Carnegie Mellon University PhD Programs and Funding
PhD programs at CMU are among the most selective in the world, with cohort sizes in single digits to low twenties per department. Admission is faculty-driven, and financial support is a defining feature.
Carnegie Mellon University PhD Application Process
Doctoral admission runs through each department’s own portal, not a central grad school. Typical steps for Fall 2027 entry:
- Shortlist advisors: identify two to three faculty whose research aligns with yours before you apply.
- Portal opens: most SCS PhD portals open on 9 September 2026 with the same 9 December 2026 deadline as MSCS.
- Materials: statement of purpose, three academic recommendations, transcripts, research writing samples, GRE (where required by department).
- English proficiency: same institutional floors as master’s, and SCS does not waive for F-1 or J-1 applicants.
- Interview: department-specific, usually after shortlisting.
Carnegie Mellon University PhD Funding and Stipend
Admitted PhD students typically receive full tuition remission, subsidised health insurance, and a monthly stipend delivered through research or teaching assistantships. Stipend amounts vary by school and are set for each academic year — confirm current 2026 to 2027 numbers directly with the target department and cross-check the funding options for Indian students.
Carnegie Mellon University Application Process
The workflow depends on your level. Undergraduates apply through one central platform, while master’s and PhD applicants file directly with each school. Both routes ask for transcripts, English scores, and essays uploaded before the deadline.
- Pick your platform. Undergraduates use the Common Application, which opened 31 July 2026 for the Fall 2027 cycle. Master’s applicants open the target school’s portal — SCS on 9 September 2026, Tepper year-round, Heinz rolling.
- Register and start early. Create your account, add CMU to your college list, and begin the essays and short answers well before the deadline.
- Upload transcripts. Unofficial Class XII marksheets (UG) or Bachelor’s transcripts with a WES or CMU-accepted evaluation (PG) at application stage; official copies come later.
- Submit English and standardised scores. Send IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo; add SAT or ACT for UG, and GRE or GMAT for master’s or MBA where required.
- Add essays, video, and recommendations. UG uses the Common App essay plus a three-part CMU writing supplement; SCS master’s ask for a 1 to 2 page SOP and three letters; Tepper adds a video essay.
- Pay the application fee. USD 75 (INR 7,152) for UG via the Common Application, USD 80 to USD 100 (INR 7,629 to INR 9,536) for SCS master’s, USD 200 (INR 19,072) for the Tepper MBA, and no application fee at Heinz College.
- Track your portal. Watch each portal for interview invites (Tepper, some PhD programs) and decision notifications.
Carnegie Mellon University Admission Decisions Timeline
Undergraduate Early Decision applicants hear by 15 December 2026 and must confirm enrolment by 1 February 2027. Regular Decision candidates receive notifications no later than 1 April 2027, with a deposit due by 1 May 2027. Tepper Round 1 sends decisions on 9 December 2026, and MSCS Final decisions typically arrive between February and March 2027. Deferrals are handled on a case-by-case basis and are more common for military service or serious health reasons than for personal preference.
Carnegie Mellon University Documents Required
Have every document scanned, named clearly, and ready before you open the portal. Missing paperwork is the top reason Indian applications sit incomplete past the deadline.
- Passport bio page valid at least six months past the intended entry date.
- Class XII marksheet and passing certificate (UG applicants), or all-semester Bachelor’s transcripts (PG applicants).
- Class X marksheet for undergraduate applicants.
- Bachelor’s degree certificate or provisional certificate for master’s and PhD applicants.
- Official IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo score report sent electronically to CMU.
- SAT or ACT score report for UG; GRE or GMAT report for master’s or MBA where the program requires it.
- Statement of Purpose (SOP) for master’s and PhD applicants, 1 to 2 pages, program-specific.
- Common Application essay and CMU writing supplement (three short-answer questions) for UG.
- Letters of Recommendation: one teacher plus one counsellor evaluation for UG; three LORs for master’s and PhD (at least two academic).
- Resume or CV for master’s, PhD, and MBA applicants.
- Portfolio or audition materials for Design, Architecture, Drama, Music, and Art programs.
- Financial documentation (bank statements, sponsor letters) once admitted, for the I-20 form used in the F-1 visa.
Carnegie Mellon University Acceptance Rate
Carnegie Mellon publishes an overall first-year undergraduate acceptance rate of around 11 percent, placing it among the ten most selective private research universities in the United States. Graduate selectivity varies sharply by department, with the School of Computer Science admitting well under 10 percent of applicants in some tracks. See the CMU ranking band for context on where CMU sits globally.
Carnegie Mellon University Undergraduate Acceptance Rate
The 11 percent overall figure masks tighter admit rates for high-demand undergraduate colleges: the School of Computer Science and the College of Engineering typically run in low single digits for international applicants, while some Humanities and Social Sciences majors admit closer to the low double digits. Admitted Indian undergraduates commonly post Class XII scores of 95 percent or higher for STEM tracks, with strong SAT or ACT scores and evidence of research, coding, or research-style projects.
Carnegie Mellon University Graduate Program Selectivity
Graduate admit rates are set by each department. MS Computer Science, MS Machine Learning, and MSAII (Artificial Intelligence and Innovation) attract thousands of applicants per year for cohorts in the tens to low hundreds. MISM at Heinz and the Tepper MBA are more accessible relative to SCS but remain highly competitive by any national benchmark.
Insider note: Indian applicants to SCS master’s who list a specific research fit and cite two to three faculty by name in their SOP see meaningfully better shortlist rates than those who submit generic essays.
US Student Visa Process for Carnegie Mellon University
Indian students admitted to a full-time on-campus program at CMU are eligible for the F-1 student visa, issued by a US consulate in India. The Tepper Online Hybrid MBA does not qualify for the F-1 route. Steps to secure the visa in time for Fall 2027 orientation:
- Accept the CMU offer, pay the enrolment deposit, and receive the Form I-20 from CMU’s Office of International Education.
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,376) on the official ICE portal.
- Complete the DS-160 non-immigrant visa form online and pay the visa application fee of USD 185 (INR 17,642).
- Schedule biometrics at a VAC (Visa Application Centre) and a visa interview at one of the five US consulates in India (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad).
- Carry your I-20, passport, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, CMU offer letter, financial proof (roughly USD 95,000 for one UG year, less for shorter master’s), and academic documents to the interview.
- On arrival in Pittsburgh, register with CMU’s Office of International Education within the first two weeks and attend the mandatory international-student orientation.
Planning note: Interview wait times at Indian consulates for F-1 visas peaked at over 90 days during recent Summer surges, so book your slot the same week you receive the I-20 — ideally by April 2027 for a July or August travel plan.
Tips and Checklist for Carnegie Mellon University Admissions
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at CMU and its published admissions guidance. Use them alongside your program’s official page, not in place of it.
- Anchor your SOP to two faculty: SCS and Robotics reviewers weight demonstrated research fit heavily, and generic essays underperform even from strong academic profiles.
- Submit test scores even where optional: a strong SAT (1500+) or GRE Quant (168+) noticeably lifts your file at CMU when scores are on the higher end.
- Book IELTS or TOEFL by August 2026 if you plan to apply for MSCS Early on 18 November 2026 — score-reporting turnarounds add 10 to 15 days.
- Request Class X, XII, and Bachelor’s transcripts 8 weeks before your first deadline; Indian boards and universities move slowly during the Diwali and Christmas windows.
- Line up recommenders by early September 2026 so they have at least 6 weeks to write for a November deadline.
- Complete the CMU writing supplement in draft before the Common App essay — the three CMU-specific answers signal fit and are the first thing readers reach after your grades.
- Budget for the full cost of attendance: USD 93,614 (INR 89.27 Lakhs) for UG residents in 2026 to 2027, since CMU does not offer need-based financial aid to international undergraduates.
- Plan the F-1 visa around April to May 2027 to leave buffer for administrative processing at the Indian consulate.
- Do not defer without written cause: deferrals at CMU are approved sparingly and mostly for medical or service reasons.
Carnegie Mellon University admissions reward Indian applicants who file early, back their choice with faculty-specific research fit, and clear the English-proficiency thresholds well ahead of deadlines. Track each portal separately, since UG, SCS, Tepper, and Heinz all run on independent calendars. Once admitted, move on the F-1 visa fast — an early I-20 is your single biggest lever against a delayed August start.

- Not a very suitable fit for Product Management.
- Tuition fees are quite high for the value provided.
- Large batch sizes may be a concern.
Overview
I primarily chose this college for its brand value and the successful placements of alumni. However, the program was more focused on data and software development rather than product management, which was a drawback.

- I liked faculties and their way of teaching
- Infrastructure of the campus is great and mind blowing
- University provides great exposure and help in all round development
Dislikes
- Fees of the university is very expensive
- Academic is rigorous and cost of living is high
Overview
The admission process included marks of GRE and IELTS i.e I got 323 marks in GRE and 8 bands in IELTS. Other things included were Academics of bachelor, SOP, LOR of faculties and other financial documents. I prepared for exams from online platform i.e. GregMat and didn't go for any consultancy for admission.

- The world-class environment and the ample amount of opportunities were my major factors to choose CMU, followed by the profiles of the professors and the talk with the current cohort.
- The holistic take on grooming the students, providing a realistic view and making them job market ready are some points I like about the university. The career development centre is a little helpful but the research is completely a responsibility of the student.
Dislikes
- As an international student you might end feeling lonely at some states, however one needs to trust the process. I personally prefer keeping away from departmental politics. Initially, it did distract me however, it's important to bear in mind that it's a common occurrence and you shouldn't take it personally.
Overview
I had a great experience at Carnegie Mellon University. It was a fun, engaging, and fruitful time. The environment at the university was pretty warm with some chills of winter in Pittsburgh. Learning about different cultures and meeting new people was cherry on top.
Scholarship
I received the departmental scholarship worth $21,800. I did not submit any document to be considered for the scholarship. The candidates are chosen based on their application profile.

- CMU is the number 1 college in systems and security courses that I wanted to do.
- The rigorousness of CMU is what really makes it valuable. I have worked for 2.5 years before coming here and a semester of work here is worth more learning than my entire career. That being said, it is very hectic and can be very hard for a lot of students.
Dislikes
- The bonding between students across departments can be improved. Intra department is good but inter department can be made better. There are events that happen every now and then that try to make this happen however it can be hard for everyone to sync up since every department has a very different course set for its students that leads to wildly different schedules for students.
Overview
The overall experience here has been very amazing for me. I have engaged in a lot of activities and strived to be better all the time. This is very valuable to me and I hope it is the same for anyone else who joins as well.
Scholarship
Yes. Most students in my department get a varied amount of funding based on their scores.

- The reputation of Carnegie Mellon University within CS and Analytics is top notch, and the program course really aligned with what I was looking for.
Overview
My overall experience has been good so far. Faculty is great, career coaches are really helpful. Our program director is a great man. The only thing that I find difficult is that the program length is only 9 months which makes the program pretty intense.
