- Fees at a glance: Base international tuition is $13,616 (₹13.07 Lakhs) per year for UG and $13,441 (₹12.90 Lakhs) per year for graduate programs, with a non-refundable application fee of $38 (₹3,648)

University of South Dakota Application Deadlines
Deadlines below come from the official USD international graduate admissions page and the international undergraduate page. Fall is the primary intake for Indian students at USD, since most graduate and undergraduate programs open here. The current live window is Spring 2027, with Fall 2027 dates to be published in late 2026.
USD’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August), when almost every graduate and undergraduate program opens. Spring is a secondary but active intake covering all business and computing masters plus the standard UG catalogue.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |

| Primary intake Fall 2027 (August) | Graduate | Expected late 2026 | To be published by USD | $38 (₹3,648) | USD Apply or GradCAS |
Planning note: The Fall 2026 cycle has closed, so Indian applicants should target Spring 2027 for the next live start or wait for USD to publish Fall 2027 dates, which historically fall around 15 July for MS CS and 1 August for business programs.
USD does not use fixed application rounds. Once an application file is complete with test scores, transcripts, and financial documents, the admissions office begins its review on a rolling basis. Programs may still close early if the cohort fills, so filing well before the posted deadline is the safe path.
University of South Dakota Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility at USD combines an academic floor with an English-language floor, and the thresholds differ for undergraduate and graduate entry. Figures below are pulled from the official USD international admissions pages and the dedicated English proficiency guidance.
USD Undergraduate Eligibility
- Academic floor: Class XII with US-GPA equivalent of 2.6 on 4.0, which maps to roughly 65 percent in the Indian CBSE or ISC system
- Alternate paths: SAT score of 1070+ or ACT score of 21+ is accepted in place of the GPA cutoff
- English scores: TOEFL iBT 71, IELTS Academic 6.0, Duolingo English Test 105, or PTE Academic 48
- Subject prerequisites: Standard Class XII stream is sufficient for most majors, with mathematics through Class XII required for engineering and computing tracks
USD Graduate Eligibility
- Academic floor: Four-year Bachelor’s with cumulative 2.6 CGPA on 4.0, which maps to about 55 to 60 percent in the Indian system
- English scores: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS Academic 6.0, Duolingo English Test 110, PTE Academic 53, or Cambridge English Test 169
- GRE and GMAT: Waived for MBA, MAcc, MS Business Analytics, MS AI, and MS Computer Science for the current cycle
- Work experience: Not required for the MBA at USD, unlike top-tier programs
USD IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
USD exempts applicants from specified English-speaking countries such as the UK, Canada, and Australia from submitting an English proficiency test. India is not on that country list, so most Indian applicants will need to submit IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE, or Cambridge results. Applicants who completed a full US degree before applying are also exempt.
Insider note: USD’s Duolingo threshold of 110 for graduate entry and 105 for undergraduate entry is well within reach for most Indian applicants, and the test is cheaper than IELTS. Consider Duolingo if IELTS slots are booked out in your city.
University of South Dakota PG Programs and English Requirements
USD offers over 80 graduate programs, with strong Indian-student demand in computing, business, and health administration. Base graduate tuition is $13,441 (₹12.90 Lakhs) per year at 18 credits, and program-specific cost differences are covered on the course-wise fees breakdown available on the university’s course-wise fees breakdown page.

USD’s Beacom School of Business runs the MBA, MAcc, MSBA, MS AI, and MS CS on a shared graduate admissions calendar, so the December deadline for Spring 2027 is consistent across these programs. MS AI and MS Computer Science are STEM-designated, extending OPT from 12 to 36 months.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of South Dakota page for your chosen program before applying.
University of South Dakota Undergraduate Programs
USD offers over 200 undergraduate programs across arts, sciences, business, health, and computing. Base international undergraduate tuition is $13,616 (₹13.07 Lakhs) per year at 30 credits, and each program’s full cost sits on the Fees silo.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| BS Computer Science | 4 years | Class XII at 65 percent with mathematics, or SAT 1070 | IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 71 |
| BBA (Beacom School of Business) | 4 years | Class XII at 65 percent, ACT 21 or SAT 1070 | IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 71 |
| BS Health Sciences | 4 years | Class XII at 65 percent with biology and chemistry | IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 71 |
| BS Biology | 4 years | Class XII at 65 percent with biology and chemistry | IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 71 |
| BA Psychology | 4 years | Class XII at 65 percent in any stream | IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 71 |
| BS Nursing (BSN) | 4 years | Class XII at 70 percent with biology, chemistry, mathematics | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
Undergraduate applicants who fall below the 2.6 GPA floor may still be admitted through a supplemental review that weighs the SAT or ACT score, subject-specific grades, and a personal statement. This is a documented alternative rather than an unofficial workaround.
University of South Dakota MBA Admissions
The Beacom School of Business runs a flexible MBA that accepts Fall and Spring starts, plus a January and August rolling review for the part-time online cohort. Base MBA tuition is roughly $13,441 per year (₹12.90 Lakhs), and Beacom’s graduate scholarships trim this further for strong Indian applicants. Full funding options are on the Scholarships page.
Beacom MBA Deadlines and Format
- Spring 2027 deadline: 5 December 2026 for the full-time and online MBA
- Fall 2027 deadline: To be published by USD, historically 1 August
- Formats offered: Full-time on-campus, part-time online, and executive online
- Class size: Cohorts of around 30 to 40 students
USD MBA Eligibility for Indian Students
Beacom waives GMAT and GRE for the current cycle, so Indian applicants apply on the strength of transcripts, work experience, and a written statement. A four-year Bachelor’s at 2.6 CGPA is the academic floor, with IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 79 as the English requirement.
- Full-time MBA: No mandatory work experience, though a year or more improves the file
- Part-time online MBA: Two years of professional experience preferred
- Executive online MBA: Five years of full-time work experience, including two in a managerial role
- Interview: Optional and conducted via Zoom, used mainly for borderline files or scholarship shortlisting
Insider note: The Beacom MBA is significantly cheaper than most US private MBA programs, and its STEM-designated MS Business Analytics can be paired with MBA electives for Indian applicants who want a longer OPT window.
University of South Dakota PhD Programs
USD offers doctoral programs in Biomedical Sciences, Psychology, Educational Administration, English, and a handful of interdisciplinary tracks. Fully-funded assistantships are the norm for STEM PhDs, with the Sanford School of Medicine covering tuition plus a stipend of around $28,000 (₹26.88 Lakhs) per academic year for its Biomedical Sciences cohort in 2026 to 2027.
USD PhD Application Process
- Contact a prospective faculty supervisor before applying, with your CV and research summary
- Submit the graduate application via USD Apply or GradCAS with statement of purpose, three LORs, transcripts, and an IELTS or TOEFL score
- Complete a Zoom interview if shortlisted, typically two to four weeks after the file is complete
- If admitted, sign the funding letter and begin the F-1 visa process using the I-20 issued by USD
USD PhD Deadlines for Indian Students
Biomedical Sciences and Psychology follow the standard graduate calendar with a 5 December 2026 Spring 2027 deadline and a rolling review through the summer for Fall 2027. Ed Admin and English PhDs review on a rolling basis, but applying at least six months before the intended start is recommended. Funding for Indian students is documented in the Scholarships silo alongside the Assistantship and Fellowship listings.
Planning note: USD PhD assistantship offers are extended after the faculty supervisor confirms lab space and funding, not by the graduate school office. Emailing the target lab is the highest-leverage step in the whole application.

USD uses a streamlined application flow that combines a single online portal with a document-upload window. Indian applicants can expect the full process to run from six weeks to three months, including English test scheduling and I-20 issuance.

University of South Dakota Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
USD publishes an institution-wide acceptance rate of around 98 percent, one of the more welcoming numbers in the US public university system. The figure is not broken out by nationality, but international application data suggests Indian applicants who meet the 2.6 GPA or CGPA floor and hit the IELTS score are admitted at very high rates.
What the Acceptance Rate Means for Indian Applicants
USD is an access-oriented university that admits most applicants who meet its stated requirements. The high acceptance rate does not translate into an easy visa path, since the F-1 visa officer will separately assess academic intent, financial documents, and the applicant’s ties to India. Program-level competitiveness varies too, with the STEM MS programs and the Doctor of Physical Therapy running the tightest cohorts.
How USD Compares in Its Ranking Band
USD is placed at #273 on the US News Best National Universities list for 2026, alongside other US public flagships. Compared with universities in a similar ranking band, USD stands out on affordability, average class size, and assistantship generosity rather than research output.
Insider note: The high acceptance rate at USD makes it a strong safety choice for Indian applicants targeting mid-ranked US universities. Pair a USD application with two or three reach schools to keep the visa timeline clean.
US Student Visa Process for University of South Dakota Applicants
Indian students admitted to USD apply for the F-1 student visa at a US embassy or consulate in India. USD’s admissions office issues the Form I-20 once the applicant submits the statement of finances and the SEVIS record is created. Applicants pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (₹33,600) and the visa application fee of $185 (₹17,760) before booking the biometrics and interview slots.
The interview usually runs five to ten minutes, and the officer will ask about the choice of USD, funding plan, and post-study intent. On approval, the visa is stamped in the passport within a week, and entry into the US is allowed up to 30 days before the program start date. Consular processing timelines for Indian applicants can vary by city, so booking the earliest available slot after receiving the I-20 is the standard advice. Read the deeper walkthrough on the F-1 student visa guide.
2026 update: STEM-designated programs at USD, including MS Computer Science, MS AI, MS Business Analytics, and MAcc, qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. This gives Indian graduates a total of 36 months of work authorisation in the US post-degree.
Tips and Checklist for University of South Dakota
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at USD and the university’s own international-office guidance. They mix insight tips with timeline-anchored actions for the Spring 2027 and Fall 2027 cycles.
- Apply eight weeks before the deadline: USD reviews rolling files, so earlier submissions get earlier I-20s and easier visa slots
- Book IELTS or Duolingo early: IELTS slots fill fast in metros, and Duolingo is a valid backup at 110 for graduate entry
- Email the graduate coordinator before applying: A short introduction to the program coordinator helps flag your file for review and scholarship
- Request transcripts eight weeks before deadline: Indian universities can be slow with transcripts, so start early
- Prepare financial documents four weeks before deadline: Bank statements must reflect the one-year cost of attendance covered on the USA cost-of-living for Indian students guide
- Ask for assistantship consideration: Beacom and Sanford School of Medicine offer teaching and research assistantships, mentioned in the SOP boosts your chance
- Send test scores directly: Use the ETS, IDP, or Duolingo score-send option so USD receives official reports, not scanned copies
- Prepare for the I-20 turnaround: USD dispatches the I-20 within two weeks of admission, so plan the SEVIS payment and visa slot booking around that
- Track the applicant portal weekly: Missing document alerts can otherwise delay decisions by weeks
The University of South Dakota’s Admissions silo pulls together an affordable US public university, rolling deadlines, and no-GRE or no-GMAT graduate paths for Indian applicants targeting Spring 2027 or Fall 2027. Meet the 2.6 GPA or CGPA floor, hit IELTS 6.0, file early, and use the assistantship route to bring the total cost within a comfortable range.

Overview
Since I was a resident of the state it was very easy for me to get it. I had to take a test called the ACT. I took it twice and got a very decent score. I was immediately accepted into the freshman class that year.
Scholarship
I received a scholarship for writing a short essay on Native American issues in the state. It was just read by the Native American studies department and ranked. I applied for more but only really was awarded that one.
