SPJIMR Mumbai does not pick PGDM students on CAT score alone. Shortlisted students attend a selection day with four stages: a psychometric test, a Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Interview 1 (GI-1) and Group Interview 2 (GI-2). Here is how each stage works, based on past candidates' experiences.

SPJIMR interview questions run across two group interview rounds. Group Interview 1 covers the profile, academics, work experience and chosen specialisation. Group Interview 2 turns to ethics, values and personality.

The institute does not run a one-on-one personal interview. A Writing Ability Test sits alongside the rounds on the selection day. Only candidates cleared in GI-1 are called for GI-2.

Around 5 to 6 candidates face one panel together. Panels carry 2 to 3 members. These include faculty from different specialisations and, at times, alumni.

Interviews for the 2027-29 batch run in January and February 2027. Applications close on November 27, 2026 on pgdmadmissions.spjimr.org. Final selection mixes the profile, academic record, entrance score and interview performance.

SPJIMR Interview Process 2027: Rounds, Format and Duration

A group interview places several applicants before one panel at the same time. Each candidate answers separately, but everyone hears every answer. The table below sets out the three stages of a SPJIMR selection day.

Stage What It Covers Format
Writing Ability Test One essay on a social or business theme Written, before the interview rounds
Group Interview 1 Profile, academics, work experience, specialisation 5 to 6 candidates, one panel
Group Interview 2 Ethics, values, personality, perception Smaller group of cleared candidates

GI-1 is the elimination round. Students report that each round runs roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Panel members rotate questions across the group rather than finishing one candidate at a time.

Indian applicants attend the rounds offline. International applicants are interviewed online, as per the official PGDM FAQ page. A confirmed interview slot cannot be changed later.

Group Interview 1 Questions Asked at SPJIMR

GI-1 tests depth in the specialisation named in the application form. Openers are common to the whole group. Domain questions then split by each candidate's background.

Questions reported by past candidates in the opening minutes include:

  • A self-introduction that closes with the reason for an MBA.
  • One thing about the candidate that the CV does not show.
  • Why this specialisation was picked over the other three.
  • What a recent project or role added for the client.
  • Views on one current business story of the week.

Finance Questions

  • Finance panels push into concepts and then ask for an example. Reported questions cover the Phillips Curve and its real use. Others include the Black-Scholes model and the gap between derivatives and options.
  • Candidates have also faced questions on fundamental versus technical analysis. Panels asked how cost of equity is built and what beta measures. Working capital questions covered the cash conversion cycle, payable days and inventory days.
  • Business awareness questions in finance panels have included the HDFC and HDFC Bank merger. Others asked what a unicorn start-up is. One panel asked why investors keep funding loss-making start-ups.

Marketing Questions

  • Why a shift to marketing from the current job role.
  • One digital campaign the candidate rates highly, and the reason.
  • How water would be marketed to a saturated audience.
  • What a brand actually is, in plain words.

Operations and Supply Chain Questions

  • Why operations after an engineering degree.
  • Where a hotel supply chain could be improved.
  • How a past project cut cost or cycle time.
  • A hobby on the form, probed in detail.

Information Management and Analytics Questions

  • What big data means and where it helps operations.
  • How code quality is judged on a live project.
  • Where AI tools fit into the candidate's current work.
  • Questions drawn from any research paper listed on the form.

Example: A candidate who lists transfer pricing work should open with a one-line definition. Then name the client, the country pair and the outcome. SPJIMR panels reward the example more than the textbook line.

Group Interview 2 Questions on Ethics and Values

GI-2 reads less like an interview and more like a discussion. There is rarely a correct answer. Panels look at how a candidate reasons through a grey situation.

Situational and values questions reported from past rounds include:

  • A roommate is using drugs. Reporting it could get them suspended.
  • The same roommate's father is a senior police officer and issues a threat.
  • Whether the mentor or the mentee drives more of the growth.
  • A public figure's viral stunt: social activism or publicity.
  • Whether economic background shapes identity across classes.
  • How FOMO would be handled on a competitive campus.
  • How the campus felt from the morning's visit.

Example: On the roommate dilemma, a flat answer of reporting or hiding scores poorly. A stronger reply names the people affected first. It then explains the step taken, the risk accepted and the reason behind it.

SPJIMR WAT Topics from Past Years

The essay comes before the interview rounds. Word limits reported by candidates have ranged from 300 to 500 words. Topics stay opinion-led rather than factual.

  • Technology is making people lonely.
  • Full-time work from home as a permanent policy.
  • The biggest cultural shock faced in India or abroad.
  • Privatisation of nationalised banks.
  • Mental health support at the workplace.
  • Women's education and national development.
  • A brand tagline that stayed with the writer.

What Students Report About the SPJIMR Interview Experience?

GI-1 Is the Real Filter

Students describe GI-1 as the round that decides the outcome. Accounts often note that only a small share of each group moves to GI-2. One reported group of six sent two candidates ahead.

Panels Test Listening, Not Only Answers

Students consistently report that panels reuse answers across the group. A question given to one candidate is thrown to the next for comment. Candidates who tune out while others speak get caught.

The Tone Stays Calm

Students describe the panels as polite and unhurried. Stress interviews are not the pattern here. Accounts suggest that honest, unpolished answers land better than rehearsed ones.

Who Gets a Profile-Based Interview Call?

SPJIMR scores the application form before it scores the exam. Applicants are sorted into two shortlists. This decides when the interview call arrives.

Call Type Shortlisting Basis
Profile-based Application profile, scored ahead of entrance results
Profile-cum-score-based Profile read together with the CAT or GMAT percentile

The qualifying bar for Indian applicants is 85 percentile overall in CAT. Each section needs 75 percentile. GMAT carries the same overall and sectional structure.

Profile scoring reads the Class 10, Class 12 and graduation record year by year. Work experience counts when it links to the chosen specialisation. The achievements section is read for scale, not for length.

SPJIMR Psychometric Test

This test checks how you see yourself. You get 15 to 20 statements split into two sections. For each one, you mark how often it applies to you, on a scale from "never" to "always". You then explain your answer for three statements from each section, with a real example.

Statements reported by past candidates include:

  • Do you ever lie?
  • Has luck played a role in your life?
  • Do you show your emotions openly?

The panel may bring up these answers in GI-2. One candidate wrote that he hates lying. The panel then asked him how a marketing manager can sell a product without ever lying.

Key insight: Answer honestly, not "perfectly". If your answers look too ideal, the panel will test them, and you must defend each one with a real example from your life.

How to Prepare for the SPJIMR Group Interview?

Preparation splits cleanly between the two rounds. GI-1 rewards subject depth. GI-2 rewards self-awareness.

  • Every line written in the application form can become a question.
  • Concepts in the chosen specialisation need a crisp definition plus one example.
  • Two or three business stories from the last quarter are usually enough.
  • A worked ethical dilemma from the candidate's own life helps in GI-2.
  • Listening to other candidates matters as much as speaking.

How SPJIMR Makes the Final Decision?

The final merit list combines these factors:

  • Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks
  • Work experience linked to your chosen specialisation
  • CAT or GMAT score, used only to clear the cutoff
  • Achievements in sports, culture, leadership or social work
  • Performance in GI-1 and GI-2

SPJIMR has no management quota. Read the full SPJIMR admission process for eligibility, fees and application steps.
