Youngstown State University Admission 2027
Youngstown State University admits international students twice a year, with Fall (August) as the primary intake for Indian applicants and Spring (January) as the secondary window. Most postgraduate programs stay open in both cycles; a few professional programs (Nursing, DPT) admit once per year, so verify the target program page.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 international application deadline | 1 October 2026 | Applies to most graduate programs; PG only, limited UG availability |
| Fall 2027 international application deadline | 15 April 2027 | Primary intake for UG and PG; rolling review, apply early |
| WES/ECE credential evaluation | Start 8-10 weeks before deadline | YSU accepts WES, ECE and other NACES member reports |
| Programme start (Spring 2027) | January 2027 | Orientation week runs before classes |
| Programme start (Fall 2027) | August 2027 | International orientation is mandatory |
[Source: YSU International Programs Office official deadlines page]
Planning note: Book the F-1 visa interview 90-120 days before your programme start date; Indian consulates released 41% of F-1 applications with refusals in 2025, so pad the timeline for a possible 221(g) administrative review before Fall session start.

Youngstown State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must clear academic, language and credential thresholds published by the YSU College of Graduate Studies, alongside general requirements to study in USA.
Postgraduate requirements:
- Recognised four-year bachelor’s degree with minimum GPA 2.7/4.0 (equivalent to 55% or CGPA 5.5/10); some programs require GPA 3.0/4.0 (60% or CGPA 6.0/10)
- TOEFL iBT 79-80 (2026 scale: 4.5), IELTS Academic 6.5, Duolingo 105 for master’s or Duolingo 115 for doctoral; TOEFL paper 550 also accepted
- WES, ECE or other NACES-member credential evaluation submitted directly to YSU
- GRE not required for most programs; a departmental waiver applies when the bachelor’s GPA clears 3.0/4.0
Undergraduate requirements:
- Class 12 pass with minimum 70% (recommended) from CBSE, ICSE or a State Board; STEM programs prefer PCM/PCB stream
- TOEFL iBT 67 (2026 scale: 4), IELTS 6.0 with 5.0 on each band, Duolingo 95 or PTE Academic 50; SAT 920 combined or ACT 17 composite accepted in place of English tests where applicable
Key insight: YSU waives the English test requirement if the applicant completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in English medium and can submit a medium-of-instruction letter from the awarding university; the ELI (English Language Institute) on campus offers a pre-sessional route for conditional admits who fall short.
Youngstown State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Youngstown State University reports an overall acceptance rate of 80.5% (estimated), placing it among the more accessible US public universities. The figure is drawn from third-party admissions aggregations and university-reported IPEDS enrolment data; YSU does not publish a single official annual acceptance rate.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 80.5% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2023 | 79% (estimated) | Broadly stable |
Program-level selectivity is tighter for MS Nursing, Doctor of Physical Therapy and MBA cohorts, which review applicants on a rolling basis. Undergraduate admission is largely test-optional for Indian applicants clearing the Class 12 threshold.
Reality check: A high headline acceptance rate does not translate into automatic funding; graduate assistantships and departmental tuition waivers remain competitive, so Indian applicants should build a genuinely strong SOP, LORs and research fit rather than treat YSU as a safety application.

Youngstown State University Rankings 2027
Youngstown State University’s strongest current ranking is US News Best Colleges 2026, where it sits at #99 in Regional Universities Midwest and #35 in Top Public Schools within the same region, having moved from #101 the year prior.
| Ranking Body | Latest Edition | Previous Edition | Two Editions Back |
|---|---|---|---|
| US News Best Colleges (Regional Universities Midwest) | 2026: #99 | 2025: #101 | 2024: NA |
| US News Top Public Schools (Regional Midwest) | 2026: #35 | 2025: #33 | 2024: NA |
| US News Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs | 2025: #121 | NA | NA |
[Source: US News Best Colleges 2026]
As per US News Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs 2025, YSU is ranked #121 nationally among engineering programs where a doctorate is not the highest degree offered; the university’s Rayen School of Engineering drives this placement. YSU is not currently featured in QS World University Rankings 2027 or THE World University Rankings 2026, in line with the pattern for most US regional public universities.
Key insight: Regional Midwest ranking is what US employers and admissions committees actually read for YSU graduates; the #35 Top Public Schools placement matters for Indian applicants applying for state-funded assistantships and for later loan collateral assessments by Indian banks.
Youngstown State University Placements and Career Outcomes
As per the YSU Graduate Outcome Survey 2023-24, 90.62% of graduates were employed, continuing education or pursuing military or volunteer service within six months of degree completion, exceeding the NACE national average of 85% for bachelor’s graduates.
- Career outcome rate: 90.62% within six months (YSU Graduate Outcome Survey 2023-24)
- Early career pay (bachelor’s): $61,700 (₹58.95 lakh) per PayScale College Salary Report; median 1-year earnings $36,427 (₹34.82 lakh)
- Top engineering starting salary: $70,700 (₹67.55 lakh) for Electrical and Computer Engineering bachelors
- Representative employers: Hospital and health systems, regional manufacturers, financial services and public-sector employers across Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia; specific recruiter list not officially disclosed
- Career support: Cushwa Career and Academic Advising Center runs biannual career fairs, mock interviews and OPT/CPT documentation workshops for international students
Insider note: Indian graduates historically place well into H-1B pipelines through YSU alumni networks in engineering technology, nursing and business analytics; check the annual H1B disclosure data for real hiring signal by employer.
Youngstown State University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below places YSU against three Ohio public universities Indian applicants routinely cross-shop on cost, location and program mix.
| University | US News Regional Midwest 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | One-line Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Youngstown State University | #99 | $11,700 | 11.18 lakh | Lowest PG tuition in Ohio for internationals with STEM OPT eligibility |
| Cleveland State University | #68 | $18,750 | 17.91 lakh | Larger urban campus in Cleveland with stronger co-op links |
| Kent State University | National tier | $21,800 | 20.83 lakh | R1 research designation and broader PhD programme mix |
| Ohio University | National tier | $22,400 | 21.40 lakh | Larger business and journalism reputation, higher fees |
YSU wins on absolute cost and Penguin Tuition Promise stability across four years; peers such as Cleveland State University and Kent State University offer larger cohorts and broader research funding at correspondingly higher tuition. For Indian applicants building a shortlist under a $30,000 all-in annual budget, YSU is the tightest fit in the group.
Youngstown State University makes sense for Indian applicants who want a functional STEM or business master’s under ₹30 lakh all-in, expect a $61,700-$70,700 early-career salary band, and value the F-1 visa and 24-month STEM OPT pathway as the practical Indian-specific advantage. The 80.5% acceptance rate lowers admission risk without diluting the STEM designation.
It is not the right fit for applicants targeting Ivy-tier research profiles, elite consulting or investment banking recruiting or coastal metro networks; a peer such as Ohio University or a top-tier private is the more realistic alternative in those cases.
Youngstown State University FAQs
Ques. What is the application fee for international graduate students at Youngstown State University?
Ans. Youngstown State University charges a $75 application fee for international graduate applicants, payable by credit card or electronic check through the YSU Graduate Application Portal. The fee is non-refundable and covers a single application in a single term; applying to a different program or term requires a separate fee submission. Fee waivers are available on a case-by-case basis for select outreach partnerships but not for open Indian applications.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at YSU?
Ans. Yes, F-1 international students at YSU can work on-campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and 40 hours during official breaks, with no separate work authorisation needed. Off-campus work requires CPT for degree-related internships or OPT after program completion; both require International Programs Office endorsement. Popular on-campus roles include library assistants, dining hall staff and IT help desk positions.
Ques. How does YSU credit transfer work for Indian bachelor’s degree holders?
Ans. Indian bachelor’s degrees are evaluated through WES, ECE or another NACES-member service, which maps three-year and four-year Indian degrees to US equivalents. For master’s admission, YSU requires a four-year bachelor’s equivalence; three-year BCom, BA and BSc holders may need a one-year bridge or additional coursework. Course-level transfer credit for prior graduate work is capped at 6-9 semester hours depending on program.
Ques. Does Youngstown State University accept Duolingo English Test for admission?
Ans. Yes, YSU accepts the Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 105 for master’s programs and 115 for doctoral programs. Undergraduate admission accepts Duolingo 95 as an alternative to TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Academic. Scores must be less than two years old on the date of application. The test is convenient for Indian applicants unable to book IELTS or TOEFL slots within tight application windows.
Ques. Is a GRE waiver available for Youngstown State University master’s programs?
Ans. Most YSU master’s programs do not require the GRE; a formal waiver applies when the applicant’s undergraduate GPA is 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (roughly 60% or CGPA 6.0 for Indian applicants). Engineering, computing and business programs review GRE scores when submitted but do not penalise strong applications without them. The MS Nursing and select doctoral programs may still require GRE or program-specific tests.
Ques. Which loan providers finance study at YSU for Indian students?
Ans. YSU is recognised by major Indian education lenders including HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred, Auxilo and Prodigy Finance for both secured and unsecured education loans. Public sector banks such as SBI and Bank of Baroda also finance YSU admits under the Vidya Lakshmi and BOB Scholar programs. Sanction typically takes 8-15 working days after the I-20 is issued; a collateralised loan gets better interest rates and larger limits.
Ques. What documents must Indian applicants submit for the F-1 visa at YSU?
Ans. Indian F-1 applicants submit the YSU-issued I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS fee receipt of $350, a passport valid at least six months beyond the program end date, a passport-size photo, the visa fee receipt of $185, and financial documentation showing one year of tuition and living costs. Interview slots are booked through the US embassy portal; carry academic transcripts and admission letter to the interview.
Ques. Does Youngstown State University offer graduate assistantships to first-year international students?
Ans. Yes, first-year international graduate students with strong credentials are eligible for YSU graduate assistantships, which combine tuition remission with a stipend for 20 hours of work per week in a department-related role. Allocations are made by the Dean of Graduate Studies on department recommendation, so Indian applicants should email their target department chair immediately after receiving admission to be flagged for the current cycle.

- It offered the most scholarship amount and the faculty had good research projects to participate in.
Overview
YSU is a great college for anyone who wants to get a graduate degree from a State college for a reasonable price. The locations of the university isn’t the best given that 2 nearest cities(Cleveland and Pittsburgh) are more than an hour away. The curriculum is good but could be better.
Campus Life
Campus location isn't great. There’s not much to do outside of campus if you don’t drive. Campus has a decent infrastructure and provides all the basic amenities any student would expect from a school. Great wifi and study lounges/cafes around the campus. Library is also good and the hours could be better but they extend the hours near exam week. There’s a decent selection of clubs on campus to participate in the Youngstown Downtown is walkable distance to go to on weekends.
