Ohio University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Master’s funding at Ohio University runs through graduate assistantships and departmental awards. Teaching Assistantships carry the largest package, combining a stipend with a full tuition waiver in exchange for 15 to 20 hours of weekly work.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Teaching Assistantship | USD 17,200 stipend (INR 16.42 Lakhs) plus full tuition scholarship | 3.00 plus GPA; program-nominated | With admission decision |
| Grant-Funded Research Assistantship | USD 15,500 stipend (INR 14.79 Lakhs) plus USD 4,094 per-semester waiver (INR 3.91 Lakhs) | PI-nominated on funded projects | Rolling; tied to grant cycles |
| Graduate Recruitment Scholarship (GRS) | USD 1,050 (INR 1.00 Lakh) plus partial tuition scholarship | Competitively nominated at admission | With admission decision |
| David M. Crane Graduate Fellowship | USD 9,500 (INR 9.07 Lakhs) | CIS Master’s applicants; alumni preference | March 15, 2027 |
| Drs. Sadek and Anne Samaan Scholarship | Variable stipend award | Second-year CIS Master’s; 3.5 plus GPA; international preferred | March 15, 2027 |
| Ohio International Consortium Outstanding Graduate Award | USD 1,500 (INR 1.43 Lakhs) | Graduate F-1 or J-1 applicants | February 1, 2027 |
| CIS Fund for Student Travel, Research, Internships | USD 1,500 (INR 1.43 Lakhs) | CIS graduate students | March 15, 2027 |
A Teaching Assistantship offer is the single most valuable outcome for an Indian Master’s applicant. The waiver and stipend combined leave only about USD 3,000 (INR 2.86 Lakhs) in living expenses uncovered against the USD 46,826 i20 estimate.
Reddit Insight: Indian CIS Master’s applicants report that the March 15 departmental cycle is separate from admission and skipping it leaves USD 1,500 to USD 9,500 unclaimed, even after acceptance is confirmed.
India-Specific Scholarships at Ohio University
Ohio University does not run any India-only scholarships. Five internationally-open awards match Indian eligibility criteria most closely and Indian applicants win them each cycle.
- OHIO Excellence Scholarship: USD 6,500 (INR 6.20 Lakhs) annual, four-year renewable; open to all international first-year admits including Indian nationals.
- Charles J. Ping International Leadership Award: Awarded to F-1 or J-1 UG students with campus leadership records; Indian student council leads and Indian Students Association officers commonly apply.
- Ohio International Consortium Outstanding Student Award: USD 1,500 (INR 1.43 Lakhs) for graduating F-1 or J-1 students; February 1, 2027 deadline.
- Joann B. Stedman International Grant Fund: Emergency grant for international students facing unexpected financial crisis; case-by-case review through the Office of Global Affairs.
- Daniel K.C. Shao Scholarship: USD 2,500 (INR 2.39 Lakhs) for Ohio students studying abroad with Asia-region preference; useful for Indian students pursuing an exchange semester back in India or another Asian country.
None of the above carry a nationality quota. Indian applicants compete in a global pool, so the strongest lever is a clean academic record plus documented leadership. Explore More Ohio University Programs and Courses
Ohio University PhD Scholarships
Doctoral funding at Ohio University is department-driven, not centrally coordinated. Physics and Astronomy publishes the highest PhD stipend at USD 25,000, well above the USD 17,200 university-wide Teaching Assistantship baseline.
| Scholarship | Annual Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doctoral Teaching Assistantship | USD 17,200 stipend (INR 16.42 Lakhs) plus full tuition waiver | Department-nominated PhD admits | With admission decision |
| Physics and Astronomy Doctoral TA | USD 25,000 (INR 23.86 Lakhs), renewable | Physics PhD applicants | With admission decision; tentative February 2027 |
| Claude Kantner Graduate Fellowship | Full tuition waiver plus stipend; no service required | Communication Studies PhD applicants | March 15, 2027 |
| Graduate Student Senate Enhancement Award | Up to USD 6,000 (INR 5.73 Lakhs) | Enrolled graduate students for research or conference travel | Rolling; tentative quarterly windows through 2027 |
An Indian PhD applicant should target a department where funding letters land with the admission decision. The Council of Graduate Schools April 15, 2027 acceptance rule protects your right to weigh competing offers.
Reddit Insight: Indian Physics PhD applicants say the USD 25,000 stipend offers reach inboxes in late February after the departmental funding committee meets; earlier applications hit the front of the queue.

JN Tata loans are lightweight paperwork against the INR 44.70 Lakhs cost-of-attendance benchmark. Explore More Ohio University Rankings
Ohio University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian UG student can get at Ohio University?
Ans. Honors Tutorial College admits can combine OHIO Premier at USD 14,582 (INR 13.92 Lakhs) with OHIO Excellence at USD 6,500 (INR 6.20 Lakhs) for USD 21,082 in annual institutional aid. That stack covers 79% of the 2026-27 tuition and fees of USD 26,792. Non-HTC Indian first-year admits typically receive Excellence alone, which cuts sticker cost by 24%.
Ques. When should Indian students apply for Ohio University scholarships?
Ans. Submit the UG application by November 15, 2026 for Early Action to maximise merit consideration; the extended deadline is January 15, 2027. Graduate assistantship offers arrive with admission letters, typically January to April 2027 for the Fall 2027 intake. Departmental awards including the CIS Endowment and Crane Fellowship have separate March 15, 2027 deadlines.
Ques. Do I need a separate application for Ohio University scholarships?
Ans. Most institutional UG awards including Excellence and Premier are automatic based on the admission file. Graduate assistantships require program-level nomination by faculty during admission review, so a strong SOP matters. Departmental awards such as the David M. Crane Fellowship and CIS Endowment need a separate March 15, 2027 submission through the Center for International Studies portal.
Ques. How competitive is the OHIO Excellence Scholarship for Indian students?
Ans. OHIO Excellence is the default merit award for admitted international first-year applicants, not a competitive lottery. It runs test-optional and weights high school GPA plus curriculum rigour. Indian CBSE and ICSE applicants scoring 85% plus or IB candidates at 32 points plus hit the threshold routinely, and it renews annually with a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Ques. Does an Ohio University scholarship cover living costs in Athens, Ohio?
Ans. The i20 estimate of USD 46,826 (INR 44.70 Lakhs) includes USD 14,554 (INR 13.89 Lakhs) for room, board, books, and personal expenses. A Graduate Teaching Assistantship package covers full tuition plus a USD 17,200 stipend, leaving roughly USD 3,000 (INR 2.86 Lakhs) uncovered on living costs annually. UG merit awards apply to tuition only and do not touch living expenses directly.
Ques. What do current Indian students say about actually getting funded at Ohio University?
Ans. Indian STEM Master’s students on Reddit report that TA nominations are program-driven, so Physics, Chemistry, and Engineering fund more students than Business or Communication. Applying by January for Fall 2027 gives your file the best shot at nomination before departmental slots fill. First-generation international applicants should also flag the Manasseh Cutler Scholars program at UG level, which pays four years of tuition plus travel funds.

- Ohio University offers various funding opportunities like Teaching Assistanships, Research Assistanships and Graduate Assistanships. Eligibility criteria for TA and GA is to have a speaking score of at least 6.5 in IELTS and CGPA should be above 3 out of 4. As far as RA is concerned, it is subject to the professor's interests and your skills, etc. Apart from the above mentioned, a student has to opt for the thesis path in order to be considered for these positions.
- I have worked as a TA for 2 semester's. For students working as TA/GA, there will be a full tuition waiver and a stipend of up to $6,000 per semester. For RA, a stipend of up to $8,000 per semester with tuition waiver. On average, 10 to 15 students receive scholarships every semester.
- I have opted to stay off campus as staying on campus is too expensive, although it is very good.
- Off-campus, I'm staying in a community called Campus Heights; here I pay 950$ for a 2-bed, 1-bathroom apartment. I share with a friend; hence, I pay half of the amount mentioned. This includes all the utilities and electricity. We have to pay for wifi separately, which costs about $50 per month. So, in total, it's about $1,000.
- My experience is average with the place where I stay. It is still considered good for that price because it comes with furniture also. I would highly recommend it to any students planning to pursue their higher studies here.
- This place is just 1 mile away from the university. There is also a university shuttle scheduled for every 30 minutes.
