IIT Bombay Admission 2027 follows two very different models. Undergraduate seats are filled by a central counselling body. Every postgraduate and doctoral programme is handled in-house by the institute.

All routes are entrance-based. IIT Bombay does not admit any student on Class 12 marks or graduation marks alone.

Admission Update:
  • M.Tech and PhD 2027-28: GATE 2027 registration is open. Last date is September 21, 2026.
  • MBA 2027-29: Apply through CAT 2026. CAT registration closes September 15, 2026.
  • B.Tech and B.Des 2027: The 2026 cycle has closed. UCEED 2027 exam is on January 17, 2027.
  • IIT Bombay offered around 1,360 undergraduate seats in the JoSAA seat matrix.
  • The M.Tech information brochure lists an intake of 938 students across departments.
  • There is no management quota, no NRI quota and no donation seat.
  • There is no domicile quota. All seats are filled on all-India merit.
  • Reservation follows central norms. 27% OBC-NCL, 15% SC, 7.5% ST and 10% EWS.
  • A further 5% horizontal reservation applies for PwD candidates.
  • Extra supernumerary seats are added for female candidates in every B.Tech programme.
  • B.Tech applicants need 75% in Class 12 or a top 20 percentile board rank. It is 65% for SC, ST and PwD.
  • A GATE score alone does not secure an M.Tech seat. Many departments add a written test or interview.

IIT Bombay is the most preferred IIT among top rankers. In 2025, 73 of the top 100 JEE Advanced rankers joined this campus. IIT Delhi took 19 and IIT Madras took 6.

Seat allotment is not done by the institute. It is done centrally by JoSAA using your JEE Advanced rank.

IIT Bombay B.Tech Admission Dates 2027

JEE Advanced 2027 is expected to be conducted by IIT Delhi. Official dates will be announced by the Joint Admission Board.

IIT Bombay B.Tech Eligibility Criteria 2027

Particulars Details
Qualifying exam Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Minimum marks 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile of the board
Relaxation 65% aggregate for SC, ST and PwD candidates
Entrance exam JEE Main 2027 followed by JEE Advanced 2027

IIT Bombay B.Tech Selection Criteria 2027

Selection is purely rank-driven. There is no interview, no board-marks weightage and no profile score.

  • First, qualify JEE Main and reach the JEE Advanced eligibility list.
  • Next, clear the subject-wise and aggregate cutoffs in JEE Advanced.
  • Then register on JoSAA and lock your branch and institute choices.
  • Seats are allotted round by round against your category rank.
  • Accept the seat by paying the seat acceptance fee within the round deadline.
  • Choose Freeze, Float or Slide after each allotment.
  • Report to the institute for document verification at the end.
  • CSAB special rounds do not cover IIT seats.

IIT Bombay Cutoff Highlights

  • Computer Science closed at rank 66 in the OPEN category, JoSAA 2025 Round 1.
  • The same branch opened at rank 1 that round.
  • Computer Science has stayed in the 60 to 70 rank band for three years.
  • Chemical Engineering closed at rank 2,405 in the OPEN category that round.
  • Category ranks are separate. OBC-NCL, SC and ST close far beyond the OPEN rank.
  • Female-only seats close at a higher rank than gender-neutral seats.
  • These are reference figures. Verify the 2027 ranks on the JoSAA portal.

Key insight: Freezing early is not always the safe move at IIT Bombay. Choosing Float keeps you in the queue for a better branch in later rounds. Withdrawal from an IIT seat is allowed only up to a fixed round, after which you are locked in for the year.

  • Cutoffs vary sharply by department and by specialisation within a department.

IIT Bombay MBA Selection Criteria 2027

  • Phase one shortlists on a composite score built mainly from the CAT score.
  • Past academic record and work experience add to that composite score.
  • You must clear both the overall and the sectional CAT cutoff.
  • The exact cutoffs are published on the school website after CAT results.
  • Phase two is a Personal Interview conducted online.
  • The final merit list combines the CAT score, the interview score and the candidate profile.
  • The interview carries weight close to that of the CAT score.
  • Government reservation norms apply to the final list.

How to Apply for IIT Bombay MBA 2027?

  • Register and appear for CAT 2026.
  • Check the cutoff notice published after the CAT result.
  • Fill the separate MBA application form on the school website.
  • Enter your Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks accurately.
  • Add your work experience with supporting proof.

IIT Bombay B.Tech vs IIT Delhi B.Tech vs IIT Madras B.Tech

All three admit through JEE Advanced and JoSAA. The real differences show up in cutoffs, in topper preference and in the design route.

Particulars IIT Bombay IIT Delhi IIT Madras

AI-Generated Summary based on 257 Reviews

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay offers a B.Tech program in Mechanical Engineering primarily through the JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations. Students aspiring to join must first qualify the JEE Main, conducted by NTA, which is held twice a year—in January and in April. Eligible candidates need to secure at least 75% in their 12th standard (65% for SC/ST) or rank in the top 20 percentile of their respective board exams.

Scoring well in JEE Main allows candidates to advance to the JEE Advanced, organized by IITs, usually occurring in May or June. JEE Advanced is considered one of India's toughest exams, focusing on deep conceptual understanding. Cutoffs for the Mechanical Engineering program typically range from JEE Advanced ranks between 493 and 1736 for general category students, though these may vary annually. Counselling for seat allocation is conducted online via the JoSAA platform.

Reservation policies are in place for categories such as OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwDs, and female students. Reserved category students benefit from lower cutoff ranks and reduced fees. For the application process, candidates need to monitor official websites for JEE Main and JEE Advanced for application availability, deadlines, and fees, which can vary each year. Admission procedures are efficiently managed online, ensuring a systematic process from application to seat allocation.

What can be done to crack the JEE (Advanced) and get into IIT-Bombay?

Aparna Das
Sumit BoseIIT Bombay (2019)

Don’t be fixed upon a certain agenda and keep your options open. If you will restrict yourself in such a way you might limit your options as well as the capacity to give your best.

Instead, I suggest that you try to analyze why exactly you want to pursue Engineering. Is it because of the sheep mentality or do you really want to build things?

Once you are sure, then figure out how exactly you will be achieving this goal. Set achievable goals for yourself and work sincerely on fulfilling them. Reward yourself for very little achievement on the way. This will gradually increase your confidence and pave the way to achieve much more.

However, a very important thing is to dream but not demand. That is you should be passionate about a certain thing but not fixated on it too much to the extent that if you fail to achieve it, you lose much more. So you can desire to pursue BTech in CSE at IIT Bombay but leave room for other options as well.

Don’t stress yourself out too much and just concentrate on the present, your future will be visible sooner or later.
