All applicants must submit a video interview via Kira Talent within 1 to 3 days after the deadline, and shortlisted candidates receive a virtual Zoom interview within 3 to 5 weeks.

2026 update: Foster now formalises the Test Optional pathway, but international applicants are strongly encouraged to submit GMAT or GRE scores because the pool is competitive and scholarships often reference test performance.

Foster does not set a formal work experience minimum, though admitted students typically bring 3 to 5 years of full-time professional experience. Scholarship consideration favours Round 1 candidates. Detailed funding is on the Foster scholarships page.

University of Washington, Seattle PhD Admissions

UW offers doctoral programs in engineering, computer science, life sciences, public health, humanities, and social sciences. Applications close between November 2026 and January 2027 for Autumn 2027 entry, with dates set by each department.

University of Washington, Seattle PhD Application Structure

  1. Identify 2 to 3 faculty aligned with your research interest.
  2. Submit statement of purpose, research statement, CV, transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation.
  3. Pay the USD 90 (INR 8,594) application fee and English test score.
  4. Attend an interview if shortlisted, typically over Zoom.

University of Washington, Seattle PhD Funding and Timeline

Most funded doctoral offers include a Research or Teaching Assistantship covering full tuition plus a monthly stipend (verify the current-year rate on your department page), with priority notification going out in February to March 2027. Enrolment confirmation typically closes by 15 April 2027 per US Council of Graduate Schools norms.

Insider note: Reaching out to faculty via email 2 to 3 months before the December deadline materially improves shortlisting odds at UW’s STEM PhDs; a well-scoped research pitch beats a generic cold email.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Washington graduate program page before applying.

University of Washington, Seattle Application Process

The University of Washington uses separate portals for freshman, transfer, and graduate applications. The steps below apply to Autumn 2027 entry.

  1. Choose the correct application: UW Application for freshmen and transfers, and apply.grad.uw.edu for graduate and PhD programs.
  2. Create an account and complete the personal, academic, and activities sections.
  3. Upload documents: transcripts, statement of purpose, CV, and recommendation letters where applicable.
  4. Send English test scores directly from the testing agency to UW by 15 February.
  5. Pay the application fee of USD 95 (INR 9,069) for UG or USD 90 (INR 8,594) for graduate on the official UW application portal.
  6. Submit and track status through your application account.

Before you apply: Fee waivers are not available for international applicants, so the fee is non-refundable and must be repaid if you re-apply in a later cycle.

University of Washington, Seattle Admission Decisions

Freshman decisions for Autumn 2027 release between 1 and 15 March 2027, with the enrolment confirmation deadline on 1 May 2027 (National College Decision Day). Transfer and postbaccalaureate decisions release from 1 May to 30 June 2027.

  • Offer types: unconditional, conditional (pending final transcripts or English scores), or waitlist.
  • Deferral policy: UG offers can request a one-quarter deferral for exceptional circumstances only.
  • Waitlist: UW does not publish waitlist statistics; movement typically happens after 1 May.
  • Graduate offers are made by individual departments, and timelines vary from December 2026 through March 2027.

University of Washington, Seattle Documents Required

Documents must be uploaded during the application; official copies are requested only after admission is confirmed.

  • Valid Indian passport (bio page).
  • Class X and Class XII mark sheets and certificates (for UG applicants).
  • Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate (for graduate and PhD applicants).
  • Statement of Purpose tailored to the program.
  • Letters of Recommendation: 2 for UG (optional) and 3 for graduate.
  • Resume or CV covering academics, projects, and work experience.
  • Official English test score report sent directly by IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo.
  • Financial documentation: bank statements or affidavit dated within the last six months, liquid funds only.
  • Passport-size photograph per specifications.
  • Program-specific portfolio where required (Architecture, Design, Fine Arts).

University of Washington, Seattle Acceptance Rate

UW does not publish a single headline institutional acceptance rate on its admissions homepage, but its Common Data Set filings and public enrolment reports place the overall figure at 40 to 45%, with the international admit rate estimated closer to 35%. This positions UW among the more competitive public flagship universities, aligned with its ranking band in the global top 100.

Which programs are most competitive for Indian applicants?

The Allen School direct-admit CS, BS Nursing, Foster Business direct admit, MS Data Science, MS Business Analytics, and the Full-Time MBA are the tightest funnels. Admit rates in these are widely believed to sit in single digits or low teens even though UW does not release program-level splits.

How to strengthen your profile

Admitted Indian applicants typically show Class XII or Bachelor’s percentages well above the minimum, plus at least one substantial academic or professional project.

Insider note: UW places a heavy weight on the personal essay for freshmen and the statement of purpose for graduate applicants, so a scattergun academic profile with a sharp, focused essay can beat a stronger GPA with generic writing.

USA Student Visa for University of Washington, Seattle Applicants

Indian students admitted to UW Seattle apply for the F-1 student visa. Once you accept the offer, UW’s International Student Services issues an I-20 form, which you use to pay the SEVIS fee of USD 350 (INR 33,411) and book a US embassy visa interview.

You need proof of funds covering at least the first year of cost of attendance in liquid form (bank balances, education loan sanction letters, or sponsor affidavits), the I-20, valid passport, DS-160 confirmation, and a USD 185 (INR 17,660) visa application fee receipt. Slots at Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad consulates fill fast between April and July, so book as soon as the I-20 arrives.

2026 update: US consular sections in India are running drop-box and interview-waiver slots for renewal cases and short-gap F-1 applicants; new applicants should still plan for a full in-person interview and target a booking window within 3 weeks of I-20 issue.

Overview

I did not have any. I applied to uw not from abroad but from the USA since I live here! Nope. UW didnt require us to have any interviews- we just used the common application to apply to University of Washington and you got responses in March. Its close by- so I can drive to UW and come back and save money on staying on campus. Since I'm on the pre med track. uw is a great school for that and has its own med school I hope to attend! I have heard that a lot of students use this app called Handshake to get jobs and o have heard its useful. I know some family who graduated from uw and got a job at SPACEX Overall its quite an experience! Its difficult but you have to expect it to be that way. Uw is a top school for stem!

Overview

The first thing I thought about when choosing a college was its marching band. In high school, I was a member of a core-style marching band. Every year we would spend weeks before school started at band camp to pour our efforts into a unique performance. We competed with other high schools and had tons of fun. Marching band was the highlight of my high school career, and I knew I had to keep being involved. The UW stood out to me for this reason. On top of its great location and academic prowess, it has one of the most entertaining college bands in the country. I applied for 3 other schools in Washington, but I knew this was my first choice. Luckily, my high school prepared me well for the application process and I was not worried. With a 3.8 GPA and AP test scores, I was sure to be accepted. Getting into the UW was exciting because I knew I would continue to pursue my musical interests as well as my academic ones.

Overview

It is a very highly respected college. My parents always wanted me to go to this college, and it is close to home. People who go to this college are able to obtain employment easily because they tend to be highly educated.

Scholarship

Yes if you would like scholarships they can be granted to you depending on your academic achievements. Another way is to apply for scholarships that are unique to you or your demographic. I have federal student loans that I got by applying for FAFSA, they are low interest and you do not pay until you graduate. I also receive financial aid from sally May.

Overview

Because I got in. Originally, I had planned to transfer to Western Washington University. However, after a campus visit to UW, I was in love (like many) with the campus and decided I at least wanted to apply. After hearing back, I decided I wanted to give it a shot.

Scholarship

Yes. I received a scholarship from the Department of Communications for my journalism experience. I received the scholarship by first applying online, and then found out I was selected as a recipient and was required to attend an award ceremony.
