Popular picks for Indian students include the MBA at the Beacom School of Business, the MS in Artificial Intelligence, and the MS in Computer Science, all carrying US STEM designation and the associated post-study work eligibility. Indian applicants generally describe University of South Dakota as a low-friction admissions route into a Midwest research campus with strong on-campus assistantship options.

Admission Status: Open. The primary Fall intake for 2026 closed on 1 August 2026, so the nearest live window is Spring 2027 — graduate applications close 5 December 2026 and undergraduate applications close 15 December 2026. The Common Application for Fall 2027 opened on 1 August 2026 and first-year applications are being accepted now. The graduate application fee is USD 38 (INR 3,635).

University of South Dakota Application Deadlines

USD runs two international intakes per year — Fall (August start) and Spring (January start). Fall is the primary intake, as most graduate programs and all major cohorts open here; Spring runs on a reduced program list. Since today is past the Fall 2026 window, Indian applicants can either target the live Spring 2027 window or plan ahead for Fall 2027 through the already-open Common Application. Deadlines below are per the official USD international admissions page.

USD’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August) — most graduate programs open here, and Spring is limited to a subset.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 95.66, the live rate on 22 August 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

Planning note: USD accepts undergraduate applications year-round on a rolling basis, but international applicants should submit at least 90 days before class start to allow I-20 processing and F-1 visa scheduling from India.

Indian applicants targeting Spring 2027 should be ready with test scores and financial documents by early November 2026 to leave a comfortable buffer. Fall 2027 remains the stronger option for scholarship consideration and full program access. See the US university deadlines guide for cross-comparison with other public research universities.

University of South Dakota IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

USD waives its English proficiency requirement for degree-holders from 38 specified English-speaking countries (undergraduate list) and 35+ nations (graduate list). Indian applicants whose entire prior degree was delivered in English at an accredited institution can request a case-by-case waiver by writing to international@usd.edu with a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter on university letterhead. USD does not publish India on its default waiver list, so the safer path for most Indian applicants is to submit an IELTS or Duolingo score.

USD MBA Admissions and Rounds at University of South Dakota

USD MBA Eligibility and GMAT Policy

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution in any discipline, GPA 2.6+.
  • GMAT/GRE: Waived for applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 3.0+ or three years of relevant work experience.
  • Work experience is not mandatory for the full-time MBA — recent graduates can apply directly.
  • English: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, or Duolingo 110.

University of South Dakota MBA Deadlines and Fees

Applications are rolling for Fall (target 1 August 2027) and Spring (target 5 December 2026). The application fee is USD 38 (INR 3,635). Base MBA tuition follows the international graduate rate of USD 13,441 (INR 12.86 Lakhs) per year, with graduate assistantships available for tuition reduction — see the detailed fee breakdown.

Insider note: Beacom’s MBA does not conduct a mandatory interview for international applicants — decisions are transcript, essay, and reference-letter driven, which shortens the wait to about 4 to 6 weeks post-submission.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of South Dakota page for your chosen program before applying.

University of South Dakota PhD Admissions for Indian Students

USD offers doctoral programs across biology, biomedical sciences, computer science, educational administration, physics, psychology, and clinical health sciences through the Graduate School and Sanford School of Medicine.

USD PhD Application Steps

  1. Identify a faculty advisor whose research aligns with your interests and email them before applying.
  2. Submit the graduate application through the USD Portal or GradCAS with a research statement, CV, and three references.
  3. Provide official transcripts, English test scores, and any program-specific documents (GRE for select programs).

University of South Dakota PhD Funding for Indian Students

USD Graduate School awards 400+ assistantships each year, covering a tuition waiver plus a monthly stipend — the standard package for Indian doctoral admits. Stipends vary by department; STEM programs generally offer USD 18,000 to 22,000 (INR 17.22 to 21.05 Lakhs) per academic year plus tuition remission. Confirm current amounts on your department page and see funding options for Indian students.

Planning note: Contact your prospective PhD advisor by October 2026 for Fall 2027 admission — funding decisions at USD are advisor-led, and early contact materially improves your assistantship odds.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of South Dakota page for your chosen program before applying.

USD Application Process Step-by-Step at University of South Dakota

USD’s application process is single-portal and fast — Indian applicants generally receive decisions within 3 to 6 weeks of a complete submission. The Common Application for Fall 2027 opened on 1 August 2026.

  1. Choose your platform: Undergraduate applicants use the Common App (Fall 2027 cycle open) or the USD direct portal. Graduate applicants use USD Portal or GradCAS.
  2. Pay the application fee: Submit the USD 38 (INR 3,635) application fee via the portal at time of submission.
  3. Upload documents: Include transcripts, passport scan, English test score, and (for PG) SOP, CV, and reference letters.
  4. Submit financial documentation: Upload the Official Statement of Finances covering one full academic year plus living expenses.
  5. Track decision: USD sends admission decisions by email; contingent admission is possible on unofficial transcripts.
  6. Receive I-20: Once fully admitted, USD issues Form I-20 for your F-1 visa application.

Insider note: USD allows contingent admission on unofficial transcripts — you can lock the seat and secure the I-20 while awaiting official document processing from your Indian university.

University of South Dakota Documents Required for Indian Students

Below is the paperwork checklist Indian applicants must upload with the USD international application. Academic thresholds and test scores are covered in the Eligibility section — this list is documentation only.

  • Valid passport: Photo page scan with clear photo, DOB, passport number, expiry, and signature visible.
  • Official academic transcripts: Class X, Class XII, and (for PG) bachelor’s degree mark sheets and provisional certificate.
  • Degree certificate: Attested copy of the completed bachelor’s degree (graduate applicants only).
  • English proficiency score report: Official IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo report sent to USD’s institution code.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): One-page essay for graduate programs describing academic interest and career goals.
  • Letters of Recommendation (LORs): Two to three recommendations from professors or supervisors for graduate applicants.
  • Resume or CV: Highlighting academic projects, work experience, and publications (PG only).
  • Official Statement of Finances: Bank statement showing at least USD 30,000 (INR 28.70 Lakhs) available for the first year.
  • Passport-size photograph: Digital JPEG in recent format.

Indian mark sheets and degree certificates in English do not require additional translation. Documents in regional languages need a certified English translation attached.

USD Acceptance Rate for Indian Students at University of South Dakota

USD’s institutionally reported acceptance rate sits at approximately 98 to 99 percent, placing it among the most access-oriented US public research universities. In the 2023 to 2024 cycle, USD received roughly 5,381 international applications with about 1,380 admissions to the undergraduate cohort.

What the Acceptance Rate at USD Means for Indian Applicants

A near-99 percent institutional rate means USD admits almost every Indian applicant who meets the stated academic and English floor. It does not mean automatic admission — files that fall short of GPA 2.6, ACT 21, or the English minimum are still rejected. Selective programs like Nursing (BSN), MS AI, and MS CS operate at higher effective GPAs (3.0+) and can be more competitive than the institution-wide figure.

USD Program-Level Selectivity

The following programs at University of South Dakota apply tighter selection than the institution-wide floor: BS in Nursing, MS in Artificial Intelligence, MS in Computer Science, and doctoral programs across biology and psychology. For institutional context on how this compares against other public US universities, see acceptance rate patterns across US colleges.

Insider note: USD’s high acceptance rate is a genuine strength for Indian applicants with average academics — it converts an otherwise borderline profile into a viable F-1 visa route, without the essay-and-interview intensity of selective privates.

USA Student Visa Process for University of South Dakota Admits

Indian students admitted to USD apply for the F-1 student visa, the standard non-immigrant category for full-time academic study in the United States. Once USD issues the Form I-20 after admission, applicants schedule a US visa appointment through the US Embassy or Consulate in India.

The process runs in four steps: pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,481), complete the DS-160 form online, pay the visa application fee of USD 185 (INR 17,697), and attend the in-person interview at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad. Financial proof for the interview must cover the full first-year cost of attendance (tuition, fees, living costs) — typically USD 30,000 to 35,000 (INR 28.70 to 33.48 Lakhs) shown as liquid assets, sponsor affidavit, or approved education loan sanction letter.

2026 update: Book your F-1 visa interview slot within 2 weeks of receiving I-20 — wait times at Indian consulates for student visa slots often extend beyond 60 days during May to July peak, and delays can push your USD start date to the following semester.

Post-arrival, students must attend USD’s international student orientation and complete SEVIS check-in with the Gallagher International Center within 30 days of arrival. Refer to the ranking band when preparing your visa interview narrative — US visa officers value clear program-choice rationale.

Tips and Checklist for University of South Dakota

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at USD — they combine strategic timing with the specific paperwork sequence that keeps your file moving.

  • Take IELTS by September 2026 if targeting Spring 2027 — score reporting to USD takes 10 to 13 days after test date.
  • Request transcripts 8 weeks before deadline from your Indian university’s controller of examinations — official mark sheets can take that long to reach USD.
  • Use contingent admission strategically — apply with unofficial transcripts to secure the seat, then submit official documents 30 days before class start.
  • Email your PhD advisor first for doctoral applications — funded assistantships at USD are advisor-driven, and cold applications rarely secure funding.
  • Prepare Statement of Finances in a fixed deposit or education loan sanction format — savings account statements are accepted but scrutinised more heavily by consular officers.
  • Book F-1 visa interview within 2 weeks of I-20 receipt — Indian consulate slots fill quickly in May, June, and July.
  • Apply to USD as a scholarship-eligible option alongside 2 to 3 higher-ranked reaches — the low application friction and high acceptance rate make it a reliable safety.
  • Skip the GMAT if your bachelor’s GPA is 3.0+ — Beacom School of Business waives it and shortens your prep timeline by 3 months.

Popular STEM-designated programs at University of South Dakota qualify for 36-month OPT extension after graduation, a key factor for Indian applicants planning US work experience.

The USD admissions path suits Indian applicants who value predictable admission decisions, transparent English requirements, and access to a US public research university with F-1 visa clarity. Base tuition, application fees, and English minimums are stable — the timing decisions between Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 are the leverage points that determine both scholarship access and OPT clock start.

Overview

Since I was a resident of the state it was very easy for me to get it. I had to take a test called the ACT. I took it twice and got a very decent score. I was immediately accepted into the freshman class that year.

Scholarship

I received a scholarship for writing a short essay on Native American issues in the state. It was just read by the Native American studies department and ranked. I applied for more but only really was awarded that one.
