UC Berkeley Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Berkeley combines academic thresholds with English-language proof. Berkeley is test-blind for undergraduate admission, meaning SAT and ACT scores are neither accepted nor considered. UG review focuses on the transcript, essays, and activities record instead.

UC Berkeley UG Eligibility Floor

  • Class XII academics: a Class XII record around 85 percent in a UC-approved pattern covering English, Math, Lab Science, Social Science, and a foreign language.
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo English Test 115.
  • Standardised tests: SAT and ACT are not accepted; do not send scores.

What Do PG Applicants Need at UC Berkeley?

  • Bachelor’s degree: a four-year Bachelor’s from a recognised university at a minimum 3.0 GPA (around 60 percent Indian marking; competitive departments expect 75 percent or higher).
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 7.0 overall.
  • Standardised tests: GRE or GMAT expectations vary by department, and Haas requires GMAT or GRE for the full-time MBA.

UC Berkeley IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Undergraduate applicants can request a waiver if their Language of Instruction (LOI) has been English for three or more years. CBSE, ICSE, and most IB schools in India satisfy this pathway, so many Class XII graduates avoid TOEFL or IELTS entirely. Postgraduate waivers apply only if the Bachelor’s is from an English-speaking country’s institution or from a US-accredited university, so most Indian PG applicants still submit an English score.

UC Berkeley PG Programs and English Score Minimums

Berkeley’s PG catalogue spans engineering, business, information science, public policy, and public health. Non-resident base tuition for a graduate Master’s programme in 2026-27 is USD 41,175 (around INR 39.19 Lakhs) per year, with programme-specific fees layered on top — see the course-wise fees breakdown for department detail.

UC Berkeley UG Programs for Indian Applicants

Undergraduate admission at Berkeley is divided across the College of Letters and Science, the College of Engineering, the Haas School of Business (undergraduate), the College of Environmental Design, and other units. Non-resident base tuition for UG in 2026-27 is USD 63,050 (around INR 60.02 Lakhs) per year.

Undergraduate applicants complete four Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) of 350 words each, plus a UC-approved coursework pattern. Berkeley reviews holistically — the essays and academic breadth carry as much weight as the raw percentage.

Berkeley Haas MBA Admission Requirements

The Haas School of Business runs three MBA programmes, each with its own admissions team and requirements. Applications route through Haas’s own portal, not the general Berkeley Graduate Application.

  • Full-Time MBA: two-year residential programme, GMAT or GRE required, essays plus interview after shortlist, typically 3 to 6 years of full-time work experience.
  • Evening and Weekend MBA: a three-year part-time programme for Bay Area professionals; not designed for candidates on student visas.
  • Berkeley MBA for Executives (EMBA): a 19-month executive format aimed at senior professionals with roughly 10 years of experience.

Insider note: Indian full-time MBA admits at Haas typically show 4 to 6 years of experience, GMAT scores in the 720+ band, and a defining career narrative. The essays are short but decisive.

Haas publishes multiple application rounds each admissions cycle, with strong Indian-applicant traction in the earliest round. Confirm the exact dates and fees on the Haas MBA admissions site before drafting essays.

UC Berkeley PhD Admission Process

PhD applications go through the same Berkeley Graduate Application as Master’s programmes, with a base non-resident tuition of USD 41,237 (around INR 39.25 Lakhs) per year — though most doctoral admits are supported by department funding.

UC Berkeley PhD Application Components

  • Research statement: a focused statement naming the research area, methods, and 2 to 3 faculty whose interests align.
  • Three letters of recommendation: at least two from research advisors or thesis mentors familiar with your academic work.
  • Transcripts and CV: full academic transcripts plus a research-focused CV listing publications, conferences, and posters.
  • GRE: requirement varies by department; STEM programmes have largely moved to test-optional.

UC Berkeley PhD Funding for Indian Students

Most Berkeley PhD offers include a multi-year funding package covering full tuition, a stipend, and health insurance through the Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan. Package amounts vary by department, so read the target programme’s funding page carefully — additional external and internal awards are worth exploring alongside the offer.

UC Berkeley Application Process Step by Step

The undergraduate and graduate paths share a similar structure but use different portals. Both are online-only, with supporting documents uploaded through the same platform.

  1. Create the account: UG applicants register on the UC Application (open from 1 August 2026); PG applicants register on Berkeley’s Graduate Application from 24 September 2026.
  2. Pay the application fee: UG pays a USD 95 (around INR 9,042) application fee; PG pays USD 155 (around INR 14,753) per programme.
  3. Complete the application: UG applicants answer four Personal Insight Questions of 350 words each; PG applicants submit a Statement of Purpose, Personal History Statement, and CV.
  4. Upload transcripts: unofficial transcripts at the application stage; certified official transcripts follow after an offer.
  5. Send English scores: TOEFL or IELTS scores are reported to Berkeley by the testing agency directly.
  6. Track your portal: Berkeley communicates decision status through the applicant portal, with Undergraduate decisions arriving end of March 2027 and PG decisions arriving programme-by-programme through February and March.

UC Berkeley Admission Decisions Timeline

Undergraduate admits confirm their seat by filing the Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) by 1 May 2027, which locks in the Fall 2027 slot with a non-refundable deposit. Deferrals are not routinely granted at UG level — plan to enrol in the cycle you win.

Planning note: PG offers occasionally arrive with a shorter reply window (10 to 15 days). If a US consulate visa slot is a bottleneck, book the F-1 interview as soon as the offer letter and I-20 arrive.

UC Berkeley Documents Required for Indian Students

Berkeley expects a consistent applicant file across UG and PG, though the exact paperwork mix shifts with the level and programme. Prepare each document early so scanning, apostilles, and courier time do not eat into the review window.

  • Valid passport: the biodata page scan, with the passport valid for at least six months beyond intended entry.
  • Academic transcripts: Class X, XII, and Bachelor’s (for PG) transcripts, uploaded at application and certified after offer.
  • Degree certificates: provisional or final degree certificate for PG applicants.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): department-specific SOP for PG; PIQs replace SOP for UG.
  • Letters of Recommendation: two academic and one professional LOR for most PG programmes.
  • CV or resume: tailored to research or industry track as appropriate.
  • English test score report: TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo (UG only) reported directly to Berkeley by the agency.
  • Financial documentation: bank statements and affidavit of support for the I-20 issuance after offer.
  • Passport-size photograph: in the required specifications for the eventual I-20 and visa.

UC Berkeley Acceptance Rate for International Students

Berkeley’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate for 2025-26 sat at around 11.4 percent. The university does not publish a separate international-student rate, but international admits are consistently estimated at 5 to 8 percent based on competitive-intake patterns.

What Drives the Berkeley Acceptance Rate?

Applicant volume is the main driver — Berkeley receives well over 120,000 undergraduate applications each cycle. Selectivity in the College of Engineering and EECS is markedly higher than in the College of Letters and Science, and Haas Junior-entry admission is more competitive still.

How Indian Applicants Fare at Berkeley

Indian students on campus totalled 779 in 2025, the majority at PG level, with EECS, MEng, and MIDS drawing the biggest cohorts. Berkeley sits in a strong ranking band across QS, THE, and ARWU — the applicant pool that clears the essay bar and the academic bar is small even before the international sub-slice is drawn.

Reality check: a 3.5 GPA and IELTS 7.5 do not, by themselves, win a Berkeley offer. The essays, faculty match (for PG), and academic depth in the target field carry the weight in the final read.

USA Student Visa Process for F-1 Applicants

Indian admits enrol on the F-1 student visa, issued only after the university sends a Form I-20 following a paid seat deposit. The visa process begins with an I-20 and ends with an interview at a US consulate in India.

Applicants pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,313), complete Form DS-160, pay the visa application fee of USD 185 (around INR 17,608), and book a consulate slot in Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, or Kolkata. The interview focuses on academic intent, funding, and post-graduation plans — carry the I-20, admission letter, financial evidence, transcripts, and DS-160 confirmation.

2026 update: US consulates in India see peak F-1 demand from April through July for Fall intakes. Slots open in waves — book within 48 hours of the I-20 arriving.

UC Berkeley Admissions Tips and Application Checklist

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UC Berkeley. Read them alongside the section-specific guidance above.

  • Start UC essays in July: the four PIQs of 350 words each drive UG selection at Berkeley — draft in July, not in November.
  • Book IELTS by August 2026: a retake window before the November UG deadline avoids a rushed second sitting under exam pressure.
  • Request transcripts eight weeks before deadline: Indian boards often lag on sealed originals sent overseas.
  • Contact PG faculty by October: the strongest Berkeley grad applications name a faculty match — cold emails work best six to eight weeks before deadlines.
  • Line up LOR writers by September: aim for two academic and one professional reference; give each recommender the SOP draft plus a resume.
  • Apply for funding within the same window: Berkeley’s PG scholarships close alongside programme deadlines — explore funding options for Indian students before you submit.
  • File the SIR by 1 May 2027: UG admits confirm by paying the Statement of Intent to Register deposit — miss it and the seat lapses.
  • Book the F-1 visa slot by June 2027: peak demand hits Indian consulates from April onward for Fall intakes.

Berkeley admissions reward depth, essays, and academic breadth over test scores. Time the UC Application from August, the PIQs from July, and the F-1 visa slot from May 2027 — that timing is what separates a strong Indian file from a stalled one.

Overview

The University of California is one of the best universities in the world and also quite popular for its study programmes and the campus . The admission process is hard and can be confusing sometime but if you have good knowledge and have talked to any student of this college earler then you will not find any problem. Firstly you have to give the GMAT exam in which you have to score more than 720 marks out of 800 to get a seat there and then have to apply for admission online. You can apply for admission online yet you have any problem than instead of visiting any consultant you must go and talk to a alumni of the college.

Overview

UC Berkeley is ranked extremely highly. They have a great engineering program as well as Nuclear Engineering. The location was amazing in terms of weather as well as prospective internships in silicon valley. It also had many great programs so that I could take more classes, and as such I am minoring in Environmental Policy and Economics. Academics can be challenging as you are surrounded by some of the brightest people. However, studying hard as well as rounding yourself off as a person can be very easy if you put your mind to it. The university offers every chance possible to do so

I got into Cornell as well but I chose Berkeley because I wanted to be near a city and in warmer weather and a school which is more fun. I chose to major in Econ because Berkeley has very highly acclaimed economics professors. I have also taken many legal studies classes because Berkeley has a culture and history of activism and I really liked all the professors.

Overview

I chose UC Berkeley because of its location and ideal temperature. It is one of the more distinguished schools and more students are accepted into Medical school when applying with UC Berkeley as your alma mater.

Scholarship

I am basically getting a full ride to attend the school, both from financial aid given by the school, and government help. I have a few outside scholarships of around $1000 each. And I also receive help from disability programs at my school.

Overview

The English program is ranked very high and I was accepted. I received higher financial aid here than my other top choice, and the school has a great reputation. The housing is expensive, but if you look hard it won't break the bank. Professors have great reputations as well, great for letters of recommendation.

Scholarship

I accepted the blue and gold opportunity plan (or something like that) which covered tuition and fees and gave a small housing stipend (think a month and a half). Sometime the financial aid will release late, but I did always get the money.
