University of California, Berkeley Application Deadlines for Fall 2027
Berkeley runs one main intake each year in Fall (August). Undergraduates apply through the University of California’s centralized UC Application portal, used by all nine UC campuses, while master’s and PhD applicants apply directly through Berkeley’s Graduate Division. Dates below are drawn from the official Berkeley admissions dates page and the Graduate Division requirements page.
UC Berkeley’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall 2027 (August 2027) — most programs open here, and no Spring intake is offered for the vast majority of majors.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | Undergraduate | 1 August 2026 | 30 November 2026 | $95 (₹8,978) | UC Application |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | Graduate Master’s | Mid-September 2026 | 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 (varies by program) | $155 (₹14,648) | Berkeley Graduate Application |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | PhD | Mid-September 2026 | 1 to 15 December 2026 (most programs) | $155 (₹14,648) | Berkeley Graduate Application |
| Fall 2027 | Haas Full-Time MBA | August 2026 | Round 2 typically early January 2027 | $200 (₹18,900) | Haas MBA portal |
Planning note: Berkeley reviews UG applications in one batch after 30 November, so an early submission gains no advantage — but transcripts and English scores must be verified before the deadline closes.
University of California, Berkeley Eligibility for Indian Students
Berkeley evaluates Indian applicants on academic rigour, English proficiency, and (for graduate programs) prior degree fit. Undergraduate admission is test-blind — Berkeley does not accept or consider SAT or ACT scores in the review — so Class XII performance carries the decision.
- UG general entry: Class XII from a recognised Indian board, typically 85 percent and above for competitive majors like Computer Science and EECS.
- PG general entry: A four-year Bachelor’s from a recognised university with a minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA (roughly 60 percent Indian marking, or a first class).
- English for UG: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, or Duolingo 115.
- English for PG: IELTS 7.0 overall or TOEFL iBT 90. PTE is accepted by some programs, so verify per department.
- Test policy: No SAT or ACT for UG. GRE is required by only a subset of PhD programs and is waived by most Master’s tracks.
University of California, Berkeley English Test Waiver Options
Berkeley publishes English proficiency waivers that Indian applicants often qualify for. Undergraduate applicants are exempted if they have completed three or more years of high school instruction (Language of Instruction) in English, which applies to most CBSE, ICSE, and international-board schools. Graduate applicants can waive the test if their Bachelor’s was completed at an English-medium university in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada (except Quebec), Australia, New Zealand, or Singapore, or if they finished at least one year of US coursework with grades of B or better.
Insider note: Berkeley Graduate Division does not automatically accept an English-medium Indian degree as a waiver — the country-of-instruction rule is strict, and Indian Bachelor’s holders should plan to submit IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90 in almost every case.
University of California, Berkeley Master’s Programs for Indian Students
Berkeley’s Graduate Division offers over 100 Master’s tracks across engineering, business, public policy, design, and the sciences. University of California, Berkeley Haas MBA Admissions
The Haas School of Business runs Berkeley’s flagship MBA offerings: a two-year Full-Time MBA, a three-year Evening and Weekend MBA (for Bay Area residents), and the Berkeley Executive MBA. Indian applicants overwhelmingly target the Full-Time MBA, which admits roughly 250 students each Fall. Tuition for the Full-Time MBA runs above the standard Master’s rate — expect the total two-year cost of attendance to be published each spring on the Haas site.
University of California, Berkeley MBA Application Rounds
Haas Full-Time MBA opens in three rounds. Round 1 typically closes in late September, Round 2 in early January, and Round 3 in late March or early April. Indian applicants are strongly encouraged to submit by Round 2 to be competitive for scholarship consideration. GMAT or GRE is required, and Haas states an average GMAT around 730 with roughly five years of work experience.
University of California, Berkeley Haas MBA Interview Format
Interviews are by invitation only and conducted virtually for most international candidates. The Haas admissions committee typically extends interview invites two to three weeks before decision release. Full-Time MBA does not admit applicants without post-Bachelor’s work experience — the average is five years, and applications with fewer than three years generally do not clear the resume screen.
Note: Round dates and application requirements are published on the Haas MBA site each admissions cycle. Verify the Fall 2027 rounds on the official Haas page before submitting.
University of California, Berkeley PhD Admissions for Indian Students
Berkeley’s PhD tracks are among the most funded in the United States. Non-resident doctoral tuition is $41,237 (₹38.97 Lakhs) per year, but nearly all admitted PhD students receive a full funding package covering tuition plus a stipend of around $38,000 to $45,000 per year for the 2026-27 academic year — see the funding options for Indian students page for a broader list.
- Deadline: Most PhD programs close between 1 and 15 December 2026 for Fall 2027 entry.
- Eligibility: Bachelor’s or Master’s in a related field with a 3.0/4.0 GPA minimum.
- Research fit: A statement of purpose that names 2 to 4 potential faculty advisors is expected across STEM and social science tracks.
- GRE: Waived by most departments, still required by a minority — verify per program.
Note: PhD funding, stipend amounts, and GRE requirements vary by department. Confirm on the official Berkeley Graduate Division page for your chosen program before applying.
University of California, Berkeley Application Process for Indian Students
Undergraduate and graduate applications use different portals and require different documents. Follow the steps below to submit a complete Berkeley application from India.
- Register on the correct portal. UG applicants use the UC Application, which opened for the Fall 2027 cycle on 1 August 2026. Graduate applicants use the Berkeley Graduate Application, which opens mid-September 2026.
- Pay the application fee. The UG fee is $95 (₹8,978) per UC campus. The graduate fee is $155 (₹14,648) per program. Fees are non-refundable.
- Upload academic records. Self-report Class XII marks (UG) or scanned Bachelor’s transcripts and marksheets (PG). Official transcripts are requested only after admission.
- Submit English test scores. Send IELTS or TOEFL scores directly to Berkeley’s institutional code well before the deadline.
- Write the essays and PIQs. UG applicants complete four Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) — 350-word essays that replace a traditional common essay. PG applicants write a Statement of Purpose and, where required, a Personal History Statement.
- Arrange recommendation letters. Graduate programs need three academic or professional LORs, uploaded by recommenders through the portal.
- Track your application. Berkeley releases UG decisions by end of March 2027 and graduate decisions on a program-specific timeline between February and April 2027.
Reality check: Berkeley does not accept the Common Application for undergraduates. Indian students often assume a Common App submission covers Berkeley — it does not, and the UC Application must be filed separately by 30 November 2026.
University of California, Berkeley Documents Required for Indian Students
Prepare the paperwork below before starting your Berkeley application. Original scans in English are required at the application stage. Certified copies with the university seal are requested only if you are admitted.
- Passport: Valid Indian passport with at least six months of validity beyond the intake date.
- Class XII marksheet: Board-issued Class X and XII marksheets and certificates for UG applicants.
- Bachelor’s transcripts: Semester-wise marksheets and provisional or final degree certificate for PG and PhD applicants.
- English test score report: IELTS TRF, TOEFL iBT report, or Duolingo score card.
- Statement of Purpose: Program-specific SOP for graduate applications (typically 1,000 to 1,500 words).
- Personal Insight Questions (UG): Four 350-word PIQ essays uploaded within the UC Application.
- Letters of Recommendation: Two to three LORs for graduate programs, uploaded by the recommender.
- CV or resume: One-page CV listing education, research, work experience, and publications.
- Financial documents: Bank statements or affidavit of support, requested after admission for the I-20.
- Portfolio or writing sample: Design or writing samples for architecture, journalism, and creative arts programs.
University of California, Berkeley Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
Berkeley remains one of the most selective public universities in the world. The overall acceptance rate for the 2025-26 cycle was around 11.4 percent across roughly 128,000 UG applications — see the current Berkeley ranking band for how this selectivity compares against peers.
University of California, Berkeley UG Selectivity for Indian Students
Berkeley does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international or Indian applicants, but the international admit rate is estimated at 5 to 8 percent, based on the tighter non-resident quota that UC campuses operate under state guidance. Applicants to EECS, Computer Science, and Business Administration face notably lower rates than the campus average.
University of California, Berkeley Graduate Program Selectivity
Master’s and PhD acceptance rates vary sharply by department. Full-Time MBA (Haas) admits roughly 10 to 12 percent of applicants. EECS PhD and CS Master’s rates drop below 5 percent. Public Policy, Public Health, and Development Practice programs sit closer to 20 percent.
Insider note: Berkeley reviews UG applications holistically — the four Personal Insight Questions carry as much weight as the transcript, and generic essays sink otherwise strong Indian applicants faster than any single low mark.
USA Student Visa Process for University of California, Berkeley Admits
Indian admits to Berkeley need an F-1 student visa to enter the United States. The process starts only after Berkeley issues the I-20 form (usually within four to six weeks of accepting the admission offer). Applicants pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of $350 (₹33,075), complete the DS-160 online, pay the visa application fee of $185 (₹17,483), and book a visa interview at a US Consulate in India — Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad. Interview slots for the summer intake fill fastest, so applicants should book within a week of receiving the I-20.
Financial documentation at the interview must cover the first year’s cost of attendance — a bank statement or education loan sanction letter typically covering around $85,000 (₹80.33 Lakhs) is expected for undergraduates. Full guidance on documentation and interview questions is available in the US student visa guide.
2026 update: The US Department of State has been running interview appointments faster than in 2024 and 2025 — most Bengaluru and Hyderabad applicants report wait times under 30 days, but plan for a 60-day buffer.
Tips and Application Checklist for University of California, Berkeley
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Berkeley over the last three cycles. Use them alongside the section-specific guidance above.
- Book IELTS or TOEFL 90 days early. Score reports take 10 to 14 days to reach Berkeley, and a delayed report can invalidate an on-time application.
- Draft PIQs across 6 to 8 weeks. The four Personal Insight Questions carry the heaviest UG weight — start by end of September 2026 for the November 30 deadline.
- Request transcripts by October 2026. Indian universities often take three to four weeks to issue sealed transcripts, and last-minute requests routinely miss deadlines.
- Line up LORs early. Confirm three graduate LOR writers by mid-October 2026 and share your SOP draft with each recommender.
- Verify department-specific deadlines. Graduate deadlines range from 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 — the earliest date, not the latest, is what matters.
- Prepare the I-20 financial file in advance. Bank statements, education loan letters, or sponsor affidavits should be dated within three months of the visa interview.
- Do not skip the UC-specific application. The UC Application is separate from the Common Application — Berkeley will not receive a Common App submission.
- Track scholarship deadlines. Many need-based awards close alongside the November 30 UG deadline, not after admission.
Berkeley admissions reward specificity — a Personal Insight essay that names a course, a professor, or a research lab consistently outperforms a generic pitch, and the same discipline pays off in graduate SOPs.
University of California, Berkeley Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the minimum IELTS score for UC Berkeley?
Ans. Undergraduates need IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90. Graduate applicants need IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 90. Some departments set higher floors, so verify per program.
Ques. Does UC Berkeley require the SAT or ACT for Indian applicants?
Ans. No. Berkeley is test-blind — SAT and ACT scores are not accepted or considered in the review, even if submitted. Class XII marks and the four Personal Insight Questions carry the UG decision.
Ques. When should I submit my UC Berkeley application for Fall 2027?
Ans. Undergraduate applications close on 30 November 2026. Graduate deadlines range from 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 depending on program. Berkeley does not offer rolling admission, and there is no advantage to submitting early.
Ques. What is the UC Berkeley acceptance rate for Indian students?
Ans. Berkeley’s overall acceptance rate is around 11.4 percent. The university does not publish a separate figure for Indian applicants, but the international admit rate is estimated at 5 to 8 percent based on non-resident quota patterns.
Ques. Do I need to pay the application fee for each UC campus separately?
Ans. Yes. The $95 (₹8,978) UG application fee is charged per UC campus selected, though you fill in only one UC Application. Graduate applications are paid separately at $155 (₹14,648) per Berkeley program.
Ques. Can I apply to multiple UC campuses in a single application?
Ans. Yes, at the undergraduate level. The UC Application lets you select and pay for as many of the nine UC campuses as you wish in one submission. Graduate applications are program-specific and cannot be shared across campuses.
Ques. What GPA do I need for UC Berkeley graduate school?
Ans. The Graduate Division sets a minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA (roughly 60 percent Indian marking or a first class). Competitive programs like EECS, CS, and MBA see admits closer to a 3.7 GPA or a first-class-with-distinction.
Ques. Does UC Berkeley offer an English test waiver for Indian students?
Ans. Undergraduates who complete three or more years of Language of Instruction in English qualify — this covers most CBSE, ICSE, and international-board students. Graduate applicants generally do not qualify for the waiver on an Indian degree alone, so plan to submit IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90.
Ques. What is the application fee for international students at Berkeley?
Ans. The application fee is $95 (₹8,978) per UC campus for undergraduates and $155 (₹14,648) per program for graduate applicants. Haas MBA charges $200 (₹18,900). Fees are non-refundable.
Ques. When will UC Berkeley release admission decisions for Fall 2027?
Ans. Undergraduate decisions are released by end of March 2027, with a Statement of Intent to Register due by 1 May 2027. Graduate decisions arrive on a program-specific timeline between February and April 2027.
Ques. Do I need a US visa to study at UC Berkeley?
Ans. Yes. Indian students need an F-1 student visa. Berkeley issues the I-20 after you accept the admission offer, and the F-1 process (SEVIS fee, DS-160, visa interview at a US Consulate) typically takes 30 to 60 days from I-20 receipt to visa stamp.

The University of California is one of the best universities in the world and also quite popular for its study programmes and the campus . The admission process is hard and can be confusing sometime but if you have good knowledge and have talked to any student of this college earler then you will not find any problem. Firstly you have to give the GMAT exam in which you have to score more than 720 marks out of 800 to get a seat there and then have to apply for admission online. You can apply for admission online yet you have any problem than instead of visiting any consultant you must go and talk to a alumni of the college.

UC Berkeley is ranked extremely highly. They have a great engineering program as well as Nuclear Engineering. The location was amazing in terms of weather as well as prospective internships in silicon valley. It also had many great programs so that I could take more classes, and as such I am minoring in Environmental Policy and Economics. Academics can be challenging as you are surrounded by some of the brightest people. However, studying hard as well as rounding yourself off as a person can be very easy if you put your mind to it. The university offers every chance possible to do so

I got into Cornell as well but I chose Berkeley because I wanted to be near a city and in warmer weather and a school which is more fun. I chose to major in Econ because Berkeley has very highly acclaimed economics professors. I have also taken many legal studies classes because Berkeley has a culture and history of activism and I really liked all the professors.

The reason I chose this particular college is that the location of this university is Ideal and ideal programs were provided for my major, ideally, I also admired the chill atmosphere of UC Berkley and indeed am proud of my decision.
Overview
I chose UC Berkeley because of its location and ideal temperature. It is one of the more distinguished schools and more students are accepted into Medical school when applying with UC Berkeley as your alma mater.
Scholarship
I am basically getting a full ride to attend the school, both from financial aid given by the school, and government help. I have a few outside scholarships of around $1000 each. And I also receive help from disability programs at my school.
Overview
I chose this particular college for many reasons. I would say that I mainly chose because I liked the weather in California and because and I felt it would be in a good state and city where I could further develop my dreams and goals.
Overview
I thought I would get the best education here because of its ranking and faculty. I also liked the variety of classes offered and the social climate. There was a good selection of different organizations I would be able to join.
Overview
The English program is ranked very high and I was accepted. I received higher financial aid here than my other top choice, and the school has a great reputation. The housing is expensive, but if you look hard it won't break the bank. Professors have great reputations as well, great for letters of recommendation.
Scholarship
I accepted the blue and gold opportunity plan (or something like that) which covered tuition and fees and gave a small housing stipend (think a month and a half). Sometime the financial aid will release late, but I did always get the money.
