Master of Science [M.S] (Software Engineering)
Field of Study:
$61,510 /Yr
Carnegie Mellon University Master of Science (MS) in Software Engineering is a professional graduate degree delivered full-time and on campus at the Silicon Valley campus in Mountain View, California. The MS requires a relevant bachelor’s degree with computing foundations and takes three or four full-time semesters for Spring 2027 entry. At the 2026-27 published rate, calculated tuition for three or four semesters is US$92,265 (INR 88.29 Lakhs) to US$123,020 (INR 1.18 Crore).
The curriculum trains engineers to design, verify and deliver complex software through architecture, requirements, testing and team-based methods. It suits applicants who already enjoy substantial programming and systems preparation because foundational computing topics are assumed rather than taught. Silicon Valley projects, research options and the course-selection process add practical choice, while the tradeoff is a demanding professional schedule and high funding requirement.
- Core options cover functional programming, data science, databases, refactoring and software engineering economics.
- Graduate research and paid teaching assistant roles can become available after the first semester, subject to performance and openings.
- The Silicon Valley setting connects coursework with internships, technology talks, meetups and hackathons.
Current Admission Status
Applications for the Spring 2027 intake are Open. International student deadline: 31 August 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET (1 September 2026 at 9:29 a.m. IST).
Indian applicants must submit all materials and required English scores by the Eastern Time cutoff. The programme’s current GRE policy is optional for Spring 2027.

CMU MS Software Engineering Fees and Living Costs 2027
CMU’s 2026-27 published annual tuition for the College of Engineering master’s tier is US$61,510 (INR 58.86 Lakhs). The programme requires 97 units over three or four full-time semesters, so the current-rate tuition range frames the return on investment (ROI) decision.
Target-cycle fee basis: The table uses Carnegie Mellon University’s 2026-27 graduate rates and the current international application fee. Tuition, standard charges and the application fee remain separate because they are billed at different points.
| Fee item | Published amount | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Master’s tuition, academic year 2026-27 | US$61,510 | INR 58.86 Lakhs |
| Fall semester tuition | US$30,755 | INR 29.43 Lakhs |
| Spring semester tuition | US$30,755 | INR 29.43 Lakhs |
| Per-unit rate | US$855 | INR 81,815 |
| International application fee | US$75 | INR 7,177 |
| Student Activities Fee, academic year | US$248 | INR 23,731 |
| Transportation Fee, academic year | US$302 | INR 28,898 |
| Technology Fee, academic year | US$490 | INR 46,888 |
All INR conversions in the article use a conversion rate of USD 1 = INR 95.6902 as of 24 August 2026. Rates fluctuate daily, verify before applying.

The 97-unit structure makes the per-unit rate a reference rather than a replacement for semester billing. Three semesters produce calculated tuition of US$92,265 (INR 88.29 Lakhs), while four semesters produce US$123,020 (INR 1.18 Crore) at the current published rate. Future charges can change, so use the four-semester figure for initial funding capacity and revise it after the academic plan is confirmed.
- The current tuition range covers three or four full-time semesters, so applicants should budget for the longer route until an advisor confirms an accelerated plan.
- The US$855 (INR 81,815) per-unit rate does not automatically make a lighter load cheaper because the programme is designed around full-time semester study.
- The one-time US$75 (INR 7,177) application fee is non-refundable and must accompany the submitted application.
Cost of Living in Mountain View for CMU MS Software Engineering Students
Carnegie Mellon University’s Office of International Education publishes an annual Silicon Valley estimate for housing and food rather than a monthly rent breakdown. The estimate below keeps living costs, health insurance, books and university charges separate from tuition.
| Annual expense | Published or calculated amount | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Living expenses, housing and food | US$39,108 | INR 37.42 Lakhs |
| Health insurance | US$3,165 | INR 3.03 Lakhs |
| Books and supplies | US$2,400 | INR 2.30 Lakhs |
| Required-fee total calculated from current Student Financial Services lines | US$1,040 | INR 99,518 |
| Non-tuition planning total calculated from the rows above | US$45,713 | INR 43.74 Lakhs |
The international estimate page lists US$45,659 (INR 43.69 Lakhs) plus tuition using a US$1,006 (INR 96,264) fee line. The current Student Financial Services page lists US$1,040 (INR 99,518) across standard required fees, so the table uses the newer fee lines and records the official difference.
The resulting US$45,713 (INR 43.74 Lakhs) is a calculated non-tuition planning figure, not a university-published programme total. Adding it to one academic year of tuition gives a calculated first-year budget of US$107,223 (INR 1.03 Crore), excluding optional loan fees and future rate changes.
Living expenses are estimated housing and food costs, not a guaranteed rent quote, while the health figure uses an estimated student-only premium. No separate residence-price range is published on the checked international estimate page, so applicants should request current housing quotes before signing a lease.
Verify the current fee lines on the CMU graduate tuition page before submitting an application because the university says actual charges can vary by programme and academic period.

Student perspective
One individual 2023 review described supportive teaching and exposure alongside expensive fees and rigorous academics; use the student review only to stress-test your budget and workload assumptions.
These comments are anecdotal and do not replace official Carnegie Mellon University data.
ROI reality: The current-rate tuition range and Silicon Valley estimate require a funding plan for at least one full academic year. Use the four-semester tuition figure for a conservative first review, then update it with your confirmed course plan.
CMU MS Software Engineering Admission 2027
Admission is built for applicants with a relevant bachelor’s degree and strong computing foundations, not for beginners changing into software engineering. CMU does not publish a numeric grade point average (GPA) cutoff or a GRE minimum for Spring 2027. It instead expects evidence across core computing subjects and software practice.
Academic Eligibility for CMU MS Software Engineering
The university lists computer science, computer engineering or a related computing degree as typical preparation. Applicants from non-computing degrees need qualifying coursework and significant software work, while foundational topics are not taught inside the programme.
| Requirement | Current official position | Indian applicant action |
|---|---|---|
| Relevant degree | Undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related computing field is expected. | Map each transcript course to the listed foundation areas before applying. |
| Computing foundations | Algorithms and complexity, data structures, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, computer architecture, compilers, operating systems, databases, web programming, object-oriented programming and programming languages. | Identify missing subjects and explain equivalent projects or work in the application. |
| Non-computing background | Exceptional applicants may qualify with the required foundations and significant software work or experience. | Do not rely on a general programming certificate to replace missing degree-level preparation. |
| Course-selection fit | The application permits up to 10 course choices, and the first-choice list must include Foundations of Software Engineering, course 18-652. | Choose courses that show a coherent software engineering goal rather than listing unrelated electives. |
| Application materials | Statement of Purpose, resume, transcripts, three recommendations and required English scores are part of a complete application. | Use the resume and Statement of Purpose to connect coursework, software technologies and the selected core courses. |
| Programme completion rule | At least quality point average (QPA) 3.0 on CMU’s 4.0 scale is required in courses used for the 97 units, approximately 75% or cumulative grade point average (CGPA) 7.5 on 10 for Indian planning only. | CMU makes the final equivalency decision, so treat the Indian figure as a planning estimate rather than an admission cutoff. |
No programme-specific ranking is published for this degree, so an overall university position is not used as evidence of course quality or employment. The academic screen instead turns on foundation coverage, software evidence and whether the chosen courses match the applicant’s stated goal.
The strongest application makes gaps visible before the committee finds them. A transcript with algorithms and operating systems but no software architecture or testing should explain equivalent engineering work. The core assumes students can engage immediately.
For the exact foundation list and course choices, review the official software engineering curriculum before finalising the application narrative.
English Language Proficiency
English Language Proficiency (ELP) is a required score for international applicants unless a specific university waiver condition applies. The university accepts the DET (Duolingo English Test), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
Each test has separate component minimums, which means an overall score alone is insufficient. CMU’s current page still publishes the TOEFL 0 to 120 scale and says MyBest scores are not accepted.
| Test or route | Minimum overall score | Component minimums or policy |
|---|---|---|
| DET | 115 | Literacy 105, Comprehension 115, Production 90 and Conversation 95. |
| TOEFL iBT, 0 to 120 scale currently published | 86 | Reading 22, Listening 22, Speaking 20 and Writing 22; one test date; MyBest not accepted. |
| IELTS | 7.0 | Reading 6.5, Listening 6.5, Speaking 6.0 and Writing 6.0. |
| Published waiver conditions | Not a score route | Waiver may apply to graduates of a U.S. university by enrollment, CMU students or alumni and citizens of the United Kingdom or Canada. |
Indian applicants should not assume that an English-medium Indian degree creates a waiver because India is not listed among CMU’s current exceptions. Verify the score-report policy before submission because the checked page does not publish a revised TOEFL 1.0 to 6.0 scale.
- GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores are optional for Spring 2027, and CMU publishes no GRE or GPA cutoff.
- Book an English test early enough to clear every component minimum because a strong overall score cannot repair a missed subscore.
- Use the application to explain any missing foundation course with a transcript equivalent, software project or substantial engineering work.
Tip for Indian students: The absence of a published GPA cutoff does not remove the foundation test. Build a subject-by-subject transcript map and check every ELP subscore before submitting.

How to Build the MS Software Engineering Application
The Statement of Purpose should show that the applicant understands software engineering as an engineering discipline with requirements, architecture, verification and delivery concerns. It should also explain why the Silicon Valley course structure fits the applicant’s preparation and intended work.
The resume should identify software technologies and proficiency, while the recommendations and transcript should verify the foundation behind the selected courses. CMU initially accepts unofficial transcripts, but admitted students must provide official documents when requested.
- Use the first-choice course list to connect the mandatory Foundations of Software Engineering course with a specific architecture, testing, requirements or systems goal.
- Describe substantial software projects with the technologies used, the applicant’s individual responsibility and the engineering decision that changed the result.
- Choose three recommenders who can evaluate technical preparation and software work rather than only confirm attendance.
- Arrange the required English score report and transcript records before the portal deadline because incomplete files cannot be repaired by a strong essay.

Application tip: Spring 2027 closes on 31 August 2026 at the Eastern Time cutoff, while Fall 2027 offers early review on 15 December 2026. Submit the stronger foundation-led file rather than relying on a late incomplete application.
CMU MS Software Engineering Scholarships 2027
Carnegie Mellon University does not offer a departmental fellowship covering tuition and living costs for this professional MS. The Electrical and Computer Engineering department describes the degree as primarily self-supported, although paid assistant roles may become available after the first semester.
External awards can reduce the funding gap, but neither award below should be treated as a CMU tuition waiver. AAUW means the American Association of University Women, whose International Fellowship supports women pursuing a first graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship is need-based and supports eligible women studying full-time in residence. Its rules require a return-home intention and additional resources, so the maximum award does not replace a full funding plan.
Current published award windows: The awards below have 2027-28 dates that can overlap a Spring 2027 start. Eligibility depends on admission status, nationality, gender, study stage and the awarder’s final decision.
| Award | Value in USD | INR equivalent | Eligibility and timing | Application route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AAUW International Fellowship, 2027-28 | US$20,000 | INR 19.14 Lakhs | Women who are non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents, admitted or enrolled in a first master’s, with GPA 3.5 on 4.0, approximately 87.5% or CGPA 8.75 on 10 for planning; closes 17 September 2026 at 5:00 p.m. ET. | Apply through the AAUW fellowship portal; award notification is scheduled for March 2027. |
| P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship, 2027-28 | Up to US$12,500 | Up to INR 11.96 Lakhs | Women outside the United States and Canada seeking an advanced degree in residence, with a full year of formal coursework remaining; eligibility forms run 15 September to 15 December 2026. | Complete the application by 15 March 2027 if not yet enrolled; award notification is scheduled for May 2027. |
AAUW’s stipend is paid in two instalments and has a September 2027 programme-start condition, so Spring 2027 applicants must retain admission proof and confirm the course timeline. P.E.O. explicitly says its award is not intended to cover all academic or personal expenses and requires adequate additional resources.
- Apply for AAUW only if the first-master’s, non-U.S.-citizen, full-time STEM and minimum GPA conditions all fit your record.
- Start the International Peace Scholarship eligibility-form process in its published window and keep evidence of funds beyond the award maximum.
- Do not count a paid teaching or research assistant role as confirmed funding before admission because openings depend on performance, resources and timing.
Use the CMU scholarship information page for related funding navigation, then verify each external award’s current eligibility before relying on it.
Scholarship reality: The published awards are partial and profile-specific, while CMU identifies the professional MS as primarily self-supported. Secure the core tuition and living budget first, then treat awards as risk reduction.
CMU MS Software Engineering Salary 2027
The current official MS Software Engineering materials do not publish a course-specific salary, offer rate or graduate employment report. That absence matters because a market wage cannot prove what this programme’s graduates typically earn.
The programme page does identify Silicon Valley career activity, internships and employer examples including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Salesforce, Cisco and Nvidia. Those examples show reported employer presence and ecosystem access, but they do not establish a placement rate, recruiter relationship or typical graduate outcome.
Salary Evidence and Return on Investment
The closest available figure is an external job-market benchmark for software developers, not a CMU course-cohort outcome. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a May 2024 median annual wage of US$133,080 (INR 1.27 Crore) for software developers.
| Evidence scope | Published cohort or measure | Salary in USD | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| External job-market benchmark | U.S. software developers, May 2024 median annual wage | US$133,080 | INR 1.27 Crore |
Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook.
The BLS benchmark is useful for market context, not as a forecast for a CMU graduate. Review the official software developer wage benchmark alongside the role, location and experience level you expect to pursue.
For this professional degree, return on investment (ROI) is a funding decision rather than a guaranteed payback calculation. CMU does not publish the course-level salary and offer inputs needed for a defensible payback period. The decision should focus on verified cost, work authorization and your own offer evidence.
- Tuition exposure: Current-rate tuition is US$92,265 (INR 88.29 Lakhs) for three semesters or US$123,020 (INR 1.18 Crore) for four.
- Living exposure: The current Silicon Valley planning estimate is US$45,713 (INR 43.74 Lakhs) before optional loan fees, so reserve funds beyond tuition.
- Outcome evidence: The only salary figure available is the external US$133,080 (INR 1.27 Crore) median, so never treat it as a CMU placement result or repayment guarantee.
- Work-window risk: A qualifying F-1 graduate may receive 12 months of OPT and a further 24-month STEM extension under current eligibility rules.
- India-return scenario: Because no course salary is published, compare your own India-return offer with the calculated cost range before accepting education debt.
Take-home pay varies with federal, state and payroll taxes, so use the Internal Revenue Service tax withholding estimator with a specific state and salary scenario before choosing debt.
ROI reality: CMU provides a specialised software engineering curriculum and Silicon Valley access, but it does not publish course-level earnings. Approve the degree financially only after testing the four-semester cost against your verified funding and work plan.
USA Visa for CMU MS Software Engineering Students 2027
Indian applicants normally use the F-1 student classification for this full-time, on-campus degree. The current student visa application fee is US$185 (INR 17,703), while the I-901 SEVIS fee is US$350 (INR 33,492).
The I-901 fee supports the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) record used before the visa interview. A Form I-20 is the university-issued eligibility document, and its funding figure should be kept separate from CMU’s living-cost estimate and any later visa requirement.
Post-Study Work and Sponsorship Planning
The visa route offers a possible work bridge after graduation, but it does not guarantee employment or permanent residence. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) rules and the employer’s petition determine the available work period.
- Post-study work: Post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) can last up to 12 months, while a qualifying STEM degree may support a further 24-month extension under current rules.
- Skilled-worker sponsorship: H-1B employment requires the employer to pay the higher of the actual wage or prevailing wage for the specific occupation and location.
- Permanent residence: An F-1 student status does not create a fixed green-card timeline, so treat employment-based sponsorship as a separate process with changing eligibility and priority dates.
- Dependants: An F-2 classification can cover a spouse and unmarried minor children, but F-2 dependants do not receive employment authorization.
The official U.S. student visa instructions should be checked again for interview steps, issuance restrictions and fee changes. Apply the current government rules to the exact start date shown on the I-20.
Check Out: USA student visa guidance
Visa reality: The F-1 route can support study and a limited post-study work window, but sponsorship and residence are separate decisions. Confirm the degree’s current STEM eligibility and employer requirements before using a 24-month extension in your financial plan.
CMU’s Silicon Valley MS Software Engineering fits an applicant with strong computing foundations who wants software architecture, requirements and verification in a full-time professional setting. The 97-unit structure and practical course choices make it a poor fit for applicants still building basic programming or systems knowledge. Its material tradeoff is funding US$61,510 (INR 58.86 Lakhs) annual tuition alongside a calculated US$45,713 (INR 43.74 Lakhs) annual non-tuition plan. For Spring 2027, submit the complete file by 31 August 2026 at 11:59 p.m. ET and verify the current work-authorization rules before accepting an offer.
