Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh admissions are holistic and highly selective, screening Indian applicants on Class XII marks around 90 percent for undergraduate seats and on a strong Bachelor’s with prerequisite coursework for master’s programmes.

  • Next Fall 2027 deadline: Undergraduate Early Decision closes 2 November 2026; MSCS graduate early deadline is 18 November 2026.
  • Base tuition and fee: $69,702 per year (around ₹66.50 Lakhs) for undergraduates, plus a $75 (around ₹7,155) Common Application fee.
  • Eligibility floor: Class XII with 90 percent plus for UG; Bachelor’s degree with strong grades for PG; IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 102 minimum.
  • Acceptance rate: 11.07 percent for the Class of 2029, with the School of Computer Science admitting under 5 percent.

Indian students most commonly target BS Computer Science, MS Artificial Intelligence and Innovation, and the Tepper Full-Time MBA. Applicant threads on r/ApplyingToCollege and shared decision spreadsheets confirm CMU is a reach for most Indian candidates, though the strong US tech placement pipeline balances the sticker shock. See the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh overview for the broader placements and rankings snapshot.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Eligibility for Indian Students

Carnegie Mellon does not publish a fixed Class XII cutoff, but admitted Indian applicants typically post 90 percent plus in the CBSE, ICSE or state boards. Master’s applicants need a strong four-year Bachelor’s, and the School of Computer Science expects prerequisite coursework in mathematics and computing.

  • UG general entry: Class XII with 90 percent plus, strong Math and Science for STEM tracks.
  • PG general entry: Bachelor’s with a 3.0 GPA equivalent (around 75 percent) and prerequisite subject depth.
  • IELTS minimum (UG): 7.5 overall with 7.5 in every band.
  • TOEFL iBT minimum (UG): 102 overall with 25 plus per section (post-January 2026 revised scale: 5 overall).
  • Duolingo (UG): 135 overall; Cambridge English: 191 overall.
  • PG English floor: TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.5 at the School of Computer Science and most other graduate schools.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh IELTS Waiver Options

Carnegie Mellon does not publish a Medium of Instruction waiver for undergraduates from Indian English-medium schools. However, the Tepper Full-Time MBA waives the TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score if the applicant’s Bachelor’s degree was earned at an institution where instruction is in English. Many Indian universities qualify, so Indian MBA applicants can request a Tepper English waiver at the application stage.

Insider note: Even where a waiver is technically available, Tepper accepts high test scores as supporting evidence for candidates whose English writing sample or video essay is borderline.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Carnegie Mellon international applicants page for your chosen program before applying.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PG Programs

Carnegie Mellon offers over 100 master’s programs across seven colleges, with the School of Computer Science, College of Engineering (CIT), Heinz College and Tepper School accounting for most Indian intake. Base graduate tuition sits around $29,570 per semester (around ₹28.21 Lakhs per semester) for most departments; see the detailed fee breakdown for the full per-program picture.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official CMU CS master’s admissions page for your chosen program before applying.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh UG Programs

Undergraduate applicants apply to one of CMU’s seven colleges, each with distinct academic gates. Base tuition is $69,702 per year (around ₹66.50 Lakhs) for the Class of 2030, and total sticker cost of attendance runs $93,614 (around ₹89.31 Lakhs). For a per-course breakdown, see the course-wise fees breakdown.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Tepper MBA Admissions

The Tepper Full-Time MBA is a two-year, STEM-designated program with a base tuition of $42,093 per semester (around ₹40.16 Lakhs per semester) plus $1,036 in fees. The class carries roughly 37 percent international students, and Tepper requires GMAT, GMAT Focus, GRE or the Executive Assessment, with the median GMAT for the Class of 2027 at 707 (10th Edition). For funding options, see the Tepper funding options for Indian students.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh MBA Deadline Pattern

Tepper follows a four-round pattern per year. The 2026-2027 application cycle opens in August 2026 on the official Tepper Full-Time MBA page. Applicants should target these windows:

  • Round 1: Late September 2026, applications open in August.
  • Round 2: Early January 2027, best fit for Indian scholarship applicants.
  • Round 3: Early March 2027, the final round for international applicants.
  • Round 4: Early May 2027, restricted to domestic US applicants only.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh MBA English Waiver

Tepper waives TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo if your Bachelor’s degree was earned at an English-medium institution. Applicants without a waiver need TOEFL iBT with 25 per section, IELTS 7 with 7 in each band, or Duolingo 120. The application fee is $200 (around ₹19,080) and one professional letter of recommendation is required. Evaluative interviews follow application review and happen by invitation only.

Reality check: Tepper does not publish a hard work-experience minimum, but the Class of 2027 averaged around five years of pre-MBA experience.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PhD Admissions

CMU’s PhD programs are department-run, with the School of Computer Science, College of Engineering and Heinz College carrying the largest Indian intake. All admitted PhD students receive full tuition remission, a stipend, health insurance and a fee package for the length of the degree.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PhD Funding

For academic year 2026-2027, the base PhD stipend at the Machine Learning Department is $3,650 per month (around ₹3.48 Lakhs per month), with dependent allowances of $365 per eligible dependent. The department covers tuition, mandatory university fees and 50 percent of the health insurance premium (student premium is $3,093 per year, around ₹2.95 Lakhs). External fellowships such as Fulbright-Nehru top up the base package rather than replace it.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PhD Application Steps

  1. Identify 3 to 5 faculty whose research aligns with your goals.
  2. Draft a research statement referencing specific labs and papers.
  3. Secure three academic letters of recommendation, ideally from research supervisors.
  4. Submit GRE where required (waived at most SCS PhD programs) and TOEFL or IELTS.
  5. Apply through the department portal by the mid-December deadline for most SCS PhDs.

Insider note: Basic PhD funding for CMU’s Computer Science department is identical for domestic and international students; there is no separate international rate.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Application Process

Undergraduate applicants apply through the Common Application. Graduate applicants apply directly to each department. The process below follows the undergraduate route, with graduate-specific notes in brackets.

  1. Create your account: Register on the Common Application portal and select Carnegie Mellon as a college of interest.
  2. Choose a college: Pick your CMU school (Computer Science, Engineering, Fine Arts, Tepper, Heinz, Dietrich or Mellon College of Science) before completing the CMU supplement.
  3. Upload transcripts: Attach your Class XII marksheets (or provisional Bachelor’s transcript for PG), with certified English translations if issued in Hindi or a regional language.
  4. Submit English scores: Send IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo or Cambridge results directly through the test provider using the CMU institution code.
  5. Complete recommendations: Two counsellor or teacher letters for UG; two to three academic or professional letters for PG.
  6. Pay the application fee: Pay the $75 (around ₹7,155) application fee on the Common Application, or the program-specific fee for graduate applications ($80 to $200).
  7. Track your portal: Watch the CMU applicant portal for interview invites, portfolio review requests and decision releases.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Admission Decisions Timeline

Undergraduate ED decisions release by 15 December 2026; Regular Decision offers arrive by 1 April 2027 and require an enrollment reply by 1 May 2027. Graduate decisions vary by department but most SCS master’s programs release rolling decisions between February and April.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Documents Required

Indian applicants should assemble the paperwork below before opening the application form. All non-English documents need a certified English translation. Original documents are not mailed at the application stage; certified scans are enough.

  • Valid Indian passport bio page (with at least six months of validity beyond intended enrollment).
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets (UG applicants).
  • Bachelor’s degree transcript and provisional certificate (PG applicants).
  • English proficiency score report sent directly by ETS, IELTS, Duolingo or Cambridge.
  • GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment score report where required (Tepper MBA, some PhDs).
  • Statement of Purpose (PG) or Common Application personal essay (UG).
  • Two to three letters of recommendation from teachers, professors or supervisors.
  • Updated CV or resume (PG and MBA applicants).
  • Portfolio for Fine Arts, Architecture and Design programs.
  • Financial certification form and bank statement showing one year of tuition and living cost.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Acceptance Rate

Carnegie Mellon admitted 3,859 students from 34,867 applicants for the Class of 2029, an overall acceptance rate of 11.07 percent. The single institutional number, however, hides very different competitions by college.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh SCS Cutoffs

The School of Computer Science admits under 5 percent of applicants and drives most Indian rejection outcomes, since Indian applicants concentrate heavily on CS. Dietrich College (humanities) admits around 24 percent, so applying to the college that fits your academic profile matters more here than at most US universities. See the ranking band for CMU’s global standing in Computer Science, Engineering and Business.

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Round Trends

Early Decision offers a real boost. The Class of 2029 ED acceptance rate was 20.63 percent (553 admits from 2,680 applicants) versus 10.27 percent in Regular Decision. ED works only if you can absorb the full $93,614 (around ₹89.31 Lakhs) cost without CMU aid.

Insider note: Carnegie Mellon does not offer need-based or merit financial aid to international undergraduates, so the ED bump is realistically usable only by fully funded Indian families.

USA F-1 Visa for Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Applicants

Admitted Indian students at Carnegie Mellon apply for the F-1 student visa. After accepting the offer, CMU’s Office of International Education issues the Form I-20, which is required to schedule a visa interview at the US Embassy or Consulate in India. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (around ₹33,390) and the DS-160 machine-readable visa fee of $185 (around ₹17,649) before the appointment.

Bring the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, CMU offer letter, financial affidavit showing one year of tuition and living cost, and academic transcripts. F-1 visas can be issued up to 365 days before the program start date, but you may enter the US only 30 days before orientation.

2026 update: Book your OFC biometrics and consular interview slots as soon as your I-20 arrives, since Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad consulates run tight availability windows through the summer.

Tips for Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Carnegie Mellon and the university’s published guidance.

  • Apply to the CMU college that fits your profile, not the most prestigious one.
  • Use Early Decision only if funding the full $93,614 (around ₹89.31 Lakhs) is realistic.
  • For MSCS, take strong theory courses (algorithms, systems, math) at your Indian Bachelor’s.
  • Do the optional InitialView or Vericant interview to demonstrate English fluency.
  • Send your English test score in the first application week to avoid ETS delivery delays.
  • For Tepper, target Round 2 (early January 2027) to leave time for a scholarship reapply.
  • For PhD, contact 3 to 5 CMU faculty by email in September, well before the December deadlines.

I primarily chose this college for its brand value and the successful placements of alumni. However, the program was more focused on data and software development rather than product management, which was a drawback.

I had a great experience at Carnegie Mellon University. It was a fun, engaging, and fruitful time. The environment at the university was pretty warm with some chills of winter in Pittsburgh. Learning about different cultures and meeting new people was cherry on top.

Scholarship

I received the departmental scholarship worth $21,800. I did not submit any document to be considered for the scholarship. The candidates are chosen based on their application profile.
