee is also waived off for the semesters you are working as GA or TA. It is competitive to get into, you need to prove you are capable of such a position.
- Online platforms and help from seniors. There are whatsapp groups and an Indian students association to help you get going.
- Monthly rent would be 400usd which includes a room and an attached wash. Utilities like electricity, gas etc are not included in the rent.
- Accommodation is just 5 mins away from the university and that is walking time. It’s very close.

Scholarship
- I received a scholarship for my studies and the GPA I got in my bachelor’s degree. This is given to students who have 3.0 and more than that out of 4.
- Also, every student can apply for a graduate assistantship, which is open to all. Every semester we have this chance to apply. Criteria is we have to have 4 GPa and good communication skills.
- My batchmates also received the scholarship, as they also have 3 GPA. Mostly every year, 30 to 40 students get the scholarships and graduate assistantships.
- Accommodation is super here. Its fabulous. We have well-maintained kitchens, bathrooms, and rooms. To find accommodation we have different websites and also university dorms, which are quite expensive but are very good and fabulous.
- We can expect to pay about $200 for each semester, excluding food. Monthly rent can reach up to 450$. Facilities are like kitchens and bathrooms.
- We have dining places separate where we can order food and eat. Especially students in hostels can use them with flex points, which can be bought while paying the hostel fees.

I chose this university because it offers dual specialization in information systems courses with project management and business data analytics. I want to become a senior business data analyst so this course is the best one possible for me to learn many things. Overall, it is very good with different cultures and people. The place is very peaceful and very calm and quite pleasant. Coming to academics we have the best professors who will guide us with many valuable lessons and insights to help me grow in my career.

My university atmosphere, infra and academics everything is perfect. As an international student, I feel very safe here on campus. Yes, we need to submit 3 LoRs and a SoP. I took LoRs from my professors in my undergrad and i wrote a SoP my self. For my major, this university provides a good quality of education and decent tuition fees.

Professors are always available through email and teams to clear your doubts regarding anything. Housing available for international students is also very affordable. There are plenty of opportunities for students on campus like SAP here in this college is very good.
