Santa Clara University Eligibility for Indian Students
Santa Clara University weighs academic record, English proficiency, and program-specific prerequisites. Indian applicants clear a threshold on all three before the application is read in full. Note: Program-specific entry requirements and interview timing may differ. Always confirm on the Leavey School of Business admissions page before applying.
Santa Clara University PhD Admission Route
Santa Clara University offers PhD programs primarily through the School of Engineering, including doctoral work in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. All PhD tracks are Fall-intake only and require the GRE.
SCU PhD Requirements for Indian Applicants
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in the relevant engineering discipline with a strong academic record (typically Bachelor’s at 70 percent or above; a Master’s strengthens the application).
- GRE mandatory, with programs targeting scores around 300 or higher; institution code 4851.
- Research statement, two to three letters of recommendation, and identification of a potential faculty advisor before applying is strongly encouraged.
- English: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80, waived under the four-year English-medium schooling rule.
Planning note: PhD funding at SCU is program-specific. Confirm assistantship or research funding availability with your prospective advisor before submitting — the offer letter and funding decision are separate at SCU.
Santa Clara University Application Process
Santa Clara University routes undergraduate first-year applications through the Common App and graduate applications through school-specific portals. The steps below apply to Indian applicants for the Fall 2027 cycle.
- Start on the Common App (UG only). The 2026-27 Common App opened on 1 August 2026 and closes for SCU per the deadlines table above.
- Pay the application fee of USD 75 (around INR 7,146) for UG or USD 100 (around INR 9,528) for graduate programs on the SCU or Common App portal.
- Submit official Class X and Class XII transcripts (with English translations if in another language).
- Upload IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo scores directly from the testing service.
- Complete the SCU International Student Financial Resource Statement showing you can cover the first year’s cost of attendance.
- Complete an optional but recommended InitialView or Vericant interview before the interview deadline (23 November 2026 for EA/ED I).
- Submit teacher evaluation, secondary school report, and any program-specific supplements.
Santa Clara University Admission Decisions Timeline
- Early Action decisions: Released in mid-to-late December 2026.
- Early Decision (binding): Applicants accept within a short window of the offer, typically two to three weeks.
- Regular Decision: Notifications in late March 2027; enrollment reply due by 1 May 2027.
- Mid-year reports are due by the end of January for Regular Decision applicants or candidates deferred from Early Action.
Santa Clara University Documents Required
Assemble the paperwork below before you open the Common App or SCU portal. Missing items are the single most common cause of application delay for Indian candidates.
- Valid Indian passport (with at least 6 months of validity beyond intended arrival).
- Official Class X and XII transcripts and certificates from the awarding board.
- Official Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (for graduate applicants); an official WES course-by-course evaluation is required for international transfer UG applicants.
- English proficiency score report sent electronically from IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo.
- Standardised test scores (GRE or GMAT for graduate applicants where required).
- Statement of Purpose or personal essay per program prompt.
- One academic teacher evaluation (UG) or 2 to 3 letters of recommendation (PG).
- Secondary School Report Form (UG).
- Updated CV or resume (PG applicants).
- International Student Financial Resource Form with bank statements or sponsor affidavits.
- Copies of any prior US visas or I-20 forms (for transfer applicants).
Santa Clara University Acceptance Rate
Santa Clara University does not publish a separate institutional international acceptance rate. Widely reported figures place the overall admit rate near 48 percent, with an early-round admit rate around 76 percent. Actual admit likelihood varies sharply by programme and by round.
What SCU Weighs Most in Indian Applications
Class XII performance and English score carry the most weight, followed by essay quality and teacher evaluations. SAT and ACT remain optional; sending strong scores can still help borderline files but skipping them is not a penalty.
Santa Clara University Round-Wise Odds
Early Action and Early Decision I close first and carry the highest admit rates. Regular Decision is the most competitive round because the pool expands significantly. For a fuller view of how SCU stacks up on published lists, see the CSA ranking band.
Insider note: Indian STEM applicants tracking MS CSE or MS Information Systems face the tightest competition. Filing in Round 1 (1 April 2027 for Fall 2027) is meaningfully stronger than Round 2 because seat availability shrinks with each cycle.
USA F-1 Student Visa for Santa Clara University Applicants
Indian students admitted to Santa Clara University enter the US on an F-1 student visa. SCU’s International Students Office issues the Form I-20 once you have accepted the offer, paid the enrollment deposit, and demonstrated adequate financial resources for the first year of study. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,348) before booking a US embassy interview slot.
Book the DS-160 visa appointment through the US-India visa scheduling portal and pay the MRV visa fee of USD 185 (around INR 17,627). At the interview, carry the I-20, financial documents (bank statements, affidavits of support), SCU offer letter, academic transcripts, and English test score reports. F-1 admits should aim to schedule the interview at least 60 to 90 days before the Fall quarter start date.
2026 update: Indian F-1 applicants should monitor US embassy slot availability closely for the June-to-August rush. Post-arrival, register with the SCU International Students and Scholars office within the first two weeks to activate SEVIS check-in.
Tips and Application Checklist for Santa Clara University
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Santa Clara University. Combine them with the deadlines table to build a working timeline.
- Request WES evaluation early: Course-by-course evaluations take 6 to 8 weeks; start immediately if applying as a transfer.
- Book the English test 4 months out: Send IELTS or TOEFL scores to SCU electronically to avoid mailing delays.
- Ask for GMAT/GRE waiver in writing: Leavey MBA applicants with 5+ years of quantitative work often qualify; the request goes to the admissions committee before you register for the exam.
- File Early Action for UG: The 23 November 2026 EA deadline offers a real admit-rate uplift and does not bind you to attend.
- Finalise financial proof by October: The International Student Financial Resource Form needs matching bank statements dated within 6 months.
- Line up recommenders in September: Academic and professional recommenders need at least 6 weeks of notice for a strong letter.
- Schedule the visa interview 90 days ahead: Book the earliest available Mumbai or Delhi slot once your I-20 arrives.
- Confirm program-specific prerequisites: MS CSE and MS Bioengineering expect completed prerequisite coursework before matriculation.
Santa Clara University’s Fall 2027 cycle is now open on the Common App, with the Early Action deadline of 23 November 2026 acting as the practical anchor for undergraduate Indian applicants. Postgraduate candidates should target the Winter 2027 Engineering deadline (1 October 2026) if racing the clock, or plan for the Fall 2027 rounds otherwise. Confirmed English floors, verified deadlines, and Common App verification make this the cleanest cycle to file early.

- Small campus unlike its counterparts, the area of campus is small unlike other universities which spewed over vast acres of land with its own ecosystem, due its location, it is situated in city centre
Scholarship
- There were lot of scholarships awarded at the university I studied at; for example, the vice chancellor's scholarship for 12,000 pounds
- £7000, I received a scholarship.
- Yeah, most of them, but I can't exactly pinpoint the number.
- On average it is £2000-3000, and I can't roughly say the number of students who have received scholarships.

- The beautiful campus especially the library and the mission gardens. The mission gardens was a relaxing place.
- Proximity to big tech companies especially the company where I was interning.
- The location - San Francisco Bay Area, which has a pleasant weather throughout the year, cool breeze and top notch AQI compared to all Indian metro cities.
Dislikes
- Curriculum - Everyone had to take some core courses despite what their background was. For people who had already studied those, there was some repetition and unnecessary expenditure.
- Large intakes - The university had a huge intake for Computer Science and related branches which made most lectures Indian heavy in terms of student composition. So, the opportunity to interact with students of other backgrounds reduced.
- High expenditure - Being in the Bay Area, the university tuition fees and even the housing was quite expensive compared to other universities like Indiana University Bloomington, SUNY Buffalo and University of Florida.
Scholarship
- I did not receive any scholarship for this course and don’t know of people who received one. Although I am sure some of them might have received it. Scholarships are usually provided by professors who also expect that student to work as their assistant and lab technician. But I know for sure that very few people receive scholarships at US universities.

- This college is located in the Silicon Valley which is the best place to be right now given the current job market. There are a lot of companies, startups which located within a few miles of the college.
- The Bay Area weather , is something that feels just like home.
- Can take pretty much any course without much pre requisites which in contrast to other colleges required me to go through a strict pre req courses list.
Dislikes
- The campus size is not that big as compared to other universities (like UC’s ) in California.
- Limited number of on campus jobs.
- No financial support for international students since this is a private university.
Scholarship
- During the time of first enrolment of courses for the fall 2024 quarter, based on my undergrad grades, I was awarded a merit scholarship of $2,000, which was processed during the fee payment of the first quarter.
- Some of my batchmates have received the same merit-based scholarships, but there is no other financial aid given to international students. Around 20%–30% of students receive one-time merit-based scholarships.

- Beautiful campus
- Great opportunities for getting an on-campus job (95% of us eventually get one)
- Private university which means having a good teacher to student ratio
Dislikes
- The tuition can be quite expensive as compared to public universities
- Financial aid isn't usually provided by the department (school of engineering)
- The quarter system leads to having only 11 weeks for a course which can be less
Scholarship
- Unfortunately, no scholarships provided by school of engineering (that I have heard of)
- There is a possibility of you receiving a tuition-cover from a professor if you can get a research assistant position but it can be super rare
- I have received financial aid from my professor (which is different from a scholarship provided by the university)

- The campus of this university is too pretty yet very big, from cafe to libraries every class is air conditioned so that's the plus point.
- The college provides groceries and essential toiletries which really helps the student.
- Every person including the faculty members and students are really helpful.
Dislikes
- Can't really find anything which I didn't like but its too expensive for a private university.
Overview
I opted this university because of the area it was situated in. Bay area is known for its technology industry so it was easier for me to settle down here. The admission process was purely online. Once you meet the requirements provided by the university which is IELTS and your score in bachelors degree, then you are set to get into the university.

Overall I would say it’s a win win situation as my university is very well recognised here in the Silicon Valley & the alumni’s help a lot! The location is pretty good with almost similar weather conditions as in India, it is a bit exorbitant in terms of location but other than that everything seems to be fine.

- I had personal reasons that made me choose this school, I wanted to stay in Silicon Valley, for a private school, SCU fees is affordable for a foreign student, they had good placement history.
Overview
My overall experience is good so far, there’s a good learning curve- both personally and professionally, when you are in a foreign country with limited resources at your disposal. This makes us creative, hard-working and pro-active. The approach to education in USA is different than what I experienced in India, in the way that it’s more practical, can be tailored to your interest and fun indeed.
Scholarship
I hadn’t applied for scholarships but I was given one anyway, the scholarship didn’t have a name and amounted to $4000 for 2 years.

- The main factor for me to choose Santa Clara University was the location. Because it is bay area I thought it will help me with the placement and it surely did help a little but did not play a major role as I expected. But the weather conditions in Bay area makes it bearable.
Overview
Overall experience at the university was great. I learned a lot and the faculty and staff was also very helpful. The university has the best infrastructure compare to other universities. There are many clubs and events to support students coming in every quarter.
Scholarship
I haven't receive any scholarship but once you enroll in the university you can enroll in Teaching Assistance program which then pays for your tuitions.
