San Francisco State University admissions run through the Cal State Apply portal for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants, with a Class XII floor of 2.5 GPA (roughly 65 percent) for UG and a US Bachelor’s equivalent at 3.0 GPA (around 65 to 70 percent) for PG.

  • Fall 2027 primary intake: undergraduate international deadline is 1 May 2027 on Cal State Apply.
  • Base tuition for international UG is around USD 18,142 per year (₹17.30 Lakhs) and PG around USD 19,852 per year (₹18.93 Lakhs), plus a one-time application fee of USD 70 (₹6,674) per campus.
  • UG eligibility: Class XII with 2.5 GPA and IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 61; PG eligibility: Bachelor’s at B average and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80.
  • SFSU is an access-oriented CSU campus with an estimated acceptance rate near 90 percent, based on public CSU admissions patterns.

Popular graduate picks from Indian students at San Francisco State University include the MS in Computer Science, MS in Business Analytics, and the Lam Family MBA, alongside a broad UG lineup in engineering, business and design covered in the San Francisco State University overview. Applicants generally describe the process as paperwork heavy but predictable, with Cal State Apply status updates arriving on a fairly steady cadence.

San Francisco State University Application Deadlines

SFSU runs two intakes each year, and the Fall intake is the primary window where most graduate and undergraduate programs open to Indian applicants. All applications route through Cal State Apply, the CSU system’s centralised platform, per the SFSU Future Students dates and deadlines page and the Division of Graduate Studies admissions calendar.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = ₹95.34, the live rate on 13 August 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

San Francisco State University’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August start) — most programs open here.

Graduate programs at SFSU set their own department deadlines inside the Fall filing window. Popular computing and business master’s programs typically close between February and April for the following Fall, so build your Cal State Apply timeline around your target department’s dated cut-off, not just the system-open date.

Planning note: Cal State Apply’s Fall 2027 open date of 1 October 2026 is published on the platform’s own help centre, so it is a firm cycle anchor for both UG and PG applicants targeting an August 2027 arrival.

San Francisco State University Eligibility and English Scores for Indian Students

SFSU applies CSU-wide academic floors and adds English proficiency requirements for applicants whose prior schooling was not in an English-medium country. The rules below come from the Future Students international freshmen page and the Division of Graduate Studies English test requirements page.

San Francisco State University UG and PG Academic Floors

  • UG general entry: Class XII with roughly 65 to 70 percent (a US 2.5 GPA on the 4.0 scale) for non-California applicants.
  • UG subject rule: A-G equivalent coursework including English through Class XII and Mathematics through Class XII.
  • PG general entry: Four-year Bachelor’s degree, US-equivalent, with roughly 65 to 70 percent (a US 3.0 GPA / B average) in the last two years.
  • Three-year Indian Bachelor’s: Reviewed case by case; most departments prefer a four-year degree or a completed Master’s for parity with a US Bachelor’s.

San Francisco State University English Proficiency Minimums

TestUG minimumPG minimum
IELTS Academic6.0 overall6.5 overall
TOEFL iBT6180
PTE Academic4559
Duolingo English Test95110 (some programs decline)

San Francisco State University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

SFSU waives the English test only for applicants who have completed three or more years of full-time academic study at an institution in a listed English-speaking country (Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK, US and a few others). India is not on the exempt list, so Indian Class XII or Bachelor’s graduates almost always submit an IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo score even if their school was English medium.

San Francisco State University PG Programs and Requirements

SFSU offers over 100 master’s programs, and the department pages set the academic and English floors above the CSU-wide baseline. Base tuition for full-time international graduate students works out to around USD 19,852 per year (₹18.93 Lakhs) before campus fees; a course-wise breakdown lives on the SFSU tuition by course page. The Lam Family MBA appears in the table below rather than a standalone section, as intake and English floors mirror the wider PG pool.

Insider note: For quant-heavy PG programs like MS Business Analytics and MS Statistical Data Science, most Indian applicants strengthen their file with clear evidence of programming and statistics coursework, since departments look at course-level rigour rather than only overall GPA.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official San Francisco State University graduate application page for your chosen program before applying.

San Francisco State University UG Programs and Entry Requirements

Undergraduate international applicants must have completed Class XII with the equivalent of a US 2.5 GPA (roughly 65 to 70 percent) and meet the campus English floor. Base tuition for full-time international UG students works out to around USD 18,142 per year (₹17.30 Lakhs) before campus fees.

Indian Class XII applicants translate to CSU’s 2.5 GPA floor at roughly 65 to 70 percent, though impacted majors (nursing, some engineering pathways) practically need higher marks. The A-G subject expectation, in Indian terms, means English studied through Class XII, Mathematics through Class XII, and a science lab subject on your transcript.

San Francisco State University Application Process

Every undergraduate and graduate application to SFSU is filed on Cal State Apply, the centralised CSU platform run by Liaison International. The steps below track the standard route for Indian applicants targeting the Fall 2027 primary intake.

  1. Create a Cal State Apply account for the correct term. The Cal State Apply portal opens for Fall 2027 submission on 1 October 2026, per the platform’s own published cycle dates.
  2. Pay the application fee of USD 70 (₹6,674) per campus on Cal State Apply. Payment is by credit card or PayPal; the fee is non-refundable.
  3. Add SFSU as one of your target campuses and pick the specific program (major or master’s). CSU allows multi-campus applications on one profile.
  4. Upload unofficial transcripts, complete the coursework entry section, and enter your English test scores (IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE, or Duolingo).
  5. Submit before the applicable UG or PG deadline. Once submitted, you cannot edit responses, though you can update test scores through the applicant portal.
  6. Send official transcripts and English test scores to SFSU once you receive an admission decision, before matriculation.

Before you apply: If you plan to apply to more than one CSU campus, budget for the per-campus fee. Applying to three CSUs, for instance, costs USD 210 (around ₹20,021).

San Francisco State University Admission Decisions and Deposit

SFSU releases admission decisions on a rolling basis after the application closes. Undergraduate international applicants typically hear back between January and April for Fall admission, and graduate decisions arrive on department-specific schedules.

  • Offer letter: Delivered digitally through the Cal State Apply and SFSU student portal.
  • Enrollment deposit deadline: 1 May 2027 for Fall 2027 undergraduate admits.
  • Conditional offers: Rare; SFSU does not offer conditional graduate admission for applicants who fall short of the English floor.
  • Deferral policy: Requests are reviewed by the department; deferrals are generally granted only for documented reasons like visa delays.

After accepting the offer and paying the enrollment deposit, you submit the Financial Affidavit and supporting bank documents to trigger I-20 issuance, which you need to book the F-1 visa interview.

Documents Required for San Francisco State University

The document list below is paperwork only, sent to SFSU either through Cal State Apply during the application phase or directly to the Division of Graduate Studies after admission, per the SFSU required academic documents page.

  • Passport: Bio-data page scan; valid at least six months past intended entry to the US.
  • Class XII marksheet and certificate: Official English copies, certified where the original is in another language.
  • Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (PG applicants): Sealed, university-issued, in English.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): Programme-specific; typically 500 to 1,000 words.
  • Letters of Recommendation (LORs): Two to three, submitted via Cal State Apply’s recommender request tool.
  • Resume or CV: Especially for MBA, MS Business Analytics, and any program that recommends work exposure.
  • English test score report: IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, or Duolingo, sent electronically to SFSU.
  • Financial Affidavit and bank statements: Required for I-20 issuance, not for the initial application review.
  • Course-by-course credential evaluation (some PG departments): WES, ECE or similar for Indian Bachelor’s transcripts.

Note: Unofficial documents work for the Cal State Apply application review, but you must submit sealed official records once admitted, before enrolment.

San Francisco State University Acceptance Rate

SFSU is an access-oriented CSU campus. The San Francisco State University ranking band and campus data suggest an overall acceptance rate estimated at around 90 percent, based on competitive-intake CSU admissions patterns; SFSU does not publish an official year-on-year institutional acceptance figure.

What the San Francisco State University 90 Percent Figure Means

The high headline rate reflects CSU’s broad-access mandate, not a guarantee of admission to every major. Impacted majors (Nursing, some Business tracks, select Engineering programs) have significantly tighter cut-offs, and international applicants must still clear the CSU baseline and departmental English floors.

San Francisco State University Selectivity by Program Type

Graduate departments run their own reviews and behave more like selective master’s programs, especially for MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics, where cohorts are small and quant background matters. Undergraduate general-major admission stays broad.

Insider note: Treat the 90 percent figure as a floor for the general applicant pool, not a green light for your specific department. Check the impacted-major list on the SFSU Future Students page before assuming your program is open.

USA Student Visa Process for San Francisco State University Applicants

Admitted SFSU applicants apply for the F-1 student visa at a US consulate in India (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad) after receiving the I-20 from SFSU’s international office. The typical sequence is: pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (₹33,369), complete the DS-160 online form, pay the visa fee of USD 185 (₹17,638), book a biometrics slot, then attend the visa interview.

You must show proof of funds covering at least the first academic year (tuition plus living costs). The Financial Affidavit that unlocks your I-20 typically requires evidence of around USD 42,000 to USD 45,000 (₹40.04 Lakhs to ₹42.90 Lakhs) in liquid assets or sanctioned education loan. After arrival, you complete SEVIS check-in and immigration onboarding through SFSU’s Office of International Programs.

2026 update: The US embassy in India continues to prioritise F-1 interview slots in the March to July window each year, so book your slot as soon as your I-20 arrives to avoid clustering delays close to the Fall 2027 semester start.

Tips and Checklist for San Francisco State University Admissions

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at San Francisco State University over the last few Fall cycles.

  • Book your IELTS or TOEFL by December 2026 if you are targeting the Fall 2027 primary intake, so scores are ready when departments start reviewing.
  • Order Class XII and Bachelor’s transcripts eight weeks before deadline, since Indian boards and universities can take four to six weeks to issue sealed English copies.
  • Line up your two LORs by early January 2027; Cal State Apply sends recommender requests by email, and busy referees need reminder time.
  • Tailor your SOP per department, referencing SFSU faculty research and named electives, not a generic USA study aspiration.
  • Budget for multi-campus applications: at USD 70 (₹6,674) per campus on Cal State Apply, three CSUs costs around ₹20,000 in fees alone.
  • Complete the Financial Affidavit right after your offer; delayed bank documents are the single most common cause of I-20 slippage into July.
  • Cross-check impacted-major status before submitting; some SFSU majors close earlier than the campus-wide deadline.
  • Get a WES or ECE credential evaluation if your target PG department requires it, especially for a three-year Bachelor’s applicant.

Applying to SFSU is a fairly linear Cal State Apply exercise, but the four decision points that most often derail Indian applications are English test timing, transcript sourcing, financial documentation, and impacted-major awareness — planning each five to six weeks ahead of deadline turns the timeline from tight to comfortable.

Overview

The college is close to my house and is more affordable than other colleges. I like the campus itself and also the professors that teach here. The fine arts building has a myriad of rooms that students can use to independently work.

Overview

It's in the city of San Francisco and that's what intrigued me to come, so I can explore the city and live the city life. I am from SoCal and I live right next to the beach so moving to San Francisco was a big change for me and it was a change that really helped me grow as a person.

I have not gotten any scholarships or financial aid. When I applied for financial aid, I didn't qualify to get any.

Overview

I loved the location, and it was one of the only Cal State schools with a relatively good nursing program. I also loved the range of classes, as I am a human sexuality minor. The classes they offer for that minor are amazing.
