Graduate applications open mid-September 2026 with December deadlines and a USD 155 (INR 14,810) international application fee.

University of California, Berkeley Application Deadlines for Indian Students

UC Berkeley operates a single main Fall intake for undergraduates, driven by the University of California (UC) systemwide November 30 deadline. Graduate programs open in mid-September, with most departments closing between December 1 and January 15. There is no early decision or early action at Berkeley. Dates below are drawn from the official UC Berkeley Dates and Deadlines page.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 95.55 (July 2026). Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

University of California, Berkeley Undergraduate Deadline Notes

The undergraduate application filing window is October 1 to November 30, 2026, with a single fixed close on November 30. Berkeley does not accept late materials. Financial aid forms carry a separate March 2, 2027 priority date. Deposit for admitted first-year students falls on May 1, 2027.

University of California, Berkeley Graduate Deadline Notes

Graduate deadlines are set by each department, not by the Graduate Division centrally. Highly ranked departments such as EECS and Statistics close on December 8, 2026. Others close on December 15 or January 15, 2027. Confirm your specific program’s date on the departmental page before drafting your Statement of Purpose (SOP).

Planning note: UC Berkeley closes hard on the stated date — no rolling extension. Indian applicants should book the TOEFL or IELTS before mid-October 2026 to keep buffer for a rescheduling window.

University of California, Berkeley Admissions Eligibility for Indian Students

Berkeley sets a firm floor at the university level, then each department layers its own program-specific requirements. Indian applicants need to clear both the university-wide academic minimums and their program’s stricter bar. The English proficiency requirement is where most Indian applicants can claim a straightforward waiver.

  • UG general entry: Class XII around 85 percent, with strong Mathematics and English scores.
  • PG general entry: Bachelor’s degree with minimum 3.0 GPA (around 60 percent Indian marking).
  • UG English floor: TOEFL 90, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo English Test 115.
  • PG English floor: TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7.0 overall.
  • UG test policy: Berkeley is test-blind, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not accepted or considered.

Graduate applicants to competitive STEM programs typically present a Bachelor’s around 75 to 80 percent (a 3.5 GPA or better), well above the 3.0 floor. Some programs also expect prerequisite coursework in the discipline.

University of California, Berkeley IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Undergraduate applicants who have completed three or more years of instruction in English at their secondary school satisfy the English proficiency requirement without submitting an IELTS or TOEFL score. Most CBSE, ICSE, and IB-medium Indian schools qualify by default. Graduate applicants qualify for the waiver only if the Bachelor’s degree was earned from an English-medium institution in an English-speaking country, or via one year of full-time coursework at a US institution with grades of B or better. Indian graduate applicants therefore usually need to submit a valid test score even if their Bachelor’s was English-medium.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official UC Berkeley Graduate Admissions page for your chosen program before applying.

University of California, Berkeley Graduate Programs for Indian Students

Berkeley offers over 100 graduate degrees across engineering, computer science, business, public policy, and the sciences. The table below covers programs Indian applicants most commonly target, with the university-wide English minimum stated per row. Base tuition for new nonresident Master’s students in 2026-27 is USD 41,175 per year (INR 39.34 Lakhs), before living costs, insurance, and program-specific fees — see the detailed course-wise fees breakdown for exact figures per program.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
MS Computer Science / EECS 2 years Bachelor’s in CS or related, GPA 3.0+ IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MEng (Master of Engineering) 1 year Bachelor’s in engineering, GPA 3.0+ IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MIMS (Master of Information Management and Systems) 2 years Bachelor’s in any field, GPA 3.0+ IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MIDS (Master of Information and Data Science, online) 1.5 to 3 years Bachelor’s with quant background, GPA 3.0+ IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MFE (Master of Financial Engineering) 1 year Bachelor’s in quant field, work experience preferred IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MS Mechanical Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s in ME, GPA 3.0+ IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MS Civil and Environmental Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s in CE, GPA 3.0+ IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MPP (Master of Public Policy) 2 years Bachelor’s, GPA 3.0+, policy or research exposure IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90
MPH (Master of Public Health) 2 years Bachelor’s, GPA 3.0+, health or science background IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 90

Berkeley requires all graduate applicants to submit a Statement of Purpose and a Personal History Statement, plus three letters of recommendation and official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended.

Insider note: Berkeley graduate programs treat the SOP as the deciding document once your GPA clears the 3.0 floor. Indian applicants with strong Class XII and a 75 percent Bachelor’s should focus their prep time on the SOP rather than chasing another test retake.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official UC Berkeley program page for your chosen program before applying.

University of California, Berkeley Undergraduate Programs for Indian Students

Indian applicants at the undergraduate level apply through the UC systemwide application, which is used across all nine UC campuses. Berkeley admits first-year students only for the Fall term. The table below shows the most-applied UG programs among Indian students, with English requirements sourced from Berkeley’s Basic Admission Requirements page.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BS Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) 4 years Class XII around 90 percent, strong Mathematics and Physics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90
BA Computer Science (Letters and Science) 4 years Class XII around 85 percent, Mathematics through Class XII IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90
BS Business Administration (Haas) 4 years (2 years at Haas after 2 years pre-business) Class XII around 88 percent, strong essays IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90
BS Data Science 4 years Class XII around 85 percent, Mathematics through Class XII IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90
BS Mechanical Engineering 4 years Class XII around 88 percent, Mathematics and Physics through Class XII IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 90

Base tuition for a new nonresident undergraduate in 2026-27 is USD 63,050 per year (INR 60.25 Lakhs), before campus fees, living costs, and health insurance. Applicants pay a USD 95 (INR 9,077) application fee per campus, so applying to multiple UC campuses on the same form multiplies the total fee.

University of California, Berkeley Haas MBA Admissions for Indian Students

The Haas School of Business runs three MBA formats. Only the Full-time MBA is open to international students on an F-1 visa. Evening & Weekend and Executive MBA formats require in-person attendance in the San Francisco Bay Area and are aimed at working professionals with US work authorization.

University of California, Berkeley Full-time MBA

The Full-time MBA is a two-year residential program. Haas uses a three-round application cycle, with rounds typically closing in September, January, and April. Round 2 (January) is the recommended window for Indian applicants because it balances scholarship consideration with visa-processing lead time. Applicants need a Bachelor’s degree, a competitive GMAT or GRE score, and typically four to six years of full-time work experience.

University of California, Berkeley Evening and Weekend / Executive MBA

These variants require applicants to work in the Bay Area during the program. The Evening & Weekend MBA runs about three years, while the Executive MBA runs 19 months and is designed for candidates with 10+ years of experience. Both formats are effectively closed to Indian applicants applying from India, as F-1 sponsorship is not offered.

Insider note: Haas gives explicit weight to its "Defining Principles" — question the status quo, confidence without attitude, students always, beyond yourself. Indian applicants who thread these into essays with concrete examples land interviews at a higher rate than those who lead with academic metrics alone. Check funding options for Indian students for merit awards that offset Haas tuition.

University of California, Berkeley PhD Admissions for Indian Students

UC Berkeley admits PhD applicants directly into departmental programs. Applications open in mid-September 2026 for Fall 2027 entry, with most STEM departments closing on December 1 or December 8, 2026. PhD applicants are evaluated on research fit, prior publications or projects, and faculty match, more than on GPA alone.

University of California, Berkeley PhD Funding for Indian Students

Berkeley PhD admits receive a multi-year funding package that typically covers full tuition and fees plus a stipend. In the 2025-26 academic year the Graduate Division baseline stipend for PhD students exceeded USD 40,000 (around INR 38.22 Lakhs) per year for most STEM programs, with departments layering top-ups for teaching or research assistantships. Health insurance is included through the Berkeley Student Health Insurance Plan.

University of California, Berkeley PhD Application Requirements

Indian PhD applicants need a strong Bachelor’s or Master’s (typically 3.5 GPA or higher), a research-focused SOP, three academic recommenders, and a valid TOEFL or IELTS score. GRE is program-dependent — EECS made it optional, while several sciences still require it. Verify the specific requirement on the departmental page.

University of California, Berkeley Application Process for Indian Students

Berkeley uses two distinct portals depending on level. Undergraduates apply through the UC systemwide portal, which is shared across all UC campuses. Graduate applicants apply through the department-linked Berkeley Graduate Application. The steps below cover the sequence Indian applicants follow from account creation to submission.

  1. Create your portal account on ApplyUC (undergraduate) or gradapp.berkeley.edu (graduate) once applications open.
  2. Enter academic history including every school and college attended from Class IX onwards, with grades entered exactly as reported.
  3. Draft your Personal Insight Questions (UG) or your Statement of Purpose plus Personal History Statement (Grad).
  4. Request three letters of recommendation for graduate applicants; UG applicants do not submit LORs.
  5. Upload official transcripts and English test scorecards through the portal.
  6. Pay the application fee of USD 95 (INR 9,077) for undergraduate applicants or USD 155 (INR 14,810) for international graduate applicants.
  7. Submit before the deadline at 8:59 PM Pacific Time on the closing date, which converts to roughly 9:30 AM IST the next day.

Berkeley expects transcripts and test scores from all applicants but does not require notarised documents at the application stage. Official documents are collected only after an admission offer is accepted.

University of California, Berkeley Admission Decisions

Berkeley notifies undergraduate applicants at the end of March 2027 through the applicant portal and confirmation email. Graduate decisions are released department by department between late January and April 2027. Indian applicants should track the portal, not just email, since spam filters occasionally block Berkeley messages.

  • UG first-year decision release: End of March 2027.
  • UG transfer decision release: End of April 2027.
  • Graduate decision release: Late January to April 2027 (department-specific).
  • UG deposit deadline: May 1, 2027 to secure the seat.
  • Transfer deposit deadline: June 1, 2027.
  • Deferral policy: UG deferrals are considered case-by-case; graduate deferrals are program-specific.

Planning note: Between decision and May 1 deposit, Indian admits have roughly five weeks to finalise loan sanction, book the F-1 visa slot, and reserve housing. Start loan pre-approval before the decision date if you are targeting Berkeley.

University of California, Berkeley Documents Required

Berkeley expects a compact document set at the application stage, with additional originals collected only after enrolment. Indian applicants should keep certified copies ready but avoid over-submitting.

  • Valid Indian passport with at least six months of remaining validity.
  • Class X and Class XII marksheets and certificates (for UG applicants).
  • Official Bachelor’s transcripts and provisional degree certificate (for PG applicants).
  • Statement of Purpose and Personal History Statement (graduate).
  • Personal Insight Questions responses (undergraduate).
  • Three letters of recommendation, uploaded by referees (graduate).
  • TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo score report sent to Berkeley’s institution code.
  • GRE or GMAT scorecard where the program requires it.
  • Current CV or resume listing internships, projects, and publications.
  • Financial documents (bank statements, sponsor affidavit) at the visa stage, not the application stage.

Indian applicants do not need notarised copies at the point of submission. Berkeley accepts scanned uploads and requests originals only during pre-arrival verification.

University of California, Berkeley Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Berkeley’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate for the 2025-26 cycle sat at around 11.4 percent. The university does not publish a separate acceptance rate for Indian applicants, but international UG selectivity is sharper than the aggregate, with published estimates in the 5 to 8 percent range based on competitive-intake patterns. Graduate acceptance rates vary widely by department. See the university’s placement outcomes to weigh the yield beyond the admit rate.

University of California, Berkeley UG Acceptance Rate Detail

Berkeley is test-blind at the UG level, meaning SAT and ACT scores play no role. Weight shifts to Class XII grades, essays (called Personal Insight Questions), extracurricular depth, and demonstrated academic rigour. Engineering and Haas Business Administration are the two most selective UG paths for Indian applicants.

University of California, Berkeley Graduate Acceptance Rate Detail

Departmental acceptance rates cluster around 5 to 15 percent for STEM Master’s, with EECS and Statistics running below 8 percent. Indian applicants with a strong first-class Bachelor’s, a research-oriented SOP, and one to two publications compete effectively. The MEng one-year track is generally more accessible than the two-year MS.

Insider note: Berkeley’s admissions committee reads Indian transcripts with the JEE-Advanced peer group in mind. IITs, BITS Pilani, IIITs, and NITs carry recognised weight; strong candidates from other tier-1 institutions should quantify their national percentile to close the gap.

USA F-1 Student Visa for University of California, Berkeley Students

Indian students at Berkeley study on the F-1 student visa. Once you accept the admission offer and pay the deposit, Berkeley International Office issues a Form I-20, which lists your program details and estimated cost of attendance. You then pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,443), complete the DS-160 form, book a visa interview slot at the nearest US consulate (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata), and pay the USD 185 (INR 17,677) visa application fee.

Financial proof needs to cover the first year’s cost of attendance stated on the I-20, backed by bank statements from the sponsor or a sanctioned education loan letter. F-1 status allows on-campus work up to 20 hours per week during term. Post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) offers 12 months of work rights; STEM programs qualify for a 24-month extension, giving Indian STEM graduates up to 36 months of US work eligibility after graduation.

2026 update: US consular visa interview wait times in India remain elevated. Book your F-1 slot within one week of receiving the I-20, ideally targeting a June or early July 2027 interview for a mid-August 2027 arrival at Berkeley.

Tips for University of California, Berkeley Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UC Berkeley over recent cycles.

  • Book English test by mid-October 2026 to keep a rescheduling buffer before the November 30 UG deadline.
  • Use the LOI waiver for UG if your school was English-medium for three or more years.
  • Target Round 2 for Haas MBA in January 2027 to balance scholarship and visa timelines.
  • Draft PIQ essays around specific stories, not credentials; Berkeley reads for character depth.
  • Line up two academic and one project-based recommender for PG applications by early October 2026.
  • Pre-approve an education loan before the March 2027 decision to avoid a rushed May deposit.

University of California, Berkeley Admissions Checklist for Indian Students

The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete on the timeline leading up to a Fall 2027 offer.

  • 16 weeks before deadline: Register for TOEFL, IELTS, or GRE test slot.
  • 12 weeks before deadline: Request Bachelor’s or Class XII transcripts from your institution.
  • 10 weeks before deadline: Brief three recommenders and share your CV and SOP draft.
  • 8 weeks before deadline: Complete first full draft of SOP or Personal Insight Questions.
  • 4 weeks before deadline: Finalise portal profile, upload transcripts, submit test scores.
  • Deadline week: Pay the application fee and submit at least 24 hours before the cut-off.

UC Berkeley opens undergraduate applications on August 1, 2026 and closes on November 30, 2026 for Fall 2027; graduate deadlines follow in December. Indian applicants clear the Class XII or Bachelor’s floor, secure the LOI waiver where possible, and submit early. Loan sanction and F-1 booking start immediately after the March decision release.

Overview

The University of California is one of the best universities in the world and also quite popular for its study programmes and the campus . The admission process is hard and can be confusing sometime but if you have good knowledge and have talked to any student of this college earler then you will not find any problem. Firstly you have to give the GMAT exam in which you have to score more than 720 marks out of 800 to get a seat there and then have to apply for admission online. You can apply for admission online yet you have any problem than instead of visiting any consultant you must go and talk to a alumni of the college.

Overview

UC Berkeley is ranked extremely highly. They have a great engineering program as well as Nuclear Engineering. The location was amazing in terms of weather as well as prospective internships in silicon valley. It also had many great programs so that I could take more classes, and as such I am minoring in Environmental Policy and Economics. Academics can be challenging as you are surrounded by some of the brightest people. However, studying hard as well as rounding yourself off as a person can be very easy if you put your mind to it. The university offers every chance possible to do so

I got into Cornell as well but I chose Berkeley because I wanted to be near a city and in warmer weather and a school which is more fun. I chose to major in Econ because Berkeley has very highly acclaimed economics professors. I have also taken many legal studies classes because Berkeley has a culture and history of activism and I really liked all the professors.

Overview

I chose UC Berkeley because of its location and ideal temperature. It is one of the more distinguished schools and more students are accepted into Medical school when applying with UC Berkeley as your alma mater.

Scholarship

I am basically getting a full ride to attend the school, both from financial aid given by the school, and government help. I have a few outside scholarships of around $1000 each. And I also receive help from disability programs at my school.

Overview

The English program is ranked very high and I was accepted. I received higher financial aid here than my other top choice, and the school has a great reputation. The housing is expensive, but if you look hard it won't break the bank. Professors have great reputations as well, great for letters of recommendation.

Scholarship

I accepted the blue and gold opportunity plan (or something like that) which covered tuition and fees and gave a small housing stipend (think a month and a half). Sometime the financial aid will release late, but I did always get the money.
