If SPJIMR does not shortlist you for your first area, it checks you for the second one.

SPJIMR Admission FAQs

Short answers to what students ask before they apply.

Can I send the SPJIMR form before my CAT result is out?▾
Yes. Type your CAT registration number correctly and submit the form by 27 Nov 2026. SPJIMR opens the form again after the result so you can add your score.
Does SPJIMR accept XAT or NMAT for the PGDM?▾
No. For the PGDM and PGDM (BM), SPJIMR takes only CAT 2026 or GMAT. If you plan to use another test, it will not count here.
Can I use my CAT 2025 score for the 2027 batch?▾
No. SPJIMR takes only the CAT held in the year you apply. For the 2027-29 batch, that is CAT 2026.
Is an online GMAT score accepted?▾
No. SPJIMR takes only a GMAT you sat at a test centre. If you are shortlisted, send the official score through GMAC.
Which GMAT code do I use to send my score?▾
Search for the SPJIMR programme name on the GMAC site when you send scores. For the PGDM (BM), the code is 6DQ-MJ-68. Check the PGDM name carefully before you click send.
What happens if I am not picked for my first PGDM area?▾
SPJIMR then checks you for your second area. The result of one area does not change the other, so pick both with care.
Can I change my PGDM area after I join?▾
You can ask at the end of the first year. A faculty panel decides, based on your marks and merit. Do not count on a change, so choose well at the start.
My university gives CGPA. How do I show percentage?▾
Use your university's conversion rule and keep its letter ready. If there is no rule, SPJIMR multiplies a 10 point CGPA by 10. You show the letter at the paper check.
Does an internship or articleship count as work experience?▾
No. SPJIMR does not count internships, training or articleship that were part of your course. Unpaid work does not count either, so list only paid jobs after your degree.
I run my own business. How do I prove my work?▾
Keep your company registration papers and proof of income from the business ready. SPJIMR asks for both before it counts the work.
Can I change my interview slot later?▾
No. Once you confirm a slot, it stays fixed. Pick a date you are sure about, and plan travel to the city early.
Are PGDM interviews held online?▾
No, not for Indian students. You go in person to Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru or Delhi. Only international students get an online interview.
Can I defer my SPJIMR offer to next year?▾
No. SPJIMR does not allow you to move an offer to a later year. If you cannot join, you must apply again.
Can I keep another full time course while I join SPJIMR?▾
No. You cannot be in another full time programme during the PGDM. If you leave another course for SPJIMR, tell SPJIMR in writing.
I am an NRI. Which seat do I apply for?▾
You apply like an Indian student. SPJIMR treats NRI forms the same as Indian forms, not under the 36 extra seats.
Is living in the hostel a must?▾
Yes. The PGDM, PGDM (BM) and PGPM are fully residential. You must live on campus, and there is no separate housing for married students.
Will I get a degree or a diploma from SPJIMR?▾
You get a diploma, because SPJIMR is not a university. AICTE approves it, so you can use it for jobs and for higher study like an MBA.
Who can join the PGPM Restart plan?▾
Women with three years of full time work and a career break of at least two years can join. You also need a degree with 50% and a GMAT or CAT score.
Do I need a resume or reference letters for the PGPM?▾

SPJIMR: 12 Answered Questions

How does the CV of students who get selected in IIMs(any), ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJIMR, JBIMS look like?

Aparna Das
Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

This might seem like a shallow statement but when you look at an average student from a top-tier college and an average student from a lower-tier college the difference that you witness would not surprise you if you just look at their CVs.

It’s not as if they have done something exceptionally great but the CVs of students who get selected in top management schools like top IIMs, ISB, XLRI, FMS, SPJMR, and JBIMS are highly analytical. They know how to quantify their achievements and in the end, that’s all that matters. It’s all just numbers and data.

Typically, the students have impressive academic records and have been part of numerous non-academic avenues that have helped them in understanding the importance of extra-curriculum activities.

Some might have told you that most of the students who go to these top colleges have work experience but that is not true. You do not require work experience to get into your dream college. If you’re looking to get into one of these top management colleges and do not have an exceptional profile, just start focusing on your speed and accuracy for the written examination and polish your CV. Highlight the things that have impacted you and that you think would help you in becoming a better manager in the future.

How difficult is it to get into SPJIMR, Mumbai?

Trisha SomwanshiStudied at SPJIMR

SPJIMR, a leading MBA college, offers specializations in Marketing, Finance, Operations, and Information Management. As part of the application process, you'll need to select two specializations that align with your relevant work experience.

To gain admission to SPJIMR, Mumbai, there are two selection methods available. The first is profile-based calls, where your profile is reviewed, and you may receive a call based on your academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, work experience, and other relevant factors. To qualify for a call, you'll need to have a minimum overall percentile of 85 and a sectional percentile of 70. Alternatively, you can qualify for a call based on your GMAT score, provided it is 680+.

The second selection method is the autonomous process. This involves accepting CAT/XAT and GMAT scores, after which students are invited for GDPI WAT before final selection.

What is the admission process of SPJIMR, Mumbai?

Ayan Dey
Devendra SinghStudied at SPJIMR

SPJIMR has a unique approach to candidate selection, where calls are given based on the applicant's overall profile, including past academic scores, extracurricular activities, leadership skills, and other factors. More than merely achieving a certain percentile is required to guarantee admission, and even candidates with 99+ percentiles can be rejected. Shortlisting is based on evaluating profiles, and applicants are sorted into two groups: Profile-based and Profile-cum-Score-based.

Candidates are then evaluated on various factors, such as academic background, work experience, entrance scores, versatility, and achievements, to determine their suitability for admission.

After the initial shortlisting, applicants must fill out a more descriptive form. To avoid scheduling conflicts with other business school interviews, it is recommended that applicants take advantage of this opportunity and attend the interview.

The selection process involves a psychometric test, a group interview 1 focusing on academic qualifications, work experience, and extracurricular activities, and a group interview 2 assessing candidates' values and ethics. Honesty and confidence are crucial for success, as any attempt to fake it will likely be detected.

What do I have to do to get a call from SP Jain or XIMB?

Veda Burman
Manu JhaPGDRM, PRM38 from Institute of Rural Management, Anand

My answer will be strictly pertaining to SP Jain as my sister is a student there and I have quite a lot of information about the admission criteria there. SP Jain has unique criteria wherein almost 70% of the parameters are uncontrollable. Some of them include

  • Past Academic Record
  • Nature of work experience and employee brand value
  • Extracurricular background
  • Diversity of profile

These are some factors that are hardly in one’s control. So one should not be disappointed if she/he lacks in these aspects. Well, it is now that the factors that are controllable come into the picture. You can work on these factors and compensate for the flaws in your profile

  • Prepare for CAT/XAT/GMAT to the best of your ability.
  • Filling out the application form with a genuine portrayal of your personality and candidature in the fields where you are asked about your versatility, leadership quality etc.

If the stars align, you will surely get a call. From what I have heard, every PGDM batch has students with both exception profiles as well as normal profiles. So what you need to focus on is finding a unique trait of yourself and working on it relentlessly.

Can someone share his/her interview experience at SPJIMR on score-based calls?

Gauri KapoorLives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (1993–present)

If you are preparing for an interview at SPJIMR, here is what you can expect based on a student's experience.

First, you need to choose your specialization beforehand while filling out the application form. Once you receive a profile-based call, you will be shortlisted and interviewed on the basis of your chosen specialization.

On the day of the interview, make sure to reach the venue 90 minutes prior to the scheduled interview time. The admissions committee member will verify all the documents which were uploaded to the portal and will ask you to submit a photocopy of the same.

You will then be taken to another classroom for the psychometric test and WAT. The psychometric test will revolve around questions testing your morals and ethics, and you will have to choose among Strongly agree, Agree, Neutral, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree. You will also have to elaborate on the same by choosing any 3 among the 10 questions from each group. The WAT will ask you to write on a given topic within a time limit of 30 minutes.

After the written test, you will be taken for the group interview. Groups of 6 will be taken to their respective panels. You will be asked to introduce yourself, and the panelists will question you based on your specialization. Be prepared to answer questions related to your work profile and operations. You will also be asked to speak on a topic related to your specialization.

If you qualify for Group Interview 2, you will be asked questions that test your personality and character. You will also be asked to talk about a "Wow" moment in your life and something deep you have learned from your parents.

Remember, the interview process is an elimination round, so make sure to prepare well and be confident in your answers.

Is it possible to get into SPJIMR if there have been backs during graduation?

Deepak TiwariPGPM in Information Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) (Graduated 2016

This answer is based on the interview experience of a close friend who had backs during graduation. When enquired about the same, she told them that she has a good percentile despite that. The panelists contradicted her saying the other candidates also have an excellent percentile and academic background. They asked why should a person with a back be preferred over them. My friend told them she even had an extracurricular background and an overall good profile. Yet again the panelists were not convinced. She further said that it was her talent for never giving up that set her apart from others. The panelists told her she couldn’t make it because of her backlog and she easily gave up and left.

The conclusions I drew from this interview were

  • My friend, despite claiming that she never gives up easily, gave up once she was cornered. So don’t give up till the end
  • Prepare a justifiable statement to support your claim and be confident while delivering it
  • Have something exceptional up your sleeve to overshadow the backs in your records
  • Don’t just blabber and sound as genuine as you can.
  • Take up a specific skill and ace it so well that all your past drawbacks can be covered through it.

So it’s eventually your luck and your confidence that will decide if having a back will hinder your path to success or not.

What are the chances of a score-based call from SPJIMR?

Sneha NagarajuMBA Finance, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (2020)

My friend has got both a profile-based and a score-based call. He had to choose between IIM Indore and SPJIMR so he eventually went for the SPJIMR. IIM Indore alumni told him about the issues the students face during placements owing to the huge batch size. The recruiters offer the best packages to the top students and the rest of the batch ends up with average packages. This made him choose SPJIMR.

As he went for the interview, he soon realized that the other candidates had scores much better than his (97+). This disheartened him with the lowest score (96 something). He knew clearly he had zero chances and left right after the first round. He further said that the campus wasn’t that appealing and IIM Indore and FMS seemed to have better infrastructure. So the bottom line is the chances of getting a score-based call from SPJIMR are very low.

Why do people flock to IIM Lucknow and leave SPJIMR and FMS, when IIML teaches management like engineering whereas SPJIMR and FMS have a more conducive environment to actually learn? They also get the

Swati BiswasGMP International Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (2018)

By ‘teaches Management like Engineering’ I assume what you mean is Management studies at IIM Lucknow are more strict, mundane, and repetitive. In this regard, I refuse to accept your claim as the reality is far from this.

People graduating from these institutes are youngsters with an age group of 20-25 so there is very little impact of the institutes' pedagogy on the learner’s ability to learn. These candidates are likely to be more serious regarding their growth and even sacrifice the fun of a typical B School life just to reach new heights. Anyone with such a mindset is likely to fare well anywhere irrespective of the choice of Institute.

I am going to specifically pinpoint the scenario at FMS because there is a general conception that FMS has a relatively chilled ambiance. The truth is I have seen many students working tremendously hard in their 2 years. They explore much more than academics and take part in many extracurricular activities because they know it’s their last opportunity before they enter the corporate world. The attendance rules although stricter than that at IIM Lucknow are no direct indication of the general discipline and the rigor of the curriculum. Every institute has its own tailored learning environment and it’s up to the students to make the most out of it.

People just ‘flock’ to a particular B School because of the sheep mentality. Rather their decisions are based on continuous analysis of various factors like tags, peer group, intended specialization, placement opportunities, personal goals.

What is the objective of admitting freshers in Ivy B-Schools like IIMs, FMS, JBIMS, SIMSREE, SPJIMR, XLRI, etc.??

Sandeep BiswasGMP International Management, S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (2018)

MBA admission in Indian B Schools is a fairly weird process in comparison to that of foreign B Schools. In India, the admission process requires a candidate to have some work experience and in certain B-schools, it even carries a certain weightage. But during Final Placements, this scenario changes entirely as the recruiters prefer freshers over experienced candidates. The major reasons for this contrast are:

  • The recruiters offering Marketing roles are on the lookout for candidates who can initially go through a sales job for a few years. They believe that the route to Marketing is through sales only. Now Sales requires a lot of traveling that too to rural areas. The recruiters know that these tough job conditions cannot be undertaken by Experienced professionals and thus prefer freshers who they can mold easily.
  • The companies offering Finance roles know that the candidates with prior work experience won’t be working for the long hours they require them to. So they prefer freshers who can work long hours without complaining.

Recruiters are looking for candidates with work experience of not more than 11-12 months. Honestly, this strategy is illogical as a person with more work experience is bound to excel much better than a fresher, and restricting him from getting a job just because they cannot be exploited to the fullest extent is a bit cruel.

The scenario is pretty much the opposite in foreign countries that prefer MBA candidates with work experience only. This is because in India MBA is considered a way to become more employable or earn a fatter cheque. Whereas in the West, it is a means to upgrade your career and take it to new heights. The entire concept of MBA is at fault in India thereby this illogical strategy.

In my opinion, MBA candidates should have a work experience of at least 1 year, only then they can harness the MBA program to the fullest and not approach it just as a source of placements.

A
Ashish Ramtari

In SPIJMR, PGPM admissions follow the rolling interview process in which outstanding candidates receive an offer letter before the closing date of admissions. It facilitates smooth transition from a full time job to a full time management program.
