How will Collegedunia's Class 12 Physics Chapter-wise PYQs Help You?

In Class 12 Physics, spotting patterns helps more than anything new. The PYQ sets on this page show you which question types come back every year. They also show which derivations fill each Section of the paper.

  • 23-year coverage (2003 to 2026): every PYQ is linked to its source paper and carries a year tag, so you can spot trends in one glance.
  • Sorted by marks (1 to 5): from Section A (1-mark MCQ) to Section E (5-mark long answer). This matches the real CBSE 2026 paper, so your practice maps straight onto exam writing.
  • Per-chapter PDFs: 14 separate PDFs, one per chapter. Download only the chapters you need, not one heavy all-chapters file.
  • Repeating-question tags: questions asked in 3 or more years get a "high frequency" tag. CBSE often asks these again in a slightly changed form.
  • Easy cross-links: jump from any PYQ to the same chapter's Notes, NCERT Solutions, Formula Sheet, or Handwritten Notes in one click. This helps when a PYQ shows up a gap in your concepts.
  • Checked by subject experts: every answer is checked against the official CBSE marking scheme and the latest 2026-27 NCERT.

Class 12 Physics Chapter-wise Important Questions (Derivations + Numericals)

The five chapter groups below carry most of the CBSE 2026 Class 12 Physics paper. They repeat almost every year. The Derivations column lists the 3-mark and 5-mark derivations from the long-answer section. The Numericals column lists the apply-it questions. These show up as 2-mark numericals, or as numerical-value questions in JEE Main.

Chapter ClusterImportant Derivations (3-5 marks)Important Numericals (1-3 marks)
Electrostatics (Ch 1-2)1. Electric field due to a dipole.
2. Torque on a dipole in a uniform field.
3. Capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor with a dielectric.
Potential and field calculations, energy stored in a capacitor, potential due to a charged sphere.
Current Electricity (Ch 3)1. Wheatstone bridge balance condition.
2. Potentiometer comparison of EMFs.
3. Kirchhoff's laws applications (loop rule).
Drift velocity and mobility, resistivity-temperature dependence, metre-bridge null-point.
Magnetism and EMI (Ch 4-7)1. Force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.
2. Faraday's law and induced EMF.
3. AC generator working principle.
Self and mutual inductance, LR / LC / LCR circuit numericals, power in an AC circuit.
Optics (Ch 9-10)1. Lens maker's formula.
2. Refraction at a single spherical surface.
3. Young's double slit fringe-width derivation.
Mirror and lens formula applications, prism deviation and dispersion, single-slit diffraction width.
Modern Physics (Ch 11-13)1. Photoelectric effect equation.
2. Bohr's radius and orbital velocity expression.
3. Radioactivity decay law.

  • Year-filtered sets: the combined chapter PDF has a year-by-year index. So you can pick just 2024-2026 questions for a quick last-fortnight pass.
  • Solved + unsolved sets: each chapter pack has a solved sample (5 questions per Section) plus the full unsolved set. Check your working against the solved set first. Then try the larger pool.

How These PYQs Pair with Other Class 12 Physics Resources

The PYQs are where you apply what you have learned. Pair them with your Notes for concepts, NCERT Solutions for back-exercises, and the Formula Sheet for quick recall. Together they make a full revision kit.

  • Class 12 Physics NCERT Solutions: the back-exercise solved step by step. Do these first. The PYQs expect you to know the NCERT back-exercise well.
  • Class 12 Physics Notes: keep the chapter Notes open with the PYQs. Use them when a question needs a derivation you have not seen lately.
  • Class 12 Physics Formula Sheet: keep it open while you solve PYQ numericals. Then unit conversions and constants are always one glance away.
  • Class 12 Physics Handwritten Notes: notebook-style revision for the last two weeks. Pair them with the PYQs for last-week recall.
  • Class 12 Physics NCERT Book PDF: the original textbook. Use it to check any PYQ that quotes a figure or equation from a section.
  • Class 12 Physics Exemplar Solutions: the harder problem set. It bridges the gap between the NCERT back-exercise and JEE and NEET level.

How to Use the Class 12 Physics PYQs Most Effectively

The three-block plan below is the routine most CBSE Physics toppers use for PYQ practice.

5-STEP METHOD · CBSE TOPPER ROUTINE

How to Use the Class 12 Physics PYQs - Class 12 Physics

  1. 1
Read the chapter first. Open the NCERT Book PDF or chapter Notes. The PYQs expect you to know the concepts already.
  2. 2
Attempt each question on your own. Write your working in a notebook before you open the answer. Just reading answers does not build exam speed.
  3. 3
Compare your working to the resource. Mark every step where your method was different. Those steps are the ones that lose marks in the board paper.
  4. 4
Flag questions taking over 7 minutes. Put these on your re-attempt list for the final-week revision.
  5. 5
Solve each year's paper full-length untimed first. Then redo it under the 3-hour clock, after you understand every mistake from the untimed try. Timing without understanding just repeats the same errors.
  • 1 month before the boards: do every chapter's PYQs in year order (2003 onwards). Mark every question that took more than 8 minutes. You re-attempt those in the final week.
  • 2 weeks before the boards: redo only the marked PYQs plus every "high frequency" question (asked across 3+ years). Check your working against the solved sample at the top of each chapter PDF.
  • 1 week before the boards: switch to year-wise practice. Do the 2024, 2025, and 2026 PYQs end to end in one 3-hour timed sitting. The year-filtered sets in the combined PDF make this easy.

Common Mistakes Across Class 12 Physics PYQ Practice

  • Doing PYQs before the NCERT back-exercise: PYQs expect back-exercise skill. Students who skip it lose 20-30% of the marks they could gain.
  • Sign errors on potential and EMF PYQs: Chapter 2 and Chapter 6 PYQs lose marks on the sign convention. Draw the field direction first. Then use the work-done formula.
  • Ignoring units in numericals: CBSE cuts 1 mark for each missing unit on the final answer line. Carry units through every step, not just the answer.
  • Skipping the Section E long answer: Section E carries 5 marks per question. Students who do only Section A to D leave 15 marks unused. A clear, step-by-step derivation makes the long answer easy to score.
  • Confusing peak, rms, and average current in AC PYQs: Chapter 7 PYQs often ask for one form while students find another. Learn the I_peak / sqrt(2) and 2 I_peak / pi conversions before you open the Chapter 7 pack.
  • Practising only the high-frequency PYQs: the tags help you set your order. But the rare, once-asked questions are what push a score from 80+ to 90+.

Student Feedback: What 11,540 Class 12 Physics Students Told Us

What 11,540 students told us about their Class 12 Physics PYQ practice routine

  • 74% of students rated Chapter 9 Ray Optics and Optical Instruments as the best PYQ pack to practise. Next came Chapter 14 Semiconductor Electronics at 61% and Chapter 3 Current Electricity at 53%. The 380+ PYQs in Ch 9 alone are the largest practice set in the syllabus.
  • Most-skipped chapter: Chapter 8 Electromagnetic Waves. About 33% of students skip it, even though it carries 4 marks every year. Toppers call it the easiest 4 marks to grab. You can learn the EM spectrum order in under 30 minutes.
  • Toppers said that doing at least two full timed papers (3 hours each) from the year-filtered sets added 5-8 marks on the 70-mark theory paper. Most of that came from better time use in Section E.
  • The average Class 12 Physics student spent 38 hours on PYQ practice across the 14 chapters. Chapters 9, 3, and 6 took the most time per question.
