- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) or 4.5 (1-6 scale), IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 53, Duolingo 110 or TOEFL Essentials 8.5.
- Credential verification: NACES member evaluation such as WES or ECE, typically course-by-course for applicable Indian transcripts.
- Test scores: GRE or GMAT is programme-specific; the Muma MBA and several M.S programmes offer waivers based on undergraduate GPA and work experience.
Undergraduate Requirements at USF for Indian Applicants
- Class 12 record: Competitive admits from India post 75% to 85% in CBSE, ISC or a State Board Class 12 with strong core academic subjects.
- Standardised tests: SAT mid-range 1290 to 1420 or ACT mid-range 28 to 32 is required.
- English proficiency: USF does not accept TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo for freshmen. SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing of 490 or ACT English 17 with Reading 19 fulfils the language rule.
Note: Indian applicants from three-year bachelor’s programmes such as B.Com or B.A remain eligible for USF master’s review. USF accepts NACES equivalency to a US bachelor’s degree where the evaluation confirms comparability.
University of South Florida Acceptance Rate 2027
The USF acceptance rate is 43% (estimated), placing USF in the moderately selective band among US public research universities. USF does not publish a separate admit rate for international or Indian applicants. The figure reflects the overall first-year cohort.
Reality check: Indian master’s applicants with a bachelor’s record above 75% and clean IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 face effectively higher admit odds than the overall 43%. The pool self-selects and STEM programmes prioritise research fit over blanket cutoffs.

USF is also ranked #89 among National Universities by US News 2025 and #45 among US public universities. The College of Marine Science operates as one of the top ten US marine science programmes.
Key insight: USF’s US News Global #362 rank places it well inside the visa-friendly band employers use for OPT and H-1B lottery decisions. Indian graduates should not read the QS drift as a job-market signal.

University of South Florida Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
USF publishes broad graduate outcome data through Muma College of Business and its Career Services office rather than a single centralised placement rate. Indian master’s graduates cluster in Florida’s technology, healthcare and finance corridors.
- Median starting salary: USD 55,000 to USD 65,000 (INR 52.15 to 61.63 lakh) across USF graduates; market median context, not officially disclosed cohort figure.
- Sector concentration: Healthcare and nursing graduates cluster at USD 61,674; International Business bachelor’s at USD 38,593; engineering and computer science graduates lead the salary distribution.
- OPT eligibility: Designated STEM master’s programmes carry up to 36 months of OPT extension for Indian F-1 graduates.
- Employer catchment: Tampa Bay technology, finance, marine science and healthcare employers dominate the USF alumni network; specific recruiter lists are not officially disclosed at university level.
- Career support: Central USF Career Services provides visa-aware coaching, on-campus recruiting events and job fairs tailored to F-1 candidates through Handshake.
Insider note: Indian master’s graduates from USF’s engineering and IT programmes typically convert OPT to H-1B through Florida-based employers within 12 to 18 months. The Tampa Bay tech corridor gives geographic continuity that avoids a costly relocation after the master’s.
University of South Florida vs Peer Universities
Comparable Florida and cross-country public research universities help Indian applicants benchmark USF on selectivity, cost and rank. The peers below all admit Indian students on a similar profile.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg PG Fee (USD/year) | Avg PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of South Florida | #761-770 | USD 12,375 to 19,443 | INR 11.73 to 18.44 lakh | Waterfront St. Petersburg campus with top-10 Marine Science |
| Florida State University | NA | NA | NA | Broader research portfolio; Tallahassee state capital location |
| University of Central Florida | NA | NA | NA | Larger STEM cohort in Orlando tech and simulation cluster |
| Florida International University | NA | NA | NA | Miami-based international business specialisation |
USF offers the lowest published non-resident master’s tuition among Florida public research peers and pairs it with the only top-ten Marine Science programme in the group. Indian applicants prioritising cost efficiency and STEM OPT will find USF’s blended value hard to beat in Florida.
The University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus fits Indian master’s applicants who want a US STEM degree at a total investment near INR 30 to 37 lakh. It offers live-load access to Tampa Bay technology and healthcare recruiters plus a smaller waterfront setting. Median starting salaries of USD 55,000 to USD 65,000 recover the two-year investment inside three to four working years for STEM OPT holders. The F-1 to STEM extension route strengthens post-study study in USA outcomes.
USF is not the right fit for Indian applicants targeting top-100 QS brand prestige or Ivy-tier research funding. The QS trajectory has slipped and USF operates as a distributed three-campus institution. Applicants prioritising QS brand should shortlist universities in USA like University of Florida (Gainesville) as a realistic alternative.
University of South Florida FAQs
Ques. Which English-taught graduate programmes at USF do Indian students choose most often?
Ans. Indian graduate enrolment at the University of South Florida clusters into the Muma M.B.A, M.S Computer Engineering, M.S Information Technology, M.S Industrial Engineering and M.P.H programmes. These attract Indian candidates because they combine designated STEM OPT eligibility of up to 36 months with mid-tier non-resident tuition of USD 12,375 to USD 19,443 per year. The total cost recovers inside three to four working years at Florida median tech salaries.
Ques. How many hours can USF Indian students work part-time on an F-1 visa?
Ans. F-1 students at USF may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during Fall and Spring semesters and up to 40 hours per week during Summer and official breaks. On-campus jobs include research assistantships, library posts and Kate Tiedemann School support roles. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation tied to a course requirement or Optional Practical Training issued after graduation.
Ques. Does the University of South Florida waive the GRE for Indian master’s applicants?
Ans. USF operates programme-specific GRE and GMAT policies rather than a university-wide waiver. The Muma College of Business M.B.A grants GMAT waivers based on undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or above plus two years of full-time work experience. Several M.S engineering programmes waive the GRE for applicants holding a first-class Indian bachelor’s degree; the M.S Marine Science programme retains GRE strongly recommended status.
Ques. What is USF’s international application fee and can Indian students get it waived?
Ans. The University of South Florida charges an international graduate application fee of USD 30 and an international undergraduate application fee of USD 30. Indian applicants receive fee waivers only through official partners such as EducationUSA advising centres, McNair scholar programmes and select USF recruitment events in India. Standard commercial application platforms do not trigger waivers, so Indian students should apply through EducationUSA where possible for the fee waiver.
Ques. Which Indian education loan providers finance USF programmes?
Ans. USF is on the approved international university list for major Indian education lenders. These include HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial Services, InCred, Auxilo and public-sector lenders like SBI. Loans typically cover the USF I-20 amount of USD 32,000 to USD 40,000 per year. Non-collateral loans up to INR 40 lakh are available from private lenders subject to co-applicant income and credit score.
Ques. How long does OPT last for USF STEM master’s graduates?
Ans. STEM-designated master’s graduates from USF, including M.S Computer Engineering, M.S Civil Engineering, M.S Industrial Engineering, M.S Information Technology and several M.S sciences, qualify for the standard 12-month OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension. This totals 36 months of post-completion work authorisation. Non-STEM master’s such as the standard M.B.A or M.A programmes carry the base 12-month OPT only.
Ques. Do Indian applicants need WES or NACES credential verification for USF?
Ans. The University of South Florida requires NACES member evaluation for all Indian applicants, most commonly WES or ECE course-by-course reports. Three-year Indian bachelor’s holders in B.Com, B.A or B.Sc need the evaluation to confirm US bachelor equivalency. NACES processing takes four to eight weeks. Applicants should initiate the evaluation eight to ten weeks before their USF deadline.
Ques. What conditional English pathway does USF offer for Indian applicants?
Ans. USF operates the INTO USF pathway for Indian applicants who fall short of direct-entry English scores. INTO USF offers Academic English, undergraduate pathway and graduate pathway programmes at TOEFL iBT 60 or IELTS 5.5 entry, delivered on the Tampa campus. Successful pathway completion routes students into full USF degrees without a separate readmission cycle for Indian students.

Overview
My area of research has a frontier researcher in USF, Dr. Elhamdadi who is a big name in the field of Quandle Theory. I chose the university also for its research output which is pretty high in the department of mathematics.
Campus Life
Campus life in usf is pretty good. The environment is perfect to study. It is a non-party school so it is good for all academic expossure. Along with that, career prospects in usf are good, they have frequent job fairs and workshops on the same. USF is highly diverse in culture so you name a festival and USF celebrates it with enthusiasm. Wifi is average but still does what it needs to do.
