IIM Bangalore scores work experience on a fixed formula. The shortlist gives it 10 points out of 100. The score is 10 multiplied by months, then divided by 36.
Full marks need 36 months of eligible experience. But work experience does not help at the very first screen. That shortlist is drawn on CAT percentiles alone.
The same experience is scored again after the interview. The weight is scaled down from 10 to 5. A panel quality rating of 0.25 to 2 is then applied.
These rules come from the PGP 2026-28 admission procedure on iimb.ac.in.

How IIM Bangalore Scores Work Experience in the Shortlist?
The pre-PI work experience score runs on one formula. It is 10x/36 when experience is below 36 months. It becomes a flat 10 at 36 months or more.
Here x is the months of eligible experience. Months are counted up to a cut-off date fixed by the institute.
For the PGP 2026-28 batch, the count ran up to July 2025. Experience added after that date did not raise the score.
The table below shows the pre-PI score at common experience levels.
| Months of Work Experience | Pre-PI Work Experience Score (out of 10) |
|---|---|
| 0 | 0 |
| 6 | 1.67 |
| 12 | 3.33 |
| 18 | 5.00 |
| 24 | 6.67 |
| 30 | 8.33 |
| 36 or more | 10.00 |
Example: A candidate with 24 months scores 6.67 out of 10. A candidate with 12 months scores 3.33. The gap is about 3.3 points on a 100 point scale.

Where Work Experience Sits in the Pre-PI Score?
The pre-PI score is built only for candidates in the first shortlist. CAT is the heaviest component at 55 points. Academics take 30 points across the two boards and graduation.
Work experience and gender diversity split the rest. The weights change again once the interview is done.
| Component | Pre-PI Weight | Post-PI Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Interview | 0 | 40 |
| CAT | 55 | 25 |
| Written Ability Test (WAT) | 0 | 10 |
| Work experience or professional course | 10 | 10 |
| Class 10 board score | 10 | 5 |
| Class 12 board score | 10 | 5 |
| Bachelor's degree score | 10 | 5 |
| Gender diversity | 5 | 0 |
Gender diversity counts only at the pre-PI stage. The board, bachelor's and professional course scores are normalised.

What Counts as Work Experience at IIM Bangalore?
Only paid professional employment is counted. The institute names three things that are not counted at all.
- Time spent as an intern, during or after a programme of study
- Any period of apprenticeship, including articleship under a professional course
- Any unpaid work in an organisation or institution
So a chartered accountancy articleship adds no months. A six month internship before a full-time role adds nothing either. Only the paid full-time months enter the formula.
Documents Needed to Claim the Months
The application asks for proof of every month claimed. Three documents cover the work experience claim.
- Work experience letters from each employer
- The first payslip of the employment
- The last payslip of the employment
Two online reference letters are also compulsory for all applicants. IIM Bangalore prefers these from a current or past employer. Referees submit them directly, and no extension is given for them.
A false employment claim ends the application immediately. A 3 year ban on all IIM Bangalore programmes also applies.
CA, CS and ICWA Scored in Place of Work Experience
Professional qualifications use the same 10 point slot. Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting and Company Secretary qualifications are eligible. Only the final year completed score is counted, and it is normalised.
A candidate cannot collect both scores. IIM Bangalore takes the higher of the two.
Example: A chartered accountant has 12 months of paid work. That scores 3.33 on experience. A higher normalised professional course score replaces it.
How the Interview Panel Rescores Work Experience?
The duration score is only half the story. After the interview, the work experience weight drops from 10 to 5. Each panel member then rates the quality of the experience.
The scale has five values: 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2. The average of those ratings multiplies the scaled score. That product is the final work experience number.
| Panel Quality Rating | Score at 36 Months | Score at 18 Months |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 10.00 | 5.00 |
| 1.5 | 7.50 | 3.75 |
| 1 | 5.00 | 2.50 |
| 0.5 | 2.50 | 1.25 |
| 0.25 | 1.25 | 0.63 |
The swing is large. The same 36 months can be worth 10 points or 1.25 points. Duration sets the base, and the panel decides the multiplier.
Students report that panels probe role depth more than length. Two years with real ownership can read better than three routine years.
How Many Months Are Worth Targeting?
The score stops rising at 36 months. Nothing is lost past that point either. IIM Bangalore applies no penalty for longer experience.
Freshers are not blocked from the programme. The eligibility rule asks only for a bachelor's degree with 50% marks.
SC, ST and PwD candidates need 45%. A completed CA, CS, ICWA or FIAI degree also qualifies.
Example: Two candidates have identical CAT and board scores. One has 36 months of experience and the other has none. The pre-PI gap is 10 points, against 55 for CAT.
