Marketing Questions by Topic

The functions of marketing are the most repeated topic. 19 questions name them, and the usual form is "Explain the following functions of marketing" with two or three functions listed, such as gathering and analysing market information, marketing planning, product designing and development, standardisation and grading, customer support services, transportation and storage. The pairs change from paper to paper, so all of the functions need to be ready.

About 18 questions are on promotion, covering advertising, personal selling, sales promotion and public relations, and about 12 are on physical distribution, whose components are order processing, transportation, warehousing and inventory control. 12 questions name branding or trademark, and 7 name packaging. About 10 questions are on the marketing management philosophies (production, product, selling and marketing concepts, and the societal concept), and about 9 are on the factors that affect price determination, such as product cost, utility and demand, extent of competition, pricing objectives, government regulation and marketing methods. The marketing mix is named in 7 questions, and channels of distribution in 4, mostly as MCQs. The counts come from keyword matches, so a question on two topics is counted under both.

TopicQuestions Naming It (approx.)
Functions of marketing19
Promotion mix: advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, public relations18
Physical distribution and its components12
Branding and trademark12
Marketing management philosophies10
Factors affecting price determination9

Channels of distribution4

The format is predictable. 22 questions begin "Explain the following", 14 ask for "any two", "any three", "any four" or "any five" points, and 4 of the 24 MCQs are built on two statements, where you pick the correct combination. 2 more MCQs are match-the-following.

How to Approach the Marketing Set

Do the 24 MCQs first, in about half an hour. Most are one-line applications: a gift box thrown away is secondary or primary packaging, a tiger symbol is a brand mark, free samples are a sales promotion tool, goods going from manufacturer to retailer to consumer is a one-level channel. Read the case stem for the one phrase that names the concept before you look at the options.

The 60 written answers are where the hours go. Start with the functions of marketing, since they turn up in 3-, 4- and 6-mark forms, then physical distribution, the promotion mix and the factors affecting price. For each answer, state the point, give one line of meaning, and add an example from the stem. For the case questions, quote the line from the paragraph that shows the concept instead of defining it in the abstract.

Common Mistakes in Marketing Questions

  • Mixing up the production concept and the selling concept; the first stresses availability and affordability, the second stresses aggressive selling.
  • Calling a brand mark a trademark. Only the part of the brand that has legal protection is a trademark.
  • Listing channels of distribution as levels without counting the manufacturer and the consumer correctly.
  • Writing transportation and warehousing as separate answers when the question asks for the components of physical distribution as a whole.
  • Giving pricing objectives and product cost as one factor.
  • Explaining three functions of marketing when the question asks for two.
  • Confusing advertising, which is a paid, non-personal form of communication, with publicity, which is not paid for.
